Siamo sul finire degli anni '90.

Cosa porta a questo disco?

L'espulsione di Jimmy Chamberlin innanzi tutto, che significa l'assenza di una delle colonne portanti della musica dei Pumpkins. Fenomenale batterista, dal tocco inconfondibile, che nel luglio '96 lascia il gruppo per problemi di droga.

E la morte di Martha Corgan Burke, la madre di Billy. Una madre persa da bambino, poi ritrovata e poi, dopo pochissimo, persa di nuovo.

Questi due fattori, scollegati tra di loro, influiscono pesantemente sul sound del disco. Lontano dalle atmosfere rock che i fan di allora si aspettavano, fu un “mezzo flop� commerciale, per gli standard a cui si erano abituate le zucche (“solo� tre milioni di copie vendute). È un disco introspettivo, doloroso, malinconico fino alla morte, lento, ma profondamente vivo e toccante.

E' stato il disco con cui io li ho conosciuti, il disco con cui sono venuta a sapere della loro esistenza: potrei non amarlo? È perfettamente nelle mie corde, quando pensate a me dovreste pensarmi con questo disco in sottofondo.

Diversissimo dai precedenti dischi, come detto sopra, sia nel sound (con batterie elettroniche e una fortissima presenza del pianoforte) che nelle sensazioni che trasmette, sofferente, spaziante. Di Gish ha l'aria della novità, di Siamese Dream il dolore, la sofferenza, di Mellon Collie i sogni, i ricordi.

L'artwork è opera di Yelena, fotografa e compagna di Billy (al tempo), e ci introduce con grazia ed eleganza in bianco e nero.

Fin dall'inizio ci si rende conto che è qualcosa di inaspettato, di “mai sentito�, di nuovo per le Zucche.

Un silenzio non silenzioso e accordi di una chitarra acustica: ecco cosa ci aspetta premendo Play.

La voce di Billy, quasi sussurrata, sensualissima, in una canzone dolcissima e romantica, To Sheila. A uno a uno si aggiungono gli altri strumenti, discreti, a lasciare in primo piano quell'arpeggio e le parole, quasi una ninnananna, una canzone d'amore sognante e onirica... In alcuni pezzi (“And I could bring you... the light...�) struggente – avete presente la sensazione di farfalle nello stomaco che si ha quando si è innamorati? Ecco, io l'ho sentita per la prima volta ascoltando questo pezzo... Preannuncia le intenzioni del disco, che però sembrano essere subito disilluse dai due singoli.

Dopo alcuni secondi di silenzio, infatti, l'incantesimo viene spezzato dalla canzone più aggressiva dell'album, il primo singolo: Ava Adore. Batteria elettronica e sintetizzatori. Un ritmo ipnotico, Billy sputa le sue parole in quella che a dire del testo è una canzone d'amore ma che sembra quasi una maledizione... Il ritornello è un momento di apertura in cui si lascia spazio anche alle chitarre, ma presto il suono si riaddensa e si incupisce. Nel video, anch'esso bellissimo, si vedono i tre Pumpkins passeggiare malefici all'interno di uno studio televisivo, dove si gira ogni tipo di scena che può passarvi per la testa... (eheh, memorabile il Billy-Fester :D ).

Ma anche quest'atmosfera è presto spazzata via dalla canzone più pop e orecchiabile del disco: Perfect. Quasi una 1979 rivisited, tutt'altro che banale (penso siano finiti i tempi adolescenziali in cui “pop� e “commerciale� erano insulti!). La canzone in sé è velata di una certa malinconia, che traspare appena dall'arrangiamento “sorridente� di tutta la canzone, con la voce suadente di Billy e la batteria di Matt Walker che prende il sopravvento sugli altri strumenti... “I know were just like old friends, we just cant pretend that lovers make amends. We are reasons so unreal, we cant help but feel that something has been lost�...

Il passaggio a Daphne Descends sembra indolore, le due canzoni sono amalgamate, mescolate. Eppure che non siamo più nello stesso luogo di Perfect diventa evidente subito. Le chitarre qui tornano a farsi prepotenti, l'aria pesante, il senso di inadeguatezza, di essere messo da parte (“you love him more than this�), che permea tutto l'album qui prende corpo , diviene protagonista.

Sebbene in altre canzoni (come la successiva “Once Upon A Time�) sembri passare in secondo piano, per lasciare spazio a qualcosa di più indefinito, più borderline, la “sugar sickness� è in realtà il motivo portante delle architetture di Adore, presente (evidente o meno) in ogni recesso, in ogni sospiro.

Tanto che Once Upon A Time con i suoi tamburelli e l'aria fiabesca (“once upon a time� in inglese significa “c'era una volta�, e non è né più né meno il classico inizio delle favole dei bambini, come il suo corrispettivo italiano), non è che una dichiarazione di fallimento, una disperata speranza di redenzione postuma agli occhi di una madre seppellita appena dopo essere stata ritrovata....

Tear, dal significato ambiguo (strappare, dividere / lacrima), è una canzone lacerante, chiassosa, porta a galla i motivi del dolore corganiano (and for the first time heaven seemed insane, cause heaven is to blame for taking you away ).

