I get the ProBlogger feed into my email box (highly recommended for those wishing to learn more abou

I get the ProBlogger feed into my email box (highly recommended for those wishing to learn more about blogging) and today’s feed focused on whether or not you think syndicating content on your blog is okay.

The subject matter did pique my interest as I have had my content syndicated on other people’s blogs as I know there are others who have had this happen to, too.

When you syndicate your articles, the content ezines make you check this box that allows them to syndicate your articles which is cool in one way – your one article is seen on many, many blogs. Some do not have a thing to do with your theme, but they run your articles for whatever reason – some of them are legit and some are spam blogs and you have no recourse unless they don’t use your bio and then it’s an uphill battle to find out who the blogger is and get them to take your content down.

I like using content ezines – www.ezinearticles.com for instance - because I like to use my articles for advertisement, as I know a lot of authors and business owners are doing.

But, that’s not what my post is about today. It’s about an idea on how to get people to comment on your blog.

I’m a busy, busy, busy person. My time is so valuable that I’ve not even had a chance to get into email as much as I like to and it piles up. This morning, I had a half hour before I had to run out the door and checking my email quickly, I found this post from Problogger.

Of course, it piqued my interest as it is a subject that would concern me greatly. The more I read their post, the more adrenalin started pumping until I found myself wanting to add to the conversation.

ProBlogger gets tons of comments, but they know how to hook you right in because they get me every time.

But, wait, there’s another incentive for taking the precious time to go over and comment. I get to leave my link on a # 1 blogging site and, hopefully, bring a little traffic my way.

So, what’s this mean for the author who wants more people to comment on their blogs?

Ask a question at the end of your post that is geared toward your readers and watch the comments pile up. If your blog doesn’t receive enough visitors to your liking, go into the social networks, ask the question and leave a link to your blog to where they can comment. Run the question through your newsletter like ProBlogger did. Are you a member of any e-groups? Ask them this question and tell them to leave their comment on your blog. If you keep at it, asking more questions as the days go by, you could build up a pretty good readership.

On that note, I’ll ask you all a question. Have you ever used this method to attract people to your blog to comment and how was your success rate?

ADDTHIS is popular with bloggers, as it faciliates multiple social bookmarking options in a blog.

If you are a wordpress.com blogger and you use the Addthis button in your blog, then I suspect your button is linked to http://www.addthis/bookmark.php .

The button is linked in this way in ALL the wordpress.com blogs I have seen so far. This is how I derived at my suspicion.

I also assume that you use the Addthis button to encourage your readers to bookmark the blog post (s)he is currently reading.

Did you know....
that there is 100% chance that the reader will not be able to submit his/her preferred blog post using Addthis in your sidebar?

Why?
Addthis bookmarks ANY url that is present in the address bar of the browser.
And it's not ALWAYS that the address bar of your blog is occupied with the permalink of a blog post that the reader wants to bookmark!!!

What sort of url's can occupy the address bar of your blog?
-The home page of your blog
-A search result page (if someone used the search box to look for something)
-A tag page (If a reader clicked a tag)
-A category page (If a reader clicked a category)
-A "Previous entries" page (If a reader clicked a "Previous posts" link under a post)
-A "Next entries" page (If a reader clicked a "Next posts" link under a post)
-An "Archive" page (If a reader clicked a month from the Archives)

You do get the idea, no? If not, why not experiment a bit? Click around your blog in the ways mentioned above. If your blog is configured to show more than one post, you will have at least two posts in the window. Say you want to bookmark a post. What do you do? Click the Addthis button in your side bar, of course.

You will be taken to the Addthis page that has this url in the address bar:
http://www.addthis.com/bookmark.php

The peril is not obvious as yet. Choose a social bookmarking site from the list, log in to your account and save the url from your blog. It is NOT the url of a blog POST!!!

My verdict
You should never test the patience of the average web reader. Web readers typically have a short attention span and they are not going to remeber clicking the permalink of a blog post (the only way to make Addthis work for a wordpress.com blog post) in order to save it. They don't have to do so in non-wordpress.com platforms and therefore they are not habituated with it!

