It's the oldest principle. But hey! It's atomic power, it's modern.

Atomic power is a centralized energy - destroy the center - no energy.
That's the same with the Fusion reactor in ITER / France (Funded with
10,000,000,000 EUROs of money - 100,000,000,000 EUROs of money till
2050 in the E.U.). But credit the money, if you are clever you also
have your hands in Fusion not only atomic power.

The atomic industrys servant IEA / IAEA says atomic power will go
back in the year 2030. Who wonders? My money wonders.
Uranium will end in 60 years and be more expensive. More money.
Renew Uranium? That's even more expensive and causes huge
amounts of radiative waste. But it's more money.

Remember - there is no radioactive waste disposal on the world,
even for the 1st Generation waste directly from atomic power plants.
That costs too much money.

In the past money was worth much more, now money loses it's value.
Attention, it's clever! With less valuable money it's harder to
build new energy like environmental friendly / renewable energy.

So, let's wait and wait and wait - it will become nearly impossible.
People think: Renewable energy is too expensive and ineffective.
But wait, instead we have atomic power from the past with the good
old frameworks - as the subsidies. Let's bet on this, let's sell
it during G8.

Who cares for the future, when your country has hundreds of atomic power
plants - which need to be demolished - this costs more than the construction and takes
a longer time (10 years).

And with all these massive problems - who cares about a missing radioactive waste disposal.
or problems after all. Or the German KiKK Study about higher cancer risc near atomic power plants.
Guess what, let's build more atomic power plants - so everyone lives next to one. The study will

It started with an unique experience. Friday, for the Fourth of July, I planned to meet some Americans down at Cite Universitaire. We all met up, made some hotdogs, drank some beer, and had some good times. I was told that after the hotdogs, we were going to a party that the Canadians were throwing for us. Not so.

As it turns out, the party planned was a French one and the Americans were invited on somewhat of a whim (friends of friends). My sole contact there, citing an 8 am train ride, decided not to go. I was left with the choice: go to this random party with a group of Italians, Canadians, and one American I just met, or go home. Of course, it was party time.

We arrived at the venue fairly late, around 11 or so, after a nice long train ride of discussing future energy options with two Canadians (they found out I was a Nuclear Engineer -- good times). I was surprised to find out two unique things about this party: that the place was basically a two roomed, vaulted ceiling, French catacombs with antechamber, and that it was a BYOB gig with a then open bar (you sacrificed what you brought for the greater good -- think "Stone Soup" if you've heard of it). The actual party turned out to be pretty lame, though, for me. As it turns out, its denizens were mostly French or non-English speakers, and, as it turns out (as a general rule, I was later told), the French don't talk to someone at a party that they don't know or haven't been introduced to.

Around 3 AM, I got tired of the scene, found someone from my group to say goodbye to, and hot-footed it out of there. It was time to try the Noctilien (Parisian night bus). Unfortunately, a lousy ability to use public bus systems (metros are easy enough) as well as it being 3 AM led to some fairly difficult issues. After missing my first bus to falling asleep, I managed to take the second, 20 minutes later, to the wrong side of Paris. I searched, at 4 AM, for my bus back to Chatlet (middle of Paris). Finally finding it, I was able to make it back to the transportation hub. Of course, Chatlet is huge, and it took another 30 min to find and catch the next bus to my house. Arriving at 5:30, I pretty much immediately passed out.

Accordingly, I spent the next two days in sheer laziness. Saturday, I did little other than watch American TV and go to Montmarte with some friends. Sunday was filled with housekeeping and museum going (it was free -- first Sunday of the month). That was actually quite nice; I got to see most of Rodin's masterpieces.

I'm hoping that next weekend I can actually get out and go see some of Europe. The problem is that summer travel is quite expensive. Maybe I'll rent a car...

From September 2006 to January 2007, I lived in Rouen, France. 
I was in France to teach English and therefore I'd rented an apartment, which happened to be situated on la Rue de la Republique, a busy cobblestone street, surrounded by the juxtaposition of half-timbered medieval architecture and the Gaumont, a modern movieplex.
I was stashed five-flights up, in an outwardly-bland building.
However, once free from the creeping, musty elevator, I unlocked my door and voila! 
I lived in a penthouse.
I was mistress of a spacious amber and amethyst-hued salon: one wall of which was lined with outwardly- opening windows that are perfect for apple-tarte breakfasts.
The salon was equipped with a small library, a non-working radio, several languorous lounges, velveteen armchairs, and a painted privacy-screen used during an afternoon nap (induced by a Sunday of Satie), or employed as an after-dinner boudoir for muffled caresses. 

Divided from the salon by a narrow yellow hall, was the kitchen, toilet-room, bathroom, and my bedroom.

Looking out of my bedroom-window at night, I stared at la fleche, the steeple of La Cathedrale, a luminous arrow aimed into the night.

This Weblog aspires only to appreciate such lights, to share the arrows that pierce the darkness.

To take a quick break from sports, I'm going to write about another popular topic on SWTCTW- strange weddings. (For evidence of this, please click here and here) Everyone has heard the jokes about marriage being a life sentence and whatnot. This story is the perfect combination of all these things in a sick and twisted way. Oh man, my mind is whirling with puns and bad jokes that I could make. Okay, maybe just one... Nihita Biswas can literally call her future hubby the old ball and chain.

Confessed French serial killer Charles Sobhraj, who is 64 and serving a life sentence in Nepal, is engaged to marry Nihita, a 20-year-old Nepalese girl. Here is their how we met story: they met when she was applying to be a translator for one of his lawyers. (Cute? No?) Oh, and he is best known by his criminal nickname, "The Serpent".

There are so many things wrong with this! Besides the whole killing people thing, I don't think I could ever marry someone with a nickname that sounds like it comes from a Batman movie! (Sidenote: I am so excited for the new Batman movie. Why, Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeath, why? I love you.) What are his evil powers, besides the obvious? I wish this was an episode of Scrubs and you could see what goes on in my head. Damn my wild imagination.

Even though you can't see what goes on in my head, use your own to imagine the conversation she had with her mother. Moms essentially all ask the same basic questions when it comes to learning about the new man in her daughter's life. What is his name? What is he like? What does he do? Or in the case of marriage, they ask when the date for the wedding is. For the Serpent and his lady, this all depends on whether the Nepal Supreme Court accepts his appeal and let's him out of his life sentence. Good luck with that. The point is, not one answer to any of the basic questions is good! How do even you answer 'what does he do'?

Instead of answering all of these questions for the news story, the blushing bride to be commented on the 44 year age gap between them.

"I am mature enough to decide for myself," she said. "Age does not make a difference."

Age is the least of your worries, hun. I think your number one priority should be, umm, staying alive.

The Frenchman has in the past admitted to killing several Western tourists, and he is believed to have murdered at least 20 people in Afghanistan, India, Thailand, Turkey, Nepal, Iran and Hong Kong during the 1970s.

So this story isn't quite Sunday New York Times wedding announcement material, but it's still a wedding announcement. Congratulations to the happy couple? I demand an invite and there best be an open bar.

Dear Sir,

I understand of the need for closure for the families of the many victims.  However, what I do not understand is the need to constantly paint Bulgaria in such dark colors.  This article goes beyond its stated point, to avenge the East Germans killed in Bulgaria.  This article goes on to make a mockery of all citizens in Bulgaria, of all Bulgarian government institutions.  In fact, this article dehumanizes Bulgarians in a way reminiscent of Cold War propaganda.

Why not instead focus on Bulgarians, such as Rosi, who helped Germans maltreated by the Communist regime?  Or perhaps, we should take a look at why Bulgaria had a Communist regime in the first place; the country was invaded by Soviet soldiers after allying itself with Germany in World War II.  Perhaps we should also mention that Bulgaria saved all of its Jews from the Nazi regime as well.

We live in a different era now.  While there is need for closure, there is no need to stoke flames of hatred against Bulgarians.  And there is certainly no need to revive the Cold War today.  The majority of Bulgarians of today are good people.  Let's not give them a reason to hate Germans.

I'm not trying to claim that the deaths of the 18 East Germans at the Bulgarian borders is forgiveable.  However, 18 deaths out of 'thousands' of East Germans who tried to flee the Communist bloc seems to point that Bulgaria's border patrol wasn't quite as heavy handed as the Spiegel article claims.  Oh yes, the border signs were written in German as well as Bulgarian.  Incidentally, the Editor of the Spiegel that I sent my letter to will be on maternity vacation until January 2nd, 2009.

Anyway, I think Germany should be trying to forge new ties with Bulgaria, much as France is doing right now.  France just signed a strategic partnership agreement with Bulgaria, and Bulgaria is buying two corvettes (naval ships, not Chevys) worth $1.49 billion.

L'enlèvement nocturne et Urasato' s escape from the Yamana-ya sont deux scènes nocturnes figurant la fuite nocturne de deux amoureux/amants, bravant l'interdit qui les empêche de vivre ensemble. L'influence de la première gravure sur la seconde illustration ne nous semble guère plausible, mais les similitudes en sont d'autant plus frappantes. Instants dramatiques arrêtés, chaque image s'inscrit graphiquement comme le passage entre deux mondes, deux lieux... L'enfermement / la liberté, la vie tracée / la volonté d'agir sur sa destinée.

• L'enlèvement nocturne. Gravure à l'eau-forte et au burin. 1780. "Peint à Gouasse par A. Beaudoin Peintre du Roi -- Gravé par Nicolas Ponce".
