I have got a new tie with a white shirt from Old Navy a week ago. At the moment, I was matching the tie with the white shirt for 30 minutes. Result? love it!! Looks a bit like a nerd, but in style.

The tie for $20, the shirt for $10.

People sometimes ask me why I wear tie even though I don't work for a company. Why? because I feel like I am in an uniform. Make me feel mature.(because I usually don't act as an adult. -_-;) I've loved wearing tie since high school, but couldn't wear in college. And now, I feel it again. YAY!

“Shit, I paid seven dollars for this?”

Of course, she would have to say it out loud. Vivian never does know when sharing time is over. A group of tweens is watching us. They look like the kind of people who would go to the scene of an accident just to watch somebody else's misery.

“I mean, hell, I could do better in my fucking backyard!”

Preteen giggles. I hate children. Vivian doesn't even hear them, she's too busy being indignant. I sigh, knowing her path of righteousness may last a while.

“Lorig, are you even listening to me?”

“I am, I am.” I'm not. I tend to tune her out when she starts ranting. Vivian would make an excellent martyr but her skills are wasted here.

Her glum eyes look across the fairground. We've already been on the ferris wheel, played some of the games. We've already eaten the bad food, seen the strange folk at the side show: the Twin Dwarves, the Blind Waltzers, and the Bearded Lady. There must be more.

She harrumphs and looks at me, waiting. She wants me to figure it out, give her something to do.

I cast my eye about, past the Three-Dollar-A-Toss booth, past the half-empty popcorn stand, “There.”

She follows my gaze.

“A fortune-teller.” She states it, waiting for me to contradict her.

“Exactly, unless you're too scared.”

She can't resist that one. For a moment, I think she's going to laugh at me for using such a grade school trick but she just rolls her eyes and heads towards the tent. I follow her through the curtain and wait as our eyes adjust to the darkness.

Silks. No vials, skulls, crystals, amulets. Just a room, the walls and floor covered with cloths.

“Ah,” an alto's voice sounds in a sigh as a curtain is pushed aside and a woman materialises. She has a snake (charmer)'s eyes and a mouth to match. Beautiful isn't the right word. This woman is a sweet release, the poison in a suicide's veins.

Vivian doesn't see it. She holds the woman's gaze, a challenge.

“Vivian...” I edge away from the woman, no sudden movements. I reach for Vivian's wrist but she jerks it away.

“How much?”

“How much is it worth?” A snake's hiss.

“Vivian.” She brushes me away.

“What am I paying for?”

“Pictures... as many as you like.”

“Viv-”

“A picture?” she smirks, “A picture's worth a thousand words.”

Smart ass.

“Done.” The charmer has vanished, leaving the snake free to creep from its basket, “have a seat.”

Their eyes locked, they sit with their legs tucked beneath them.

The woman doesn't pull out a crystal ball or a deck of Tarot. She doesn't examine Vivian's palm. A lover's stare hangs in the air between them and the third wheel stands near the door.

My friend smiles. Stands. Looks to me.

“And you,” the woman hisses, “would you also like... a picture?”

“No, thank you.” I hate the quiver in my voice.

The woman's eyes caress my insides. My lashes flicker downwards and she stands and leaves the way she came.

Without a word, Vivian and I leave the snake pit. We haven’t walked far before she looks back at the tent, memorizing the sight for future reference.

“Don’t go back.”

“And why not? You didn't see what I did. She showed me everything.” I've heard Vivian drunk too often before to not recognize the tone of her voice.

“Well then, if you've already seen everything, there's nothing left.” She rolls her eyes. “Please, I just-” I stumble, “I just don’t like that woman.” How could I sanely express there was something wrong with her eyes?

“Fine. Don’t go back. Just don’t try to stop me. I haven’t seen everything yet but I will.” She pauses, “I saw your future, did you know that? I saw your fucking future. I know more about your life than you do. I don’t care what you do: don’t go back, live in ignorance. I don’t give a shit.” She smiles to herself, “Damn, if only you’d seen what I-”

“What?” Her eyes go wide and her mouth opens and closes. “Viv, what’s wrong with you?” Mute, she clutches her throat, her lips screaming my name.

I m starting to think more people should challenge me, i seem to work a lot faster :)

Using the right tools for the job is always a good idea. Sometimes I forget that even though I can

Using the right tools for the job is always a good idea. Sometimes I forget that even though I can knit washcloths/dishrags/handtowels or whatever you want to call them=those cotton things, on straight needles, perhaps using my trusty old Denise Interchangeable Knitting Needles are the best tool for the job. Lightweight, bendy, easy on the hands, wrists and elbows, low to no drag on cotton yarn; just all around good, better, best tools for pretty much any job. I could put the little stoppers on and make them into bendy straights but I am forever dropping one, so circular used as straights really works the best too.

