If you are looking for somewhere to find information about a current news topic then one interestin

If you are looking for somewhere to find information about a current news topic then one interesting search engine is Silobreaker. It compiles a full report on whatever search term you enter. I tried a search on "Kevin Rudd", in a 360degree mode. This meant that the search was across its indexes including the fields for news stories, YouTube videos, blog posts and articles. Silobreaker returned top news stories and a video clip added today, a chart showing the popularity of his name on the Web over the past 30 days, another chart connecting him to other search terms and people, a map of geographic hot spots connected to him, and a list of quotes attributed to him.

It is a very slick way to aggregate all the Web's information on a topic into one page. You also have ythe option of an advanced search to narrow the search down.

A search on the missing Australian "Britt Lapthorne" found a lot of very current news about the search for her in Croatia and another search of "Bill Henson" and photographer was equally successful in finding information about the current controversy concerning the photographer and the models he uses.

I also tried a search on the Tasmanian Devil, as there was a small piece on the animal in one of today's newspapers. It again brought up quite a lot of useful information although the accuracy was not quite as good as the previous searches.

If you chose to do a search using the feature "Network" you get an exploration of the relations between entities and events. The feature "Hotspots" allows you to track an issue by date and geographic location and the "Media Trends" feature graphs information.

I liked the visual displays, that help to highlight possible relationships and trends. Silobreaker allows the user to get a feel for the subject and enables you get a more contextual insight into a subject you are interested in. It recognises people, organisations, topics, places and keywords and tries to relate them to each other as part of the news flow. I like the idea that it is trying to make sense of the huge amount of news that we can now attain daily.

One thing that I couldn't do was to limit a search to a particular country, and I would like to be able to do that as well as do the global search.

There is so much fantastic information out there and so many discoveries to be made, but how do you best collate, share and review your voluminous pixelated realizations? The answer is Feed

A friend in Feed is a Friend Indeed

Naturally there are again a multitude of aggregators to choose from, and we will review many on this blog along the way. Firstly I want to briefly describe the feed aggregation techniques of Swurl.com and FriendFeed.com and share my excitement about the impending release of Newsurly.com

Simple and effective way to aggregate all those tags and feeds. Streamlined approach to information delivery and friend addition. Great FAQ and help section explains the basics. Personally I enjoy the FriendFeed display and the ability to share such a wide variety of feeds (43 at present). I especially like the new beta layout which is well described on mashable.com.

FriendFeed is not everybody's cup of tea as exemplified by Duncan Rileys early review, but it can be a very effective way to comment, share and review your friends web page discoveries

Join me on http://friendfeed.com/sandnsurf

Lots of great ideas well executed on Swurl.com. Currently the site supports a well selected 19 websites.I really like the Swurl interface, its live subscription feed and timeline is fantastic and really easy to use. Check out this great screencast on Swurl. Certainly the site I would recommend if you are most interested in aggregating your own tag feeds, but a little clunky when it comes to reviewing your friends information/feeds - as they appear in a delayed and difficult to follow list.

Join me on http://sandnsurf.swurl.com/

Check out the buzz on Newsurly.com. Newsurly tracks conversations occurring across the social web in real-time and presents conversation data in a new, more useful and meaningful way. Newsurly is currently an alpha release with registration and dashboard features protected during testing and development.Really looking forward to seeing how this project develops...

- Real estate video content aggregators

- Real estate video portals

I checked out Facebook’s new layout over the weekend (not by choice, I hit the sneak peak button,

I checked out Facebook’s new layout over the weekend (not by choice, I hit the sneak peak button, and once there couldn’t find the button to revert to the old Facebook…ding #1). Seeing as how I had nowhere else to go, I took a look around. What’s interesting is that it looks a lot less like what we know as Facebook and a lot more like a FriendFeed or an aggregator service.

A lot of people have been complaining about it (I used to be one of the complainers) but right now, I can’t wait for them to fix all the bugs and roll it out. I think it’s a huge step in the right direction. Here’s why.

The social web has seriously grown. It all started with Freindster and MySpace, eventually succeeded by Facebook in many parts of the world. But although FB made the social web real to most of us, it by far isn’t the pinnacle of it. Sure, it’s a way to keep track of our friends, but we also use LinkedIn for our professional network, Twitter to see what people are doing, Delicious to see what people are interested in, LastFM or Pandora to see what people are listening to, Tumblr and Tumbltape to see the randomness people find on the web, BrightKite for finding people in your vicinity, WordPress and IntenseDebate for following what people are thinking, and Flickr for pictures. And that’s just the beginning. Now that is an amount of content that can be overwhelming and impossible to manage.

