After several weeks of unmonitored vacation eating, I've launched back into my diet plan. I've blogged about it ad nauseam - 1500 calories a day (more like 1700) with low fat, limited carbs, and lots of protein.

I've had my first training session with Mary today since my return. She was surprised that my strength doesn't seem to have diminished in my 4 weeks since my last workout.

Moreover, I weighed in at 246 yesterday, and given the last weight I had recorded from before my trip, that's just a 5 pound gain during the vacation - which was my goal.

I'm surprised I didn't gain more, given all the food I ate, but then I thought more on it, and realized I had a lot working in my favor. First, I didn't eat much junk food. I was in isolated areas, and there was no 7-11 around the corner to hit up for some candy and chips.  Second, any carbs I consumed were mostly fruit (sometimes strange and foreign, always refreshing and usually delicious). Mango, Papaya, Pineapple, Watermelon, Honeydew, and oranges were among the well known types. The more exotic ones included Rambutin, Jackfruit, Passion, Salak, Lychee and Dragonfruit.

Moreover, Leslie and I worked out about 12 times over the 25 days. We were very good at the beginning of the trip - the Four Seasons in Bali had great facilities, and we went everyday. However, frequency went down in the Maldives, where facilities weren't as good.  But it was enough to keep me from blimping out as I feared.

My co-worker Christian Buckley has already lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks. He looks great! His face really shows it, but seeing him from afar, his whole frame has melted away the pounds. 

I've got to get into the program mentality anew; however, maybe it's more healthy that I feel a bit more rebellious now. Before, I was on a high, and probably seemed like a cult member. However, I couldn't argue with my results. This time, though, I need to bring more balance to my resumed program. I can't eat 1500 calories my whole life, and I certainly don't want to limit my diet to Greek Yogurt and shakes like I did for much of the first 9 weeks.

I'll start blogging results starting next week. Leslie and I are renewing our wedding vows in two weeks, and I have a great linen suit I'm wearing. I want to make sure I look great in it.

I just came across this story that I feel compelled to share. This is a story of privilege in a Texas court, where money and connections are not supposed to count, where we find one judge and two men from very different sides of the tracks who appear to get anything but equal justice.

On the one side is Alex Wood, son of religious royalty Reverend John Wood and brother-in-law to eight-term US Congressmen Chet Edwards. On the other side is Tyrone Brown, a poor African American boy with no connections and no political clout.

In 1990, Brown pleaded guilty to armed robbery in which he stole $2 and was sentenced to ten years probation. In 1995, Wood pleaded guilty to shooting a killing a prostitute and he too was sentenced to ten years probation. While it is bad enough that Wood did not receive harsher punishment for his crime, it’s what happens during the two men’s probation that makes this story so outraging.

After only a few months into his probation, Judge Dean sentenced Brown to life in prison for smoking marijuana. Wood on the other hand remained a free man even though he was caught twice with possession of cocaine during his probation, a much more serious crime.

After nearly 17 years of a life sentence spent in jail, Tyrone Brown was released from prison on March 16, 2007 due to the good will and persistence of University of Florida law school graduate Charlie Douglas.

After ABC’s 20/20 showcased this story, many people began asking the question, “Are we really equal under the law?”

One man is free to live his life as he wants, after committing murder, and the other in jail for life after smoking marijuana.

It's very upsetting.

But after reading up, it seems like the one that got jailed for life - has been freed.

ถ้าอยากจะรู้แนวทางการพัฒนาประเทศมาเลเซีย จำเป็นที่ต้องทำความเข้าใจ กับวิสัยทัศน์ 2020 ถึงแม้จะเป็นเรื่องที่ได้ถูกกำหนดมานานเกือบ 20 ปีแล้ว แต่มีความสำคัญ เพราะเป็นโรดแมปการพัฒนาประเทศเข้าสู่ยุคใหม่ นอกจากนี้วิสัยทัศน์ดังกล่าว ได้กำหนดพันธกิจและโครงการต่าง ๆ ตามมาอีกมาก ทั้งเมกะโปรเจคและโครงการขนาดกลางและเล็ก เพื่อไปสู่เป้าหมายที่ได้ตั้งไว้

