आडवाणी जी पर लिखने का कोई प्रयास अब भी नहीं करता यदि पिछ्ले कुछ दिनों में आडवाणी जी द्वारा दिये गये कुछ साक्षात्कार विचलित न करते। पिछ्ले दिनों आडवाणी जी ने भारत के कुछ प्रमुख टी.वी चैनलों को साक्षात्कार दिया और उसके बाद पाकिस्तान के एक प्रमुख समाचार पत्र को साक्षात्कार दिया और दोनों स्थानों पर उन्होंने पाकिस्तान की अपनी यात्रा के दौरान जिन्ना के सम्बन्ध में की गयी अपनी टिप्पणियों को सही ठहराया और फिर दुहराया कि इस विषय पर उन्हें ठीक से नहीं समझा गया और पूरे विचार परिवार( संघ परिवार) ने एक ऐसा स्वर्णिम अवसर गँवा दिया जब मुसलमानों को समझाया जा सकता था कि विचार परिवार इस्लाम विरोधी या मुस्लिम विरोधी नहीं होते हुए भी हिन्दुत्व के प्रति आग्रही है।

आडवाणी के ऐसे विचारों से स्पष्ट है कि वह अपनी हिन्दुत्ववादी छवि तोडने के लिये व्यग्र हैं और इसके लिये तरह-तरह के प्रयास कर रहे हैं।

आडवाणी जी की इस स्थिति को समझने के लिये यदि हम आडवाणी की आत्मकथा की प्रस्तावना में अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी द्वारा की गयी उस टिप्पणी का मर्म समझने का यत्न करें तो बात स्पष्ट हो जायेगी जिसमें अटल जी ने कहा था कि आडवाणी को गलत समझा गया और वे अपनी छवि के शिकार हो गये। आडवाणी की यही विवशता है। सोमनाथ से अयोध्या के लिये रथ लेकर चलने वाला आडवाणी किसी क्रांति के लिये नहीं निकला था और उनका उद्देश्य भी काँग्रेस द्वारा अल्पसंख्यक तुष्टीकरण के चलते हिन्दुओं में पनप रहे असंतोष को राम जन्मभूमि आन्दोलन के प्रतीक के चलते भुनाकर संसदीय व्यवस्था में भाजपा के लिये विपक्ष की भूमिका सृजित करने से अधिक कुछ नहीं था और यही कारण है कि इस आन्दोलन की चरम परिणति के रूप में 6 दिसम्बर 1992 को जब मुगल कालीन ढाँचा ध्वस्त हो गया तो आडवाणी अत्यंत व्यथित हुए और तत्काल इसे अपने जीवन का काला दिन तक घोषित कर दिया। वास्तव में आडवाणी जी बाबरी ढाँचे के ध्वस्त होने हो लेकर अपराध बोध से ग्रस्त हैं और इसे अपने जीवन का पाप मानकर उसके प्रायश्चित के लिये जुटे हैं। कुछ वर्ष पूर्व पाकिस्तान की अपनी यात्रा के दौरान जिन्ना को सेकुलर घोषित करने के पीछे भी उनकी यही मानसिकता काम कर रही थी।

अभी हाल में पाकिस्तान के एक प्रमुख समाचार पत्र डान के साथ साक्षात्कार में आडवाणी ने पुनः वही बातें दुहरायीं कि यदि पाकिस्तान जिन्ना के रास्ते पर चलता तो आज भी सेकुलर रहता और साथ ही उन्होंने अपनी एक काफी पुरानी अवधारणा को भी दुहराया कि आने वाले समय में भारत और पाकिस्तान का एक महासंघ बन सकता है।

