Happy late 4th of July, everybody in America!

Happy late 4th of July, everybody in America!

I'm going to combine Friday & Saturday, because this tip applied to both days. Heck, it even applied to Thursday. Guess thats part of my teen years, trying new stuff...don't worry, it doesn't include bad stuff!

TIP #4 - TRY SOMETHING NEW!

Cool, I even tried a new color too - purple. I'm not a huge fan of purple but it looks alright haha. Okay, lets see. For my July 4th, I decided to hang out in my pool and watch gigantic fireworks, courtest of my friend 2 houses down. And the view was seriously breathtaking. I've seen plenty of fireworks just like the rest of us but this actually caught my attention big time. Because I'm in Florida, my family is all, AH don't go in the backyard at night, there's mosquitoes! Whatcha gonna do? That's why you got citronella candles & Benadryl. It was worth it & amazingly, I never did that in my fifteen years of life :P

Also something new: ICE-SKATING! Saturday, my sister invited me to ice-skating with her friends. First I was reluctant, not because I'm hanging out with her friends (7-8 years older than me) because we've all done that before, but because I knew I am such a clutz and would not pick up ice-skating at all. But I went, because I knew my sister was scared just like me, and atleast now I can say I WENT ICE-SKATING, in Florida, during my summer! I fell once and brought down my sis and her friend (that's what you get for helping haha). And I spent my entire time dragging myself along the sides! No lie! I kind of regret not letting go and falling that second, or third, or fourth time but hey I'm still alive and not hurting :) And the ice-rink will always be there. I'm not fond of my memory of getting screamed at to get off the rink because the Zamboni was coming out! Uhhh....I can slide around the sides that easy & I was so desperate I felt like crying and just crawling over to the exit. I would've too...

So all in all, try something new. Even if you fail horribly, like I did with Ice-Skating, you can still say you did it. It's one more thing you can add to your life achievements :)

- Saab.

I heard the first locusts two days ago. I saw lightening bugs a month ago. The air is coolish. I'm thinking of football and the bite of frost. I don't want to hurry things along, but hell yes I do. Wake me in September. That's when I'll clean my house. Wipe off sticky rings of soda pop from my coffee tables, throw away the thousands of potato chip bags, sunflower seeds and bread crusts. I'll make time to match the socks and make the beds and wash every dish. I'll clean out the leftovers and paint the bathroom. I might be able to face sweeping out the garage and organizing the un-used toy room. It's a possibility I might be able to gather all the old clothes up and take them to the thrift shop in tidy piles neatly marked Large, X Large and Big Assed Big.

"8:03. Shit, I'm going to be late again!" - First thought Monday morning. And pretty much for the rest of the week.

"8:06! Damnit." - Walk in hold head down and try to avoid eye contact with CEO. He sees me. Shit. Walk faster.

"Good morning Natasha" He made a point to let me know he knows that I wasn't here before 8.

"Good morning Mr. X, how are you?" In my usual chipper voice. This is how you win him over. Smile. Laugh and show some ambition. Done and done.

I take a seat infront of my two overbearing old school monitors and plug away for the day.

He once sent me a Dilbert comic that indicated having two monitors should mean twice as much productivity. Refrain self from writing back indicating that he's having me do 3 peoples jobs because he fired one and two quit, and that he's too cheap to give me a raise. Reply "ha ha ha". Delete. Asshole.

12:30, I have to run. "Boss lady," (also dear friend) "I have an interview, gotta jet." Typical Vancouver weather means that it's dumping down with rain. I have no umbrella. I wore my hair curly today. Fucking frizz.

Screw the rain, I am jumping in a cab. After 15 mins it should be here by now....hail next available taxi. Have a nice little chat with the driver who procedes to tell me that I will definitely get the job. He thought I was going for an interview at the restaurant beside the office. I thank him for the encouragement and tell him if he ever comes in, I'll get him a drink on me. Deep down I know this will never happen, either because a) he will never show or b) because I will never be working there. Although, never say never.

I have often thought about the money that could be made on the corner of Helmecken and Richards. I don't own white boots, I wouldn't stand a chance.

Get to the office, open the door. "Mr. Y?" I softly say.

"Yes, hey. How's it going? Have you had lunch yet?" He asks. What? The CEO is going to take me for lunch for my interview? We rarely got coffee at ABC.

"Umm, no" I was too nervous to eat before.

"Okay, let's go grab sushi and we'll get Mr. Z to meet us there."

Sushi, one of the worst things to eat when on either a date or with someone you don't know well. There is no grace in shoving an entire roll of rice, fish and seaweed into your mouth. Not to mention when you put too much wasabi on and your eyes start to water and you want to swat the burning sensation out of your face.

Lunch is over. Time for deliberation. I have a good feeling about this one. We venture back out into the rain, Mr. Z hops into his car and Mr. Y and I trudge back to the office. We make small talk. Keep things light. Island living. Delightful. Island kids getting into hard drugs, a hippy's dream becomes unforseen. The white little man indicates it's our turn to drive our feet across the slick pavement. Right. Left. Right. Left. Right shoe slips. Left leg lunges. Hands slap on pavement and I pick myself back up.

"Uh uh, are you okay?" Mr. Y awkwardly asked.

"Ya, ya. I'm fine." I said, but really I was thinking 'I can't believe I fell in the middle of an intersection with cars all around me, infront of my new potential CEO. I just lost the job."

We part ways. He says he'll call. Much like every other guy that says it to please you for the moment so they can get out of the current situation they're in with much more ease.