As a result, we’ve seen the beginning of aggregator services: a single destination site that pulls in updates on what your friends are doing across a plethora of places in the social web. Sites like FriendFeed or Netvibes are examples, but none of them have really nailed it. Netvibes was a good try, but content is siloed by source. FriendFeed had potential, but in order to pull in your friends’ feeds from all these services, you had to add them, and they had to have an FF account. Fail. My social graph lives in Facebook, and I’m not recreating it anywhere anytime soon.

Now I think the new Facebook is the realization that the above statement is true for a lot of people. I think we’re seeing the beginning of a comprehensive social aggregator based on the one site most people out there belong to.

The new Facebook is a UI that makes your applications usable (yes I've had twitter on my profile for ages but who wants to scroll through all that to see my update?). You have the option of including a tab for each of your applications right at the top of your profile. If Twitter, Brightkite, <insert service>, develop their applications right, I’m seeing seperate tabs for everything I use with all of my feeds directly available in my profile and also hooked up into mini feed for an aggregated view. This application loop can publish my consolidated web presence in a single spot, and enable me to check on what's gong on in my social web from one location. I've been waiting for this.

Of course there's still value in the destination sites themselves. I don't think we all want our ENTIRE social footprint in one place (there's some obvious social responsibility question marks in the post-Beacon-debacle world, as well as the desire to keep your work self separate from your social or family self). But in general, I think having the option to bring all or parts of your web footprint to a single place is a must have.

It’s also an important business move for FB: keep eyeballs at www.facebook.com instead of the site of an aggregator. That’s some important click through dollars.

One note to Zuckerberg: please please please get a change management person – you’re making change for the better, why can’t you make us see that early on?

Below is a list of websites that might help you in your teaching. The list was originally created by http://oedb.org and copyright belongs to oedb.org.

Aggregators

The following list includes free tools that you can use to stay on top of current events, including headlines and blogs.

Aggie: Aggie is an open source news aggregator that's also a desktop application. It downloads the latest news and displays it in a Web page.

Awasu: Awasu is a state-of-the-art feed reader that comes loaded with features for both casual personal use and professional, high-powered information management. Use this tool for content archiving, coupled with an advanced search engine, and use advanced features to manage your configurable channels. The personal edition is free to download and use.

Bloglines: This is more of a personal news aggregator than a bookmark tool, but it's sophisticated and highly useful for teachers who want to stay on top of current events in any given topic.

BlogPulse: BlogPulse is an automated trend discovery system for blogs. You can apply machine-learning and natural-language processing techniques to track blog activity on key issues, people, news stories, news sources, bloggers and more.

FeedReader: This is a free reader that is simple to use. It supports podcasts.

Google Reader: If you use Google for its many tools, then use this reader to stay on top of news by keyword or by place.

Plum: Use the "Shoebox" to accumulate bookmarks, and allow colleagues access to your "Dropbox," where they can provide Web pages, news, and more for your perusal. This is a great tool for building classroom projects or for accumulating news, sites, and images about a specific topic.

RSS Reader: This RSS reader is able to display any RSS and Atom news feed (XML).

Syndirella: Syndirella is an open source desktop information aggregator - a program that provides a comfortable environment for reading the information coming from multiple sources, or feeds. The most common uses for Syndirella are reading news sites and weblogs.

WikiNews: Anyone can contribute, and articles are written collaboratively for a global audience. They strive at all times to meet the policy of using neutral point of view, ensuring that their reporting is as fair as possible. Since this is a wiki, you can combine this site with other objectives in a project for your class.

Back to Index

Bookmark Managers

Bookmark managers make it easy to build a personal directory where researchers can tap into sites and materials that have been saved online and share them with others in most cases. The following bookmark managers are free to use, but they all have different angles. In other words, teachers and professors can do more with these sites than save a page or two.

del.icio.us: This is a popular social bookmarker, but it's an easy tool to use if you have a handle on how to use tags.

Diigo: Turn your students onto this tool, which works like a bookmark manager with a highlighter or with sticky notes. This is an ideal way to research for a paper or to create a new project for class. This site works much like MyStickies, but without Diigo's highlighter.

Facebook: While Facebook is a social utility that can connect you with friends as well as with students, you can also use this tools to bookmark Web sites and specific Internet pages.

Furl: Furl saves a cache of every bookmarked web page, so you can perform complete searches through the body of all spurled pages. Since Furl saves a particular page on their servers, you'll never lose this information even when the page has been deleted or moved.

LinkedIn: Sometimes you just want to get away from the students. LinkedIn provides a way for you to communicate with your peers instead (or not), and it's also useful for bookmarking.