आडवाणी के इन बयानों के पीछे आपत्तिजनक क्या है? एक तो यह कि जिन्ना के प्रति अपनी बात को वे यह कह कर न्यायसंगत ठहराते हैं कि इससे भाजपा सहित पूरे संघ परिवार के सम्बन्ध में मुसलमानों की सोच बदल जाती अर्थात आडवाणी भी मानते हैं कि भारत का मुसलमान भारत से अधिक पाकिस्तान की परिस्थितियों और घटनाक्रम से प्रभावित होता है। आडवाणी की इस स्वीकारोक्ति से 1990 के दौरान अल्पसंख्यकवाद के विरुद्ध गढे गये उनके ही मुहावरे गलत सिद्ध होते हैं जब भारतीय मुसलमानों की पाकिस्तान के प्रति निष्ठा को आधार बनाकर हिन्दुत्व की धार तेज की जाती थी। इससे एक अर्थ तो यह निकलता है कि आडवाणी देश की समस्याओं के सन्दर्भ में काँग्रेस से भिन्न राय नहीं रखते और अल्पसंख्यकवाद का नारा मात्र वोट के लिये था और इस समस्या के समाधान को लेकर स्वयं आडवाणी भी गम्भीर नहीं हैं।

जिन्ना को सेकुलर सिद्ध कर आडवाणी पाकिस्तान की निर्मिति को शाश्वत बना देते हैं और भारत पाकिस्तान की समस्या को और उलझा देते हैं। भारत और पाकिस्तान की समस्या के सम्बन्ध में एक तथ्य पर कभी ध्यान नहीं दिया गया और वह यह कि पाकिस्तान और भारत की समस्या भी काफी कुछ इजरायल और फिलीस्तीन की भाँति है जहाँ एक देश दूसरे देश के अस्तित्व को स्वीकार करने को तैयार नहीं है। पाकिस्तान आज भी स्वाधीनता पूर्व की मुस्लिम मानसिकता से ग्रस्त है और समस्त भारत को इस्लामी राष्ट्र के रूप में परिवर्तित करने का स्वप्न देखता है। यदि ऐसा नहीं होता तो भारत को हजारों घाव देने के योजना के आधार पर आतंकवाद को प्रश्रय क्यों देता? वास्तव में इस पूरी समस्या को इस नजरिये से देखने का प्रयास कभी हुआ ही नहीं और न ही उस मानसिकता को जानने का प्रयास किया गया जो भारत के प्रति शाश्वत शत्रुता को पाकिस्तान के अस्तित्व का आधार बनाती है। पाकिस्तान की इसी इस्लामपरक मानसिकता के चलते ही भारत का मुसलमान पाकिस्तान के अधिक निकट अपने को पाता है और इसके बाद भी आडवाणी का जिन्ना को सेकुलर सिद्ध करना और पाकिस्तान के रास्ते मुसलमानों के मध्य अपनी छवि बदलने का प्रयास करना यही प्रमाणित करता है कि या तो आडवाणी समस्याओं को सही सन्दर्भ में नहीं देख पा रहे हैं या फिर वे यथास्थितिवादी नेता हैं जो सत्ता परिवर्तन का माध्यम भर हैं।

इस बात की पुष्टि आडवाणी जी की आत्मकथा में इस्लामी उग्रवाद के सम्बन्ध में उनकी धारणा से भी होती है। अपनी आत्मकथा में इस्लामी आतंकवाद के लिये आडवाणी ने इस्लामी उग्रवाद शब्द का प्रयोग किया है और इस समस्या के पीछे एक विचारधारा की प्रेरणा की बात स्वीकार की है परंतु अपनी आत्मकथा के बाद छवि बदलने के अपने प्रयास में किसी भी साक्षात्कार में उन्होंने इस्लामी उग्रवाद या इस्लामी आतंकवाद की चर्चा ही नहीं की। यही नहीं तो राजनेता के रूप में भी आडवाणी जब भी इस्लामी आतंकवाद की चर्चा करते हैं तो इसके पीछे किसी विचारधारा की प्रेरणा सार्वजनिक रूप से स्वीकार नहीं करते। ऐसा शायद वे राजनीतिक दृष्टि से सही होने के लिये या पोलिटिकल करेक्टनेस के कारण नहीं करते। इससे भी यही बात सिद्ध होती है कि आडवाणी यथास्थितिवादी व्यवस्था के लिये उपयुक्त राजनेता हैं जो सत्ता परिवर्तन तो कर सकते हैं परंतु उनसे किसी क्रांतिकारी बदलाव की अपेक्षा नहीं की जा सकती।