I realize how much I'm bleeding when I hop onto the Aquabus. So much so that the driver comments on the blood trailing down my leg. At least I shaved to today. I think that's how I got the job.

The farmers say this one is a "family favorite", and it's now one of ours, too. It was a fantastic way to use the mountains of kale we received last summer -- we froze a lot of it and had CSA soup all winter long.

The "throw everything in a pot and cook until done" recipe -- my favorite kind! -- can be easily adapted to use whatever vegetables you have on hand. We made a very nice variation with a little tomato paste added to the broth, as well as one with some curry spices.

Ingredients:
* cannellini (white) beans
* kale (LOTS)
* vegetable or chicken stock
* olive oil
* bay leaf
* onion
* garlic
* carrots
* diced tomatoes

Recipe from Golden Earthworm:

Romans 14:21
It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.

My friend Ehart recently asked some interesting questions because we were discussing what lengths one should go to in order to "not cause someone to stumble."

1. If you have alcoholic beveriges in your home because you either (a) do not personally sin in drinking or (b) take a little wine with dinner for your heart or (c) have a swallow of whiskey to soothe a coughing fit, would you be caring or dishonest in putting it away if you had someone coming over who considered alcohol a "mortal" sin?
It would be "caring" if my guest was a recovering alcoholic who couldn't stand the temptation of seeing it on my counter. (Although this still depends on the person - my grandfather has been sober for almost 20 years and seeing other people drink doesn't phase him.) I think that it would be dishonest to change my lifestyle or hide my own convictions just because someone disagreed with me.

2. If you smoke, are you being considerate or dishonest in leaving your cigarettes in the car or at least out of sight when you are around non-smokers or at church?
It's considerate if the other people are allergic to smoke, otherwise it's probably dishonest. If you're going to smoke, you should never lie about it. If someone isn't willing to be your friend because you choose to smoke, then they aren't really your friend at all.

3. If you wear both knee-lenth skirts and ankle-length skirts are you being caring or dishonest if your friend who only wears ankle-length is coming over?
I'm kinda' torn on this one. I don't think it would be a big deal to put on a longer skirt if we had planned the get-together in advance, but I also don't think I should have to conform to what someone else thinks is right or wrong. I feel like that's being dishonest with myself and my own beliefs, and sacrificing my own convictions to appease someone else.

4. If you wear shorts in the summer, are you being considerate or dishonest if you change quickly if you see a friend pull up in the driveway who doesn't approve of shorts.
Dishonest.

5. If you wear slacks or jeans (ladies) and you have a friend who is dresses only, are you being caring or dishonest by only wearing a skirt when she is around?
If I'm doing it just to please her, that's dishonest because I'm portraying myself as something that I'm not.

6. If you have a friend who believes that to not cover your hair is a blatant sin, should you wear a hat or other covering if the two of you are going out together?
No. I have several Mennonite friends (EHart - I don't know if you remember when I worked at the Kress, but one of the cooks was Mennonite and we actually spent a lot of time together. I even went caroling with her church and attended a service, but did not cover my head and she, in fact, told me not to because I didn't usually do that) and this has never been an issue in our friendship.

7. If you have a friend who doesn't believe a woman should show her elbows in public, would you put on a jacket even in the summertime (90 or above) to keep from offending?
No. I get heat exhaustion very easily and I would rather be healthy and not pass out than be overheated. I know many women claim they can dress from head to toe in the heat and not be hot, but it's tank tops for me.

The last question is probably the most interesting to me because I think I've only worn jackets or long sleeved shirts a handful of times over the past 3 years that I've lived in Hawai'i. I've also not met any women who live here who believe one should "always keep elbows covered" so I wonder if that's an idealistic "mainland thing" that women from cold climates come up with. Even the most "modest" of women and the most "reserved" women I know who are Christians dress appropriately when it's hot out. If I were to walk outside in 90+ degree weather in a jacket, I would probably get beslapped for silliness and setting myself up to overheat. I also think it's funny to note that the most modest, reserved girl I know here (who actually yelled at me for asking if she had kissed her date -- she said she didn't want to give her heart away so "of course" she didn't kiss him) wears bikinis to the beach.

I still don’t have an opinion about it, but Otaking has one: the world of fansubs has fallen.

I still don't have an opinion about it, but Otaking has one: the world of fansubs has fallen. And to prove his theory, he made a 30 minute video that took half a year to be ready.

Otaking says that in the past, fansubs were way better, and that the amateurs fansubbers are destroying the fansubbing community.

He start the video explaining how animes were subbed in the past, around 1990.

Wow! I was 6 in 1990! Already a fan of sentais, like Jaspion and others that were showing on TV (I don't even remember the channel, but I bet that my mom does), but at that age, I didn't even knew that such thing as fansubs existed, I hardly knew how to read!! So, I have no memory of that time.

It's a good video. Everyone should watch it and think about it. Specially the ancient otakus (j/k)! via Japanator

Então, não me lembro dessa época.

If there's one thing I hate more than bugs, it's bug bites. Every time I wake up, I get a new one. On my leg, my neck, arm, I've got them everywhere. It must be the heat, proving once again, that there is very little good that comes from summer. I mean, honestly, how many people would enjoy Summer if they had school for the entire three months? Winter is my preference. Winters in California are much more comfortable, the clothes are better, and I still get a break from school. Not much to dislike there.

I would actually take Spring and Fall before Winter, now that I think about it. But maybe I'm just too annoyed to make proper judgment.

Here's an awesome website for the day.

KRIMI-FASZIT:
