So tonight is the 3rd episode of The Amazing Race season 13. I missed the first 2 episodes but luckily my buddy, Fred, recorded them on DVR so I watched them yesterday. This season the race started on LA to Brazil for the first 2 episodes. On this 3rd episode, they moved to Bolivia. Tonight's race was pretty exciting, even though a team wins a leg, they might lose the next one. I personally would choose the bumpy ride detour, I think it was a lot of fun. The marching band was relaxing though. Anyway, the separated couple, Tina and Ken won again this episode, and the geek duo was eliminated. They weren't the last team arrive to the pitstop, but due to not reading the instruction carefully, they got 30 minutes penalty. Good race guys!

“Did You Push My Sports Bra Off the Ledge?”

"Did You Push My Sports Bra Off the Ledge?"

October 12th, 2008

A Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian readers (I'm with Robin Cherbotsky, Canadian Thanksgiving is totally the "real" thanksgiving), but television does not rest (not that my holiday has been that restful considering my major presentation on Tuesday, but I digress), and The Amazing Race certainly doesn't rest.

And on its third leg, the thirteenth edition of The Amazing Race has finally hits its first apex of interpersonal conflict, what will henceforth be known as "SportsBraGate" (Props to Daniel Fienberg, of Zap2it, for the phrase). There comes a time in every race where we start to come across events which make us ask questions about the circumstances: is it that these racers are just so justifiably insane that they would do these types of things normally, or is it the Race bringing out the worst in them?

For a few teams this week, this becomes quite a challenge, but for the most part it's an entertaining one: with an extremely entertaining Roadblock, the dreaded appearance of the clue reading penalty, and the drama of SportsBraGate, it's clear that The Amazing Race is cycling back around to where we start to identify with the racers, for better or for worse.

SportsBraGate

I want to address this entire issue directly, but first let's put it in the simplest of terms. At the pit stop, which was apparently overlooking a cliff, Christy had set her Sports Bra on a ledge, and then she turned to find that it was gone. Now, her immediate presumption is that Starr purposefully pushed it off the ledge to give them some kind of advantage, or to act out her innermost hatred towards Kelly and Christy. I half expected her to go into some diatribe about how this is 1960s suburbia, and that she was judging them for being divorced, but in reality she's just really, really convinced that Starr is out to get her.

The problem, and why this only continued to escalate as the episode went on, is that Starr is not the kind of person who knows how to use tact to keep these situations from exploding. Take, for example, the scene where Nick is trying to explain to Kelly and Christy that it was an accident while Starr applies makeup fifteen feet away - she needed to be there herself to try to talk some sense into Kelly and Christy. While I know that their persistence in hatred is quite similar to their persistence that they needed to dig into the sand last week in order to find that container, that doesn't mean that Starr doesn't need to be the one to make that effort.

I think that Nick's biggest challenge in this race is keeping his own cutthroat nature (which we saw as part of the roadblock last week) in check in order to not give Starr any ideas: he spent the entire episode trying to smooth over her situations, and nearly had to restrain her from U-Turning Kelly and Christy. In fact, the one time when he couldn't was when she, in the spur of the moment, begged Aja and Ty to U-Turn Kelly and Christy. She was only being defensive, I think, but she was trying to be defensive of their lead and her reputation, two things that (when you can't pick which one you're interested in) will only agitate situations. When it came down to it, and Kelly and Christy squeaked their way through, they are not irrationally angry but have been given some rationale within this episode that (in their mind) is part of a pattern of behaviour. It's like their minds work like the Amazing Editors, crafting ridiculous narrative for the sake of telling stories, except that theirs are crazy instead of entertaining (although, in the hands of the editors, their craziness does kind of shine).

Fortaleza, Brazil to La Paz, Bolivia

We're headed to La Paz, which is the capital of Bolivia, which I knew instinstively since my university Spanish course was kind enough to teach me that (once they're out of South America I'm screwed on this front, at least in Africa). There's zero drama getting there: while two separate flights leave, we get no airport finagling despite the teams arriving in a very strange order that doesn't match up with how they arrived at the airport in the first place.

What we do learn about La Paz, though, is simple: it's high. Very high. The altitude wreaks its havoc almost immediately, and as night turns to day it becomes even worse. It's not often that killer fatigue takes quite so literal a toll on the racers, but it really knocks a few of them out here. While I don't know if Mark and Bill can blame their time penalty, accrued shortly after they started running and moving around, on the thin air, I will say that they were probably the most impacted by the differences. The tasks this week required a lot of physical exertion, which would have been fine if not for the atmospheric factors: in those conditions, they were downright deadly.

The only other notable factor here was that Terence and Sarah picked up a Fern named Ana Maria, who was dropped quite quickly during the detour after she wasn't able to join them on the bike ride. Really, it was a very impractical leg for a Fern, so it was more an element of them having too much free time before the newspapers arrives in order to complete the tasks.

Detour: Musical March or Bumpy Ride

So, at first it was very confusing just where the challenge was in either of these tasks - the bumpy ride seemed straightforward (they gave you a map), and the March sounded like walking. The real trick here was that they were about execution: about the marching bands being very slow unless you got into it with them, and the bikes being capable of going much faster than you might otherwise want to go. We got what we would want from both Detours: some spectacular (and non-life threatening) falls from Kelly and Christy along with some intense passing/U-Turn racing from Bumpy Ride, and Andrew and Dan failing miserably to embrace their band while Marisa and Brooke blow right by them.

Yes, the U-Turn is back - it's an interesting thing, really, and much more interesting than a simple Yield. It also explains why the two tasks weren't THAT difficult. The one thing I do wonder, though, is whether any team who were U-Turned could have ever caught up unless with Mark and Bill's penalty: both seemed to take a fair bit of time, but that could have just been the editing making them into much longer stretches (Although Kelly and Christy sure had a lot of water breaks for a short bike ride). Ultimately, using a U-Turn here could have saved Mark and Bill, but since they had no way of knowing that at the time no team really had a reason to punish someone.

Overall, it's a fun detour: some teams were certainly slower than others, but at the same time there was some funny headgear, some near images, and smart U-Turn play.

Roadblock: The Fighting Cholitas

This is an extremely fun, and potentially damaging, Roadblock, which is just how you want them to be. While it may seem at first to benefit the athletically minded (Considering how well Dallas and Ken do) and those who spent their childhood performing hip tosses on stuffed animals (This may or may not have been me), it was really about being smart - as long as you didn't fail miserably and paid attention, you could suffer through looking like a fool but still complete every move.

So while some needed more than one try, probably rushing it, others like Nick took their time, taking one last runthrough to make sure that he's not going to make a mistake and have to go through the whole process again. Poor Mark (Or Bill?) just had a lot of trouble with it, with the altitude playing such a huge factor in all the running around, and someone like Marisa just isn't quite used to Mexican wrestling as opposed to say, wearing pearls and attending soirees. But for the most part everyone powered through well enough, and it was only unfortunate that none of what they did was really going to matter anyways.

The Pit Stop: So Long, Comic-Con

Mark and Bill's departure was sealed as soon as it was clear the leg wouldn't feature any real chances for making up thirty whole minutes, which was the presumed penalty for their mistake (As indicated by the horns of danger). They raced well last week, which makes it unfortunate that they would have their physical handicap multiplied by a mental error at this stage. After Kelly and Christy failed to read clues last week, and after Terence and Sarah came very close to doing it this time around (and got saved due to her insistence on heading back), it's becoming more of a trend than it should be. Transportation is usually the #1 way people end up making mistakes, so I would think that (before jumping into something or running off) they'd make sure they're reading it correctly.

But, the race doesn't work that way, and most teams are just rolling along fine waiting for their chance for a major communiation misfire. Currently Ken and Tina are dominating, primarily based on his strength (driven out of fear of his wife castrating him for cheating on her) and her willingness to stick with him on that, but they will be just as prone to communication breakdowns (if not more so) once the Race gets down to the nitty gritty.

Cultural Observations

No team breakdown this week, I'm running out of time before Mad Men and want to work in a snack. But, for the most part, things are the same as before: only real difference is that Marisa and Brooke made their way from last to fourth, which at least demonstrates that (while they got lucky with a couple of great taxis) their strategy of taking the easier Detour option could be effective.

Andrew's (or Dan's, but I think it was Andrew) little speech about how he thinks he's attractive feels like they're stretching too hard to fit these two into that stereotype: they're not really that obnoxious, which is why I am glad that most of these attempts to box them in are done entirely in isolation. As long as they've living in their own delusional bubble, there are some strong opportunities for humour in the future. That being said, though, props to the team for not being too muggy with the camera (or the editors for cutting it out) - it nearly murdered Project Runway this season.

From the scenes for next week: we learn that Ty's been indoctrined to go right for Fidel Castro on his "Evil World Leader Allegorical Slandering of My Teammate" scale, and that Starr is not so good with simple directions (although, let's face it, it looked like a lot of fun and natural instincts would take over) and might have broken her arm.

On September 27 I blogged that John McCain's decision to cancel his appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman was a painful decision, because he knew he'd take merciless comedic flack, and that it would last for weeks, if not months. But the alternative was for him to be seen joking around with Dave while the financial crisis unfolded before our appalled eyes. The comparisons to Nero fiddling while Rome burns would have been in the headlines before the first commercial break.

So I advised in my blog - surely one of the most well-read of any others among McCain campaign staffers - that McCain's best course of action would be to let the issue fade a bit and then jump back into the guest appearance with both feet and take his hits.

And it appears that's exactly what he's going to do. I'm glad to see I can make a difference in the world.

CBS Interactive says that it experienced dramatic increases in traffic on its portfolio of broadband

CBS Interactive says that it experienced dramatic increases in traffic on its portfolio of broadband video-enabled Web sites in July (historically a slow month for online growth), the first month following the integration of its operations with CNET Networks. According to figures from comScore Media Metrix cited by CBS Interactive:

CNET.com posted a 22% increase in unique visitors over July, 2007.

BNET.com posted a 19% increase in unique visitors over the preceding month.

CBSSports.com led all major sports sites over the past three months in average minutes per visitor, average pages per visitor, and average visits per visitor. For the months of May, June and July, CBS Interactive says, visitors to CBSSports.com averaged a combined hour and eight minutes on the site--over 10 minutes more than any competitor--and average 8.3 visits per month (with the closest competitor averaging 6.3 visits).

CBS.com saw a 32% increase in unique visitors over the previous month, the largest among broadcast network Web sites. It also had the most engaged audience among the network Web sites, CBS Interactive says, with users spending 20 minutes viewing 21 pages. According to CBS Interactive, the site's traffic growth was driven by the launch of the "CBS HD Gallery" (see [itvt] Issue 7.95 Part 1), which debuted in mid-July.

GameSpot posted a 21% year-over-year increase in unique visitors. According to CBS Interactive, the increase was driven by its E3 convention coverage, which it says generated over 100 million pages viewed and 5 million videos streamed.

Last.fm posted a 20% increase in unique visitors over the preceding month, and a 36% increase in user-engagement since launching a redesigned user interface in June, resulting in its highest-ever traffic. It also saw a 208% year-over-year increase in total minutes, CBS Interactive says, a 62% increase in unique visitors, and a 115% increase in page views.

TV.com saw a 10% increase in unique monthly users over the preceding month.

CHOW saw a 24% month-over-month increase in monthly users and a 256% increase over the previous year.

In a prepared statement, CBS Interactive CEO, Quincy Smith, attributed the growth in traffic on its sites to the company's promotional efforts across its various properties: "Not only are we seeing record highs for several properties but to see them during seasonally slow months attests to the benefit of combination across these great categories," he said. "It also serves to prove the value of on-air call outs and brand building support via purposeful cross-promotion from CBS Television and CBS Radio. With more cross-promotion programs and events on the way, upcoming site updates for many of our leading brands, and a world-class team that knows how to take advantage of the opportunities this combination affords, we're looking forward to the fall and winter."

Créée en 2003, Two and a Half Men (diffusée en France sous le titre Mon oncle Charlie) est la sitcom qui a le plus de succès aux USA. On y retrouve notamment Charlie Sheen (Spin City).

Aside from its militantly Fun capital,[1] the entire geography and demography of Texas sits deep in the heart of Strong.