Ma.gnolia.com: This site tends to be a little quieter and more organized. Like del.icio.us, you can see your links only or links posted by others. But, at this site you can create a group and keep it fairly well organized for class projects.

Spurl: This bookmark manager operates exactly like Furl in most respects. You can download all your saved pages to your hard drive if you fear losing them.

SuperGlu: This site gathers your content from popular Webservices and publishes them in one convenient place. You can use their templates to customize your links.

Twitter: Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co-workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of answers that can be no longer than 140 characters and spaces per post. Use this tool to help your students keep up-to-date, as you could advertise a Twitter address that students could use to learn about school projects, reading assignments, and other announcements. You can also use this tool as a bookmark manager for research.

Yahoo! Bookmarks: Yahoo! Bookmarks is not intended to be a social bookmark site like the others. Instead, it essentially allows you use your personal bookmark list at any computer. In fact, it acts and feels very much like your browser's built-in bookmark manager.

Back to Index

Classroom Tools

You need tools to help assess class progress. You need tools to help keep students and parents apprised of the students' progress. You need all sorts of tools, you need them at your fingertips, and you need them to work efficiently. Some of those tools are listed below.

Twidox: Twidox is a free, user generated online library of ‘quality' documents that allows individuals and organisations to easily publish, share and search for them.

Chalksite: This site is one of the quickest, simplest routes to expanding your classroom onto the Internet. Teachers, students and parents have a central point to access grading, assignments, discussions and messaging.

Charles Kelley Quiz Generator: Create multiple choice or bilingual tests. Though some of the quizzes generated here can only be used on this website, others can be put on your own website.

Engrade: Engrade is a free online gradebook that allows teachers to manage their classes online as well as post grades, assignments, attendance, and upcoming homework online for students and parents to see. Engrade is free and easy to use. Join over 10,000 teachers, parents, and students using Engrade today.

Free Worksheet Generator: Sponsored by Discovery Education, you can create your own worksheets or use over 300 ready-made worksheets created by teachers.

MyGradeBook: Keep track of grades online, where parents and students can log on to view progress. This tool is integrated with Quiz Lab (see below).

My Project Pages: Built by teachers for teachers, use myprojectpages.com to create structured online inquiry-based learning activities for the courses you teach that enable your students to engage in meaningful learning experiences while online.

Schoopy: You can post homework in more than one location on SCHOOPY. The first place you should consider is the calendar, where you can post important dates and notices. However, you may choose to use the Assignments/Quizzes/Files tool depending on how you would like to contact students.

Slideshare: Ok, so you're still with PowerPoint, but you can jazz that presentation up at Slideshare. This site takes your .ppt file (also works with Open Office and PDF files) so you can share it with your students (and the world at large). You can add music, embed videos in comments and more - all for free.

Survey Builder: Survey Builder allows you to easily create and manage online surveys suitable for Internet-based oral history projects, course evaluations, and other endeavors that involve collecting feedback. You do not need to know how to build a Web page that has forms, set up a database to store entries, or do any of the other technical tasks that are normally required to produce interactivity on the Internet.

Quiz Lab: Create your own online quizzes or select from a huge library of teacher-created quizzes. This tool is Integrated with MyGradeBook.Com (see above).

Web Poster Wizard: This free tool allows educators to create a lesson, worksheet, or class page and immediately publish it online.

Back to Index

Collaboration

Part of teaching is collaboration. Teachers need to communicate with peers, administrators, and students. The tools listed below - some free and some for a cost - will help you stay on top of your projects with ease through open channels for collaboration.

BackPack: You can keep your to-do lists, notes, ideas, and calendar online with Backpack, a simple web-based service that allows you to make pages with to-do lists, notes, files, and images. Backpack also features a calendar and reminders that can be sent via email or to your cell phone at predefined times. BackPack works with IE 6 or 7 (PC), Firefox 2 or later (Mac, PC, or Linux), Safari 2 or later (Mac). Backpack is a month-to-month service so you can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your free access at any time. Use this tool in conjunction with Writeboard, where you can use an online text tool to create and collaborate.

Basecamp: Projects don't fail from a lack of charts, graphs, stats, or reports, they fail from a lack of clear communication. Basecamp solves this problem by providing tools tailored to improve the communication between people working together on a project.

FirstClass: Using a personalized Web page as a communication hub, teachers can send messages to the principal, pick up student assignments, change homework tasks for that evening, or have students build their own Web pages. FirstClass will run on a single server with one administrator for any number of users. This tool is not free.