So, back to the dishcloth/washrag/hand towel thing. They are this year's christmas theme. Inexpensive, colorful, quick and easy to knit or crochet and heck, who doesn't need a nice cotton cloth to do a nice regular job around the house?

I figure I need at least 12 sets are needed for family members and a few friends, and by a set I mean:

two dishcloths

one longer hand/dishtowel (hanging or straight)

one sponge type dishthingie like a Tribble or one of the many tawashi patterns there are out there on the internet, either knit and crochet or a combination of both.

I haven't decided on who gets what set or if colors really matter. Except that I do want Jessica and Joe's set to be red and white because they are a newish couple and I know that when you are just starting out you tend to want things to match your decor. Those of us that have been around for a while (keeping up a home) know that color doesn't matter if you are talking about mopping up a spill or whatnot. Oh and then there are the more masculine colors for the male relatives because I don't think they would take kindly to a lot of girlie colors, or maybe I only think it matters? Most of it really depends on the mood I am in and just how sick of green and yellow I am going to be by the end of this particular large many itemed project.

Onto photos, details and links!

Set number 1:

eLoomanator's Diagonal Knit Dishcloth (.pdf pattern)

I still have a few items to do, but in order to do those I need to find a matching pale green, pink or brown cotton to use for the hanging towel and the tawashi.

The following set is complete except for finding a button for the hanging towel:

The small green/blue/yellow cloth on the upper right is a Ballband Dishcloth
The cloth on the lower right is a combination of the Ballband dishcloth on both ends, and a basketweave pattern in the middle, same set-up for the hanging towel. The round variegated cotton sponge is a Tribble.

This following set is complete!

The long dishtowel is from a free pattern called Vignes, the square light green cloth is called Baby Fern Stitch Dishcloth. There is another Tribble, this time using alternating variegated and solid green.

This is the finished dark green square from the previous photo. Another free pattern called Little Shells.

On this one I finished the two dishrags:

Both variations on the Little Starbursts Dishcloth. And I have started on the handtowel tonight:

Which is a Christmas Lace Kitchen Hanging Hand Towel. Once that is done, probably tomorrow I will also need to do a tawashi.

And finally, the start on set 5, just one dishrag done:

The Squidge Cloth.

It still seems like a lot to go but I have plenty of time. If I get all the sets done I may just keep adding to them, or do extra sets for myself, who knows?

Peace!

Hello Treasure Hunters!

Hello Treasure Hunters!

I bought a trunk load of beautiful day & sun dresses as well as knits top & sets from the 30s, 40s,50s, 60s era at an estate sale this summer and just packed them away in plastic bags. I knew when I took them home with me I would have to do some work cause they wreaked of mothball smell!

First thing you need to do is air them out in your garage for few days then wash them, put them in the dryer, hair dry only and hang them out side on the clothes line! Also heard that freezing cold temperature works wonders! Remember Fresh air is your best friend, and lots of it seems to be the best thing!

Another great remedy is hanging outside but a vinegar rinse is a good start before hanging. Add the vinegar to the rinse water as it will "fight" with any soap or detergent you use if you wash the item first.

Also remember that a little work goes a long way, think long terms! if you take care of your garments or many of your treasures, there's a great chance you can pass them down to the next generation! Now how cool is that!

Oh by the way checkout our ebay store for great goodies! click on the link / photo below to shop!

The famous "Shroud of Turin" is back in the news again today as a Colorado couple researching the shroud has disputed the radiocarbon dating of the alleged burial cloth of Jesus. Now, news comes that Oxford has agreed to help them reexamine the findings.

[caption id="attachment_404" align="alignright" width="211" caption="Credit: Ellen Jaskol, Los Angeles Times"][/caption]

From the Los Angeles Times:

The tie that binds John and Rebecca Jackson is about 4 feet by 14 feet, woven of herringbone twill linen. It once led to their romance; years later, it still dominates their thoughts and fills their conversations.

It brought Rebecca, an Orthodox Jew, to the Catholic Church; it led John to suspend himself from an 8-foot-tall cross to study how blood might have stained the cloth. Together, the two have committed to memory every crease, scorch mark and unexplained stain in their years-long pursuit of the mystery:

Is the Shroud of Turin, which allegedly bears the image of a crucifixion victim, the burial cloth of Jesus?

In 1988, science seemed to put that question to rest.

Radiocarbon dating by three separate laboratories showed that the shroud originated in the Middle Ages, leaving the "shroud crowd" reeling. Shroud skeptics responded, "We told you so." The Catholic Church admitted that it could not be authentic. Many scientists backed away.

But John Jackson, one of the shroud's most prominent researchers, was among those who insisted that the reuslts made no sense. Too much else about the shroud, they said, including characteristics of the cloth and details of the image, suggested that it was much older.

Twenty years later, Jackson, 62, is getting his chance to challenge the radiocarbon dating. Oxford University, which participated in the original radiocarbon testing, has agreed to work with him in reconsidering the age of the shroud.

