Dear All,

Though I am professionally into the Film and Television Industry, the Stock Market is a place where I keep my eyes on a regular basis, and is of more of a hobby than a career. The uncanny similarity between Films and the Stock Market is that both are high risk high gain/ loss endeavours and probably thats why both are my favourites.

Anyways amidst the Global Financial Turmoil fuelled by the state of the US Economy, Indian markets also are feeling the pinch and the BSE Sensex is finally at 10,000 levels.

Technical Analysis of the Stock Markets is something which i do out of interest and for the sheer fun of it and based on my readings of the charts i had predicted and mentioned about that in this site way back in June 2008 in my post

BSE Sensex at 10,000 Levels !!!

which has actually come true on 10th of October 2008 (Friday) when the BSE Sensex closed at 10,527 down 800 points from the last day's close while the bubble (which is also mentioned in the June 2008 post) of Crude Oil prices have burst and come down to levels of $79 per barrel while the Indian Rupee is down to 48 Rupees to 1 US Dollar.

This probably once again proves what I feel, "The News follows the Markets and not the other way around" because the Market has a mind of its own which can be best tracked and analysed through "Technical Analysis".

I will try to write some more posts on the Capital Markets and Technical Analysis as soon as posible.

Happy Investing

The big carnage on the Dalal Street continued as another week ended up in a big time red. It was a c

The big carnage on the Dalal Street continued as another week ended up in a big time red. It was a capitulation day for the markets; bears took complete control over bulls which many of investors think they they have become extinct now. Metal and realty stocks got crushed very badly following technology, capital goods, power, telecom, oil & gas and banking stocks ( have i missed any???). Heavyweights are taking huge beating on the bourses, due to which benchmark indices Nifty and Sensex have touched new-2008 low. And i think in the weeks to follow there won't be much changes except that in new-2008 the year would gets modified.

Every day investors get up in the morning in the hope that there would be some positiveness somewhere in the market but at the end of the day they return with a chink in the armour! How long is this gonna be continued ? Whats in store for Dalal Street? Whaats the worst it can get to??

I always believed that Indian investors have more tolerance and optimism then investors of any other country but actually this time situation is totally out of their control. No matter how hard they try - its gonna be in red unless some heavyweights come into picture. The market has such conviction in hammering a stock down so continuously despite all sorts of clarifications coming in.

We have to realize that Indian market was totally standing on FII's feet - and now as wall street has already crumbled, many banks failed - has direct implications on indian market which unfortunately many analysts were denying at the very hint of the worse, possibly because they didn't want to generate any thunder in the market or they were just greedy when others were fearful..

All the panic stricken FII's coz of Global markets jittery are pulling back their money from Indian soil leaving hard to fill liquidity crisis in the dalal street. I really think it would be very difficult to attract these foreign institution investors again to invest in Indian market once this crisis is over as they have the options of investing in things like US treasury bills and European bonds. So, what will happen next? The valuations of all companies become zero? They will become bankrupt? Civilization will extinct? Would the Sensex gets stable at 9000 level..??

Should government ban the short-selling at this point?? They should drop some policies in pipeline which makes FII's really difficult to leave Indian market. Actually do the economists who run the country know only what they should do or they are just relaxing and enjoying the D-Street Mayhem?

Where are our heavyweights, the big boys - the only ones that still have some juice or some meat left - reliance, dlf, bharti.. i think that these are the people who can really save market from tumbling any further - just like Warren Buffet did for US, though i am still wondering that whether that was his smart investment or step to to help..but anyways his action did supported wall street a bit. We really need few Harshad Mehtas at this point who can again boost and capitalize the market to level that we have seen at the start of this year.

Moral of the story:
Enough damage has happened this week in four trading days to lose 15%, which is something that one doesn’t expect. The Bottom is still far for the Indian market and there might be more blood-bath on the D-Street!
And as its aid that we have learnt from history that men never learn from history. So, till the human beings are there with there primitive emotions of fear and greed, bull and bear market will survive don't know how but it surely will.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

All the king's horses and all the king's men

Couldn't put Humpty together again.