Gliffy: This diagram editor is easy to use, and you can save your work on their servers for free. Gliffy Online has two ways to make document sharing simple. Collaboration enables others to see and edit your work by simply entering their email address. Publishing creates a read-only, or public, image of your diagram that you can easily embed in a wiki, blog, or other type of web software.

LiveText: LiveText is a Web-delivered subscription service for teachers featuring collaborative lesson-building activities. Simple and easy to use, LiveText uses lesson planning as a focus for engaging the educational community. This is not a free service.

Mindomo: Mindmapping is a highly productive method of visual brainstorming that you can use to plan projects or to map out a knowledge base.
Office Suites

The tools listed below behave just like any other commercial office suite applications. The only difference is that they're free to use.

57. Google Docs: Google has managed to replicate Excel, Word, and PowerPoint with Google Spreadsheets, Docs, and Presentations, respectively. You can upload, create, and store all these files online, and then download them to other office applications and save them on your hard drive or share your work with others online. Google surrounds these tools with their famous search application, access to online books, and a scholars' search for online documents. The tools for teaching are virtually endless.

58. KOffice: KOffice is a free, integrated office suite for KDE, the K Desktop Environment for Linux and Unix workstations.
60. ThinkFree: This beta system offers Word, Excel, and PowerPoint clones that run in any browser for free. If you want to save files on ThinkFree's servers, you have 30 megs of storage space to use for free. This is a truly intuitive tool, especially if you're already familiar with Microsoft Office.

61. ZOHO: Zoho is an office productivity suite that works much like Google Docs in that you have access to spreadsheet, word, and an online presentation tool.
73. Assignment Calculator: You might think this tool is for students, and you're right. But, you can use it to see if your assignments are reasonably timed. Or, you can create a handout to show students that they can get the work done and you'll show them how to do it.

74. BackPack: You can keep your to-do lists, notes, ideas, and calendar online with Backpack, a simple web-based service that allows you to make pages with to-do lists, notes, files, and images. BackPack works with IE 6 or 7 (PC), Firefox 2 or later (Mac, PC, or Linux), Safari 2 or later (Mac). Backpack is a month-to-month service so you can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your free access at any time. Use this productivity tool in conjunction with Writeboard, where you can use an online text tool to create and collaborate.

75. HiTask: Dragging and dropping goodness makes this task tracker a fun tool to use to stay on top of things. Colored tags can be applied so users can easily identify and review important items. Meetings or reminders can be set by dragging their instance onto a calendar and into a time based schedule. Members of teams can also be assigned certain tasks by dragging the task onto the person's name. It's a very clean and east to use application. It does not allow for unlimited information, but there is an option for a $12/year for a premium account.

76. Meebo: Talk to contacts on GoogleTalk, Yahoo, MSN, AIM, ICQ and Jabber from any Web browser. You do need to remember your id and password, however.

77. mySchoolog: This online application tracks and organizes school lives. Lessons are entered and organized into categories, with weekly schedules built by dragging and dropping lesson planners and times for each class. There is a to-do list where appointments and homework lists can be made and the ever-important reminders can be set and sent out via SMS or email.

78. MyTicklerFile: MyTickerFile is a calendaring tool for managing reminders and projects. This one differs in that it uses 43 folders: 31 "day" folders and 12 "month" folders, allowing you to break down tasks by date priority.
79. Neptune: Neptune is simplicity in to-do list management, allowing you to set up various folders with one or more tasks. Order tasks in each folder by priority. Neptune will e-mail you each day (if you want) with a list of the topmost task for each defined project.
Public Content Management (Blogs, etc.)

Use blogs to teach, to build classroom community, to create class projects and more. The sky's the limit on what you can do with these tools (just ask Jeff at TechLearning). What's nice is that these blogs are free to use, although some may be free to specific groups of educational professionals or learners. And, these content management systems range from very, very easy to use to somewhat sophisticated (that is, you might need to know some code for installation or maintenance).

82. Blogger: Create an account, name your blog, choose a template and begin posting. Google purchased this company, so if you're addicted to using Google tools, then this free blog is a convenient extension of their services.

83. CMS Matrix: It would be impossible to list all content management systems here, so this site does it for us. Compare up to ten different systems and visit their Web sites through links maintained on CMS Matrix. Make an informed decision with their help on systems that range from ACM Ariadne Content Manager to zwook.

84. EduBlog: Powered by WordPress, these free blogs for teachers, researchers, librarians and other education professionals can help you to communicate to students and to your peers.

86. Geeklog: Geeklog is a PHP/MySQL based application for managing dynamic web content. "Out of the box", it is a blog engine, or a CMS with support for comments, trackbacks, multiple syndication formats, spam protection, and all the other vital features of such a system. Use plugins to radically alter its functionality. Available plugins include forums, image galleries, and many more.

87. LiveJournal: You can use LiveJournal in many different ways: as a private journal, a blog, a discussion forum, a social network, and more.

88. SchoolNotes: Create Notes for homework and class information and post them on the web in seconds using this free community service. Parents and Students can view notes from teachers through school zip code.

89. TeacherTube: Think YouTube for teachers and educators, as this site's layout and focus is similar; however, TeacherTube seeks to fill a need for a more educationally focused, safe venue for teachers, schools, and home learners. Site can be slow to load at times.

90. UniBlogs: This is essentially a place where university and college students can get their own free blog.

91. WordPress: This tool is free, and you can set it up on a personal Web space or use the free spaces offered at this site. WordPress is known for its excellent community support.

Storage

Nothing beats a backup for storage; however, when you need to share files or if you need to gain access to files from another computer, online storage and transfer is the way to go. However, we don't suggest uploading student test papers to grade on vacation in the Bahamas. That's counterproductive.

92. Twidox: Twidox is a free, user generated online library of ‘quality' documents that allows individuals and organisations to easily publish, share and search for them.

93. Diino: The 2GB free account is limited to two users logged in at the same time.

94. FlipDrive: Use your FlipDrive account to securely store your files online and then access it from any web browser; backup and protect your critical and most important data from computer crashes and viruses. This site is free to use for thirty days, and charges after that time will depend upon amount of storage you need.

95. HyperFileShare: Share files with unlimited transfers up to 250MB and unlimited space - all for free. If you share files privately they keep them for 30 days from the last download. If you share files for community (publicly), they may keep them longer.

96. MediaMax: MediaMax, powered by Streamload, gives you a private and secure place to upload, store, access, and share your personal videos, photos, movies, music, and files.Get 25GBs of free online storage (yes, that's twenty-five gigabytes) with upload limits of 10 megs. MediaMax also provides larger storage and uploads for very reasonable prices. This system uses folders and tags for easy organization and accepts drag-and-drop file transfers.

97. OmniDrive: Access, edit, and share your files from any browser. You have 1GB free storage with drag-and-drop file transfer capability and subfolders for organization.

98. Orbitfiles: Sign up to get a free 6000Mb Platon account. Pay a small amount for unlimited storage.

99. Yahoo! Briefcase: YB provides 30MB of storage (you can buy more if you want it) and allows you to keep your files private, make them public, or allow limited access to friends who also have Yahoo! accounts. Files can be stored by folder, which makes organization easier.

100. YouSendIt: Use this resource for sending large (up to 2GB) files to others, even through Outlook with their plugin. YouSendIt isn't intended for long-term storage, as files stored here are deleted after seven days. The drawback is that they're now advertising a 'free trial,' but they don't state how long this trial lasts or how much it will cost to continue service once the trial period has ended.

101. XDrive: AOL provides this service, where you can store 5GB personal hard drive on the Internet.

Now that you have a newsreader (your Bloglines account), you can begin adding other newsfeeds that interest you. There are several ways you can locate newsfeeds:

When visiting your favorite websites - look for news feed icons that indicate the website provides it. Often a feed icon will be displayed somewhere in the navigation bar of the site.

Use Blogline's Search tool - Bloglines' recently expanded search tool lets you search for news feeds in addition to posts, citations and the web. Use the Search for Feeds option to locate RSS feeds in which you might be interested.

Other Search tools that can help you find feeds:

Topix.net - This search tool allows you to locate recent newsfeed items based upon keyword or phrase searching. The tool focuses specifically on news and media outlet RSS feeds for information, not weblogs.

Syndic8.com - Syndic8 is an open directory of RSS feeds that contains thousands of RSS feeds that users have submitted.

Technorati - Technorati is a popular blog finding tool that lets you search for blogs. Since RSS feeds are inherent to all blogging tools, Technorati Blog Search can help you find RSS feeds for topic specific blogs you may be interested in.
Discovery Exercise:

Explore some of the search tools noted above that can help you locate some news feeds.

Create a blog post about your experience. Don't know what to blog about? Here some questions to think about ...

Which method of finding feeds did you find easiest to use? Which Search tool was the easiest for you? Which was more confusing? What kind of useful feeds did you find in your travels? Or what kind of unusual ones did you find? What other tools or ways did you find to locate newsfeeds?

So… have you heard of RSS? Have you seen those small funny tags on websites?