Texas takes considerable pride in its proprietary history and culture. Texans proudly note that the flags of six nations have flown over Texas, because it implies that nations come and go, but Texas is forever.[2] For a time, Texas was a republic unto itself. The state flag of Texas depicts a Lone Star on a blue field with a single white and a single red stripe. Simply put, it is the flag of a United State.

Everything about Texas is Strong. Dallas is "Big D." Texas's signature industry is Big Oil. Texas leads the nation in executions, with 413 since 1982.[3] And in toxic waste emissions. And in prison construction.[4] The state's official unofficial motto (official because President George Bush 43 uses it) is "Don't mess with Texas." The state's unofficial unofficial motto is "Everything's big in Texas." The University of Texas mascot is the Longhorn. When it became Normal to stop wearing hats in 1960, Texas refused to doff its ten-gallon rebel version, and continues to refuse today.

Dan Rather is from Texas.

Dan Rather is the Alpha journalist who anchored the CBS Evening News for 24 years and one day, from March 9, 1981 through the same date in 2005, the longest service by any anchor in US television history. Rather inherited the ratings leadership from his predecessor Walter Cronkite, lost it, regained it from 1985 to 1989, lost it to Peter Jennings at ABC, and dropped to third place in 1992 when NBC's Tom Brokaw passed him. Since then, CBS has been unable to move up from third place.

Rather made his name through characteristically tough reporting. He was tough on Nixon. He donned a mujahideen headdress in Afghanistan and was tough on the Soviets. He was so tough on George Bush 41 about the Iran-Contra affair that neither George Bush 41 nor George Bush 43 ever granted him another interview. Saddam Hussein did grant him an interview, and Dan was tough on him, too. His sign-off of choice was "Courage." It lasted only for one week, but he did reprise it in his last broadcast, his final act of defiance.

Rather toughened the news culture at CBS so profoundly that his successor in the Evening News anchor chair, Katie Couric, has been unable to leverage her sublimely Normal identity into a higher ranking for her broadcast. CBS seems to have forgotten that Cronkite cried when JFK died, swelled with pride at every success of the space program, and grieved with families as the Vietnam body counts he reported grew nightly. Cronkite was America's incredibly well-informed uncle. In a word, he was Normal, and we loved him for it. Tom Brokaw was Normal, too. Katie Couric is cut from the same ideal cloth as these two greatest anchors. If she and CBS can embrace the Normal and let go of the Strong, the world is theirs for the taking.

A few weeks after the preceding paragraphs were laid down, in the New York Times dated October 11, 2008, journalist Jacques Steinberg noted the beginnings of a possible turnaround for Couric's fortunes as anchor. Among similar developments, Steinberg pointed to a recurring segment in Couric's election coverage called Primary Questions, in which "all of the major candidates...were asked the same 10 questions about character, including the last time they had been angry about something or whether trust in a marriage should be a barometer of trust in office."[5] At last, it seems that Ms. Couric has turned her gift for the interview format into a quest for answers that will allow Normal people to evaluate a complex issue with supreme confidence and fluency. While she remains third in a three-person race, Ms. Couric's position on the inside rail of the Normal viewer identity bodes well for her, especially if she has the Courage to press her advantage.

This post is an excerpt from How Sex Sells: The Persuasive Power of Identity, a work in process.

[1] I love the "Keep Austin Weird" campaign that encourages city residents to support quirky local businesses.

Segunda, no tienen subtitulos.

En este momento puedes encontrar algunos capitulos de Star Trek, Mac Gyver, Beverly Hills 90210, The Young and The Restless.

On October 10th 2008, Youtube introduced full-length network television shows interpsersed with advertising, right on the heels of pleasing music companies on October 7th by integrating retailers like Amazon and iTunes with click-to-buy buttons.

According to New York Times, Youtube made a deal with CBS (go CBS!) to introduce “Dexter,” “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Star Trek” although I couldn't find Dexter on CBS's full episode playlists and I found Mac Gyver.

If you're used to watching full episodes of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, South Park, Prison Break, The Office, Grey's Anatomy then you know how this works.