So, what to do?
In my opinion, Addthis in the sidebar can be used only for one purpose - to encourage the reader to bookmark the ENTIRE blog. And how do we ensure that the reader is able to do that? We have to modify the Addthis code.

How to modify the Addthis code for the sidebar of a wordpress.com blog
You must Include your blog url and blog title in the Addthis code.

[sourcecode language='xml']http://www.addthis.com/bookmark.php?&url=http://EXAMPLE.wordpress.com&title=BLOG_TITLE[/sourcecode]

Please copy the above code and make necessary changes. Then link your Addthis button to it.

Is there absolutely no way to make the side bar Addthis button to bookmark an individual blog post?
There is no user-friendly way to use the Addthis button in your side bar to bookmark a blog post. Sorry.

However, if you are really desperate, you can use the Addthis button linked to the original unmodified code. But please be sure that you include an instruction right above or below the button. Something like this maybe:

To bookmark a blog post using any bookmark manager, please click the permalink of the post first and then click this button.

If you are lucky and if your reader is not in a hurry (s)he will take the time to make an extra click to bookmark your post.

A suggestion
If you want Addthis to be able to bookmark a blog post, you should have it under the blog post. But you must first modify the Addthis code to work for that blog post and link the Addthis button to it.

You can learn how to automatically modify Addthis for wordpress.com blog posts. This easy process will enable you to modify the Addthis button in such a way that all that a reader has to do is click the Addthis button and (s)he will be able to bookmark the blog post. Even if the address bar is not occupied with the post permalink. :D

***

Save and share

It is hard work trying to find interesting topics to blog about and appealing to a wide audience. I

It is hard work trying to find interesting topics to blog about and appealing to a wide audience. I was trying to search for more ways to promote my blog all morning, and through a series of links I found this site. Mentally I prepared a basic checklist, and noticed that titles, short paragraphs and tags are important tools to make the readers' search more efficient and organized.

Furthermore, I read that categorizing your blog posts makes it easier for readers to navigate and may increase readership to your site. So for the past 20 minutes I've been trying to edit all my posts and filing them into different categories in the hopes of attracting a bigger audience. Frankly, when I started this blog it was for a school assignment, but I found myself actually hoping that my posts would be read by a wider audience than just my classmates. Maybe I can reach out to more people who have similar interests to mine. Unfortunately, what I've been a magnet to the most are spam comments and advertisements.

According to that same site, you should post frequently and maybe even invite others to post on your blog for a sort of collaborative community effort. Another thing that you could do is use Chicklets, which are icons that make it easy for readers to keep coming back to your site. (I attempted to make use of these myself, but unfortunately couldn't figure out how to post the codes onto the WordPress site. If anyone knows how to do this, please comment!!)

You should also have a theme or some character to your blog, because no one wants to read the same old boring reports. Either your writing style or a new spin on some news worthy event should attract a broader audience.

I am constantly writing about the benefits of blogging to promote your books, so creating traffic for that blog should be top priority for any author wishing to sell their books. ProBlogger had a wonderful guest post from Courtney Tuttle about improving blog traffic and in only 30 minutes.

I especially liked her first suggestion...

1. Create link clusters within your blog

A link cluster is a group of links that you can point at a post or page to improve its search engine ranking. Let’s say you have a post that’s ranked for ’stupid business ideas’. Edit 10 of your other posts to create links (using ’stupid business ideas’ as the anchor text) to the ’stupid business ideas’ post and you will surely move up in Google for that keyword. This process can be implemented in about 10 minutes and can be used for any keyword your site ranks for or is trying to rank for.

I'm going to have to reread this so that I understand what to do but it does sound like an excellent idea.

I also liked this suggestion:

6. Stop writing about yourself. Start solving problems

Surfers become readers when a blog provides something that is wanted. A casual visitor may read your blog because they find training, answers to problems, entertainment, or something else they want. This more than likely will mean that they won’t want to read about you, your girlfriend, your cats, your kids, or your catastrophes (unless you have a personal blog that your friends read). Discontinuing the off-topic posts will help you to develop more repeat traffic and takes exactly 0 minutes to implement.