[caption id="attachment_504" align="alignright" width="32" caption="RSS Icon"][/caption]
So... have you heard of RSS? Have you seen those small funny tags on websites? ---->
Or maybe you’ve heard friends and co-workers talk about it, but still have no idea what RSS is. Well, don’t worry, because this week we're going to learn all about RSS! In the information world, RSS is not only revolutionizing the way news, media and content creators share information, but it also is swiftly changing the way everyday users are consuming information.

RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” and is a file format for delivering regularly updated information over the web.

Just think about the websites and news information sources you visit every day. It takes time to visit those sites and scour the ad-filled and image-heavy pages for just the text you want to read, doesn’t it? Now imagine if you could visit all those information sources and web pages in just one place and all at the same time … without being bombarded with advertising… without having to search for new information on the page you’d already seen or read before… and without having to consume a lot of time visiting each site individually. Would that be valuable to you? Well, it’s available now through a newsreader and RSS.

This week’s Discovery Exercises focus on learning about RSS news feeds and setting up a Bloglines account (a free online newsreader) for yourself to bring your feeds together.

Your co-workers - tap into their knowledge or work through your discovery process together! Several CML staff already use RSS feeds - seek them out and ask them to show what they know.

Discovery Exercise:

Follow the discovery resources above to learn more about RSS and newsreaders.

Create a free online Bloglines account for yourself and subscribe to at least 10 newsfeeds to your reader. See Using Bloglines Tutorial steps 1-3 for instructions. Newsfeeds:

Learn & Play @CML participant blog feeds - Subscribe to several of your co-workers' feeds. This is as easy as typing the blog URL into the subscribe field in Bloglines, or finding the RSS icon somewhere on their blog. Try it, it's easy!

Then try adding a few other types of news feeds from news sources and, hey, why not try subscribing to feeds in CML's new catalog? Start with these 3 sites below and subscribe to their feeds:

The Learn & Play @CML blog feed

Dispatch.com news feeds (pick at least one)

Unshelved - Library cartoon feed

Create a post in your blog about this exercise. Optional: If you're up to the challenge, you can provide the URL address to your public bloglines account (find where to find this below)

Don’t know what to blog about? Think about these questions:

What do you like about RSS and newsreaders?
How do you think you might be able to use this technology in your work or personal life?
How can libraries use RSS or take advantage of this new technology?

How to find your public Bloglines URL:

Click on the Share tab within your Bloglines account:

Scroll down the right screen pane and locate the public URL (see screenshot)

Be sure to add this as part of your post to demonstrate your completion of this activity!

So, to wrap things up, here is the link to my public Bloglines account: http://www.bloglines.com/public/mookitty

Why have a public account? To share blog rolls with others, of course! :)

P.S.: Once you tackle this discovery exercise, you've conquered the most difficult one of the whole 23! Whew! :)

There is no longer an excuse for not being up to date and hip to the happenings outside the world of sprites. T'was a time not long since whence the gentle thud of printed hemp on the doorstep would alert a readers ears to the arrival of the latest well worded and contemplated articles from our countries wittiest writers and commentators - albeit 2 weeks out of date.

Now is your time to take control of information and have it delivered when you want it and how you want it - carpe deum. The options range from the transposition of content generated feeds in newspaper style feeds such as 'Simply Headlines' to visual walls of information with 'Our Signal' and 'NewsMap'

The choice is yours, but for the sake of completeness I will highlight my three favorite news aggregators before moving into the realms of RSS feeds

Simply Headlines

[caption id="attachment_40" align="aligncenter" width="439" caption="Simply Headlines - News Your Way"][/caption]

Simply Headlines is a free, customized newspaper that you create and is delivered to your email every day. You can read it on your computer email, web mail, Blackberry, Treo or other mobile device. Or print it out and read it on the go. Simply create a free account; pick the news, features, cartoons and areas of interest specific to you - and have your newspaper delivered to you every day!

Our Signal

A visual wall of news. OurSignal.com looks at currently popular items on the top social news sites and mashes it all together. Users then get a rapid overview of the latest breaking headlines. The bigger the box, the more relative votes a story has; the warmer the color, the quicker the story is on the rise and cooler colors denote negative velocity. Sources are refreshed every 15 minutes. Edit your reading preferences and start reading. I prefer links to open in a new tab and to be struck through once read.

NewsMap

Another visual map of news feeds from around the world, but with the option to refine the country of news origin. Color coding on this site allows the reader to refine news topic by world news, national news, business, health, sport, technology and entertainment.

These simple news aggregators are a great start on the path to internet-connectivity but there is so much more to learn and share - so lets move along....

