Why do we love basketball? There’s plenty of sports out there, why this one? What makes this game so special?
Drama is one of the things in life that makes it worth it to stick around as long as possible. We love the suspense of what might happen next. There’s no end to the possibilities inside your own head.

All year you’re team has been playing amazing. The team’s play has been so amazing that a championship parade isn’t out of the question. It’s early, but a fan can dream, right?

The team has made it to the midway point of the season and seems to be playoff bound. You’re so hyped for the future and so you tune in to watch a seemingly meaningless game against a far inferior team with a losing record.

The game goes well for the first half. You’re team leads at the break and victory is almost certain. The boys come out and play with passion! This is a team on a mission!

Then… tragedy strikes! Out of nowhere you’re team’s best player, the team’s everything, is hurt. He’s being carried off the floor, and you can’t believe your eyes. This can’t be happening.

Your team manages to hold on and win the game, but that doesn’t matter now. The franchise is hurt, and without him this may be the last win for a very long time.

The prognosis isn’t good. It’s not career threatening, but he’ll miss the rest of the season. The space you’d picked out for that championship banner in the team’s home arena will have to remain empty.

You fear the future. The team looked so good, but it was obvious that he was the glue. He was the guy who made everyone better. It’s over now, and you know it.

Immediately, your worst fears seem to be realized. The losing streak you’d predicted is here, and it’s ugly. Teams you’d once looked down on with contempt are now picking the bones of your beloved franchise clean.

For the short time your hero was in the game, the team did pile on a lot of wins. They looked to be a top seed and were becoming serious contenders. You hope they can hold on and at least make the playoffs. It’s just a hope, but sometimes hope is all you need.

Your hope, your prayers seem to be rewarded. The team is playing well and looks to be closing in on a playoff spot. After the mass losses, a measure of success may still be able to be found.

It’s been a rough road, but the boys have made it in to the playoffs, barely. The star was injured and the team was shook to its core, but they came through to the other side. You can feel joy that the season turned into a simple disappointment and not a catastrophic failure.

They lost in the first round, but you knew they would. It wasn’t about winning the series. It was about getting to play the series. The one thing you can take solace in is, wait until next year!

Like you, I don't understand why everyone seems to detest high school. I remember a certain annoying author proclaiming in an interview something among the lines of, "High school is something you suffer through, and college is something you have fun in." This person was probably the school's single loner, or something, because I actually do like high school. It's the last time we'll get to see the peers and classmates we've grown up with. Just think; in five years, we might not see certain people's faces ever again. I have to admit that I take most of my peers for granted. I get annoyed with them; some of them, I hate. But imagine not being able to sit behind Mafia and snicker at his perfectly combed hair. Imagine not having homecoming and winter formal and the other cheesy yet memorable moments that every American high school student experiences. I'm going to miss it. That is, when I graduate.

Anyhow, I'm glad our classmates didn't change drastically. I don't know how I would have taken it. Change disturbs me, especially when it happens to everyone BUT me.

One thing that I have to confess is this: Drama is kind of fun. Of course, drama, most of the time, negatively affects somebody involved in it. But I have to say that although I'm not a drama queen or anything, it's fun gossiping, it's fun laughing at people, and it's fun having little infatuations and whatnot. Really. We're teenagers, and drama is what we do. And even if you do get negatively affected by it, it's usually not something drastic, and since there's so much other drama to attend to, people forget about it in a few months.

Anyway, I don't really want to do anything right now. The first few weeks of September is my prime procrastination time, and even though the homework's sitting on my desk, piling up, and even though I know I should be doing useful things, I'm not going to do it. I'm going to sit around on the computer, play a few games, MySpace a bit, and probably drag my ass off at the last minute.

Whatever.

I have to admit, when this series first started, I kept missing it and the episodes I did see weren't that good. But now, I have back tracked 100% and am loving series 5, and all the action that is going on at the moment, and with only 5 episodes remaining I cant wait to see how this series ends. I love watching One Tree Hill, that I am considering buy all the box sets out there of the show to watch when I want.

Even if I am working, I set my recorder (yes I still have one of those!) so I don't miss it, who would ever of thought that Dan would become a hero after rescuing Jamie, from evil Nanny Carrie. Something tells me this isn't the last we will be seeing of her.

Series 6 has just started this week in America, so I guess it will be another year before UK viewers get to see all the action. To say this is a teen drama, it is one of the best out there at the moment, well so I think so anyway.

During the day time on E4, they are showing previous seasons episode, eeeee dear all that drama going on, like that would happen in real life...

I’ve seen several television programs recently, and done a bit of reading, on the connection b

I've seen several television programs recently, and done a bit of reading, on the connection between mind and body, and also the connection between body and what we call "spirit" (for lack of a more accurate term).

Interestingly enough, much of the work I did last month at the Men's Rites of Passage program/retreat-- coordinated by Father Richard Rohr and the Center for Action and Contemplation-- bears out the truthfulness of the science I've been learning. We're not bodies that happen to have spirits, energies, or emotions. We are actually spirits that happen to have physical bodies, and our spirits (and our physical brains) are changed (grown or chipped away at) by our physical bodies and our real experiences (experiences that we put the spirit & body through, intentionally or unintentionally).

We do have some "control" over our brain and body development (through our choices, disciplines practiced, what we eat, etc.), but if one believes in an active God, then one of the main tasks for discipleship and growth is surrendering our need for control to The God Who Is There (title of a very good Francis Schaeffer theology/apologetics book that I found helpful as a young man).

For no reason in particular, other than "listening to the Holy Spirit", I picked up a DVD copy of the film What the Bleep Do We Know? and watched it last week. It was a bit weird overall, trying to draw connections between quantum physics, human physiology, psychology and spirituality. But it did stir up some interesting questions for me. It's clearly a New Age-influenced film (one of the main "speakers" is a woman said to be "channeling" a long-dead spiritual leader), but a good portion of the hard science, the quantum physics and biology, is well-established (but new and esoteric) ideas. Some (30% or more?) of the science is definitely theoretical, but as any casual student of quantum physics would be able to tell you, twenty centuries of so-called "proven fact" came into question once the ideas of quantum mechanics were seriously explored and tested.

The universe does not "owe us" any explanations, unfortunately. From a Christian perspective, maintaining an openness to the mysteries of God, to the hard, real questions that scripture or experience leave unexplained, is one of the central tasks in being of a disciple of Jesus. Jesus spoke in parables, stories and riddles partly because true scientific awareness did not exist in the first century.

As an exercise in considering these New Brain Science ideas, below are some notes I took on the most recent PBS program I saw, called "Happy for No Reason". Look them over, take what you need, see if it makes sense to you. Though I'm no big fan of the tendency of "self help" books to put the onus entirely on our weak, lazy, sinful selves, still the call remains for us to find our True Selves, root them in Christ, and continue to grow in love, happiness and productivity throughout our lives.

Happy for No Reason - book and suplemental materials

by "Transformational Expert" Marci Shimoff

Official PBS program description:

Transformational speaker Marci Shimoff on how to achieve happiness. Guests include author-life coach Martha Beck ("Steering by Starlight"); Harvard psychologist Ellen Langer; Richard Davidson (University of Wisconsin); actress Mariel Hemingway.

Is this "New Age" ? _ I don't know. Based on the hard science I've read about the brain, the program struck me as at least 70% scientifically accurate. I have no doubt some of the speakers interviewed are extrapolating philosophical or personally biased ideas from the hard science about brain and body chemistry. And certainly (other than Buddhist thought) the religiously relevant language about "soul" or "spirit" has been scrubbed from this program. It's not Christian, per se. But there's room for Christian faith and practice, especially practicing monastic-style prayer and social action, in the overall approach. So I think the program overall is helpful, accurate, and meaningful. Evidence of New Age connections: mentions Sedona, AZ (traditional "harmonic convergence" zone); Santa Fe Productions produced the show (New Mexico -another mecca for many New Age spiritual seekers); at least one of the sicentists I saw quoted was a genetics expert(?) also featured in the more questionable film What the Bleep Do We Know?

Another quoted PhD psychologist is connected with something called the Wellspring Institute. Don't know more about it, but his principles seemed pretty sound.

[Note: In doing a websearch on Wellspring, I discovered an upcoming conference of note: Neuroscience and Spiritual Practice: an "interreligious" conference at Claremont School of Theology in California. Among the speakers is Fr. Thomas Keating, who I've heard good things about.]

Positive experiences - our brain & body tend toward "teflon", i.e. the good (the grace?) "slides off" of us if not allowed to penetrate

Negative- brain operates more like "velcro": negative experiences & pain grabs much more easily onto brain's bio-chemical "hooks", unless these experiences are transformed or re-wired for usefulness

Therefore, to raise your "happiness setpoint" -learn to register the postives, move experience (esp. positive ones) from short-term memory to deeper or more permanent long-term memory, move simply from firing (chemical movement between neurons) to wiring (creating new synaptic connections that are permanent)

"firing but not wiring" - synapses are always "going off" or firing. But cognition (esp. through meditation, or higher and sustained attention) has the potential to use those firing moments to literally rewire the brain; we can re-organize bio-chemical and physical connections between neurons into new thought patterns and behaviors. You're wiring the moment into permanent memory and useful learning (hopefully of useful skills, since learning the "bad" patterns happens in much the same way, unless those experiences and patterns are transformed).

Mariel Hemingway interviewed -re: the Hemingway curse - legacy of suicide & mental illness, she had to re-teach herself. She had to learn both to listen, and to stop listening, to various internal and historical voices. Her recovery was about re-connecting with her true self, being present in the moment and rising above those internal storms that she was subject to.

Shimoff - Author of Happy for No Reason (CD, DVD, Hardcover book, course (CD-ROM or workbook?), daily booster kit, and (heart map) quick coherence coach - the PBS pledge person called the materials a "mind spa" or retreat

Regular meditation leads to physical transformation in the brain - compassion meditation increases the connections in the Insula, a sort of body map area- related to brain-body connection; stillness of meditation actually changes some of brain's motor centers (preparation to "act")

30 minutes of training a day, for two weeks, produces measurable changes in the brain AND increased compassion

connecting to purpose - richard nelson bowles (Happiness= my deep gladmess meeting the world's deep need.) ...and the "universe" cooperates with you. I have not read Rick Warren's "Purpose Driven Life", but I suspect he's working from many of the same principles, but rooted in Jesus' example and church history.

Is happiness our "default" brain position? Whether the answer is yes or no, a better connection to who we are, our essence, is always a move toward happiness. Because we are made in God's image, so knowing our True Self is to get to know God in a new way.

Shimoff's Seven Steps to Happiness (the habits of happiness)

Step 1- Take responsibility for your own happiness. (Change bad habits incrementally. Don't get stuck in cycles of blame. Related to recieving things as a victim, or as hero of your own life... a choice in how we tell ourselves and others the story of our lives.)

2- Practice forgiveness - conditions of happiness include compassion, tolerance

3- Express gratitude.

4- Don't believe everything you think.

5- Practice mindfulness and meditation. (Like physical exercise, mental/spiritual well-being requires working out the brain & biochemical/spiritual states).

6- Live a life inspired by purpose. (Do things on purpose, focus, align self with a purpose)

Step 7 - Cultivate nourishing relationships.

Metaphor: building a home. eg mind heart body soul - four corners of the house, roof=purpose, garden = people around you -correlates to the seven steps above

e.g. Masai tribe in Africa - needy from a material perspective, yet as happy as Westerners. Why?

Book- "Spiritual Evolution" - I missed the author's name, but the title alone points toward the convergence of spirituality and science in the twenty first century.

"social contagion" - transmission of idea or emotion to others, but this idea was not scientifically backed up in the video.

Shimoff suggests, when one tries out the 7 habits, get a "happiness buddy", like a workout buddy.

Happy for No Reason materials feature a PARALIMINAL CD - One of the big buzzwords in Men's Rites of Passage and in Father Rohr's books is "liminal space". It's a reference to edges, places of spiritual openness and learning, or transitional spaces. Being in liminal space makes possible being able to receive or see the sacred, even in the ordinary.

"In one scene while Marie Antoinette is getting ready, a pair of blue Converse tennis shoes are visible in the scene. Sofia Coppola has stated in interviews that the shoes were purposely put in the shot to portray Marie-Antoinette as a typical teenage girl, despite the time she lived in."

Whilst I like to think myself generally well read, I have to confess to there being some very sizeable gaps in my knowledge of literature. I am in my element talking about Dickens, Austen, Chaucer or Hardy but F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway are a different matter. To my shame I have never got around to familiarising myself with the works of "The Lost Generation" - the works of the great American writers based in Paris in the aftermath of the first world war.

The Snows of Kilimanjaro is based on a short story by Hemingway and tells the story of an American writer, who falls into a fever after being wounded and reflects on his failures both at love and in his writing. His neglected wife takes care for him as he slips into delirium, trying to keep him alive long enough for a plane to arrive to rescue them. In doing so she must listen to him talking of lost loves and prevent him from destroying himself or giving in to his sickness.

The film opens with writer Harry Street already injured, teasing us with two conflicting accounts of how he was injured. Harry argues that his skin was broken by a thorn in a bizarre twist of fate and that led to his leg becoming infected; his wife says he injured it when saving a young man who had fallen in a fast-moving river.

Screenwriter Casey Robinson establishes in this early scene each character's view of Street - Harry sees himself as unlucky and with self-pity, his wife thinks of him as heroic and capable. As the film plays out we learn more about these characters and their relationship, although it is far more interested in Harry's story than Helen's.

Feverishly Harry's mind races back to growing up in rural Michigan, breaking up with his girlfriend and running away to Europe where he encounters the striking Cynthia Green. As their romance develops, so does his writing. On a safari trip to Africa, Cynthia falls pregnant and, with their relationship at an end, Harry's life spirals into turmoil. He remembers another failed relationship before meeting Helen, mistaking her for Cynthia not once but twice.

These short flashbacks vary in interest and quality with the strongest being those centred on Harry and Cynthia, first in Africa and then Spain. Ava Gardner is superb as the playgirl who is challenged by the discovery that she is pregnant, realising that she does not want the same things from life that Harry does. In one scene she tries to tell him that their life will change, hoping that he will respond to the prospect of a new life with a family. The look on her face when he replies is heartbreaking and we know that their romance will be at an end.

Gregory Peck's easy charm as Harry perhaps feels a little out of character, yet it does help to explain why women would be interested in a man that bad-tempered and cruel. He handles the sarcastic dialogue well, though at times it seems as if the film would have been better served by someone with a more severe, cutting edge in their performance.

Susan Hayward, as his wife Helen, is anonymous for large chunks of the narrative as the script requires her to mop Harry's brow and be patient with him. Only towards the end of the picture is she really tested as an actress as Harry's sickness worsens and she is required to treat the infection on his leg herself.

The scenes between Helen and Harry take place, for the most part, on what is clearly a soundstage recreation of a camp in an African clearing. Camera movement feels restricted at points, particularly when compared with some of the often spectacular second camera crew work that was done on location in Egypt and Kenya.

Director Henry King mostly intercuts between the soundstage material and location footage, doing an acceptable job of marrying the two together although the joins are noticeable. However there is no excusing a sequence on a lake featuring some of the worst back projection I have ever witnessed. I always try to bear in mind the technical limitations of the period when looking at an older film but the poor execution of these shots ruins what ought to have been one of the most tense sequences of the picture.

His work elsewhere in the picture however is solid and he uses the camera and lighting well to signify a mood of nostalgia and then melancholy. Sound is used well to give the film a haunting, unnerving texture, the sound of animals in the distance giving the film a real sense of place.

The Snows of Kilimanjaro is not a film that has stood up particularly well to the tests of time. It is hard to overlook its bizarre mesh of stylised, staged dialogue scenes and wildlife footage shot on location or the film's often slow pacing. Yet for all its faults the film still is affecting and, at moments, moving.

I just found out Daxflame is still around. He's the Youtube kid who became famous a year or so ago for the video of him freaking out because of all the mean comments he was getting on his page.

I still don't find him interesting or funny.

What I do find interesting is that I watched his latest video for the hell of it, and realized that his voice changed, his acne was disappearing, and his face was fulling out. I never really noticed the puberty changes in my friends, because since I saw them every day at school it was too gradual for me to notice.

The Internet is letting us watch this kid grow up. It's almost sweet.

And yes, I know he's an actor. I can read encyclopedia dramatica too.

The Closer is an American police drama starring Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Deputy Chief of Police at the LAPD. Sedgwick plays Brenda Leigh Johnson, an ex-CIA interrogator. She is a southern belle and her easy going charm has surprised more than one criminal during an interrogation. She always gets the bad guys. She was put in charge of the Priority Homicide division of the LAPD.

She’s had to deal with conflict from Commander Taylor, chief of detectives, since she was promoted over him from the outside to her current position. Her team are seasoned veterans, some close to retiring like Lt Provenza, others like Sgt Gabriel just a few years into their police careers.

Her personal life wasn’t always as stable as it is right now. She’s currently engaged to an FBI Agent named Fritz Howard, who helps her from time to time on some cases. They’ve just sold Brenda’s bungalow and moved into a temporary space as they search for a new house to buy.

Brenda is a severe workaholic, to the sacrifice of her personal relationships. She tends to micro-manage her investigations and take a close look at details. She loves junk food and sweets but is currently trying to lay off them. She usually hides all types of junk food in drawers, purses, and other places. She is also known to be a “bit of a slob”, commenting that she does not often get around to housework every day in one episode, and in another, during a small argument between her and Fritz over where her mail was, Fritz comments that “if she looked at her mail daily instead of once a week, she would know where they keep it”.

The Closer is one of the best police dramas on television right now and is in its fourth season on TNT. Each summer sees 13 episodes. A feature length episode is shown over the holidays.

* * * * *

When someone related to the squad is killed, things get very emotional for a detective from Priority Homicide, who tries to find the killer. Chief Johnson has the full support of the FBI and the department and finds the culprit.

The murder was a total waste, but the chief is able to get a confession, thanks to her skills. Another great episode from this drama. I like how this show continues with their theme of corruption and power.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

* * * * *

Sanchez is working on a hog. He hears five rapid gunshots and runs toward the scene. He sees Oscar, his brother, who has been shot. Yelena is the girl who was with his brother. The paramedics are leery of the neighborhood and only jump into action when they see Sanchez' badge. He has his shirt off to staunch the bloodflow from his brother's wounds. He had a gun. It looked bad. At least, he had his badge with him. Sanchez gives a few orders to the uniforms arriving on the scene, and goes with his brother.

Oscar didn't make it and the squad is there at the hospital. Pope tells Johnson that there is no budget restriction on this case. He wants the killers found. Julio looks shell-shocked. He wants the chief to take his statement immediately. He gives her Oscar's, which is drenched in Oscar's blood. The chief tells him that he needs to take some time off and that they will pursue the case relentlessly. Provenza and Flynn remain with Sanchez.

Yelena says that she had been dating Oscar for 3 weeks. She says that a black guy in a blue car shot Oscar. Sanchez arrives at the station. He tries to get involved in the investigation. The chief tells him that he needs to distance himself from the case. Before he leaves, he tells the chief that Yelena lied to her.

Tao is losing patience. The interviews with the gang members aren't turning out any evidence. The bullet casings aren't in the system. Ricardo Ramos arrives at the station. Things get touchy and the chief hands of Ricky to Commander Taylor.

A witness named Miguel steps forth. It has been four days since they have been investigating the case without any leads. Miguel is sporting a bruise. She thinks that Sanchez hit him a few times. Miguel says that Yelena was lying. Yelena broke up with a Puppet, a member of some gang.

Puppet is part of the East Side 13. He was pulled up at a traffic light a few weeks ago with Yelena. Provenza gets into the tub. He takes out his gun. They tells them that Puppet moved. They tell him that they already told this to the other cop. At Puppet's house, they find Sanchez' bike. They hear a commotion from the inside. Sanchez was intimidating Puppet.

Johnson doesn't like the way that he is going about things. Someone at the squad tipped him on how to find Puppet. She tells him to go home and stay home. She takes his phone for his photo of Yelena. She uses his cellphone to find out who tipped him off. It's LT Tao.