आडवाणी स्वयं और उनके सलाहकार उनकी छवि बदलने के कार्य में लग गये हैं और इस प्रयास में वे ऐसे कदम भी उठाते जा रहे हैं जिससे उनके समक्ष अनेक प्रश्न भी खडे होते जा रहे हैं। भारत की संसदीय प्रणाली की व्यवस्था के चलते सम्भव है कि आडवाणी देश के सर्वोच्च पद तक पहुँच भी जायें परंतु उनके नये तेवर से स्पष्ट है कि छ्द्म धर्मनिरपेक्षता की परिभाषा देने वाला यह राजनेता स्वयं धर्मनिरपेक्षता और छद्म धर्मनिरपेक्षता के मध्य विभाजन नहीं कर पा रहा है।

Reliance is close to signing an agreement with Polo Ralph Lauren, the US-based design and distribution house, known for its range of high-end casual and semi-formal clothings as well as accessories and fragrances under internationally famous luxury labels like Polo by Ralph Lauren, Ralph Lauren Purple Label, Ralph Lauren, Black Label, Blue Label, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, Chaps and Club Monaco, to bring these premium products in India. However, it is noteworthy that only last week, following opposition by the Pacific Heights Neighborhood Association and the Fillmore Merchants Association, the city Planning Commission of San Francisco voted 6-1 to deny Ralph Lauren permission to open a boutique on Fillmore Street. People are battling against Ralph Lauren in San Francisco’s neighborhoods, and Pacific Heights is the front line. Ralph Lauren had signed a lease for 3,500 square feet at 2040 Fillmore St., the former site of Smith & Hawken, another chain store. The New York-based fashion retailer has long wanted to open a shop on Fillmore Street, where upscale national brands like Marc Jacobs, Simon Pearce and Jonathan Adler have rung up success and turned the neighborhood street into a shopping destination where one-off boutiques mingle with national players.  While the Planning Department had recommended the commission approve a conditional use permit for Ralph Lauren, the Fillmore Street Merchants Association has decided to oppose all future chain retail.

Subhiksha, the discount retail chain of India, moves to legal measures to get drugs as drug companies’ are refusing to sell medicines directly to corporate retailers for fear of a boycott by their current retailers and wholesalers. The large drug retailing (5.5 lakh chemists across India) and wholesale industry is extremely well organised and is able to resist corporate hijack through the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists.

Initially I was shit scared and thought that maybe my computer would explode or everything will come to a grinding halt. So I tentatively gave myself a target of 15 days to decide whether to switch from Windows operating system to Ubuntu.

Fortunately I was able to decide with confidence in a mere four days to take this important political step. Why do I call it a political decision ? Well because ultimately the choice between supporting a monopoly or freedom is afterall a political decision.

I recently took the all important plunge and upgraded from restrictive Windows operating system to Ubuntu 7.04 Fiesty Fawn and even though I was initially shit scared, whether my computer would just die or how I would survive with my emails, Internet and computing needs in a world without Windows the moment I had a CD with Ubuntu in my hands and with much hesitation installed it on my AMD computer, I knew that nothing would persuade me to go back to a world in which people write software and hide it so that no one can understand what choices are being made for them. No adult likes to be force fed.

The Ubuntu interface and approach is fantastic and has me drooling. What I like about the Ubuntu philosophy is that I can keep learning computing and software without some one giving me orders regarding what formats I should use for music and videos and on what to do and what not to do. Ubuntu is about freedom and respect - for users and developers.

To install Ubuntu, one does not need to change one's computer, hard disk, monitor or Internet provider - just one's mindset. And yes, my computer did not come crashing down and now I feel both I and my children can start learning proper software once again and being functional in a non Windows world.

2. Software tools should be usable by people in their local language

3. People should have the freedom to customize and alter their software in whatever way they need.