Well , Am talking about the Humpty Dumpties who sat on wall street and having a great fall. All the desperate federal resurrection plans , painfull bailouts and the king Uncle Sam's efforts seems to be going down the drain and could not put the Humpty Dumpty back together !

So how is the impact of Humpty Dumpty's great fall ?!!

On 10 october , 2008 :

Markets across Asia , Europe has been battered and dust all over ..

BSE is down to 10,527,

Dow Down to 8,579,

FTSE 100 fell more 20 percent to 3,932,

The Nikkei plunged 24 percent to 8,276, double its one-week loss in the 1987 crash.

The Sao Paulo stock exchange index fell 20 percent.

Hang Seng fell 7.3% yesterday ,

Sydney index closed 8.3% lower,

Thai index was suspended after hitting circuit breaker 10% low,

Germany's DAX was down 7%

The wall street perhaps is the biggest wall than the chinese wall ! The length of impact spreads across the globe much bigger than the chinse wall which runs through the chinese vast land.

The impact is total. Humpty Dumpty fall from wall is gathering dust in bourses globally. What a fall it has been ! The kings and ministers in various financial kingdoms across the globe are worried lot. Clueless , desperate , worried lot . While the common men are in disbelief and shocked seeing their investments been wiped out every single day.It may take many many a months possibly a year to bring back Humpty Dumpty standing up again. Lets all embrace for the turbulent times ahead .. The great fall is for real and the pull back will also be real but the need for hour is wise planning and patience , shrewd moves from all King's men across the globe.

Of course I have been aware of the food scare crisis going on in China over recent weeks, but I admi

Of course I have been aware of the food scare crisis going on in China over recent weeks, but I admit it was only last week that I sat up and really took notice. I was emailed a list of some of the potentially contaminated products and was disturbed to say the least when I saw on the list the same Baby Bite rusks that my little boy has been powering his way through for the last year.

Like many people I imagine, I had thought the risk were limited only to certain brands of baby formula. Apparently not, it appears it could even be spreading in far wider food circles than that, even covering Dove chocolate and M&M's.

With 4 Chinese babies already dead and nearly 11,000 babies and children still being hospitalised, the world is now sitting up and starting to get itself into something of a flap. Dozens of countries, from Indonesia to Kenya to Colombia, have now banned Chinese dairy imports amid fears sparked by the tainted infant formula.

As a precautionary measure, Tesco (UK) removed 'White Rabbit' milk sweets from its shelves, a brand that the New Zealand's Food Safety Authority have now warned contains "unacceptable" levels of melamine - a chemical used in making plastics and fertilizer that can cause kidney stones and even kidney failure.

Of course the Chinese government are busy trying to play down the problem, or in other words stick their head in the sand where no one can ask them too many awkward questions. Despite Xiang Yuzhang, the quality watchdog's chief inspection official, telling reporters in Beijing that "There is no problem," the world it seems is just not buying it. Perhaps because another senior Chinese product safety official has also insisted that the problem was "under control, more or less".

Not the most comforting of words to use really, 'more or less'. Those in charge of Chinese media spin must be shaking their heads in horror.

It does seem these days, according to the media at least, like the world is forever lurching from one food scare to another. It's hard to know what's safe to eat anymore, whether something is healthy or packed full of cancerous additives and which panic reports and urban myths to believe.

A World Health Organization study reported this year that unsafe food is responsible for illnesses in at least 2 billion people.

Of course it's impossible and unrealistic to expect everything we eat to be 100% germ free. Food now is grown, flown and consumed all over the world and passes through more pairs of hands than you can shake a stick at. So while you may keep your kitchen as sterile as an operating room and religiously and rigorously wash every piece of fruit that you eat, the chances are the food you eat has already been contaminated in some way, long before you even brought it home. Possibly 1000's of miles away by some backpacking fruit picker who went to use the loo and forgot to wash his hands. What a lovely image as you bite into your Royal Gala.

A long history of food scares, many of which turn out to be completely unfounded are enough to have you turning anorexic with fear.