If that doesn't make sense! I have been preaching about this for a long time. Save those kind of blog posts for a personal blog. However, I do like some intimacy involved between author and reader but just don't make it a habitual thing.

But the point Courtney is making is this. People are in a hurry. If they land on your blog and you're talking about your pet doggie, they're apt to run off. But..if you were talking about writing tips, promoting tips, what have you...they just might stay a little longer. People want to learn. They want to find out secrets. Give that to them and keep giving that to them and you could end up with skyrocketing stats!

Thank you, ProBlogger, and thank you, Courtney!

Quick Fix

I stumbled upon this site of blog promotion tips while web surfing, and yes searching how to promote

I stumbled upon this site of blog promotion tips while web surfing, and yes searching how to promote my own blog. I found it very useful, mainly because it was simple and common sense.

The main idea was to take it "one post at a time." The author suggested two steps for a successful target audience: 1) give people what they want or expect, and do it consistently, and 2) add productive comments to other people's blogs.

While this is the basic and accepted convention for bloggers, the article shone new light on how to make the most use out of these tips. The quality of writing is first and foremost, as are the particular ideas of the individual blog. The entries should have a certain tone and theme tying them together, to form what is called a niche in the blogosphere. Secondly, the entries should be published on a regular basis, so that people come to expect material on your page in terms of content and timeliness. As for commenting on others' blogs, simply writing two words commending the post and referring to your own page won't do much good. If you're going to say something, make it insightful and worthwhile, so that the author and readers would want to check out your page. Also, if the topic that you read about really interests you, make it the inspiration for a new post on your own blog.

"If you like your blog's topic enough then there's a good chance you won't mind putting in the time and it won't feel like work at all," writes the author. Although there is no quick fix to self-promoting your blog, if you put effort and thought into it chances are people will want to read it.

WordPress changed the user interface some time yesterday. You all can’t see it but I sure can!

WordPress changed the user interface some time yesterday. You all can't see it but I sure can! Overall I think it's a good thing but it makes finding stuff harder until I learn where they moved everything. In addition, they either added new stuff or made it easier to find. Anyhow, if you are in the market for a dynamic blog platform that's free I recommend it. You give up a *little*customization but the trade-off is a much more dynamic and professional looking blog. In addition, for very reasonable pricing you can purchase add-ons:

Custom CSS for $15 a year

5GB extra storage for $20 a year

15GB for $50

25GB for $90

More than 30 private users for $30 per year

My only annoyance is I can't tweak my sidebar, header, or footer without paying $15 a year. You can customize the image header on the template that you select so I'm happy about that. In addition, everything in my sidebar can be rearranged via drag-and-drop which is very nice. They also have a healthy selection of free "widgets" which you can add to your sidebar. Finally, if you are on Blogger as well as many other platforms it's pretty easy to import all your old posts to WordPress.

After my last post someone e-mailed me and suggested I add del.icio.us to my sidebar so I did. Right now I added the blogs I read the most. However, I plan to slowly start adding sites from the Toplist. Apparently del.icio.us is yet another way to promote your site. So if you have not done so please consider registering for an account and experimenting. Also, please ADD ME if you are already on del.icio.us and I'll do the same for you! I figure if we infected Toplist we can do the same at del.icio.us and maybe even pick up a few new martial arts' bloggers.

Finally, one more shameless plug for Nathan's Convocation of Martial Arts Forum on Google Groups. If you have not done so please consider getting a Google Account and join in the fun. It's easy, it's free, it's a good way to promote your blog and network, and you just might learn something new!

From the new user interface I have a new way to look at my site statistics:

Top Posts

Chuck Norris Sues…, 762 views

Human Weapon: Taekwondo, 707 views

Chi Debunked?, 308 views

Top Searches

ppct, striking thoughts, crash test dummy

Given I've only been on WordPress hosted for about three months now I don't know what this information really means. Still, I find it mildly humorous that people find my blog after searching for crash test dummies. That may well sum up three year's worth of blogging!

