The caller was frantic, writes E.R. RAMACHANDRAN.
“Is this Indian Confederation of MPs: iCON?

The caller was frantic, writes E.R. RAMACHANDRAN.

"Is this Indian Confederation of MPs: iCON?"

"It is. How did you come to know of our organisation? A few of us just recently started this. What do you want?"

"Somebody told me it's a new outfit for ‘Saving Democracy’ in India. We need your help. I am the spokesman of the PPP and PML-N. Asif Zardari asked me to get in touch with you."

"What can we do for you?"

"A lot. We are moving a motion to get President Pervez Musharraf impeached. We are short of a few MPs to get two-thirds’ majority. We know you are good in organising such things at short notice. We want the motion passed in Parliament. But the thing is we don’t have the required numbers."

"Leave that to us. But it could cost you a lot. First we have to get the opposing MPs to vote for your side. Then we have to tail your MPs. Finally, there's our fees, too."

"Why tail our MPs? They are OK. They are with us."

"Oh, are they! You don’t understand the back side of democracy!! We may have to use 'Resort Politics' to keep your MPs like a flock of sheep and shepherd them to a resort so that Musharraf and his men can’t poach them. We move them from resort to resort and bring them directly to the House on the day of voting. Sometimes you may to have to change the bus midstream so that nobody has a clue where you are taking them next. Their mobiles will have to be confiscated temporarily. You will learn all this by and by."

"You guys are so good in these things! What’s your fee?"

"Double of what we charged here."

"You will make sure the motion for impeachment will be passed?"

"We never quote without making sure of the result. 50% payment before the job balance after the job."

Tring, tring.

"Hang on. There’s another call. Hello!”

"Am I speaking to Indian Confederation of MPs: iCON?"

“Yes, you are. Who's speaking? What do you want?”

"I am a member of PML-N Party in Islamabad. The PPP and PML-Q parties are planning to bring an impeachment motion on our President Janab Musharraf. We want to defeat the motion. You are listed under ‘Save Democracy’ in Google. I got your number from your ambassador. We want your help."

"Hold on for a sec."

"Sorry for putting you on the hold. Let me know how you are making the payment. Call me in the evening."

"Hello! You want our help to defeat the motion to impeach president Musharraf. Am I right?”

"That’s right. Kaam pakka hojana chaahiye. What are your charges?"

"Four times what we charged for the Indian job."

"That’s too much."

"It‘s tough saving the Head of a State. We don’t have any experience in this sort of a thing. We want to make it foolproof. The other side may use ‘Resort’ politics. We have to have a counter plan. Will do your job. Apart from cash we want CDs of Ghulam Ali, Mehndi Hassan and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan."

"Don’t worry about that. Will send CDs and also arrange a separate bhaitak of mian Ghulam Ali at your house. Our job should be done."

"Kaam ho gaya, samjho."

***

Nobody knows for sure what will happen. But one thing is certain. There’s bound to be some Indian Hand in this.

Whenever we talk about great singers, Ghulam Ali (alias Gulam Ali, Chhote Gulam Ali) cannot be forgo

Whenever we talk about great singers, Ghulam Ali (alias Gulam Ali, Chhote Gulam Ali) cannot be forgotten. He is popular through the whole world breaking the barriers of langugages. He has sung in many languages including Urdu, Hindi, Nepali etc. But mostly he is known for his touching Gazals.
The present song is the icon for Gulam Ali. Whenever Gulam Ali is talked about, this song pops up at the first place.
I am happy to present the same song in three versions. The first version is an old live version-

Part One

Part Two

The second version is the Movie version, the song is used in a movie named "Nikah", the biggest hit of the year.

The third version is another live many years after the original version.

Being a studio recording, this one is rich in audio quality compared to those Ghulam Ali has sung in public concerts. But then, there are many including me, who love his public performances. I am going to bring in more of his public performances in the future. For now, enjoy this Ghazal.

I do not know how many of you have listened to this composition sung by Ghulam Ali. This does not sound like a Ghulam Ali composition anyway. In fact, Ghulam Ali has sung many Ghazals the music for which has been composed by someone else. Though this Ghazal is available in many compilations, I believe the Ghazal was originally released under the album "Mehraab". Correct me if I am wrong. But for now, listen to this Ghazal as it is not bad at all.

This Ghazal is among the top ten of my Ghulam Ali favourites. I first listened to this Ghazal about 18 years ago and I still listen to it. Of course, there is a studio recording version of this Ghazal which is available in the market which is equally beautiful. However, Ghalam Ali ads a set new shades to his Ghazals while performing live on a stage. This one is one of them. I am sure you will enjoy it!

Kabhi Kaha Na Kisi Se Tere Fasaane Ko

Sunaa Hai Gair Ki Mehfil Mein Tum Na Jaaoge
kaho Toh Aaj Saja Luu Garib Khaane Ko

Duaa Bahaar Ki Maangi Toh Itane Phul Khile
Kahi Jagaah Na Mili Mere Aashiyaane Ko

Chaman Mein Jaana Toh Sayyad Dekh Kar Jaana
Akele Chhod Kar Aayaa Huu Aashiyaane Ko

Meri Lahad Pe Patango Ka Khoon Hota Hai
Huzur Shama Na Laaya Kare Jalaane Ko

Dabaa ke Qabra mein Sab Chal Diye Duaa Na Salaam
Zaraa Si Der Mein Kya Ho gaya Zamaane Ko

Ab Aage Is Mein Tumhaare Bhi Naam Aayega
Jo Hukm Ho To Yahii Chhod Duu Fasaane Ko

This Ghazal is in the memory of past 'good' memories. Ghulam Ali has been blessed with such a wonderful voice. No one could have sung this ghazal better than him. Such ghazals are tailor-made for him. The writer has done a beautiful job in composing this prose. The combination of Ghulam Ali's deep voice, this poetic ghazal happens to touch depths of my heart. That is why it happens to be in my favourite list.

This one featured in some old movie called Nikah. I am clueless about its writer.

Could anything be better than this ?
Yes!!!

There is apparently a longer version sung by Ghulam Ali (again) and above mentioned one is the shorter one made for movie obviously due to consideration of ghazal duration.

Ghazal is a special kind of light Indian classical music and it is more poetic rather than musical and it is never more than 12 shers (couplets) and usually have about 7 shers. The word 'ghazal' refers to a way of talking to a women. So it reflects an expression of love. But today it has touched every aspects of human life from sadness to happiness there is hardly anytihing which has not been said through it.

Classical Ghazal

The art of Classical Ghazal was first introduced by Begum Akhtar and later on, Ustad Mehdi Hassan. These two artists have brought the sensuality of the ghazal and the complexity of Indian raagas to the main masses, and before their introduction, the common masses did not understand the Indian Classical Music tradition of "Khaayal", "Thumri" and "Dadra." A common misconception of Classical artists are that Ghazals are categorized as "light classical" when indeed that is not the case. Classical Ghazals are far more difficult to render because of the expression of the "shers" or couplets of the ghazal. Begum Akhtar and Mehdi Hassan have been hailed as the main pioneers of Ghazal "Gayaki" or singing. Other emminent maestros include Pakistani Ghazal artists Farida Khanum and Ustad Ghulam Ali.

Ghazal and its popularity

Because of the complexity of the words, only the upper class could truly understand the sweetness of the Ghazal. The common masses could not understand most of the lyrics and the traditional classical raagas they were rendered in was too difficult to understand. Ghazal has undergone some transformations which helps it to reach a huge audience around the world. The simplification of Ghazal in terms of the words and phrases helps the masses to enjoy it. Most of the Ghazals are now sung with various styles which are not limited to 'khaayyal', 'thumri', 'raaga,'taala and other classical music. However, these forms of Ghazal are snubbed by purists of the Indian Classical Tradition. Singers like Jagjit Singh ( he was the first ghazal singer to incorporate the Western guitar in ghazals) Chandan Das,Hariharan,Pankaj Udhas and many others have been able to give ghazal a new shape by its incorporation in the field of modern music. Another young Canadian talent, Cassius Khan has also been hailed as the only classical Ghazal singer in the world who can accompany himself on the tabla. He is also capable of singing the recitational style of ghazal singing while playing the tabla, which is unique.