The outbreak of listeria in 1989 that had customers fleeing from supermarket soft cheese and cooked chicken. Edwina Curries 'egg fiasco' of 1999, when the country stopped poaching, scrambling and boiling their breakfast for fear of getting salmonella. The 23% of pigs taken for slaughter that the British Government then reported were also infected with salmonella in 2000. The BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) and the outbreak of E coli that caused widespread mayhem in 1997.

The numerous links with cancer for a whole host of foods, including salmon, prawns, low fat milk, MEAT, bread, rice and even potatoes. The reports that cling film was dangerous, chickens nursing the flu could kill and swordfish gives you mercury poisoning. The concerns over food irradiation and the ongoing debate surrounding margarine. The media furore over GM (genetic modification) food and the unknown fear over what long term effect a chemically enhanced cucumber may have on our body in 20 years time.

Even trying to eat your 5, or is that now meant to be 7-a-day has become a mission in staying alive, with recent reports of fresh spinach, tomatoes and peppers all testing positive for salmonella and certain brands of carrot juice (organic no less) being linked to botulism.

When you start looking at your fork and wondering what exactly is in the food you are about to eat and whether it will one day cause you to grow another limb, then you know it's time to dig out a vegetable plot and only eat what you can manage to grow.

Much like with the everyday products that we use, the medications we pump into our bodies and the diets that we follow, it seems that in this day and age, eating has never been so dangerous.

For last one year the one word which has created buzz all around India is Sensex. The impact it has ushered on Indian masses can be judged by the release of latest flick "Saas Bahu and Sensex". Without any doubt it has now become issue of dining table. But like all other good things in life many people have heard about but less really know it. So I have dedicated this post to assist all those who want to know how deep the rabbit hole goes.

What is Sensex?

Sensex or in particularly Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index is an index composed of 30 largest and most actively traded stocks with base value 100 on April 1, 1979. These stocks represents nearly all major sectors. But the question lies what is index.

What is Index?

Index is statistical measure of change in an economy or a securities market. In the case of financial markets, an index is essentially an imaginary portfolio of securities representing a particular market or a portion of it. Each index has its own calculation methodology and is usually expressed in terms of a change from a base value. Thus, the percentage changes is more important that the actually numeric value. For example, knowing that a stock exchange is at, say, 5,000 don't tell you much. However, knowing that the index has risen 30% over the last year to 5,000 gives a much better demonstration of performance.

The plural of index can be spelled either indexes or indices.

Notes:

The Standard & Poor's 500 is one of the world's best known indexes, and is the most commonly used benchmark for the stock market. Another example is our Sensex.

Technically, you can't actually invest in an index. Rather, you invest in a security such as an index fund or ETF that attempts to track an index as closely as possible.

So after being cleared with prelims we can move on to trends which our Sensex has followed since its inception. For a major period it had been bullish but in recent period its growth has been marred by Subprime Crisis and other major Global meltdowns.

Trends of Sensex

The Rise~

* 1000, July 25, 1990 - On July 25, 1990, the Sensex touched the four-digit figure for the first time and closed at 1,001 in the wake of a good monsoon and excellent corporate results.

* 2000, January 15, 1992 - On January 15, 1992, the Sensex crossed the 2,000-mark and closed at 2,020 followed by the liberal economic policy initiatives undertaken by the then finance minister and current Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

* 7000, June 21, 2005 - On June 20, 2005, the news of the settlement between the Ambani brothers boosted investor sentiments and the scripts of RIL, Reliance Energy, Reliance Capital and IPCL made huge gains.

* 8000, September 8, 2005 - On September 8, 2005, the Bombay Stock Exchange's benchmark 30-share index -- the Sensex -- crossed the 8000 level following brisk buying by foreign and domestic funds in early trading.

Latest Trends~

As mentioned earlier the Subprime crisis alongwith the stringent attitude of SEBI towards PN notes have brought the havoc on Sensex in recent times. It can be clearly visualized by following graphs. However financial pundits suggest that it won't dorwn below 9K mark and soon stability may be recovered.