Under the category of constant inspiration I have filed the name Guy Kawasaki. His most recent brilliant idea is Alltop, a site that aggregates other sites and blogs and sorts them by topic and then gives you the most recent entries for those sites.

Here's how Alltop explains it in their FAQ:

We import the stories of the top news websites and blogs for any given topic and display the headlines of the five most recent stories (except Moms.alltop which has fewer headlines because there are so many feeds). When you place the cursor over a headline, we display part of the story so that you can decide if you’d like to read it. To read the story, click on its title. To go to the home page of the site, click on its domain name.

Just so happens he has a category for branding, and id-ology is now one of the blogs and sites listed there.

Our thanks to Mr. Kawasaki for listing us. And for his continuous cool thinking.

It doesn't get much better than this. Unless it's winter. And you're into it. Two weeks a year, is my bet, Chicago has weather this pleasant. Sunny fall days and windbreaker nights. I mean, this is August when it could, and maybe should be, sweltering. If I ride early enough, I can make it to work without really sweating. A surprise sprinkle would really round it out. I'll try to take and post some new pictures using Flock, which I learned about this weekend from Walter Mossberg's piece in Saturday's Chicago Sun-Times. I was able to organize several emails accounts, Facebook, WordPress, flickr, and YouTube, I think, together. It could help in developing a solid workflow that takes into account both my Mac and PC, prepares pictures for archives and smaller samples for those multiple sites. I haven't played with the news aggregators, yet. Got way distracted with Flock's Media Bar. It's thorough. I'm looking forward to how well it plays with C-SPAN. Not sure if it's portable, should be. Will soon find out.

And now for the goods.

I recently discovered Alltop, which is a great site for looking at the latest posts on all of the most popular websites and blogs for any given area. For instance, you can find out all the news this week about health, or nursing, or branding, or books, or music, or gardening, or photography, or futurism (yes, futurism), or one of many other topics. Not only is it a great way to get the latest news about your favorite hobby or professional inquiry, it's an easy way to find out about all the best websites or blogs in your area of interest. I've enjoyed checking out many of the different areas and found some new blogs to subscribe to myself, so I thought you all might, as well. Enjoy!

Over the past blog posts I’ve taken a look at (among other topics) the number of issues that hinder cyberdemocracy especially in Africa. The digital divide and the language barrier of the internet as it is are major contributing factors to the low levels of e-political involvement.

A large majority of websites are in English. However a large majority of the world’s population does not have English as their first language and some do not even speak a word of it. This presents an obvious language barrier and obstacle for any non-English speaker wanting to participate as an internet activist.

The digital divide has worked to cut off an entire section of the world’s population. As noted in a previous post, “even in the advent of this great cyber-democracy, those who were marginalized by the politics of the apartheid regime are still marginalized by the politics of this new virtual-democracy”.

But…this does not mean that e-democracy is doomed to fail in Africa. The fact that Africa only makes up 3.4% of the world’s online population does not mean that this 3.4% cannot become internet activists.

[caption id="attachment_16" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="null"][/caption]

Global Voices is a non-profit global citizens’ media platform that allows everyone the opportunity to raise global awareness about the issues that the mainstream media often forget, or simply choose not, to cover.

They use “weblogs, podcasts, photos, video, wikis, tags, aggregators and online chats - to call attention to conversations… that will help shed new light on the nature of our interconnected world”.

Bloggers spark up conversation, spread information and call on action for their particular regions. A team of translators ensure that all content is available in a wide range of languages like, French, Spanish, Chinese and Bangla. Users are even able set up their own networks which translate content into any language of their choice.

This means that with as little as just a GPRS enabled mobile telephone and basic computer literacy, a small group of women in rural North West province can take part in e-politics by blogging in seTswana. They could express the view of people at the grassroots level and have their content translated into a number of languages for global access.

South African bloggers are regular contributors to the site with debates often started with user comments. Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations, environmental issues, and the International Criminal Court’s charges against Sudanese President al-Bashir are only some of the most recent posts from South Africa.

South Africa still has a long was to go when it comes to internet penetration but that does not mean that e-politics is not a possibility.

Writing and reporting non-fiction has changed a lot in the last generation. When I was sending my first human-interest features off to market in the mid-1980s (fresh off the dot-matrix printer), I would carefully tuck a self-addressed stamped envelope in to receive the proverbial thumbs up or thumbs down in the mail. Today, our ideas can receive approval or rejection at light-speed, thanks to e-mail.

One of the best things to come along in the last few years for writers is the concept of Really Simple Syndication, or RSS. In a nutshell, writers who need to research websites that have content that is updated frequently can use RSS to bring the updates to them. Common Craft explains the concept far better than I, and they'll make you laugh harder, too.