[caption id="attachment_209" align="alignleft" width="484" caption="Youtube will place ads before, in between and after full length TV shows"][/caption]

The video ads you see on television roll before, in-between, and after the TV show. You can't scroll out the ads; clicking on the video during the ad takes you to the sponsor's website. Youtube added a Theater View feature that enlarges the video and darkens the rest of the screen. You can still go full screen unlike some network TV web sites.

So, what could the implications of Youtube adding TV shows with ads be?

More entertainment at office.

Youtube becomes a stronger competitor to Netflix. (Netflix made a deal with CBS to stream modern shows like Numb3rs and CSI last month link)

Networks could cast niche shows on Youtube that didn't make economical sense before.

Media planning becomes more dynamic; at least in a small pie of broadcast there's more precise viewer statistics now.

To be a better creative brand manager, communication strategist, media planner, copy writer, art director, and adfilm director we'd have to be "in the online state of mind". Expect more actionable spots.

Your webmaster and your video commercial people must be bffs (for the uninitiated, that's best friends forever). If someone clicks through the youtube ad to your Web site, they better get the impression that you were expecting them and know where they came from and make them feel comfortable. A link to www.domainname.com won't be enough.

On the other hand, many brand messages don't require that you click to go to a Web site. I see many ads I would like to go back to, it is not important to me when I see it, but some other time I think, "Hey I saw an ad for this thing that I'm considering to buy, damn, I don't quite remember when they said the sale ends; wish I knew." Here there's an opportunity for a bookmarking company. Delicious, Reddit, Digg and the ilk should start thinking about helping us out here. Imagine Youtube integrates your favourite bookmarking tool so while you are watching a commercial that is semi-interesting you hit any key on your keyboard and the ad or link is saved without disturbing you. Youtube would please advertisers even more.

Projecting the future on the basis of Google's intent with its deal with NBC to sell ads on NBC's behalf for NBC's cable channels like MSNBC, Oxygen and the Sci Fi network, you can see that Google will become a stronger player in the video ad sales business. While I don't think I understand the intricacies enough to suggest that this threatens network companies, I think it's a good news for producers. If you are a small, independent yet professional producer who believes you can make good content but tired of pitching your shows to TV giants who ask you to "suit it for the masses" then try Youtube with ads. I once worked for a start-up production company in India started by a bunch of inspirational intellectuals capable of content a lot smarter than they were producing for national TV. I think it is imperative that Youtube enables independent producers to insert ads in their content just like Adsense to keep the You in Youtube relevant. I have no doubt Google is thinking about that (and I don't mean ads in each and every video).

Are you an ad salesman? Google will probably be hiring hundreds more soon.

While all that is awesome, the big issue for Google is how they maintain the internet without borders. Most of the comments to the Youtube blog post about the news bicker about the feature available only in the US. Sure, international media rights licensing can be very complicated that doesn't allow Youtube to open this out to the world. But netizens don't care about it, why should they, it is the INTERNET stupid.

People, what other implications do you think are possible? Do you agree/disagree with the ones here?

A couple months ago Al Gore's We Campaign shifted from warm and fuzzy commercials calling for action to a harder-edged spot demanding 100 percent clean energy within ten years. Then a couple weeks back the campaign came out with another, even edgier spot pointing the finger of blame directly (and correctly) at Big Oil and its lobbying largesse.

On Wednesday, I received an email from the Alliance for Climate Protection’s Cathy Zoi telling me how ABC was refusing to run the ad because it contained a shot of the Capitol that somehow violated ABC's controversial issues policy. ABC offered a lame response that even after reading several times still makes no sense to me:

"Per our Guidelines, national buildings may be used in advertising provided the depictions are incidental to the advertiser's promotion of the product or service. Given the messages and themes of this commercial, the image of the Capital building is not incidental to this advertising. Please replace the image with one that is not of another national building or monument. Thank you."

ABC of course has absolutely no problem running ads from Big Oil, Big Coal and just about anybody else willing to push their dirty energy agenda. And ABC is the only network that has refused to run the ad -- MSNBC, CNN, Headlines News, Fox News, and CBS had no such difficulties.