Everywhere people have started to speak about the markets. hmm.. A few days back I was in a saloo

Everywhere people have started to speak about the markets. hmm.. A few days back I was in a saloon and guys there were talkin about current markets, lehman crash this and that just as rumors they heard. I was thinking in my mind, Man India in awakening!!!! So just thought why dont i write something about what the charts have to say to a normal man.

Markets on the present scenario can be analysed on vrious factors and on various angles, but let me in short, just give you the analysis of bse and nse index alone in a way that gives you the gist of the current scenario.

Sensex on friday closed at 12523.3 pulling down 529 points and reviewers say the house representatives rejecting the bailout package was also a reason. The 12100 level is a kind of the last hope for the bulls as a break of the level could see the index sliding to 10300 and further deeper down to 9000 in the coming days. All are keenly awaiting for the movement of index over the next two weeks coz thats the key to determining the long-term road ahead.

And when it comes to Nifty (3818.3), it too recorded an intra-week low. Sources say failure to move above 4070 in the early part of the week would cost the markets seriously. Volumes have also recorded low. Also the sharp decline in assest prices in recent times has made many investors fearful of the stockmarket and still markets remain stressed.

Good Evening friends, Finance is my field of interest and stock market is something I love to invest

Good Evening friends, Finance is my field of interest and stock market is something I love to invest money. i read following news on web which is a bitter fact as on today. Investors from all over world had lost $10 trillion so far this year. The world stock market remains on down side majority time of the year. Read following news from Indian Express website.

In a tight bear hug since the beginning of this year, stock market investors across the world have lost more than 10 trillion dollars -- an amount more than 10 times of the entire investor wealth in India.

All 52 equity markets of the world have suffered a loss of USD 10.5 trillion so far this year, leading rating agency and financial data provider Standard and Poor's said on Friday.

The worldwide loss this year is 11.7 times of the total market valuation of all the listed companies in India, which currently stands at around 900 billion dollar. Indian stock market valuation has nearly halved so far this year.

Year-to-date, all 26 developed markets have lost ground while nearly all the 26 emerging markets have suffered loss. Jordan, was the only country that managed to return positive YTD returns (up 0.96 per cent).

"September was the worst month for emerging markets since August 1998," Silverblatt said, as all the 52 markets were down during the month, resulting in a loss of USD 4.1 trillion loss in equity. In the third quarter all the 52 markets posted a loss of USD 5.8 trillion which amounted to a year-to-date loss of USD 10.5 trillion.

The fall was more severe in emerging markets, as they fell by 27.98 per cent, while developed markets lost 21.62 per cent during the third quarter of this year, according to Standard & Poors Senior Index Analyst Howard Silverblatt.

The US was down by 8.85 per cent, while Russia was off by 45.52 per cent. The Philippines was the only market that reported positive returns during the third quarter (0.04 per cent).

For September, emerging markets lost 18.76 per cent while developed markets fell 14.80 per cent. The US continued to perform better than other markets with a loss of 9.29 per cent during the month, Silverblatt said.

As per Standard & Poors Index Services, some of the stock markets that witnessed an erosion of over 50 per cent in their valuations so far this year include -- Pakistan (52.18 per cent), India (50.34 per cent), Ireland (51.66 per cent) and Iceland (69.17 per cent).

Among the BRIC peers India suffered the maximum loss, while for Brazil it was the minimum. Brazil reported a loss of 31.09 per cent, Russia (46.85 per cent) and China (46.35 per cent).

Other major losers include -- The United States (19.47 per cent), Japan (23.24 per cent), The United Kingdom (32.02 per cent), Germany (33.75 per cent) and France (30.32 per cent)....

NIFTY is sliding without any halt. During Mid-August-September NIFTY was sluggish which was clearly

NIFTY is sliding without any halt. During Mid-August-September NIFTY was sluggish which was clearly reflected in ADX indicator. During that time ADX indicator gone to its lowest point near 15, and thereafter it has started moving up and now is near 40. ADX indicator above 20 and in upward direction indicates that market is trending. However ADX line indicates the speed , but not the direction.

[caption id="attachment_571" align="aligncenter" width="498" caption="ADX and MACD plotted on NIFTY chart"][/caption]

+DI and -DI lines indicate that in which direction the market is moving. Presently -DI(Red line) is at 36 and +DI(Green line) at 12 , therefore there is quite gape between them. Therefore next few days will be decisive, as the market has got into trending phase, the market has sped up, now only the direction of the market is to be decided.

However, direction of the market is somewhat clear looking to the MACD indicator. MACD lines are continuously going down with negative histogram. Therefore, there is little left to guess about the market direction.

In my view the market is still somewhat costly, there still something to be discounted. The market can very well go down, perhpas NIFTY at 3000 and Sensex at 10500

Hi all…. Got an interesting comment from one of the readers a few days back and so thought of

Hi all.... Got an interesting comment from one of the readers a few days back and so thought of updating a post regarding what is an "STOCK EXCHANGE" and is it mandatory for share trading. To view the comment that inspired this post, you can click here...

Though I have briefed him the answer there, just thought of making a post so that lots of readers can be benefitted too...

In an expert point of view "A stock exchange in short is a corporation or mutual organization which provides facilities for stock brokers and traders, to trade company stocks and other securities. Stock exchanges also provide facilities for the issue and redemption of securities as well as other financial instruments and capital events including the payment of income and dividends". The stock exchange trades includes shares issued by companies, bonds and other pooled investment products. To be able to trade a stock on a certain stock exchange, it has to be listed there.

There were lots of stock exchnages in our country such as coimbatore stock exchange, Bangalore stock exchange, Ahmedabad stock exchange, Hyderabad Stock Exchange, Cochin stock Exchange and lots more but only the stock exchanges that has quite a large number of stocks are listed for trading online or to say they are allowed to be viewed globally representing the particular country. All such stock regulations in our country are handled by a single governing body called SEBI (securities and Exchange Board of India)

The Bombay stock Exchange(BSE) has a nation-wide reach with a presence in 417 cities and towns of India. The S&P CNX Nifty, or simply Nifty, is the leading index for large companies on the National Stock Exchange(NSE) of India. It consists of 50 companies representing 24 sectors of the economy.

No Stock Exchanges!!!... Then no Trading!!!... :(

We are talking 778 point loss in single day in the American stock market Dow Jones. We are going to

We are talking 778 point loss in single day in the American stock market Dow Jones. We are going to continue with that news.

"The stock market was definitely taken by surprise," said Drew Kanaly, chairman and CEO of Kanaly Trust Company, referring to the House vote. "If you watched the news stream over the weekend, it seemed like it was a done deal. But the money is being held hostage to the political process."

Stocks had fallen from the get-go Monday morning. In addition to expectations for the bailout, there was also news that troubled Wachovia had to sell its banking assets to Citigroup. A number of European banks also collapsed.

But the possibility that the House won't pass the bailout plan caused stock losses to accelerate.

"It's a huge disappointment," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank.

Although another version of the plan will likely go before Congress, investors are concerned that passing the bill could be a more drawn-out process.

On Monday afternoon Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said markets around the world are under great stress and that a plan needs to be passed as soon as possible.

"People do expect that there will be some plan put in place, but even before this vote, there was doubt as to whether it would be enough to avert the crisis," said Ken Kam, portfolio manager of the Marketocracy Masters 100 (MOFQX) fund.

Investors thought they would be debating whether the plan was good enough, he said, not whether the plan would even go through.

But the 'good enough' question remains in place.

"We are charting new territory in policy tools and implementation with this program and there's no guarantee that it will work," said Alan Gayle, senior investment strategist at RidgeWorth Investments.

"That a number of institutions haven't been able to last through the negotiations adds to the uncertainty," Gayle said, referring to Washington Mutual's failure on Friday and the buyout of Wachovia Monday.

Stocks are also extremely choppy and volatile as Wall Street moves to the end of the third quarter. Financial institutions and funds are expected to have their books settled before Wednesday, so there is a lot of last-minute scrambling, Gayle said.

Treasury prices rallied, sending yields lower, as investors sought safety in government debt.
