Christopher McMahon is 33-years-old. He’s woken up by his sister every morning at 8:30AM, pulls off his sleep mask with a grunt, and gets ready to leave. He’s not a morning person. At 10AM, a white van beeps the horn and he leaves his house to go to Hudson Milestones, an organization for the betterment of adults with developmental disabilities. McMahon, who lives in Jersey City, NJ, has Down Syndrome.

Down Syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that results when a person “inherits all or part of an extra copy of chromosome 21,” according to Encarta. The defect causes mental retardation. For McMahon, it greatly affects his mental capacity and his speech; he has a bad stuttering problem that many times affects his ability to express himself...

You asked me for some info on Bay Ridge and its people. Where to begin? I guess I’d start off by saying most people from Bay Ridge would tell you they’re from Brooklyn rather than New York City, which is more commonly associated with the glitter and glamour and trendiness which characterize neighbouring Manhattan. There are parts of Brooklyn which are quite trendy as well, but they tend to be just across the river from Manhattan, with a view of its breathtaking skyline. Bay Ridge is a working class neighbourhood, one of many that make up the Borough of Brooklyn, which considers itself quite independent from nearby Manhattan...

I humbly apologize to those readers familiar with international – or more precisely – Japanese cinema when I sacrilegiously ask the question, “Have you ever heard of Tatsuya Nakadai?” Most Yankee readers probably haven’t, and that’s a damn crime, as he is unquestionably the greatest actor in the world today.

Since the 1950s, he has galvanized cinema audiences the world over (albeit in this country relegated to art houses and, ironically, grind houses) with his powerful brooding performances – transcending the language barrier with his trademark penetrating glare. Truth be told, those magnificent eyes can literally stare you to death...

Sex and more sex, that’s all I see all around me here in America. After a while it gets really an

Sex and more sex, that’s all I see all around me here in America. After a while it gets really annoying. Being single and doing my best to practice my faith to the best of my abilities is really hard. I refrain myself from doing anything stupid with girls and it gets more challenging everyday as I grow up in America.

Sometimes I think to myself, what is this country is coming to? Divorce rates are equal to marriage rates, couples having kids before marriage and they usually don’t get married, and sex is like an everyday thing like kissing. Then recently I read a story about a group of teenage girls in high school who made a pact to get pregnant. They got the sex hungry boys of their high school to get them pregnant. One of the girls couldn’t get pregnant with a high school boy so, that desperate girl decided to get a random homeless guy to grind her, and she eventually got pregnant by him. It’s worse when it’s publicized by TV stars; Jamie Lynn Spears, a 16-year-old Nickelodeon kid star, got pregnant and she’s willing to give birth and raise the child. The question is what is a 16-year-old girl doing having sex at that age? But then again her older sister Britney Spears slept with so many guys which kind of make sense.

Some times I wonder what my kids will be faced with as they grow up in this changing world, but then I suppose my parents had the same worries about me when they came to America. I remember hearing a story fro ma friend about an Arab guy, from Saudi Arabia, who came to America and lost control when he saw a girl with a tank top walking around. That guy got overexcited and he actually jumped on the girl; he couldn’t control himself.

Brothels, prostitution, porno sites, porno movies, porno pics, it’s ridiculous and I’m not talking about America, I’m talking about Bangladesh. I hear all these stories about how girls and guys are having sex in the narrow corners of BUET school or in other Dhaka universities. You type in “Bangladesh college” on YouTube and you’ll see videos of couples showing off their kissing techniques in college campuses in Bangladesh. Sometimes I wonder will it be smart for me to go back to Bangladesh to get married. Bangladeshi girls either have an “affair” with a guy secretly, and those girls are the ones who can’t go alone anywhere. Other Bangladeshi girls are the ones who can go anywhere with a guy and their parents know it and most likely they have lost their virginity. My friends and cousins have warned me that there may be a chance I may run into a slut in Bangladesh.

I’m currently reaching the marriage age and I’m hesitant about marriage since it’s hard to find out who is telling the truth and who is lying in Bangladesh. I was told girls over there will look at my looks and money, and their parents will look at my dad’s money and my US passport the most, which is typical Desi judgment. Let’s see how it goes.