Oh! And RSS has its own Awareness Day on May 1, to help spread the word.

Although a lot of corporate and organizational websites are late in joining the RSS party, many sites do have RSS feeds. The key to enjoying all this customized info-to-go goodness is picking a reader or aggregator.

There are plenty of free readers online, such as My Yahoo, My MSN, Google Reader, etc. Or you can purchase an aggregator/reader that operates from your desktop. Each one lets you add new feeds to your interface, and then you can visit your ONE reader, and not 10-15 websites or blogs, each day to see what's new.

For writing projects, this is heaven on earth. I use My Yahoo to track websites that I write about on my other blog, Creative Liberty.

I have a tab for each subject area I cover. Here's a snapshot of the RSS feeds on my 'Journalism 2.0' page.

The only downside to readers, if there is one, is that at some point you can go into cognitive overload from seeing so many updates in one place. (But the intrepid author of the higher-ed-technology blog Edublogger even has suggestions to combat that.) Or the site owner can stop updating on a regular basis, and you have to decide whether to take the feed out of your reader, or leave some feed in there with items that say 'updated 2 months ago'.

Overall, however, the RSS reader is a free or cheap, extremely easy way to keep up on your 'beat' or specialty writing areas. It might not make you a better writer, but it will definitely make your 'required reading' online more efficient.

The first thing I needed to do was get the name right… Voyage is a RSS feed reader not a stars

The first thing I needed to do was get the name right... Voyage is a RSS feed reader not a starship in the Star Trek fleet. Initially I had trouble adding my feeds however, under manage your feeds just click the add feed link and paste in the URL of the desired RSS feeds.

Next I had to figure out how to find the feed once they were added. For me it wasn't intuitive - once I discovered that you can use the bars on the time-line to change the dates or your mouse wheel (it does say this on the start page but I didn't read it) it was quite simple to find archived and recent posts.

It was easier to understand the functionality once I deleted all the default feeds and just worked with the ones I wanted.

The site looks great and I like the way the feeds wiz around. Again I think it warrants more play to work out what I like and don't. I currently use Google Reader which is very simple and intuitive so I will reserve judgment for now.

Of course I added my own blog and the with the design and font used by Voyage my haiku look really impressive.

So far the issues I have are:

It takes a while to load

Not intuitive to use

Couldn't find any help menu

It's a bit like FriendFeed, Google Alerts or Google Reader, but with more advanced tools.

I'm not sure if it's just me, or if the site is still bug-testing, but my filters found 0 articles. I've checked out the community support pages and it seems to be a problem others have had.

I like the idea though, it would save me loads of research time once I got my filters set up.

founded by Garrett Camp, Geoff Smith, Justin LaFrance, and Eric Boyd (2001) - San Francisco, CA

StumbleUpon is a Web browser plugin and internet community that allows its users to discover and rate Web pages, photos, and videos. Web pages are presented when the user clicks the "Stumble!" button on the browser's toolbar.

User ratings
StumbleUpon chooses which new Web page to display based on the user's ratings of previous pages, ratings by his/her friends, and by the ratings of users with similar interests. It is a recommendation system which uses peer and social-networking principles.Users can rate, or choose not to rate, any Web page with a thumbs up or thumbs down, and clicking the Stumble button resembles "channel-surfing" the Web.

eBay acquired StumbleUpon in May of 2007 for $75,000,000

Lat year when I set up the "My Oakton" page that I use as a portal for my calendar and email, I set up some connections to NPR stories, a word of the day and one or two other information sources. The choices were limited but there was a nice variety of sources. I always do a quick check of the news stories and word of the day when I check my email. I knew I had the links but never really thought about the name of the product. I think I already had RSS feeds.

Setting up subscriptions in my Google Reader account was easy. I'm glad to have consolidated access to all of the library blogs. It will be much easier to see what comments have been posted recently by having all of the blogs feed into one folder. Actually adding each staff member's url wasn't difficult, but it was time consuming to do each blog, one at a time. I know that it's possible to export/import feeds from other aggregators, did I miss a transfer technique that would let me transfer all of the library blogs to my Google Reader account in one step?

I wanted to thank the fine folks over at Alltop for choosing to feature this blog as one of their sources for worthy information. Alltop is a “digital magazine rack” of the Internet. Alltop sites are starting points—they are not destinations per se. They enhance your online reading by both displaying stories from the sites that you’re already visiting and helping you discover sites that you didn’t know existed.

The bottom line is that Alltop collects stories from “all the top” sites on the web, which means we must be doing something right, and for that we are grateful for the love and the recognition.
