Esa era una de las frases que utilicé un sinnúmero de veces en el bachillerato, cuando una profunda vocación antiimperialista y revolucionaria infundía una ardiente pasión a mi corazón, tal vez mayor que el amor con que he amado a gente alguna... sólo tal vez.

La crisis generada por la irresponsabilidad social de cientos de financistas, banqueros e inversionistas, ha hecho retumbar los cimientos económicos y políticos en que se basaba el esquema mundial hasta el día presente. Miles de millones de dólares se han invertido para contrarrestar la crisis, pero el resultado positivo aún no se observa.

Al tomar el periódico en la mañana de hoy, observé el retrato de las bolsas de valores mundiales: sus caídas en el día de ayer, sus caídas en esta semana, y sus caídas desde enero 1 de este año 2008. La situación hace pensar a cualquiera. Nuevas cosas se acercan, y es mejor prepararse para ello desde ya.

Owszem, była ciekawsza od kordiana, czy wallenroda, ba, zachaczała nawet o prywatne życie bohatera, jego losach, świetnie i elegancko opisanych - 'Przedwiośnie' Żeromskiego jest do przełknięcia, tematyka już nieco bardziej znana, bliższa, i pewniejsza, tak się intelektualnie zbiegło, że na historii mamy dokładnie to samo, o czym jest mowa w książce - rewolucja w rosji, problemy kształtowania się nowej, niepodległej Polski, wprowadzania nowych idei i reform, poszukiwanie ich, etc, etc... kto czytał, ten wie, a kto nie, ten ma głęboko i szeroko.

Jakiś tydzień temu, może więcej, była u mnie pani Jadwiga, wydaje mi się, że pisałem już o niej, polka, mówiąca po niemiecku, mąż niemiec, 3-letnia córka będzie miała w przyszłości fajnie. Otóż kupiła sobie już jakiś czas temu laptopa z Vistą (kurczę, jestem prawie pewien, że o tym pisałem!), a ostatnio kupiła starter BlueConnecta w Erze, bez modemu, pan w salonie powiedział, że jeśli ma telefon w erze (a ma trzy, dwie motorole i samsunga), to nie będzie problemu z Internetem przez telefon, używając kabla USB. Oczywiście ona, jako osoba już starsza (45+) o internecie pojęcia nie ma żadnego. Przyjechała więc do mnie, żebym jej to zrobił tak, żeby Internet działał, i mogła w końcu zapisać się do swojej klasy, na naszej-klasie.

Miał jej to zrobić jakiś tam syn sąsiadki, ale powiedział jej, że wystarczy telefon skonfigurować, podpiąć pod kabel, i będzie działał. Wymigał się dosyć nieelegancko, szczerze mówiąc.

Po pierwsze - laptop z NIEMIECKĄ Vistą (wybrała ten język przy instalacji, bo jej mąż mówi tylko po niemiecku), telefony - jedna motorola RAZR V3, druga MOTOKRZR, na samsunga nawet nie patrzyłem, nie miałem kabli. Po drugie - wszystkie telefony także po niemiecku, a znalezienie opcji zmiany języka w obcym (nie miałem motoroli nigdy, i nigdy mieć nie chcę), nowym telefonie nie jest łatwa. Ale, jak to mówią, trening czyni mistrza, w końcu znalazłem w gdzieśtam schowanych opcjach zmianę języka, ustawiłem angielski - ludzie, ulga, już wiem, gdzie są ustawienia sieci!

Instalacja szła mozolnie - najpierw Vista nie rozpoznawała telefonów, potem RAZR jakoś się zainstalował, ba, komputer połączył się z telefonem nawet przez taki śmieszny program, z GUI wyglądającym jak modelu telefonu, który jest podłączony, wyjątki w zaporze porobione, wszystko po niemiecku - ja nie wiem, co do mnie komputer mówi! Ale brniemy dalej, dobrze, że program miał polską wersję możliwą do zainstalowania..

Do skonfigurowania pozostał tylko telefon, źle ustawiony WAP, kobieta nigdy z internetu przez komórkę nie korzystała, jakiś mms od czasu do czasu, a i to nie pewne. Wchodzę na stronę Ery, gdzie znajduje się Zdalny Konfigurator Telefonu. Wchodzę, myślę sobie o chwale i zwycięstwie nad ErąInternet - ale ta znów mnie pokonała. Szczegóły w screenie po prawej..

Pomyslałem sobie - spróbujemy mimo to! Kiedy już wszystko zostało podłączone, wszystkie połączenia poutwarzane, telefon przygotowany, i gotowy do łączenia się ze światem - Internet się jednak nie pojawiał. Z komunikatów domysliłem się, że problem jednak tkwi w telefonie - po męczerniach z podłączaniem, resetowania komputera, etc, postanowiłem zadzwonić na infolinię blueconnecta. Dowiedziałem się, że nie powinno być problemów z połączeniem, widzi aktywną usługę blueconnecta, oraz chwilową awarię zdalnego konfiguratora - po chwili sam wysłał smsa z konfiguracją.

Kolejny restart, podłączenie telefonu, w końcu - DZIAŁA! Radość pani Jadwigi jest nie do opisania, aż wyszedłem z nią na papierosa, 'cygaro' zwycięstwa, poczęstowawszy mnie zielonym Cristalem opowiadała, żę przyjedzie jeszcze, żebym pomógł założyć jej konto na naszej-klasie. Czekam z niecierpliwością.

Potem został tylko nowiutki MS Office Student 2007 do zainstalowania - wiecie, że ja pierwszy raz miałem w ręce oryginalnego Office'a? Nie raz i nie dwa już korzystałem z wersji 2007, jednak zobaczyć tego futurystycznego boxa, w środku kawałek ulotki i brzydką płytę z pakietem programów - za to śmieszne pudełko mąż Pani Jadwigi dał.. 99 euro. Paranoja, nigdy w życiu tyle za to nie zapłacę.

Pojechała do domu, uszczęśliwiona, z laptopem w eleganckiej skórzanej, nowej torbie, do domu, mijała 21:30. Pamiętam, że następnego dnia nie poszedłem do szkoły, z powodu mojego nieprzygotowania do sprawdzianów z fizyki czy angielskiego..

Fakt faktem, nauczyłem się wielu rzeczy, wiem, jak jest po niemiecku 'panel sterowania', dowiedziałem się, że tłumaczenie Visty nawet na użytkowniku mówiącym baaardzo biegle po niemiecku, Vista przetłumaczona jest tragicznie - jeden przykład, głupie polskie 'Wyłącz' przetłumaczono z angielskiego na niemiecki na coś w stylu 'wyjeżdżanie', niektóre komunikaty są w ogóle nie zrozumiałe.

Co też mnie w nowej Viście drażni - kobieta wkłada płytę z bajką, którą chce włączyć dla dziecka - a tam pokazuje się komunikat pytający, co chce zrobić - czy uruchomić plik .exe, czy otworzyć folder - paranoja totalna, autorun na płycie jest jasno skonfigurowany, nawet na moim ubuntu .exe z bajkami włączają się same, a na głupiej Viscie zadaje jakieś niestworzone pytania, sprawiając, że nowy użytkownik naprawdę nie może się połapać.

Na CentrumXP czytałem ostatnio o wersji beta, czy alpha systemu Windows 7 - systemu, który miał być modułowy, niewielki, nowatorski, świeży, napisany od nowa - a co zobaczyłem? VISTĘ, z innymi napisami, które początkujący photoshopiarz, na wersji 30dniowej mógłby zrobić w kilkanaście minut. Można, oczywiście, inaczej wyrazić swoją dezaprobatę i rozczarowanie - jednak ŻAL pasuje mi tu znakomicie.

To na razie tyle, idę rozwiązywać zadania domowe, które nam dowalili - wydaje mi się, że ich wszystkich, jakoś zbiorowo, po prostu coś piecze.

"My inclination is to support it, because I think Main Street is now at stake," he told Face The Nation host Bob Schieffer. He added, though, "I'm not happy about it."

"This [crisis] could affect every sector of the economy. If the credit crisis continues or worsens, then suddenly small business people can't make their payroll. You have large businesses who can't sell corporate debt, which could bring the entire economy to a grinding halt."

Obama was pleased that, at first reports, his basic goals for the package were included: "The issue of making sure that we had strong oversight; the insistence that taxpayers share in the gains (if there are any) when the market recovers; the insistence that homeowners get additional relief so that there's some reciprocity - if in fact we're bailing out or helping banks, they in turn have to help rework mortgages for people who are potentially facing foreclosure; and the final thing, the issue of executive compensation, making sure that taxpayer money is not going to pad bonuses or golden parachutes.

"It appears that those principles have all been incorporated into the core agreement. And I'm going to be reviewing the language over the next day to make sure that those provisions actually stick."

But beyond the bailout (which has reportedly been agreed to by Congressional leaders), Obama focused on how the U.S. economy came to the point of a president sounding the alarm that a catastrophe was in the offing if drastic action wasn't taken immediately. "We have to remember how we got here, not so much to allocate blame as to understand the choices that are going to face the next president. Unless we update our 20th century regulatory framework for a 21st century global financial system, then we're going to continue to be vulnerable to this kind of situation, and I think the next president has to come in with a very strong package of reforms."

Obama said fighting off lobbyists and special interests was key, as is recognizing that the fundamentals of our economy are not strong - which he suggested his opponent, Republican John McCain, has not recognized.

"Some of the root causes of this crisis have to do with the day-to-day struggles that ordinary people are going through," he said, "with flat wages and incomes but constantly increasing costs.

That puts pressure on them to take out more debt, to use home equity loans, to try to refinance. It created an environment in which this kind of crisis potentially could occur.

"We should have never gotten into this place in the first place. And I think this is a final verdict on eight years of failed economic policy."

Obama noted that the dire predictions of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke and President Bush set the stage for a week of high drama that, he said, shouldn't have ever happened. "Think about it. I mean, we had the largest bank failure in our history, and it wasn't even the major news that day!"

"You agree with the president's assessment that it's as serious as he said it was?" Schieffer asked.

"I agree that this is probably the most serious financial crisis we've faced since the Great Depression," Obama said. "And what we can't do is do nothing. What I absolutely insist on, though, is that the same sense of urgency that we have about Wall Street, we have about folks on Main Street who have been struggling for a long time."

Obama said more serious regulations are required. "We have to set up some rules of the road, some regulations that work to keep the system solvent, and prevent Wall Street from taking enormous risks with other people's money, figuring that, 'Tails I win, heads you lose,' where they don't have any risk on the downside.

"But the second thing that we have to learn is that, if you think about how this all started, subprime lending, you've got homeowners who ultimately could not make payments on their homes, and that's an indication of the degree to which family budgets have been under huge stress for years now, and we haven't been paying much attention about it because the theory has been, 'Well, as long as those at the top are doing well, prosperity somehow is going to trickle down.'"

In response to Thursday's meeting at the White House, attended by both Obama and McCain, at which the tentative brokered agreement was upset by House Republicans, prompting further tense negotiations, Schieffer asked Obama if McCain should get any credit for helping to get the bailout package settled.

"No," Obama said. "Look, here are the facts: For two weeks, I was on the phone every day with Secretary Paulson and the congressional leaders, making sure that the principles that have ultimately been adopted were incorporated into the bill. None [of the amendments in the package] were in the president's provision. They are identical to the things I called for the day that Secretary Paulson released his package. That, I think, is an indication of the degree to which, when it comes to protecting taxpayers, I was pushing very hard and involved in shaping those provisions.

"But understand this: The important thing here is making sure that we don't have a photo op session, because this is serious. We should not have been here in the first place. And, you know, I think the critical debate that we're going to have to have between myself and Senator McCain moving forward is, how do we prevent this kind of thing from happening again?"

In addition to the bailout, Obama discussed Friday's debate, where McCain accused Obama of "not understanding" something.

"The interesting thing is, he kept on asserting I didn't understand, but beyond saying the line never indicated what exactly I didn't understand. It's true I don't understand Senator McCain's positions on a whole host of issues, because given how the Bush administration has created an extraordinary crisis in the economy and considering that we remain bogged down in Iraq, al Qaeda is resurgent, Iran is developing nuclear weapons, that our foreign policy is if not in a shambles, then certainly in a place that I think anybody is comfortable with - given those facts, what I don't understand is that Senator McCain continues to promote them."

Un gruppo di ricercatori canadesi avrebbe scoperto una macchina in grado di  catturare l'anidride carbonica ovunque sul pianeta. Buchi neri, scoperto l'anello mancante

E' stato identificato un forte impulso a raggi X emesso da un buco nero gigante in una galassia lontana 500 mln di anni luce. La scoperta e' dell'universita' di Durham e porta luce su quello che i ricercatori considerano un anello mancante nella famiglia dei buchi neri. Gli impulsi a raggi X, scoperti nel buco nero gigante, sono infatti caratteristici di quelli molto piu' piccoli. Gli esperti hanno chiamato 'virus della mischia', una forma di herpes che contagia tramite il contatto fisico. La nuova forma del virus descritta sul Journal of General Virology, che e' una patologia diffusa tra i giocatori di rugby e i lottatori di sumo, si trasmette attraverso il contatto della pelle. Ketty Lester took this 1945 Dick Haynes standard pop hit and transformed it into a classic. And that piano playing is simply awesome. I loved this song from the very first time I heard it and whenever I watched Ketty playing Hester-Sue on "Little House" (yes I watched it and I watched "The Waltons" too -- so there) it boggled my mind to try to understand what happened that made her turn from music to acting.

Lester, born Revoyda Frierson in Arkansas, began singing professionally as soon as she completed a San Francisco State College music course where she was studying Nursing on Scholarship. She played the "Purple Onion" club, toured Europe and joined Cab Calloway's Revue  (WHEW) before having what was to be her biggest musical hit with "Love Letters"

Composed by Edward Heyman and Victor Young, Lester took the song to #2 BIllboard R&B Singles, #5 Billboard Pop Singles, and #5 UK, while the LP of the same name charted only #54 Billboard Pop Albums. After a few more LPs Lester concentrated on her acting and has had quite a long and successful career at it. She also appeared in the 1964 revival of "Cabin in the Sky."

This post is a bit later in the day than usual since I had been in bed with food poisoning for the past two days. Typically my Wednesday posts are prepared on Tuesday night, but today was my first day up and about and back to work and I just prepared this when I got home from work Wednesday evening.

Imagine the scenario if you can, you are a Media Studies teacher. You wish to use some movie trailers in a classroom session, so that the learners can analyse the content and structure of the trailers and compare the features and similarities between each one.

Now you could use a computer suite and each learner could access the relevant movie site and view the trailer online. However this doesn't really help as the video plays once and sometimes you want to see part of the trailer again and again. Now if only the learners could download the trailer, or even better could the teacher download the trailers and make them available to all the learners via a local network server, so enabling fast and easy access.

Well technically this is possible, however is it legal?

There are many tools available online which allow you to download videos from sites such as YouTube (usually through a Firefox extension or similar). They basically "scrape" the code for the video link from the website and then download the video file, providing you with a Flash based FLV file, some tools will convert this on the fly into an AVI or WMV if required.

However this article makes for interesting reading on the legality of doing this.The website in question (which is quite a respected tech blog) had given instructions on how to use video downloading tools to download streaming video from a site such as YouTube.

From the article YouTube states quite clearly that:

Currently, YouTube is a streaming-only service. We do not permit users to download the videos we host on our site. We believe our Terms of Use are clear on this point, but in light of the confusion which came to our attention today we are considering revisions to our Terms of Use to avoid any further confusion. It is important to many of our users who have uploaded and licensed content to YouTube that their content is authorized for streaming-only.

If a site streams a video to you, generally you don't have the right to download that video as they are only making the video available as a stream.

Media-Convert.com which I have mentioned before, use to do this via it's web based video conversion service, enter the YouTube URL and before you could say "is this legal" you would have a video in the format of your choice. They were soon stopped from doing this.

So downloading a streamed Flash based video is not an option, what about Quicktime based trailers from the Apple website?

For personal use, I can use Quicktime Pro on a Mac (and on Windows as well). What Quicktime Pro allows you to do is to save a Quicktime video to your hard drive. Once the trailer has loaded onto my computer in the browser I can save a copy to my hard disk for later viewing. I can even download the 1080p HD versions which look very nice even if they don't fit on my computer screen as it's too BIG.

Quicktime Pro is not the free video viewer but the paid for upgrade, which is about £12 per license for educational users (it's £20 for "normal" individuals). There are other things you can do with it as well, I use it for making video and audio recordings on my Mac for example. I have also used it to trim audio recordings and some of the export functionality does make life easier...

Note the term "personal use", most film trailers online are only available for personal use only. I would be surprised by any movie site which would allow a teacher to download movies for use in the classroom.

Apple in their terms of use for example make it quite clear what you can and can not do with any trailer you download from their website:

...no Content may be copied, reproduced, republished, uploaded, posted, publicly displayed, encoded, translated, transmitted or distributed in any way (including “mirroring”) to any other computer, server, Web site or other medium for publication or distribution or for any commercial enterprise, without Apple’s express prior written consent.

This would mean downloading and distributing it to students in a classroom situation would be viewed as illegal unless you had the permission of the movie trailer copyright owner.

Similar guidance is available on most other movie sites I checked. For example on Warner Brothers website is says:

You may access and display Material and all other content displayed on this Site for non-commercial, personal, entertainment use on a single computer only. The Material and all other content on this Site may not otherwise be copied, reproduced, republished, uploaded, posted, transmitted, distributed or used in any way unless specifically authorized by WB Online.

You could write and ask for authorisation and permission, sometimes this may be given, more often than not it won't.

Legally students could download their own individual copy for their own analysis. However this may not always be possible, especially if you have network congestion or a slow internet connection.

So is there a solution, well yes, if you go for an alternative solution which is forgot online and go back to broadcasting.

Now an easier way would be to digitally record the trailers from the TV and use digital copies of them. You won't even need an ERA licence, as the ERA does not cover adverts from the TV. Though if the trailers are part of say a film programme then these programmes probably are covered by the ERA licensing scheme and appropriate action should be taken accordingly.

However if it is an advert, under the Copyright Act you have a statutory right (therefore can not be taken away from you) to show recordings of TV broadcasts for educational purposes.

Are there broadcasts I can't record under the ERA Licence?

Yes, only broadcast material owned or represented by ERA Members is licensed through the ERA Scheme for off-air recording. This means that some contents of certain broadcasts and material included in them, such as advertisements, are not covered by the Licence because ERA Members do not own or control the rights in them.

However, if you record these broadcasts for non-commercial educational purposes, your recordings in the ways relevant to the ERA Licence will not infringe copyright, unless a certified Section 35 licence applies. This is because Section 35 (1) states that where works are not covered by a certified scheme, then educational establishments may reproduce and communicate them electronically on-site without infringing copyright. You will need to adequately acknowledge, i.e. label, any broadcast recordings you make under Section 35 (1).

Also worth look at the ERA restrictions as well.

I have made recording just like this using an EyeTV device on a Mac (I have also used a Windows Media Centre as well, but never again...) I just set the video to record for a few hours (takes GB of space mind you) and then go through the adverts until I find the one I want (or one that's similar). For movie trailers I would recommend recording the adverts during film programes on ITV or Channel 4, or during films.

If you do have an ERA licence then recording film programmes will help, as some of these will have trailers in them.

My Elgato EyeTV device captures from Freeview so I get a really good quality digital video file, it's roughly the same quality as DVD. The editing tools make life really easy well to trim and edit the video you need. There are Windows TV Capture devices, some of them are just small USB sticks which slot into any USB port.

Though there are legal barriers that are getting in the way of the learning here, there are also solutions as well.

Don't get me wrong: complete games are overrated to some degree and we shouldn't measure CC's ultimate value in terms of them alone. It's an impressive feat when a pitcher does it - it means that he was judged better than any available reliever for nine straight innings - but it isn't always smart for a manager to allow it to happen. More innings = lower chance of continued success. So the fact that CC was able to throw more complete games than any other team in the NL says something about him, but it also says something about the (very low) quality of the Brewers bullpen. Other pitchers are great, but never get the chance to throw complete games because they play for teams with excellent bullpens and their managers judge that the pitchers will be worth more with fewer innings accumulated. Maybe Brandon Webb or Dan Haren (who threw 3 and 1 complete games, respectively) are just as good, or better, than CC, but haven't needed to throw CGs because the D-Backs have a respectable bullpen. Tim Lincecum gets a lot of attention w/r/t Cy Young talk. He threw 2 complete games. And the Giants don't even have a particularly good bullpen (or a good offense, which means that a lot of the games he's pitching in are close, and so he's needed badly). The same goes for Santana: he threw 3 CGs all season, and the Mets have perhaps the only bullpen in the league worse than the Brewers'.