I received another email from Zoi today telling me that over 150,000 people had written ABC to complain in just the past two days. I then took the opportunity to shoot off my own email to ABC. And their response? A lame form letter totally unrelated to the issue that basically said I shouldn't expect to hear back from them and reminded me that digital TV is coming in 2009. You'd think that after 150,000 complaints, they'd at least have a lame form letter at least vaguely related to the complaint.

Our friends at Grist poked ABC again and again for a better explanation of why a non-profit organization pushing for clean energy is controversial, but the richest corporations in the world pushing more of the same old dirty energy so they can rake in billions is perfectly fine. They didn't get a response, but the Guardian managed to cough one up:

"All of our advertising is reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and the context of this particular ad was determined not to be acceptable per our policy on controversial issue advertising."

Paloma was evicted on the Kota tribe. She was voted off almost unanimously. Only Kelly voted for Ace. Ace didn't like tribal. It was as unpleasant experience. Ace wants to get rid of Kelly since she voted for him. At Fang, Randy wants them to eat one meal a day. There isn't enough rice left. Randy and his buddies go to pick some fruit. Dan, Matty, Susie and Randy talk strategy. Randy wants to get rid of GC, he's bad news. GC and Crystal are aware that they are talking strategy, but they can't really do anything against this.

It's time for the next challenge. Today the tribes will rank their members accordance to importance. They will mix the tribes up, that's a certain fact. The tribes spend a few minutes answering some questions. They rank their members. Marcus was ranked #1 in the Kota. Ace, Bob, Charlie, Jacky, Corinne, Sugar, and Kelly follow in the rankings. Ace thinks that Kelly is devastated. He doesn't like her, he calls her a whiny little cow. On the Fang tribe, #1 is Matty, followed by Dan, Randy, Crystal, Kenny, GC and Susie.

The survivors are told to drop their buffs, it's time to change tribes. Marcus and Matty are captains on their respective tribes. Marcus picks Dan, Charlie, Randy, Corinne, Susie, and Bob. Matty picks Ace, Crystal, Jacky, Kenny, Kelly, and GC. Charlie has got a bromance going on with Marcus. One after the other, the tribemembers pick their next members.

Sugar is left alone. She will go to Exile Island. She will rejoin the tribes after the next tribal council. She will join the tribe which will have lost a member.

The new Kota tribe has three old Fang members in their tribe. Randy knows that if they go into tribal, they will choose one of the old Fang members to go.

Sugar chooses comfort since she has the idol. She's got some fruits to munch on and a hammock to lie in. It's like a little holiday for her.

At Fang, Ace makes himself immediately useful. Kelly, Jacquie and Kenny are talking. Crystal hears that Kelly felt like an outcast. Crystal tells Ken that Kelly doesn't like Ace or Jacquie. Kelly is talking with the old Fang. Kelly says that Ace sleeps with Jacquie and Sugar. Kelly says that she wants to get rid of Ace. They all agree with her. Kenny is happy that she's sticking with them. He said twice that she was hot.

The next day, the tribes get tree mail. They get a lacrosse stick and a ball. Marcus is concerned with who to evict when they get to tribal. He's hesitating between Randy and Susie. Susie does more in camp, so if he judges on that, Randy would go. It all depends upon their performance in the immunity challenge. This means that if Randy does a poor performance and that Kota loses, he would get evicted.

It's time for the immunity challenge. The game is a cross between waterpolo and lacrosse. The tribes will be in small boats with paddles. It takes three points to win. Jacquie is first at the ball, but loses it. Marcus takes it. Randy scores. That was good. The next round, Marcus is first at the ball. Marcus passes again to Randy and he scores again. They've got it down to a technique. Crystal is whining as usual. Marcus loses the ball to ace in the next round. Kelly isn't doing anything. Marcus passes the ball to Randy once again, but he is too short. Randy scores again. Kota wins immunity easily.

Sugar will join Fang and Ace after her return from Exile. Either Kelly or Ace will be a goner. At Fang, Ace thinks that they lost badly. GC is very vocal at camp. GC tells Kenny that he sucks. Matty says that Jacquie was pretty good. Jacquie says that it was hard to play defence. GC thinks that based on their performance, Kelly will be a goner. GC talks with Crystal and Kenny. They hesitate, because of strategy and that