She questions Puppet. She doesn't get far. Agent Mara arrives at the station, thanks to Fritzi. He's been undercover for two years. He's found the gun. The seller wasn't Puppet. Mara recognizes Juan Guzman as the seller. They found a box of .40 caliber gun casings in Guz' sock drawer. The gun that Mara brought in is the murder weapon. Guz' mother drives a blue Impala. Tao tells Johnson that he was only trying to help Sanchez. Johnson replies that she was trying to stop Sanchez from doing irreparable damage to his career. She tells him that he must be aware that Sanchez has a fiery temper. Tao is sorry. Johnson tells him to get Sanchez to sit in during the interrogation. Yelena is brought in to identify the killer. It turns out that Guz' brother killed Oscar. He tried to run away, but Sanchez caught him.

The chief tries to trick Tony by implying that Juan confessed. He tells her that his brother and him were cruising, looking for rival gang members. They didn't find any, so they decided to pick someone with a smoking hot chick. Tony tried to get the hat from Oscar to find out where he was from. The rival gang puts their signs underneath the rims of their hats. He wouldn't do so, so Tony shot him. She tells him that his brother will be as guilty as he is, because he helped him hunt for a target.

Sanchez says that Oscar died because he was wearing the hat that Sanchez gave him. Sanchez breaks down and sobs hysterically. The chief hears his grief.

Wracked with guilt and self pity his life is worthless. Redemption comes from an unlikely source. At best a supermarket ready meal type of movie. JJ

Photograph Lyrics

Ooooh, good song! I just found out that they are playing with Staind in London later this month. So lame. I bet that would be an amazing concert. Plus who wouldn’t want to say “meh, I saw Staind and Nickelback play in London.” But then, I already can truthfully say “I saw Staind play in Nottingham, and Aaron Lewis hugged me.” *Sigh* Yeah, he totally hugged me. It was the best belated birthday present ever!

So, today I’m finishing up my packing. We found out that there are two hops leaving for Fairchild, one tomorrow and one on Monday. I’m getting pretty nervous. Matt and I went to base so we could mail some things I sold on eBay. There was a minor car show in the parking lot by the coffee place and we ran into some friends there. Crystal was there doing a bake sale so I was able to chat with her and say a proper goodbye. Then Halley had to show up. It drives me nuts how selfish she is. I tried to be nice and say goodbye to her, but instead of wishing me a nice flight she had to whine because I probably won’t be back until she is leaving. That turned into a five minute run down of the trips she has planned with her husband between now and then. Hello? I’m walking away from you…I don’t care.

I tried organizing one last get-together tonight and somehow it was hijacked by Ross. What was supposed to be a small gathering to share a few drinks has now turned into a full fledged parrrtaaahy, complete with idiots I don’t get along with and people I probably don’t know. Thankfully I don’t have to be to the Pax terminal until around noon tomorrow so it’s no big deal if we stay up all night drinking. When I almost had a panic attack because my going away party had been overtaken Matt reminded me that I’m 23. A typical 23 year old would probably drink so much at their going away party that they’d still be drunk when they got on the plane. I’m happy to spend a little time with my “besties” (as Amy says) before I go. I just want Matt to have fun since this will be his last party for a while too. God, I’m going to miss him.

From Stephen Dunn

The invented person, borrowed from the real--abstracted, isolated--is the person we finally know, or feel we know. I make myself up from everything I am, or could be. For many years I was more desire than fact. When I stop becoming, that's when I worry.

Once again I find myself sitting at the end of the day asking myself weather or not it is worth my time to be a good person. If being a ruthless, self centered individual would actually suit me better and make my life easier and less painful. Or if I'm not being a giving enough being, and maybe a peace will come with being completely selfless and just putting others entirely first, much is the way of the Tao. But alas I cannot see myself ever falling in step with the way of the sheep, more the ever present and solitary shepard. Guess we all have our places and roles to play, I just wish I could get my role to work with my desires.

It's disappointing that me being a truthful person and not lying about a situation, or my feelings should cause me so much grief. *shrugs* So is life.