Another person e-mailed me and asked me for some blog promotion advice. My first tip is to just conduct a search and read through the many articles on the topic. Past that here's my list of recommendations:

Push your blog to a few ping services. When I self-hosted I had about a dozen of these set up in WordPress. Now WordPress hosted does it for me!

When you post we send a ping to Ping-O-Matic - http://pingomatic.com - which then distributes it out to 15+ different services, all automatically. We want things to be as easy as possible for our users, so it’s another thing you just don’t have to worry about.

Set yourself up on Technorati. Even if your blogging platform automatically pings them it can't hurt to have an account.

Post consistently. You don't have to post every day but at least set a modest goal of once per week and then aim for quality. A model example of this tactic would be Martial Views. He's also good about keeping them short with good content. Let's face it: Most people don't like to read a lot so you have to catch their attention some how!

Go with a theme or niche. Examples include TDA Training (excellent training advice); Black Belt Mamma, Amanda Takes Off, or Fist in the Frost (they bring a human touch); Dojo Rat, Mokuren Dojo, or Martial Thoughts (they all have strong opinions and don't back down from controversy).

Post on a few different blogs regularly and maybe involve yourself with at least one online community. Even if you do this a couple times per month you'll see the benefit in traffic.

Get listed somewhere! I used to be listed on about a dozen sites but after a while this becomes a pain because you have to usually display a graphic and also remember another darn password. So, since having established this blog and then moving it to a hosted platform I'm only on del.icio.us and Toplist.

Add something interactive like videos. Many of the good blogs (TDA Training, Dojo Rat, etc.) will actually post original content. If you can't do that try to end your post with a related video. Or feature a series of thematic videos each month. This way you can speak to the people who do not like reading.

If you like to ramble on like I do be sure to have a few shorter posts with quality content (again Martial Views is the model here) or be sure to occasionally feature a video. This way you keep those people who don't like to wade through all your hot air.

Make sure you have an easy to find RSS feed on your page so people can subscribe.

Consistently use tags.

My themes are these:

Martial science and a scholarly angle

Training advice and my weekly training diary

Practical self-defense

Embracing a dash of controversy

Weekly martial news from around the Internet

Recently I added videos to my bag of tricks. Overall I think this has helped bump up my numbers. If I can I usually try to end a post with a related video to tie my topic altogether. Past that I try to feature a series of thematic videos each month.

Oh and yes, one last piece of advice: Don't take yourself too seriously and have a sense of humor. It's just a blog.

It's been a while since I've posted my blog traffic. Since moving to WordPress hosted I think my traffic has actually gone up. If I look at January, February, and March I think I can safely say that I average 2,000 visits per month. Not too shabby!

Top 5 ways to promote your Tag Cloud

TAG CLOUDS are an aesthetically pleasing way of giving the first impression of your blog in a nutsh

TAG CLOUDS are an aesthetically pleasing way of giving the first impression of your blog in a nutshell. So how about promoting the Tag Cloud of your blog to prospective readers? :D

Idea #1: Promotional emails

Everybody uses emails.

Compose an email and paste your Tag Cloud in the body. Just copy the Tag Cloud from the page of your wordpress.com blog and the Tag Cloud will appear in the body of the email! Additionally, write something like this:

This is the Tag Cloud of my blog about [...]. Please forward this email at least to one person to help them find out this wonderful blog!

Send the email to a close friend of yours (who may or may not be a reader of your blog). Because (s)he is a good friend, she will forward it to another friend. And pretty soon, friends of your friend and their friends and their friends will learn about your Tag Cloud and hopefully feel intrigued enough to visit your blog!

***

Idea #2: Via links in comments

Be your usual generous and intelligent commenter self and write comments in different blogs. But instead of pasting the address of your blog in the url field, paste the url of your Tag Cloud page. That way, those who are intrigued about your blog because of your (excellent) comment will access the Tag Cloud of your blog in just one click.

You should not comment just for the sake of promoting your Tag Cloud, make it a real comment that relates to the corresponding post. Avoid being spammy.

***

Idea #3: Showcase your Tag Cloud in your Facebook profile

This can work wonders if you use Facebook actively, especially if your friends visit your profile frequently. If not, you can simply send your Facebook friends a message, inviting them to visit your profile and click on a Tag to find something useful in your blog. I am sure you know how to cajole your friends!

So how do you get to show your Tag Cloud in your Facebook profile?
Add an app that allows you to paste HTML code. I used Profile HTML.

Simply view the Tag Cloud of your blog in Firefox. Select all the tags, right-click and select "View Selection Source". Copy the selected code and paste it in the body of your "Html Profile" box. Your Tag Cloud will be sitting all dressed up in all its clicky splendour right in your Facebook profile!

***

Idea #3: Make a Tag Cloud T-shirt

Yes! Although a T-shirt is not exactly clickable, it's a nice way of promoting your blog in real-life. Just make sure you include the url of your blog somewhere in the T-shirt.

Copy your Tag Cloud in MS Word and reformat it in such a way that it's suitable as a layout for a T-shirt. Now paste the Tag Cloud in a file in an image processing program and save it. Open a store at Cafepress and follow the necessary steps in order to create the T-shirt. You will find all the necessary information in Cafepress. And the best part is, you don't have to spend a single buck before someone actually places an order.

If you have some money (like, 18 dollars), then check out Snapshirts, they extract a tag cloud out of a url and create a T-shirt adorned with the Tag Cloud.

***

Idea #4: Create you business card showcasing your Tag Cloud

Create a business card (or get it designed by an expert) and use the Tag Cloud as a watermark. Provide all the necessary information that belongs to a business card. And oh! Don't forget to provide the url of your blog! Now all you have to do is distribute the cards!

Idea #5: Share your Tag Cloud as a Posted item in Facebook

Facebook, Facebook, Facebook - well, it's one of the most happening social networking sites out there. So, it wouldn't be a good idea to ignore it!

Sharing the url of your Tag Cloud page as a Posted Item is a good idea. That way, those who don't come to your profile can still access it.

***

So, can you think up even some more ideas for promoting Tag Clouds? Don't forget the extra hits they can generate {drool}!

Disclaimer

Copying the Tag Cloud from your Tag Cloud page will work only for wordpress.com blogs that created the Tag Cloud in a specific method. This method renders the font in such a way that the variation of font size remains unchanged when the Tag Cloud is pasted elsewhere.

If you don't have a wordpress.com blog, you might still want to carry out the process in order to have a paste-worthy version of your Tag Cloud. If you need assistance, please don't hesitate to use the comment box!

My guest bloggers book marketing feature will still continue, but something came through my email to

My guest bloggers book marketing feature will still continue, but something came through my email today which prompted me to ask you, the reader, a question.

ProBlogger sends out a fantastic feed of which I'm signed up for and today's feed that was automatically sent to my email box was about their poll results from a question they asked about blogging.

"Why do you blog?" was the question, but you have to keep in mind that ProBlogger is all about blogging to make money, and not necessarily a blog for entertainment purposes, although they do a pretty nifty job doing that, too.

But, anyway, the results were in from their poll and this is the way they stacked up:

#1 Reason You Blog: Money

#2 Reason You Blog: Fun

#3 Reason You Blog: Fame/Profile

#4 Reason You Blog: Business

#5 Reason You Blog: Networking

# 6 Reason You Blog: Other

Money got by far the largest amount of votes with fun being not too far behind it so I am presuming that there are still a lot of people visiting ProBlogger who aren't blogging for profit and maybe want to learn a few tips on how to market your blog like a pro (I know that's my reason), or maybe they actually do blog for fun.

I have lots of reasons for blogging but the main one in my case is to help in my promotions with my clients, plus provide marketing tips I have learned during the process of running virtual book tours as founder of Pump Up Your Book Promotion. Oh, yes, I have learned A LOT since diving into the blogosphere.

In my case, yes, it's to make money, but using blogs as vehicles and not necessarily it being the source of my revenue, or any revenue for that matter. I envy those who make money from their blogs, but it's not something I have gotten into or even have time for. But it does sound like an interesting way to make money online once you learn the ins and outs of doing so.

But anyway, the point of my post today is I'd like you, my readers or those lucky ones who stumble in out of the search engines, to tell me in my comments section why you blog since ProBlogger's wonderful poll is over. Do you blog for money? For fun? For other reasons?