Finora ho parlato di questo come se fosse un lavoro esclusivamente di Billy Corgan, e non degli Smashing Pumpkins. Ma effettivamente è così. Gli altri (i rimanenti, i reduci) James Iha e D'Arcy Wretsky, non hanno avuto praticamente nessun ruolo nella fase compositiva, lasciando spazio alle dolorose elucubrazioni del capoccione pelato. È un album così intimo, così sentito, stando a dichiarazioni dello stesso, l'unico che Billy non ha ancora trovato il coraggio di riascoltare. E per questo, forse, è il più “sincero�, e toccante.

I temi di cui sopra riprendono corpo in Crestfallen , devastante espressione di mortificazione (cretsfallen = mortificato), incarna sensazione di essere messo da parte e dimenticato (“who am I to need you when I'm down, and where are you when I need you around?�), in un intreccio tra le chitarre di James che si mescolano al pianoforte, il tutto da accompagnamento per la voce, terribilmente dolente e quasi irriconoscibile se la si confronta con il miagolio dolente dei pezzi più “rock� presenti sui dischi precedenti.

Passa la palla a Appels + Oranjes, cacofonico esperimento sintetico, ripetitiva e monotona, piuttosto banale nel testo, insomma: il punto basso del disco, da skippare inesorabilmente.

Il lato B (ebbene sì! Io avevo e ho tutt'ora questo album in cassetta!) inizia con Pug, una canzone che non mi sono mai spiegata. A tratti dark, con distorsioni e grida, altri in cui si lasciano intravedere (o meglio, immaginare) spazi aperti, quieti... Che però vengono ammortizzati subito dall'incedere del pezzo.

Segue la splendida e atipica The Tale Of Dusty and Pistol Pete. Anche questo un racconto, che ci porta in un altro spazio e in un altro tempo, distanti anni luce da Adore, sebbene musicalmente sia abbastanza omogeneo con il resto del disco (ma nemmeno troppo). La storia di una ragazza (presumibilmente), Dusty, e del suo carnefice, Pistol Pete, e del loro amore dolceamaro. Le chitarre acustiche dominano questa ballata trascinante, in un attimo di sollievo inaspettato.

Subito dopo pianoforte e voce e la batteria (vera stavolta) di Matt Walker e poco altro: Annie Dog.

Shame è una canzone “maledetta�. Batteria martellante ma “silenziosa�, che non prende mai il sopravvento, pianoforte e basso. Billy urla la sua rabbia quieta contro un'entità che lo ha distrutto... Misteriosamente (?) nei credits sembra che nessuno abbia suonato in questa canzone....

In ogni caso, il momento viene portato avanti con Behold! The Night Mare. “The coarse tide reflects the sky�... Da ascoltare ad occhi chiusi... (Se non avessi appena saputo che le backing vocals sono dei Frogs.... Ora mi scapperà una risata malefica ogni volta che l'ascolto!) A parte questa digressione, il pezzo è veramente struggente, mille strumenti che si armonizzano alla perfezione, una canzone profonda, stratificata, anche a livello di significato.... Forse il punto più lirico dell'album... Verrebbe da trascrivere tutto il testo, la cui bellezza però passa in secondo piano per l'altrettanta bellezza delle musiche...

È poi il turno della celeberrima e celebratissima For Martha, un confronto diretto con il lutto.. Qui il pianoforte e voce si mescolano nell'atmosfera densa di questo “requiem�... Batteria leggerissima, organo, per l'incarnazione della poetica corganiana di questo cd, fino all'esplosione distorta delle chitarre, a cui è lasciato il compito di chiudere, dopo più di 8 minuti, con un epilogo sussurrato e sfumato....

Blank Page, infine, in cui ricorrono i temi dell'abbandono e della solitudine, del sentirsi accantonato dalla persona di cui vorresti essere il mondo.... In un intreccio di pianoforte e desolazione.

17, un frammento di 17 secondi di pianoforte (estratto da “Blissed and Gone� --sconvolgente rivelazione), a conclusione. Essenziale, (“17 seconds is all you really need�), forse una citazione dei Cure, che riecheggiano come fantasmi nell'atmosfera di tutto il disco.....

Tirando le conclusioni... è un disco anomalo, una rottura, una ribellione. Un disco non più rivolto a un popolo di teenager, ma più aperto, più maturo. Il dolore lo rende più sincero... e meno “rock�. Le distorsioni emergono solo in alcuni pezzi (Ava Adore e For Martha), la batteria (suonata da 3 batterisiti diversi e poi assemblata al resto) è spesso elettronica, James e D'Arcy stanno sullo sfondo, quasi invisibili.

Molti lo hanno giudicato “il primo lavoro solista di Corgan� [il paragone va, con le dovute precauzioni, a “The Final Cut� dei Pink Floyd, in cui Waters prese il sopravvento sugli altri, che lo accompagnarono in questo lavoro di introspezione e di elaborazione di un lutto personalissimo], probabilmente non a torto....