วิสัยทัศน์ 2020 หรือ Vision 2020 หรือ WAWASAN 2020 ในภาษามาเลย์ เป็นนโยบายวิสัยทัศน์แห่งชาติ (National Vision Policy ) เกิดขึ้นในสมัยอดีตนายกรัฐมนตรี Tun Dr. Mahadhir Muhammad เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1991 ที่ต้องการพัฒนามาเลเซีย ให้เป็นประเทศที่พัฒนาและทันสมัย ในลักษณะเป็นตัวของตัวเอง มีการพัฒนาทั้งด้านเศรษฐกิจ การเมือง สังคม จิตวิญญาณ และประเพณี วัฒนธรรม อย่างสมบูรณ์แบบ (fully developed nation) ในปี ค.ศ. 2020 โดยมีการเจริญเติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจจากพื้นฐานความรู้หรือ Knowledge based economy ไม่ใช่เป็นเพียงฐานรับจ้างผลิตเท่านั้น ดังปัญหาที่เคยเกิดขึ้นบนเกาะปีนัง ที่บริษัทต่างชาติย้ายฐานการผลิตไปยังจีน เพราะเมื่อเป็นเพียงฐานการผลิต วันหนึ่งถ้ามีฐานการผลิตแห่งใหม่ที่ถูกกว่า นักลงทุนก็จะย้ายไปยังที่ใหม่ ปัญหานี้ในเมืองไทยก็เกิดขึ้นเช่นกัน ที่หลายบริษัทย้ายฐานการผลิตไปยังจีน เวียดนาม เนื่องจากมีค่าแรงที่ถูกกว่า

เมื่อย้อนกลับไปยังอดีตประมาณ 30-50 ปีที่แล้วหลังจากได้รับเอกราชจากอังกฤษ มาเลเซียเป็นประเทศเกษตรกรรม ผลิตและส่งออกสินค้าพื้นฐานที่สาคัญ คือ ดีบุก น้ำมันปาล์ม และยางพารา ที่ราคาขึ้นอยู่กับผู้ซื้อเป็นผู้กำหนด ไม่มีความแน่นอน ดังนั้นจึงต้องการปรับเปลี่ยน ให้เป็นผู้ผลิตทางอุตสาหกรรม ซึ่งเป็นแนวทางการปรับเปลี่ยนสภาวะทางเศรษฐกิจ (Economic Transformation) ที่เหมาะสมกับสถานการณ์ เวลา และความพร้อมต่างๆ ที่ประเทศมี และกำหนดเป้าหมายไว้ว่าจะเป็นผู้นำทางอุตสาหกรรมเทคโนโลยีภายในปี ค .ศ. 2020

กล่าวโดยสรุปคือ ในห้วงระยะเวลา 63 ปี นับจากได้รับเอกราชจากอังกฤษ (ปี 1957 - 2020) มาเลเซียต้องการปรับเปลี่ยนฐานการพัฒนาด้านเศรษฐกิจ จากประเทศเกษตรกรรมสู่การเป็นประเทศอุตสาหกรรม และเป็นประเทศที่เป็นผู้นำทางเทคโนโลยีในปี ค.ศ. 2020 Mahadhir มีความเชื่อมั่นว่า ความสำเร็จที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดประการเดียวที่จะนำพาประเทศไปสู่ประเทศที่พัฒนาแล้ว คือ การมุ่งเน้นประเทศอยู่กับอนาคต เป็นความคาดหวังและความฝันของคนมาเลเซีย และจากวิสัยทัศน์ดังกล่าว ได้กำหนดพันธกิจหรือ Mission ไว้ 2 ช่วงคือ

· พันธกิจช่วง 15 ปีแรก (คศ.1991-2005) โดยมีแผนพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจ ฉบับที่ 6, 7 และ 8 เป็นตัวขับเคลื่อนแผน 6-7 มีเนื้อหาหลักคือ การวางรากฐานการพัฒนาด้านเศรษฐกิจ การศึกษาเพื่อพัฒนาทุนมนุษย์เทคโนโลยีและนวัตกรรม การสร้างความเสมอภาคในสังคม มุ่งแก้ไขปัญหาความยากจน การพัฒนาคุณภาพชีวิตอย่างยั่งยืน และการปรับโครงสร้างทางสังคม มุ่งสร้างความสมดุล และให้สิทธิแก่ภาคเอกชนมากขึ้น และในแผนพัฒนาฉบับที่ 8 มุ่งกระตุ้นให้มีการเติบโตโดยใช้ฐานความรู้( Knowledge – drivengrowth) การปรับโครงสร้างในภาคเศรษฐกิจที่สาคัญ (ภาคการผลิต ภาคบริการ) การสร้างความมั่นคงทางสังคมและเศรษฐกิจ ตลอดจนการกระจายความมั่งคั่งให้เท่าเทียมกัน

· พันธกิจช่วงต่อมา (คศ. 2006-2020) มีเนื้อหาหลัก คือ การยกระดับการพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจและการผลิต เพิ่มขีดความสามารถในการเป็นผู้ผลิตผลิตภัณฑ์ที่มีมูลค่าสูง การยกระดับการพัฒนาด้านการศึกษาและนวัตกรรมเพื่อรองรับระบบเศรษฐกิจใหม่ที่เป็น K-Economy ยกระดับความเสมอภาคทางสังคมด้วยการพัฒนาให้ครอบคลุมทุกกลุ่มเชื้อชาติ