In the near past, there were a wonderful natural environment and fresh air to live but now, for the cause of industrialization, the environment of Savar area lost its ecological balance. Rivers and canals are filth with chemical waste dumping. As a result, not only people are affected but also water beings. The ecological balance is destroyed day by day and we are welcoming the global warming.
Using housing development surrounding the the fastest grow¬ing Savar area, effects on specific social, economic, political, climatic, and material environments. It will be argued that new forms of housing neighborhoods may learn from local heritage and site specificity to present a serious alternative to the contemporary housing production.
Located in a wide valley that has allowed for low-density urbanization with few limitations, This growth has resulted in the need for more water, much of it now coming from the Bangshay River. But this has also being polutedfor so many man-made reason that creates a lot of desasterin that area. Lack of infrastructure, has led to increased air and water pollution as well as people are suffering for so many deaseases. These specific site circumstances and limited natural resources has made a huge environmental and ecological imbalance in that area.

It has been raining heaving since early morning, as if no end of the downpour, as I looked down from my window, it was not surprising to see the ground submerged in water, water logging everywhere. For the rains, the weather became cool and comfortable. However as soon as I had glanced through the headlines, the news was another fuel price hike. This time it’s more or less a kangaroo’s jump or a pole vault jumps. From today the price of octane has been fixed at 90 Taka from Taka 67 per liter, similarly the cost of petrol has been raised from Taka 87 to Taka 65 and diesel and kerosene from Taka 40 to Taka 55. LP Gas from Taka 600 to Taka 1000 per cylinder. This surely another blow for the citizens who live on limited income. The transport cost as well as cost of other necessary items will also have another hike as an aftermath of the fuel price hike.

It has been estimated that the number of hardcore pure in Bangladesh has raised from 60 million to 90 million during the span of last 12 months and this price hike will add more to that figure.

The poor is becoming more poor day by day, it is believed that now more than 30 million people do not have one square meal per day.

Surely, we need to have a remedy for this disorder. If we say that we do not have the means to at least ensure three simple square meals for the people then it is absurd. Surely there are means and ways to at least ease the pain of the ultra poor who thrive for hunger.

Alas, the world wide scarcity of food in the present days have pushed the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals far away, which was supposed to be attained by 2015.

Planning is on for an exhibition with 3 other artists later this year and I'm looking forward to it. You'll find the details here as soon as it is finalised. This project will have me working towards a deadline and it's something I'm looking forward to right now. I hope when the pressure mounts I dont regret feeling this way!

Watermelons are one of the best fruits to have in summer. It quenches your thirst in a jiffy. In Dhaka, you find street vendors selling slices of the fruit near bus stops to thirsty travellers.

Few days back, while I felt a dire need of a spiritual asylum to feed my soul for a fervent hunk of Peace or may be, to get rid of this maddening urban busy lifestyle, I’ve started doing a bit of spiritual window shopping by browsing different websites related to Yoga and other form of meditation techniques. And surprisingly, Rafi Hosain called me, the country representative (Course Teacher) of Art of Living in Bangladesh.

Poverty and Urban stress are the common attributes of a cosmopolitan city life. May be these dilemmas have different parameters, notions concerning the civilized society and the L.D.C.s. We may never really understand the daily reality of those, whose lives are shaped by these conditions, but we can readily understand that their numbers have grown and that we are all affected by this symptom of the growing disparity of wealth in today’s world.

Today, with 21st century’s countless scientific & technological innovations, with some buzz words like free market economy and it’s voracious mass impact on people’s life specially in developing countries & the crazy mustang of consumerism, an urban individual grows up for the coming rat race of career hunt. We envision of a global community that is socially and economically livable and sustainable by all her citizens but what we oversee or ignore are the frictions, career rat races, unfaith, discriminations & deprivations in it’s myriad forms resulting in to stress disorder and other forms of physical ailment.

The reality is you cannot remove these barriers overnight, what we can do; make ourselves well equipped to fight back an individual’s emotional tantrums with the quick changing unpredictable urban-cosmopolitan consequences which may result to urban stress disorders.

“Art of Living Foundation” is dedicated to serving society by strengthening the individual. The Organization serves this by offering programs that eliminate stress, create a sense of belonging, restore human values, love, and compassion and encourage people from all backgrounds, religions, and cultural traditions to come together in celebration and service. In short the goal is to put the smile back on every face. This can be an ideal approach to enlighten every individual of mother earth, by holding firmly the hands of Yoga (meditation) - the magical divine path of mind & body control techniques.....

When I was a kid my mother used to take me along with her when she went on the monthly grocery shopp

When I was a kid my mother used to take me along with her when she went on the monthly grocery shopping spree. We used to go to either the Gulshan "Kacha Bazar" or the one behind New Market. During those times I was able to gaze in awe at the different types of people you usually see in these places. The buyers, the sellers , the vendors, the random people running about - the colors, the noise, the stink [lol], the random smell of spices or vegetables - everything was so amazing at that age. And when we used to go to Gawsia or Eastern Plaza - the then funkiest of shopping places, [ Gawsia has managed to hold on to its fame but i don't think Eastern Plaza has ] - the whole feel of going about shops full of colorful fabulous clothes or Tinkling gold Jewelery was so much full of excitement - that I sometimes laugh about it now. This was all maybe 10 or 11 years back and Dhaka was then a place full of shops for me. Roads seemed less "jammed" and people seemed more happier !

But then puberty hit me - and I grew up and my view of Dhaka changed, and increased in knowledge. Dhaka now seems to be a place full of people, traffic jams and yes a lot more historical than it seemed before. Places like the Dhaka university Campus or Motijheel seem more interesting and make me more curious than they used to even a few years back. Places in Dhaka that I would really want to know more about and visit would be the following

Curzon Hall - I hope I have the spelling right. Recently this place has been renovated and looks almost as beautiful as it did before. I just love driving past this place, witnessing its red brick walls amongst a garden of green.

Puran Dhaka - A city within a city. Its like a whole different world exists in this place. The people and their dialect, the "Food", the ancient buildings and the narrow impossible to tread on streets - this is one of the most seducing and wonderful places to be in Dhaka.

Geneva Camp - I would like to visit this place for the historical importance and to hear from the people living here their thoughts on the Liberation War and their struggle to live in Bangladesh as refugees.

Motijheel - This is one place i cannot categorize. It has so many interesting sites to see that it shall take me an year to finish listing the places i want to visit here.

Gawsia - I know I have been in this place but I dont think its lost its charm with me yet. It seems more interesting and more big whenevet I visit this place - the countless passages in and out of this place is a definate way to get lost so I really do not want to venture on my own here !

RayerBazar Boddhobhumi - I have heard SO much about this place and seen so much of it that this is one place i really really do not want to miss out on.

Till now these are THE places I definately want to venture out to. But if people dont stop with building roads which are of no use and do not get rid of the railway routes within the city - I do not think I would want to spend hours sleeping through countless traffic jams to reach my destination. It does get very irritating now being stranded in the roads for hours on and on. But I guess things shall get better in the future. [ hopefully. ]

When 23-year-old Elizabeth Bowman leaves her house on Virginia Avenue in Jersey City, NJ, her skin color is one that is accepted by those that live around her area. She’s very pretty, ladylike and wears business attire as she gets ready for a day of work and school. When she opens her mouth to speak, every word is very well thought out, intelligent and proper. It is clear she is well educated. Unfortunately, everything other than her skin color is not something that is fully understood or accepted by her peers. Bowman who is a black woman, constantly hears, “You’re acting white. You can’t act white.”

I was foretasting the delightful smell of mountain fresh wild flowers blowing with the gusting, hilly winds across one mountain peak to another peak, while taking a trip from Darjeeling to Sanguu, - one of the resting valleys on the lap of the Himalayan mountain ranges, in India. May be that “momentary celestial joy” was hidden in my memory, which becomes visible to me after so many years, like crystal-clear photo memories while listening to “Back home” by Danielle Blakey! Her music will sweep you away into a blissy trance doesn’t matter where you are!

Danielle has a very unique and spontaneous attitude of singing especially when she is pleasantly wild with her mellow riotous country-rock style. I can’t resist to add a comment here by one of the famed Country Guitar virtuoso David Malachowski (Shania Twain’s former guitarist) -- “I’ve seen the future of country music, and it's name is Danielle Blakey”.

2008 offers an alternative for music collectors trapped in cyber space: The Brooklyn Record Riot, to be held Sunday June 29th at the Warsaw in Greenpoint. The resurgence of vinyl as a medium has received much press, as all most bands in 2008 release their music on record as well as on digital form. Watching passionate customers at the Fort Greene flea market or at local stoop sales reveals a simple fact: Brooklyn folk love records! And while they may get much of their music from the internet, there is still something to be gained from seeing and touching an item before purchasing it, and getting friendly advice from professional music dealers. There's no better feeling than meeting another fan of your favorite obscure band or meeting a dealer who can hook you up with a rare album from the 60s.

You can read more about the event at The Brooklyn Voice: http://www.brooklynvoice.com