If the challenge is successful, Jackson hopes to be allowed to reexamine the shroud, which is owned by the Vatican and stored in a protective chamber in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Turin, Italy.

This should be interesting to see if the original findings are overturned. I do not foresee this happening but then again, stranger things have happened. Many believers believe that Jesus imprinted his image on his burial cloth during his resurrection, while others believe that the shroud is the authentic burial cloth but that the image was formed by natural processes.

Skeptics are convinced that the shroud is a forgery created by a medieval artist seeking to display it to relic-hungry pilgrims. Only time will tell. Thoughts?

By Emily Maltby
Fortune

Jason and Rodney Carr hate to raise their prices. Their Gardena, Calif.-based distributor of curtains and home fabrics, Softline Home Fashions, usually keeps its costs low by sourcing materials overseas: 100% of their raw goods and 80% of their finished products come from China. But recently, China hasn't paid off the way it used to. In the past five months, the Carrs have seen their manufacturing expenses rise 20%.

It's a battle every day," says Rodney Carr. "We are not going to cut salaries, staff or any other assets that are important to the company. Sometimes we compensate by raising prices, but mostly we're just eating the additional costs."

Once the epicenter of low-cost manufacturing, China is becoming an increasingly expensive place to do business, thanks to a series of sweeping mandates introduced to pacify discontented Chinese citizens and global critics. This month's Olympics will be a coming out party 10 years in the making. Aware that the world is watching, China has intensified its efforts to clean up its domestic affairs by enacting stricter environmental and labor controls, increasing its land and commodity prices, and slashing the export-tax rebates that helped create the country's giant trade surplus.

Environmentalists, economists and labor watchdogs praise these initiatives as critical steps in the right direction for both China and the global economy. But coupled with the falling dollar and the rising yuan, these movements have put the pinch on many small U.S. outsourcers struggling to keep up with China's rapid changes.

Melanie Corpstein, CEO of Adorable Originals, a Phoenix firm that manufactures toys and clothing, has seen the profit margins for her line of dolls shrink since she began manufacturing them in China in 2003.

"In this economy we are in no position to ask the customer to pay more," she says. "Though my company continues to grow, China's shift has made me closely monitor other expenses, such as how many hours my team works and how much our office supplies cost."

What's driving the cost spike? No one change bears primary responsibility for the sharp increase, but added together, a complex web of adjustments have altered the economics of doing business in China.

I am trying to sift to the bottom of this issue, with my own study of 1 Corinthians 11, to answer ot

I am trying to sift to the bottom of this issue, with my own study of 1 Corinthians 11, to answer others that may have questions about it. This is my own personal study of the covering, and I am not trying to decide for others, just posting my thoughts on it. :)

Most people believe that the covering mentioned in 1 Corinthians 11 was the hair and only the hair, because of verse 15 "But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering."
(Emphasis mine)
While I believe the hair was given to the woman for her natural covering and glory, I also believe there is another, material covering. Notice where it says A covering. It doesn't specify the hair as the only covering!

For take note, reading verse 6 with the hair as the only covering:

For if the woman be not covered [with her hair... resulting in baldness], let her also be shorn [her bald head cut further]:
(Emphasis mine)

Now, let's read verse 6 with an additional covering and hair:
For if the woman be not covered [with a cloth covering], let her also be shorn [also]:
(Emphasis mine)

The first doesn't make sense, but the second makes complete sense.

To have an uncovered head, if hair were the only covering, you would have to remove your hair. Well, it's simply not possible to remove and put on your hair! And not only that, you can't have an uncovered head with no hair and be shorn with short hair at the same time, can you?

Also, if the hair were the covering, consider this: every Christian man's head would need to be bald for the rest of his life. Why? Because verse 7 says a man is not to cover his head! If hair were the only covering, a man would need to have no hair on his head.

For a man indeed ought not to cover his head [with hair], forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
(Emphasis mine)

Long hair is a woman's glory (verse 15) and that glory should be veiled when in the presence of God.
And now, if the hair isn't the one and only covering, Christian men now don't have to be bald!

"**Consider this possibility: when the righteous angels check out their ministry missions they see that it‟s okay to involve a woman in a spiritual event when they can see that she is in submission. But when the veil is missing they may anxiously look at God and say, “What do I do?” The message is a confusing one to them. Angels operate by signs. Remember the blood on the doorposts? Angels may have been ordered to look especially for veils! This may explain why women who wear one often have abundant witnessing opportunities, Angels may usher people to us because they can spot us!

Now, the woman has a glory (her hair) and she is a glory, the glory of the man. Out of deference for Christ, in the worship service, man‟s glory must be covered. Hence the reason for the godly woman to refrain from asserting her presence in the sacred assembly, by remaining silent during the service and by covering her most glorious feature, her hair. Watchmen Nee said, “It is through the sisters that God‟s governmental system is to be displayed.

Cover your glory out of a deep desire to have others see Christ‟s glory, alone.**"