Anywho, that actually has nothing to do with the video I'm about to show you. Well, it kinda does because I think this kid is a BEASTLY singer! I mean Whoooo! BEST male gospel singer I've heard on youtube. (I haven't heard alot, so dont get offended other male youtube singers)  But he has music behind him, so it doesn't have to do with my first paragraph. I've wanted to write for a few days now, but everything was just a huge ramble because all of my thoughts were disconnected due to the fact that I am thousands of miles away.  And I ramble enough as it is.  My whole body was numb and my thoughts were more less battling each other inside my head.  And of course there was one dominant thought.  I still have too many thoughts and I know I am going to forget to write something that I wanted.

I rode a big tour bus with all of the international students to go to the coast.  On the bus, there was an empty seat beside of me and I put my bookbag on it, so that no one else would sit there.  I was reserving that seat for someone very special, even though she was not physically there.  When we all got to the site on the coast, I seen seals bathing in the sun and I seen a view that was completely beautiful.  Sadly while seeing this lovely view, all I was thinking about is how much more lovely it could have been if my girl was there to see it with me.  It was so beautiful and I know we both would have appreciated it.  And then we could have got out our packed lunch and ate together as we stared at the sea.  The view was at such a height that I could see all the way until all the parts of nature turned to a blur.

Another thing is that I miss my girl's cooking.  Yeah, she cooks for me. All the time.  The food here so far isn't my favorite.  So while craving the good foods back home, I fantasize about the times when we were eating together.  I remember seeing her face when she couldnt eat anymore pumpkin cheesecake, which was some glorious cheesecake.  I couldn't really eat anymore either, because we we both ate so much to where we were bout sick - which was beautiful. ha :) but i couldn't waste that delicousness.....

and I am not even a huge fast food eater, in fact I don't like it much at all, but my girl knows what chicken sandwiches to get from what fast food places.  So then I remember feeding her as she drives down the road, and I chill comfortably in her passenger seat.

I also remember our last meal, NOT LAST, but last as in last meal before my flight.  It was awesome! We put together random dishes with random sauce mixtures and gave it to some Hibachi dude, and he cooked it.  We really made it, he just heated it.  But the one I made sucked and the one she made,.. you know.  We put it on tortilla shells and it was good.   And then we got sour cream, which made it way better.   She looked so cute when she was eating.  The food here isnt disgusting, its just not my favorite.  Surely there is a dish here that I love. Right now theres not, but on the bright side the deserts are awesome.  But anyways I havn't really been hungry since I've been here, and I love to eat.  I still eat my meals cause i know my body needs it, but I cram them down real fast before I can think too much or I will get bummed and not wanna eat.  The other day I was in the cafeteria, the only one in the cafeteria btw, and I was listening to the mix she made me, and I was real close to crying all over my cheesy lasagna (which wasn't bad-highfive!) until a couple of international students came in and asked to sit beside me, so ... yeah i know, dudes dont cry. Pshh, really really in love ones do.

And when I walk into my room, I see a picture of her face in between two hands in the shape of a heart.  Below that picture is my bed, with a handmade pillow (which is simply amazing and i sleep on everynight) and a stuffed giraffe that still has her smell.   Other than that its just a room with some curtains and a desk.

And at the current times, I feel very bipolar.  After I contact her I feel alot better.  But one minute I can be goofing off acting like myself and laughing and that laugh leads straight into a sigh of loneliness.

I try not to tell everyone I see, but its all I am thinking about.  People could be like "Nice to meet you" and I just wanna quickly respond "I miss my girl."  Suprisingly, a lot of people are real understanding about it, which is nice cause i don't really even know any of them yet.   I just don't wanna annoy people because it's all I wanna talk about, but if I annoy them - oh well i guess.. I think they understand. maybe.

Anyways, I could ramble on about all the things I miss [such as her kisses, and cuddling, and her touch, and just the things her eyes tell me when she looks at me] and sound way more emotional than any guy ever, but I can say it all in about one sentence.  I love my girl, Kia. <that sums it all up there.

And just like a plane took me away, a plane will bring me right back.  The time in between is what sucks.  I worked pretty hard to make this trip possible and I am thankful, so I am going to make the best of it.  But I really wish Kia could experience it all with me.

I'm looking at it positive, cause its all gonna work out. :D

Hmmm... have to stop thinking about that too much!  We went to London this month but it was kinda ruined as I got a bad headache.  Right, def going to London and I'm going to love it!!!

Cream-Filled Cupcakes

Delicious and simple to make, a creamy filling is piped into chocolate (or other flavor you wants) cupcakes with a pastry bag. Frost with your favorite chocolate (again, or other flavor you wants) frosting! (:

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Read in: 50 minutes

Yield: 36 cups

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line 36 muffin cups with paper liners.
2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and 1 teaspoon salt. Make a well in the centre and pour in the eggs, 1 cup milk, water, oil and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix well. Fill each muffin cup half-full of batter.
3. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool.
4. Make filling: In a large bowl, beat butter and shortening together until smooth. Blend in confectioners' sugar and pinch of salt. Gradually beat in 3 tablespoons milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Beat until light and fluffy. Fill a pastry bag with a small tip. Push tip through bottom of paper liner to fill each cupcake.