ซึ่งขณะนี้อยู่ในช่วงของการใช้แผนเศรษฐกิจฉบับที่ 9 (RMKe-9) เป็นตัวขับเคลื่อนและได้มาถึงครึ่งทางของแผน 9 รวมทั้งครึ่งทางของ วิสัยทัศน์ 2020 ด้วยเช่นกัน

จากการบริหารประเทศที่มีความต่อเนื่อง เพราะมีรัฐบาลที่มาจากพรรคการเมืองกลุ่มเดียวมาตลอด 50 ปี คือBarisan National (BN) หรือ พรรคแนวร่วมแห่งชาติ ประกอบด้วย 3 พรรคการเมืองใหญ่ ที่เป็นตัวแทนของ 3 กลุ่ม เชื้อชาติ คือ UMNO (Malay) MCA (Indian) และ MIC (Chinese) ทำให้โครงการต่าง ๆ มีความต่อเนื่องและส่งต่อไปยังผู้นำคนต่อมาได้ โดยเฉพาะในช่วงการบริหารประเทศของอดีตนายกรัฐมนตรี Tun Dr. Mahadhir Muhammad มายาวนานกว่า 20 ปี และเป็นผู้ริเริ่มนำการเปลี่ยนแปลงให้มาเลเซียเข้าสู่ยุคใหม่ ด้วยการลงทุนก่อสร้างโครงการขนาดใหญ่ โดยเฉพาะระบบโครงสร้างพื้นฐานทางเศรษฐกิจ เพื่อรองรับเป้าหมายการเป็นประเทศอุตสาหกรรมเทคโนโลยีที่ทันสมัย เช่น การสร้างเมือง Cyber Jaya, Putra Jaya, Multimedia Super Corridor สร้างสนามบินนานาชาติใหม่ KLIA ระบบคมนาคมขนส่ง ทางไฮเวย์ เชื่อมภาคเหนือและใต้, ให้ความสำคัญด้านการศึกษา สนับสนุนให้มีการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษมากขึ้นในการเรียนการสอน ให้ทุนศึกษาต่อต่างประเทศ และอีกหลายโครงการขนาดยักษ์ รวมทั้งตึกแฝดเปโตรนาส

หลายโครงการที่ Mahadhir ทำไว้ ก็มีการวิพากษณ์วิจารณ์ว่า เป็นโครงการใหญ่ ที่ฟุ่มเฟือย เช่น ตึกแฝดเปโตรนาส ที่ใช้เงินถึง 20,000 ล้าน เมืองใหม่ปุตราจายา และครั้งหนึ่งนายกรัฐมนตรี อับดุลลอฮ อาหมัด บาดาวี ได้วิจารณ์ถึงบางโครงการที่ มหาเดร์ ทำว่าล้มเหลว จนอายไม่กล้าที่จะพูดถึง เช่น โครงการก่อสร้างเมือง E-Village ที่เมือง Dengkil ใกล้กรุงกัวลัมเปอร์ เพื่อเป็นศูนย์กลางถ่ายทำหนังในเอเชีย เลียนแบบ Hollywood สุดท้ายต้องล้มเลิกโครงการเนื่องจากธนาคารไม่ปล่อยเงินกู้ให้กับผู้ลงทุน ตอนหลังจะปรับมาเป็นโครงการสร้างเมือง Bio-Valley แทน แต่ Mahadhir ก็ให้เหตุผลแย้งว่า การสร้างตึกแฝดก็ดี ปุตราจายาก็ดี มีอะไรมากกว่าการได้ความคุ้มค่าทางเศรษฐกิจ หรือได้กำไรเป็นตัวเงินในระยะเวลาอันใกล้ แต่เป็นการสร้างความภาคภูมิใจให้กับชาวมาเลเซีย ที่ขาดความมั่นใจในตัวเอง จากการที่ตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นมาหลายร้อยปี ถูกกดขี่จากเจ้าอาณานิคม จึงมุ่งที่การสร้างความรู้สึกด้านจิตใจด้วย ให้คนมาเลเซียคิดว่า ตัวเองก็ทำได้ตามสโลแกน Malaysia Boleh

จากการแถลงผลงานของรัฐบาลต่อรัฐสภาเมื่อวันที่ 26 มิถุนายน ที่ผ่านมา ถึงครึ่งทางของวิสัยทัศน์ 2020 และแผน 9 ที่ได้บอกว่าประสบความสาเร็จที่เด่น ๆ เช่น

- มีอัตราการขยายตัวทางเศรษฐกิจ 6.1%-6.2% ต่อปี มาอย่างต่อเนื่อง

- รายได้ต่อหัวของประชากร จาก 18,840 ริงกิต ในปี 2005 เป็น 23,066 ริงกิต ในปี 2007

- ตัวเลขการขาดดุลการค้าลดลงจาก 3.6 % ในปี 2005 เป็น 3.2 % ในปี 2007

- อัตราความยากจนของประชาชนลดลงจาก 5.7 % ในปี 2004 เป็น 3.6 % ในปี 2007

- สามารถลดช่องว่างทางเศรษฐกิจระหว่างกลุ่มเชื้อชาติ และคนเมืองและชนบท มากขึ้น

- ผลิตผู้ประกอบการรายใหม่ได้ 68,000 คน ในปี 2006-2007

- ให้ประชาชนเข้าถึงบริการสาธารณสุขมากขึ้น และลดเงื่อนไขในการเป็นเจ้าของที่อยู่อาศัย

- ด้านคมนาคมขนส่ง ปรับทางหลวงชนบทให้กว้างขึ้นและจัดหาบริการขนส่งมวลชนที่ได้คุณภาพมากขึ้น

ฝ่ายค้านได้วิพากษณ์วิจารณ์ถึงผลงานของรัฐบาลว่า ปัจจุบันประชาชนต้องรับภาระค่าครองชีพที่สูงขึ้นจากการขึ้นราคาน้ามัน แม้ตัวเลขของรายได้ต่อหัวจะสูงขึ้น อัตราความยากจนลดลงก็ตาม แต่ก็ยังไม่อาจชี้ให้เห็นว่า รัฐบาลประสบความสาเร็จด้านพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจและสังคม อีกทั้งความยากจนในชนบทก็ยังคงมีอยู่ อัตราเงินเฟ้อเพิ่มสูงและเป็นคำถามต่อไปว่ารัฐบาลจะมีมาตรการอะไรอีกเพื่อลดความเดือดร้อนของประชาชน

หลายฝ่ายให้ความเห็นที่ต่างออกไปถึงมาตรการประหยัดที่รัฐบาลเสนอ เช่น การปิดปั้มน้ำมันเร็วกว่ากำหนดเดิม ก็ไม่ได้ช่วยอะไรมากเพราะคนก็ยังต้องใช้น้ำมันเหมือนเดิม และล่าสุดรัฐบาลได้ชะลอโครงการจ่ายเงินเดือนข้าราชการ เป็น 2 งวดต่อเดือน ออกไปก่อน เพราะข้าราชการระดับล่างที่เงินเดือนไม่สูง คัดค้านและเห็นว่าเป็นการได้เงินแบบเบี้ยหัวแตกและวางแผนการเงินไม่ได้ หลายปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้นขณะนี้เป็นความท้าทายใหม่ ที่รัฐบาลต้องประคับประคองเพื่อใม่ให้เป้าหมายของวิสัยทัศน์ 2020  ต้องหยุดชะงักหรือต้องชะลออกไป

ความท้าทายใหม่ที่เกี่ยวเนื่องกัน

ความท้าทายครั้งแรกเกิดขึ้น เมื่อวิกฤติต้มยากุ้งลามไปทั่วเอเชียใน ปี 1997 แต่มาเลเซียก็สามารถประคองตัวมาได้ไม่ต้องเข้าโครงการ IMF ด้วยการออกนโยบายคุมเข้มทางการเงิน ที่ได้รับการวิจารณ์ว่าจะทำให้เกิดวิกฤติหนักกว่าเดิม แต่สุดท้ายก็รอดและฟื้นตัวได้เร็วกว่าหลายประเทศในย่านนี้รวมทั้งไทยเราด้วย การท้าทายครั้งใหม่ จะมาจากสาเหตุอะไรบ้างนั้น ที่เห็นชัดอยู่ขณะนี้คือ เศรษฐกิจโลกที่ชะลอตัว วิกฤติน้ำมันและตามมาด้วยวิกฤติอาหารถือเป็นความท้าทายภายนอก แต่ยังมีอีกหนึ่งความท้าทายที่ถือเป็นการท้าทายจากภายใน ก็คือ เรื่องการเมืองในประเทศ

การเมืองที่มีเสถียรภาพมายาวนานของมาเลเซียถูกสั่นคลอนลง หลังการเลือกตั้งเมื่อเดือนมีนาคมที่ผ่านมา เสียงในสภาที่เพิ่มขึ้นของฝ่ายค้านและการประกาศเข้าสู่การเมืองอีกครั้งของ อันวาร์ อิบราฮิม ประกอบกับคลื่นใต้น้ำในพรรคร่วมรัฐบาลเองเริ่มปรากฏให้เห็นจากการที่ สส. 2 คน จากพรรค SAPP ไม่ยกมือสนับสนุนรัฐบาลในการลงมติอภิปรายไม่ไว้วางใจรัฐบาลเมื่ออาทิตย์ก่อน ดีกรีความร้อนแรงทางการเมืองถูกกระพือแรงขึ้นในต้นสัปดาห์นี้ เมื่ออันวาร์ โดนกล่าวหาว่าประพฤติผิดทางเพศกับอาสาสมัครในสานักงานของเขาที่เป็นผู้ชาย (ซึ่งเป็นห้วงเวลาเดียวกับที่เขาจะประกาศลงสมัครเลือกตั้งซ่อม โดยที่จะมี สส. ในพรรคของเขาหลีกทางให้ด้วยการลาออก เพื่อให้มีการเลือกตั้งใหม่ ) และเขาได้ขอลี้ภัยในสถานฑูตตุรกีเมื่อวันอาทิตย์ที่ผ่านมา และได้ออกมาหลังจากที่ได้รับการยืนยันจากรัฐบาลถึงความปลอดภัย หลายฝ่ายกังวลถึงสถานการณ์การเมืองภายในมาเลเซีย เช่น สหรัฐอเมริกาที่รีบแสดงความกังวล ทำให้หลายฝ่ายตั้งคำถามว่า สหรัฐ มี Hidden Agenda หรือเปล่าในกรณีของอันวาร์ อิบราฮิม

เหตุผลที่ต้องเล่าถึงสถานการณ์การเมืองด้วย แม้ว่าบทความนี้จะพูดถึงครึ่งทางของวิสัยทัศน์ 2020 เป็นหลัก แต่เศรษฐกิจและการเมืองเป็นเรื่องที่แยกกันไม่ออก และที่ต้องกล่าวถึงสหรัฐ ไม่ใช่เพราะบทบาทของสหรัฐที่แสดงตัวเป็นตำรวจโลก ที่มักเข้าไปยุ่งเกี่ยวเรื่องภายในประเทศอื่น ๆ เท่านั้น แต่เพราะสหรัฐเป็นประเทศคู่ค้าสาคัญของมาเลเซียด้วย สหรัฐอเมริกาจัดเป็นตลาดส่งออกอันดับหนึ่ง และเป็นประเทศที่มีมูลค่าการลงทุนโดยตรงในมาเลเซียสูงเป็นอันดับต้นๆ และมาเลเซียก็เข้าไปลงทุนในสหรัฐเป็นอันดับหนึ่งด้วยเช่นกัน โดยเฉพาะการลงทุนเกี่ยวกับอุตสาหกรรมเทคโนโลยี โดยสหรัฐเป็นผู้ขาดดุลทางการค้ากับมาเลเซียมาตลอด เช่น ในปี 2007 มูลค่าการค้าระหว่าง 2 ประเทศ คือ สหรัฐส่งออกไปยังมาเลเซีย 11,680.2 ล้านเหรียญสหรัฐ ขณะที่นำเข้าสูงถึง 32,628.5 ล้านเหรียญสหรัฐ เท่ากับขาดดุลการค้าไป 20,948.3 ล้านเหรียญสหรัฐ

(ดูได้จาก http://www.census.gov/foreigntrade/balance/c5570.html#2007  ) แม้ว่าในระยะหลัง ๆ มานี้ มาเลเซียหันมาให้ความสำคัญกับคู่ค้าใหม่ ๆ มากขึ้น เช่น จีน รัสเซีย และในกลุ่มประเทศอิสลามด้วยกัน

วิสัยทัศน์ 2020 ใช่ว่าจะดำเนินไปได้อย่างราบรื่นโดยปราศจากปัญหาอุปสรรค หลายโครงการประสบความสำเร็จและอีกหลายโครงการประสบความล้มเหลว ที่เห็นถึงความสาเร็จ คือ มีการขยายตัวทางเศรษฐกิจอย่างต่อเนื่องอย่างเป็นขั้นตอน ไม่ก้าวกระโดดจนเกินไป สภาพความเป็นอยู่ของประชาชนที่ดีขึ้น มีระบบการศึกษาที่สอดคล้องกับการพัฒนา สาธารณูปโภคพื้นฐาน ศักยภาพด้านเทคโนโลยีสื่อสาร ส่วนโครงการที่ไม่มีความคืบหน้าและต้องชะลอไปก่อน ก็มีให้เห็นเช่นกัน เช่น โครงการ E-Village ที่ได้พูดถึงไปแล้ว ชะลอการสร้างสะพานแห่งที่ 2 ที่ข้ามไปยังสิงค์โปร์ รวมทั้งผลกระทบจากการพัฒนาที่เริ่มมีให้เห็น เมื่อความเจริญทางวัตถุมากขึ้นแต่ความเจริญทางจิตใจตามไม่ทัน เกิด ภาวะ Cultural lag อาชญากรรมที่เพิ่มมากขึ้น ลัทธิบริโภคนิยมเข้ามา ปัญหาสังคมต่าง ๆ ในกลุ่มวัยรุ่น Mat-Rempit (เด็กแว้นส์ในบ้านเรา) การระบาดของยาเสพติด โรคเอดส์ นิยมวัฒนธรรมตะวันตกมากขึ้นและปัญหาคอรัปชั่น

The theme this morning is Cricket, or rather the 20/20 version.

With £2.5 million pounds up for grabs for teams qualifying for the new 20/20 Champions League, the 4 teams who make it to the Rose Bowl in Hampshire will be feeling the pressure.

The potential to change the county fortunes (in both senses of the word) are immense as only the 2 finalists will qualify, leaving 2 semi-finalists totally downbeat.

With all that is going on in cricket over the last year i.e. The IPL and the £10 million pound winner takes all game between West Indies (Stanford Superstars) and England, I can most certainly say the wind of change is here.

At domestic level, the players now realise how much money can be made from 20/20 cricket and are constantly breaking records of achievement during games.  This will continue for many years to come and I am sure that new generations will start to think about cricket as opposed to the mainstay for many years, football.

Let's hope that domestic cricket does not turn out like the football Premier League in the UK and be dominated by the, quote, big four.

Alas, I feel it is inevitable and the two finalists at the Rose Bowl will no doubt be high on the list of contenders to form the top teams for years to come.

Top climate scientist blasts G8 climate pledge

PARIS -- One of the world's most respected climate scientists on Tuesday slammed the G8 summit's goal of halving global warming emissions by 2050 as "worse than worthless."

Leaders of the world's richest nations, meeting in Japan, "are taking actions that guarantee that we deliver to our children climate catastrophes that are out of our control," US expert James Hansen said in an e-mail to Agence France-Presse.

The G8 leaders have proved they do not understand the climate situation, have no idea how serious it is, have no sense of urgency, and are just playing a game with our children's lives.

The Guardian video shows you what a good time our leaders are having in Japan, symbolically planting trees while they commit to nothing in particular to stop carbon emissions from coal.  (They'll have to plant a LOT of trees to make up for that overarching failure on their part to address the coal-dependent climate challenge.)

The AFP article continues with consideration and adoption of a 2050 goal for which most of these leaders will not live long enough to be held accountable:

At their summit in the resort town of Toyako, the leaders of the Group of Eight nations -- Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States -- agreed Tuesday to "consider and adopt" the goal of achieving the 50-percent cut in worldwide emissions by mid-centur

As far as a 2020 goal, in which timeframe most of these leaders should still be alive and kicking, and should be held accountable:

But they made no targeted pledge for action next decade, nor did they mention specific action against coal, which Hansen characterized as the greatest peril.

"A statement of any goal for percent reduction is worthless. Indeed, it is worse than that: it is a pretence that they understand the problem and plan to take needed actions," said Hansen.

Since the leaders are so dense, we need some engaging gimmick to get Hansen's message across that carbon emissions from coal MUST be eliminated (captured and stored).  They keep on missing his KEY point:

The only way to avoid climate catastrophe, argued Hansen, was to halt the emissions of coal, the most abundant and highly polluting of all fossil fuels.

He reiterated a call for a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants and for existing ones to be fitted with technology to capture the CO2 and store it deep underground.

"Otherwise we are sending a death sentence to uncountable species and are leaving our children with an ungodly mess," he said.

Sky-rocketing oil prices have spurred energy-efficiency plans in many countries but at the same time have intensified the use of coal around the world, especially in developing juggernauts China and India.

In the old days, people read books about Practical Coal Mining,,, like these well-thumbed copies in the National Museum of Welsh Life, Cardiff.  I doubt a book on Practical Coal Moratoria would be opened, let alone thumbed, these days by any of the so-called leaders.  How are we going to get through to them?

At first glance the Ping looks like the old one touch ultra smart meters... On further reading, it seems to be a combination of insulin pump remote and data management system, when combined with the new EZ Manager MAX software.

I spoke to a rep in the supply ordering dept at Animas this morning and found out that when it is released in Mid-August 2008 it will not be an add on to my existing pump, a 2020 (which was brand new in January 2008)... The One Touch Ping is a complete package and not just a shmancy number crunching meter as I thought or a meter and remote- it is an entire pumping package.

While I would love a continuous glucose dealio with all of my heart and soul, but cannot afford one at this time, I am ecstatic that Animas & OneTouch (same parent corp- Johnson & Johnson) are making data management easier.