So: CC pitched 7 CGs in 17 starts, while four other Cy Young contenders threw 9 in a combined 134 starts. That should give you some sense of the magnitude of the accomplishment Even if CC was badly needed to throw complete games because of the Brewers crappy bullpen, the mere fact that he was able to do it says a lot about how good he is. Moreover, the fact that he was in a position to do it - that is, that he never got off to a bad start and so needed to be pulled early on - says even more. (3 of CC's complete games with the Brewers were shutouts.)

Add to to this an ERA of 1.65 while with the Brewers and a K/BB ratio of better than 5:1 and you realize that CC wasn't left on the mound so often just because the bullpen is so bad. He was left on the mound because he's so good - better, I might add, even than most of the rest of the pitchers around for whom complete games are even a real possibility. If you're worried that CCs ERA is too low to be real - that it's the product of a streak of good luck - consider that his FIP (a number on the same scale as ERA, but that factors out the contribution of defense) while with the Brewers is 2.51. That means that, though he was helped by his defense, his ERA while with the Brewers is still lower than any other NL starter's ERA this year. Stringing together a run of 17 starts in a row that are this good is all but unheard of - even among the very best pitchers in baseball.

For the sake of comparison, since July 3rd, CC Sabathia has started 17 games and has thrown 16 quality starts (= 6.0+ IP and 3 or fewer earned runs). Brandon Webb has started 17 games; 12 of them were QS. Dan Haren has started 16 games; 10 of them were QS. Tim Lincecum has started 17 games; 12 of them were QS. The only pitcher in the National League who comes close is Johan Santana, who started 17 games, 15 of which were QS. The Brewers are in the playoffs; the Mets aren't.

None of the other Cy Young candidates come close to CCs numbers in the second half of the season - the part of the season, presumably, that matters the most and in which a pitcher's durability is most tested.

Pundits spend a lot of time debating exactly what the postseason awards ought to take into consideration and what they ought to reward. I can understand arguments that might rule out players who switch leagues in the middle of the season. And it's true that CC wasn't with his team for the entire season. But I suspect that had any of the other pitchers considered above put together a season with a relatively mediocre first half (CCs numbers with the Indians aren't great, though they're still pretty good) and then a run like his in the second half, he would win the Cy Young. CC has had three months better than entire seasons had by very good pitchers. And his second half was so much better - laughably better - than any other pitcher's. It's hard to imagine a pitcher more valuable to his team.

Funny how when the real estate market has been sucking air, Wallstreet was packaging all the bad mortgages and selling them off. Now Wallstreet wants the common American tax payer to "bail the out" of this jam. Everyone is pointing fingers. Obama is blaming McCain and McCain is blaming Obama. I ran across an interesting video clip today that helped me see through this mess. See it here :

In 2004, it was brought to the attention of our congressional leaders and you can see the reaction in the video. In 2005, if I had walked into one of those Wallstreet Banks, they would have called security and had me removed from the building! When everyday Joe got into trouble with a mortgage they no longer could afford, Wallstreet could give a hoot! GREED as Gordon Gekko used to say! It won Michael Douglass and Academy Award, but in 2008 it is for real.

I’m certainly not an expert in what is going on. I certainly have had and like most of America am having a rough time with the real estate market. But what I do know is that those big banks went into this mess thinking they were going to make a killing. They wanted those restrictions lifted so they could loan more and more money. GREED. Now they lost money and need to be bailed out! What about the everyday American. How is this going to trickle down and help Average Joe?

I do know that banks are not lending! That is causing a real estate (and an everything) meltdown. But I will bet you this: WHEN those lenders get bailed out by the government / U.S. Tax payer, they will not be quick to loan money again. Why? GREED. The fix only works if money is bled back out into the streets. If Wallstreet is not willing to loan money on Main street, the bailout will fail. Gordon Gekko would have made a killing!