While you're doing that, I've got tons of work to do...new tours go out tomorrow!

Just wanted to say a word about tags.

As you may know I use several blogging platforms and I've also been doing videos this year.

Whenever you post a new blog or video it's fundamental to post associated tags!

Like for this post I'll tag it:

Tags, youtube promotion, blog promotion, online promotion, videos, twitter

And that should probably do, it's not like this is a killer post or anything but when you are posting essential "flagship" material and you want people to see it

You know I love to cut corners and optimize my promotional activity. But because I'm running so many blogs, I've really noticed the ones that are tagged properly are the ones that are bringing in random search traffic!

ALSO: Last night I went out with a friend and shot and edited a fun video for youtube and added some music. Did it in windows moviemaker. Took about 6 hours, all up.

I've only been learning to shoot and make videos this year.

I work 60+ hours a week. Blogging and posting videos should be part of your weekly routine.

This nonsense about needing $5k to do a video that takes months or weeks . . . thats just ridiculous now.

This is the new music industry. It is actually all within your power.

I should really join Twitter, it's so hot right now. Except I know what the principle is, it's like micro social networking and in a big way its foreshadowing the fact we'll all be surfing on our phones pretty soon.

Basically you're using txt message sized posts to update your network.

This is the thing. If your promotion style is very network focused, working in a team or bouncing off others and you're on the move a lot, this could - should - be a go for you.

Myself, I work from home and don't travel very much at all and my promotion style is very much more content focused.

To me I'm not sure I need to know what my colleagues are doing or thinking at multiple points in the day.
AND It's also getting to that point again where I need to watch the work load I'm taking on so it gets hard to respond to the more casual enquiries.

Cheers.

HERE is the one-click Feedburner bookmarklet I created to help you automatically generate the Feedburner web form with which you can offer your readers the option to email your wordpress.com blog posts to friends!

"Email this post" Feedburner bookmarklet for wordpress.com blog posts

Step-by-step instructions

Copy the code from the above link in a Notepad file.

Open a new Notepad file and paste the code. Be careful to paste the code as it is. Save the Notepad file as an html file. Just write Email this post.html in the SAVE dialogue box and the html file will be created!

Open the Email this post html file in Firefox. The hyperlinked words email this post will appear in the window.

Place the cursor over the link. Drag and drop the link in the Bookmarks Toolbar Folder of your Firefox. This will generate a new bookmarklet in your Firefox.

All this is a one-time process. Now every time you need to offer "Email this post" feature under your wordpress.com blog post, do the following.

Publish a blog post.

View the blog post. Make sure you see the permalink of the post in the address bar, and not the blog url!

Click the "Email this post" bookmarklet. An email this web form from Feedburner corresponding to the blog post will be generated!

Copy the url from the address bar.

Go back to Edit mode of your blog post and write the words "Email a friend" under the blog post.

Link the words "Email a friend" to the copied url. Just paste the url in the Link dialogue box!

Save and view the post. If you click the link "Email a friend" you will find the web form that will enable your readers to email the blog post to a friend! :D

***

As mentioned in my earlier posts, this trick will only work if you have Feedflare activated for your blog. Log in to your Feedburner account and view your feed. Click the tab "Optimize" and choose Feedflare (on the left). Activate and save it. If you don't have a Feedburner account, create one now and burn your feed. It's easy and free! Feedflare enables several blogging platforms to automatically have "email a friend" options for posts - when it's activated and "email a friend" option is saved. Unfortunately, wordpress.com is not one of them and this is why we have to use a roundabout solution.

By the way, burning your feed at Feedburner as opposed to using the default feed of your wordpress.com blog has other advantages, Engtech has created an eloquent list.

***

An added extra
The "email a friend" Feedflare functionality from Feedburner that works for non-wp.com platforms incorporates only the blog post title in the web form. But my bookmarklet generates not only the title of the blog post, but also the title of the blog!

So, now that I have made your life a lot easier, how about appreciating me?

The comment box is just for you!

***

Promote this post! :D

I noticed that MySpace is a popular site not only for social contacts but also for blogging. Blogger

I noticed that MySpace is a popular site not only for social contacts but also for blogging. Bloggers use this site to promote their own blogs all the time. Now there is a new feature that allows users to browse the most popular blogs, categorized by topics or via search engine if desired. In fact, one of the categories is "Blogging"! Once in a while the most widely read bloggers offer their readers a chance in the spotlight via the comment slots of their own blogs. They hold special blog promotions and contests to increase interaction and readership among the readers of that popular blog. This method specifically targets readers to network and interact with the help of blogs that have a lot of traffic.

Similar methods are used throughout the web, in various other blogging networks. Famous bloggers usually provide chances for others to enjoy their 15 seconds in the spotlight via special contests or themed blog topics. Contests generate a lot of responses and therefore a lot of new readers, as well as "reader stickiness," according to an article giving tips for Blog Competitions. It is an especially rewarding technique for someone who already has a baseline of readers. The key is to have a motive for people to enter the contest by offering a prize, instituting a limited time constraint, and also by not making the assignment too difficult or boring.

Another tip I stumbled upon while searching for such blog promotion opportunities as these contests is a search engine called Qassia, which builds up members' popularities by linking their pages and ranks in proportion to the amount of information they produce.

So check them out and promote those blogs!

REMEMBER my post on how to create “email this” links for wordpress.com blog posts with t

REMEMBER my post on how to create "email this" links for wordpress.com blog posts with the help of Feedburner? I have created a bookmarklet to automate the link creation process.

So don't cry over the super-necessary "email this" feature for blog posts that never happened at wordpress.com (and probably never will?). Instead rejoice, for the solution is at your fingertips!

To get going, you need to click the link below. It has the primary code that will start the process!

Email_This Link Generator

Step-by-step instructions :

Copy the whole code in a Notepad file. (It's not necessary to understand the code).

Save the Notepad file as an .html document - name the file Email_This Link Generator. This name will appear in your browser's Bookmarks in the end. (If you don't know how to create html files, don't sweat! Just write Email_This Link Generator.html in the SAVE dialogue box and the html file will be created!)

Open the Email_This Link Generator.html file in Firefox.

Save the file in the Bookmarks of your Firefox - just like you would bookmark a site in your browser.

Now every time you publish a post, view it in a seperate window (make sure you see the permalink of the post in the address bar!)

Now open the the bookmarked file Email_This Link Generator in another tab and copy the code that appears in the window.

Go back to the tab that has the permalink of your post in the address bar and click inside the address bar. The url will be selected.

While it is still selected, paste the copied code in the address bar over it (or delete the post permalink first). A url will be generated in the window. This is the url that will enable your readers to email the post via a web form from Feedburner.

Copy the url from the window (not from the address bar!) and go to the Edit mode of your post. Now write the words "Email a friend" under your wordpress.com post and link the words to the url you copied.

Save and view the post again. When you click "Email a friend", a web form from Feedburner will appear! Your readers can use this form to send your post to a friend.

Mission accomplished! Easy and convenient, no? :D

You must remember that this trick will only work if Feedflare is activated in your blog. Log in to your Feedburner account, select your feed and click the tab "Optimize". Now click "Feedflare" (on the left). Activate and save it.

By the way, no use looking for the bookmarklet at Feedburner. They don't have one.

***

Known bugs
I have tested the bookmarklet on several posts of this blog. Sometimes the web form generated through the code has the title of the blog post - which is nice! And sometimes the form says "This Article" instead of the post title. :(

Help needed
Although it was fun to build the bookmarklet, I am no pro geek. If you are a hardcore coder then why not solve this problem for everyone's benefit? I would love to know if something is wrong with the coding or if that's how Feedburner is supposed to behave. Thanks in advance for your help!

***

The improved One-click Feedburner bookmarklet
I have created a one-click Feedburner bookmarklet to generate "Email this" links for wordpress.com blog posts. As fas as I have tested, it generates the post title in the web form without exception. Also, it's a one-click process. Enjoy!:D

***

Coming next

Actually, there's so much stuff available in the net on this topic that it might be overwhelming to novices. So I have gleaned sections of posts that deal with social bookmarking. Take a quick glance to prime yourself. Later you might also want to follow the links to learn more.

What is social bookmarking?

There was a time, none too long ago, when your bookmarks were part of your private domain, hidden away in the browser and stored on your local hard drive. Consequently, what you deemed important – the sites you visited regularly – was no one’s business but your own. Like so many other things on the Internet, Web 2.0 has changed that.

The advent of social bookmarking and sharing sites like del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Ma.gnolia, Blue Dot, Furl, Digg and many others, has made it possible for what was once private to be made public. You can now publish your bookmarks to the open Web, making them available for all to see, use, share and comment upon.

Advantages of social bookmarking

In terms of creating a high-quality search engine, a social bookmarking system has several advantages over traditional automated resource location and classification software, such as search engine spiders. All tag-based classification of Internet resources (such as web sites) is done by human beings, who understand the content of the resource, as opposed to software, which algorithmically attempts to determine the meaning of a resource. People also tend to find and bookmark web pages that have not yet been noticed or indexed by web spiders. Additionally, a social bookmarking system can rank a resource based on how many times it has been bookmarked by users (who find it useful, or amusing, or otherwise worthy of remembering and sharing).

The importance of tagging for social bookmarking sites

Tags are specific keywords that you can use for classifying content (in this case, stories). Once you associate tags with a certain piece of information, this information can be organized accordingly, and made easily retrievable by using the same keyword or keywords.

Tags have become a staple of web 2.0 sites, and especially social bookmarking sites, as they allow a user to sift through large amounts of information and locate exactly what the user is looking for, very efficiently.

How to generate tags and social bookmarking links for your blog

Several sites are there to automatically generate tags and links to social bookmarking sites. Keotag and egmstrategy are a great help.

One of the basic methods that I learned about blog promotion is by networking with other people. For example, by navigating to other sites, leaving comments, and exposing your point of view, you may create some aura of interest about your own blog. Therefore the people who read the same popular blogs will read the comment you left and may just be intrigued enough to travel to your personal blog and check out more of your authorship.

A lot of the blog promoting tutorials and tips included something that a lot of people may overlook. Even though this is probably blatantly obvious, the number one thing that should attract readers to your site is an interesting topic! Moreover, the style of writing and grammar does make a difference. How can people enjoy your work and keep coming back if they have to struggle to understand what exactly it is that you are trying to say?In fact, even the layout of the writing blocs is important. Fellow bloggers suggest that you should break up you paragraphs to break up the text and make it easier for the eye to skim it and tune into points of interest.

I've noticed it myself when I was browsing through blogs and searching for something to read and write about. A dull, monotonous tone, an immeasurable amount of text, and spelling or grammar errors can really turn the anticipated reader "off" to your work. In terms of grammar, proper use of language will make you seem like an educated person who is capable not only of presenting an argument or point, but also having the ability to back it up and convey it to others.

My personal observation is that presentation is very important in forming opinions about someone. Whether we acknowledge it openly or not, our first impression of people we meet in real life comes from how they look, how they dress and how they compose themselves. Likewise, I think the way the style of the blog is designed will play a role in readership attraction. Organized, easy to navigate layouts with lots of amusing and fitting pictures to back up the text is likely to be pleasing to the eye and to the popularity of the blog.

While I was surfing the web trying to come up with more ideas on how to promote blogs, I found this list of 10 hilarious ways of getting your blog noticed. For example, number 4 reads: "Hijack a combine harvester and cut an outline of your URL address into a corn field so it shows up on Google Earth." Evidently, a sense of humor is another factor in drawing attention to your blog. Even though these unique (and, according to the author himself, stupid) tips are far from practical, they were amusing to read and ponder about. Readers, such as myself, who happened to stumble upon this "tutorial" had a good laugh and would be likely to comment on the author's creativity. This example shows that blogging can definitely be something fun and personal, and binds no one to specific rules or guidelines. Whatever is written out there is there for the taking, or in this case reading. It allows people to share ideas and invents a whole new way of communicating and entertainment.