I really don't care about the remote feature.  I do not need remote access to my pump. I am not a concealer, I wear it with pride clipped to my pants.  Some folks have asked if it's a new model cell phone...Someone asked if it is a satellite phone (it's a little more chunky and rugged looking than most current cell models)... When I need to use it I unclip it, do what I need to do, and clip it back on...It does help that it has a clip that is attached directly to the back of the pump...Back in my Cozmo and even in my Disetronic H-Tron days I found the various pouches to be helpful but not perfect... And only late in my Cozmo usage did I discover Unique Accessories' solution which worked beautifully and for me... Also, I'm not quite clear on what sort of screen the PING meter/remote (can we call it a glu-mote?) will have but one of the reasons I chose the Animas 2020 this time around was the clarity of the screen (in color and super bright...it's like having a little lcd TV on me at all times...OK, without anything that entertaining.)it's really nice not having to hunt up reading glasses or put my health at risk by doing a squint and guess...

As I have had my 2020 for less than a year the cost of exchanging it (they have a tiered program) is $399. Not a ton of money and for me totally worth it as recording usable data has always been a weak area for me in my diabetes care.   But it's still $399 so I will wait and see what happens with bald guy's job and kiddo's school stuff.

The other cool part of this announcement is that there will also be new EZ Manager MAX software and it will be MAC and PC compatible!  Woohoo!  I do use a Mac but I also have Windows installed just for my diabetes management software. It will be so nice to not have to use Boot Camp anymore...

I was in Germany last week, living the rock and roll lifestyle.  Sharing Jack Daniels from a bottle with Jim James, the lead singer of the finest live band in the world (My Morning Jacket), explaining the similarities and differences of baseball and cricket to the ryhthm section, Patrick and Two Tone Tommy.

When it was all over, I was happy to be going home.  Three days of travelling, drinking, and rocking had taken its toll, and Suave wanted to be at home with The Gris.

A little update on the Cricket now...

Graham Napier is my new hero.  Not only did he smash the highest score in 20/20 cricket in The England against Sussex two weeks ago, his batting since then has been full blooded to say the least.  He smashed Yorkshire around like the little boys they are, to reach the FP trophy final at Lords, and then chose to inflict pain on Northants last night too.  Not only that, but as an all-rounder he then took 4-10 in four overs to really butt-fuck the saffers.  Essex have now made it to the finals day in 20/20 at The Rose Bowl too.  Top work young fella my lads

If this lad isn't picked in the squad for the Stanford Millionaires game, something is seriously wrong.

Yorkshire might be out of the 20/20 competition too, after forgetting to register an Academy player, who has a Pakistani passport.  He did captain The England under 15's whilst holiding a Pakistani passport, so it seems strange that the ECB will punish Yorkshire for playing him, while he captained The England whilst a Pakistani Citizen?!

Bad week all-round for the Tykes, and my sympathies go out to Len, my favourite Yorkshire man.

Fukuda, Harper, and Bush are blocking climate emissions targets for 2020 that scientists say must be enacted to prevent a climate catastrophe. Now 176,697* citizens of more than 190 nations have signed this message to the G8 leaders:

The world can't wait for urgent action on climate change and it is your responsibility to take the lead. We urge you to set binding targets to cut greenhouse gases by 2020, in line with what scientists say is needed to avert a climate catastrophe. Rich countries must help developing countries adapt and embrace a clean-energy future, and all must do their fair share to reduce emissions in time. Our common humanity demands nothing less.

According to the New York Times:

The White House in December refused to accept the Environmental Protection Agency’s conclusion that greenhouse gases are pollutants that must be controlled, telling agency officials that an e-mail message containing the document would not be opened, senior E.P.A. officials said last week.

I found myself asking, "Why wouldn't they open a document that was a direct result of their own Supreme Court's ruling?". After pondering this for some time, I decided to do some further reading. I mean, if anyone can provide an answer, it would be the New York Times, right?

Over the past five days, the officials said, the White House successfully put pressure on the E.P.A. to eliminate large sections of the original analysis that supported regulation, including a finding that tough regulation of motor vehicle emissions could produce $500 billion to $2 trillion in economic benefits over the next 32 years. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

$500 billion to $2 trillion? I'm not sure about you guys, but that sounds like an awful lot of money to me! If I am doing my math correctly (and I'd like to think I am), that kind of money could equal a high amount of new schools, roads, firefighters, police officers, and, most important, Social Security benefits for our nation's elderly.

Tony Fratto, a White House spokesman, refused to comment on discussions between the White House and the Environmental Protection Agency. Asked about changes in the original report, Mr. Fratto said, “It’s the E.P.A. that determines what analysis it wants to make available” in its documents.

While this is a true statement, it is also very easy to sway the decisions made by this institution, especially if you're in the nation's most powerful position. I mean, let's put this into perspective:

While performing some basic accounting at your firm, you happen to notice that several million dollars have gone missing from the company funds. You try to tell your boss about it, yet he refuses to even listen to what you have to say. You figure that, if you do some more research, maybe you can find out who is embezzling the money, and maybe that will make your boss listen. Upon doing your research, however, you realize that it is your boss' son who has been stealing money from the company! So, you decide to file a report with the local police, which your boss then finds out about. He pressures you to lie in order to save his son, threatening to have you fired if you refuse. What would you do?

Now, I don't know if these e-mails and reports are actually being censored or not, but I will give the Bush administration a little credit on the environmental issue. According to the New York Times:

About 10 days after the finding was left unopened by officials at the Office of Management and Budget, Congress passed and President Bush signed a new energy bill mandating an increase in average fuel-economy standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2020.

While the year 2020 is some time away, this is still a step in the right direction. True, an even better direction for us to go in is to research and develop alternative fuels, but at least the Bush administration is showing some initiative.

With that being said, however, let me also point out that this is not the only time that a government institution has stood accused of censoring. According to the New Scientist blog:

NASA is feeling the heat from US lawmakers over allegations that it has been preventing scientists from presenting evidence for global warming. The issue was raised by the House Committee on Science in a debate on NASA's latest budget on February 16, 2006.

Things may be worse at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the agency most directly involved in climate research. The top officials at NOAA are "unapologetic about egregious censorship", says Jerry Mahlmann, a former NOAA scientist and director of one of its labs.

Could it be possible that there really is some censoring in the climate change and global warming reports we hear about, or are these simply "conspiracy theories" constructed by those who were unhappy with the report's findings?

I don't know. What I do know, however, is that this will continue to be a subject of heated debate for many years to come.

When will our next salary come? When are we going to die? What will become of the world after a 100 years? The list is of course endless.

While the chairman of Microsoft Corporation, Bill Gates is set to step down from daily duties after three decades on July 31 this year (shoot yourself right now if you did not know this!), we will start our estimations and predictions from the year 2009 and move forward 2009... 2010... 2015... 2020... 2030... 2040... and so forth.

Please note that these predictions are based on current trends and estimates. If things don't happen the way they are listed here, you better not blame us! The list does not cover each and every event that would happen around the world. So if you are looking forward to finding out of they would ever make the sequel to Sex and The City, you're on the wrong website! Sorry!

On a personal note, both Fauzan and I have been swept by amazement and sadness while compiling this list. There are certain events that only our children or our children's children will witness or hear of. The likes of us would have long perished... returned from where we came from... dust to dust. The future holds many hopes and promises. It also holds warnings and disasters in the making. The decisions we take now, in our present, can affect the outcome that our next generations will either enjoy or suffer from.

This is ironic... but still I think there's plenty of cricket to go around... meaning... suddenly there is a new appreciation of the "intelligence" behind ODI players... and the call to grow into mature cricketers. similarly, strategies need to be adapted accordingly. CONTEXT: PAIN OF TRANSFORMATIONS TO THE POST FOSSIL WORLD ECONOMY

The magazine Technology Review (german edition) published a provocative title in June: "Solar Energy – No Thanks". This title was intended to have an impact especially for the German audience, where the energy feed-in law (Energieeinspeisungsgesetz, EEG) is discussed. And the extent and structure of the subsidies have to be discussed of course, tax payers don't want their billions of euros being wasted for symbol politics. But think about some scattered facts:

• Today fourty countries have a law for energy feed-in of solar power
• Mega projects for solar energy grids are envisioned – like the TREC initiative (Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy Cooperation)
• Anti-poverty group Oxfam International on Tuesday urged the world's poorest nations to think twice before jumping on a biofuel boom that could drive farmers off their land and hit food supplies (IHT)

It is becoming clearer every day that bioful is not the best candidate to save the world. Oxfam spokesman Robert Bailey: "Biofuels currently provide a solution neither to the oil nor to the climate crisis, and are now contributing to a third: the food crisis" (IHT). Are you a believer in the renaissance of nuclear power and the progress in carbon sequestration (WP)? Even in this scenario solar power will have a prominent place.

RELEVANCE: DISRUPTION, SHAKE-OUT OF INDUSTRIES AND GEOPOLITICAL CHANGE

So expect some radical transformation of the production patterns and infrastructure of world energy. For convenience I simply call the guiding vision "solar society".

As with project initiatives like TREC the geopolitical impact comes in sight. The OPEC of today is a club of yesterday, the survival of a power like saudi arabia will depend on radical transformation. The political leaders will change from thinking about production capacities in million barrels a day (Jeddah oil summit) to thinking about the newest photovoltaic nano technologies. Now the question is, who is first to read the signs and will be the "next OPEC".
