It’s been a long flight from Budapest to Taiwan. My itinerary WAS Budapest - Amsterdam - Hong

It's been a long flight from Budapest to Taiwan. My itinerary WAS Budapest - Amsterdam - Hong Kong - Taiwan, but in the end, it is a totally different story...

It's a story marked with the keyword "delay".

Portnoy and I went to Budapest airport on time and found out MALEV (Hungarian Airlines) flight was late as always. On MALEV website, it writes:

Malév aircraft flying short- and medium-haul routes have the best on-time arrival performance, the first 2008 quarterly report of the Association of European Airlines (AEA) shows.

But I don't know why my flights with MALEV are both late for at least 40 minutes. It must be something wrong, either I am unlucky, or this report is @#@##.

Anyway, I rushed to the other gate as soon as I arrived in Amsterdam, as Schiphol Airport is HUGE. I didn't get on the plane. It's not because I missed the flight. I just couldn't get on the plane. Originally I thought it was a computer problem, since my name was spelled wrong in Budapest. After asking for a reason, however, the KLM flight attendant told me many airlines oversell tickets because some people never showed up. Sometimes, however, when everyone shows up, they will ask some customers "who are willing to" accept another flight and some compensations. (Hello? I didn't say I am willing to. You only told me I couldn't get on the plane!) She seemed to be so familiar with the whole apology and compensation process that it made me believe these kinds of things happen all the time.

That's why my flight was changed from 3:30pm to 8:45pm, which was later delayed to 9:40pm, to tell the truth. I stayed in Amsterdam airport for more than 6.5 hours instead of 1.5 hours.

By the way, I didn't transfer in Hong Kong, but in Bangkok on my way back to Taiwan. Of course, my flight to Bangkok was late again back to Taiwan (why am I not surprised?), and that's why I arrived at 6:45pm, not 11:45am in Taipei.

I know some GVers are still travelling around the world, such as Luis Carlos, Hana, Preetam, etc. Hope you all have the best travel karma on your way back to home.

After talking with my friend Jason and attending Global Voices Citizen Media Summit 2008 in Budapes

After talking with my friend Jason and attending Global Voices Citizen Media Summit 2008 in Budapest, I have been thinking about creating a new blog in English. Actually I have been urged to do that several times before, but because of laziness, it has never been realized.

Now I think it is the time for me to get connected with my friends around the world. The number has been growing, especially in the past year. It would be a pity if I lose these precious connections. Blogging in Chinese, they will almost never get a chance to know more about my life, which may been interesting to them.

I think in the next couple of days, I'll start from my trip and experience in Budapest, Hungary. Something is appearing in my mind. I should record it by words before it is forgotten in my daily trivial nonsenses.

Anyway, just say hi to the world. I am back from the world.

Before I used this blog for collecting my articles appeared in Hungarian newspapers. But last weekend I had a so strong experience of what is a blog can be used for, that I decided to write normal posts in English.

I also have to confess that I promised to Daudi from Kenya that I will start to write a blog when we met the Global Voices Online Summit's members at Corvintető which is an open-air club in Budapest.

Today was released my report about the summit in Népszabadság which is now Hungary's biggest newspaper - among the political (I mean not yellow press) newspapers.

I will translate my article next, but here's the link: http://nol.hu/cikk/497406/

Am filmat cu telefonul mobil inceputul prezentarii, iat-o (scuze pentru imaginea not so good, dar merita sa va uitati):

La sectiunea Q&A s-a pus aceasta intrebare: How can we help? Iata raspunsurile:

Enfim...

Quem cerca, desarma. Quem desarma, mobiliza a si desmobilizando o outro.

Sau in minus.

Citando:

"Global Voices seeks to aggregate, curate, and amplify the global conversation online - shining light on places and people other media often ignore. We work to develop tools, institutions and relationships that will help all voices, everywhere, to be heard." [About Global Voices - sobre os objectivos do projecto]

Integra também outros projectos, temporários ou permanentes, de cidadania global: Voices without Votes (America Votes, the World Speaks), Rising Voices (Helping the global population joining the global conversation), Lingua (Project Lingua seeks to amplify Global Voices in languages other than English with the help of volunteer translators), Calendar (calendar of citizen media events and other noteworthy dates), Global Voices Advocacy (seeks to build a global anti-censorship network of bloggers and online activists dedicated to protecting freedom of expression and free access to information online).

Inglês-> http://globalvoicesonline.org/for-bloggers/#badges
Português-> http://pt.globalvoicesonline.org/para-blogueiros/

Inglês-> http://globalvoicesonline.org/-/languages/portuguese/feed/
Português-> http://pt.globalvoicesonline.org/category/languages/portuguese/feed/

Grazie.

The first interesting point is Tweetburner: its most-clicked links shared on Twitter are almost entirely about the earthquake, and show some interesting uses:

A BBC blog post about Twitter coverage of the earthquake

A Twitter user's tweet about experiencing the earthquake (in Shanghai)

A Google translation from Chinese to English of tweets from Twitterlocal

The Earthquake Center's page on the earthquake

CNN's report

A picture which appears to be capturing the earthquake in an office

A Summize search for 'earthquake'

Here is crowdsourcing without the editorial management. How quickly otherwise would a journalist have thought of using Twitterlocal with a Google translation? And how soon before someone improves it so it only pulls tweets with the word 'earthquake', or more specific to the region affected? (It also emphasises the need for newspapers and broadcasters to have programmers on the team who could do this quickly)

How quickly would a journalist have found someone who speaks English and was affected by the quake? Or an image? (Of course, this needs verifying, but sourcing has already begun)

AlphaTwitter shows some of the same results but also included a video of someone experiencing tremors 950 miles away in Beijing, a Chinese language report (including that picture mentioned above) and an English language Chinese media report. Tweetmeme showed the same links as Tweetburner.

Twitt(url)y and Hashtags, meanwhile, both appeared to be down. And Intwition picked the worst possible time to pause their service for changes.

Twitter coverage of the earthquake

Robert Scoble was following proceedings on his much-followed Twitter, and feeding back information from his followers, including, for instance (after he tweeted the fact that Tweetscan was struggling) that people were saying Summize was the best tool to use.

If you followed the conversation through Scoble using Quotably, you could then find Gregg Scott, who in turn was talking to RedChina, Karoli, mmsullivan, and inwalkedbud who was in Chengdu, China (also there was Casperodj and Lyrrael).

If you wanted to check out inwalkedbud you could do so using Tweetstats and find he has been twittering since December. Sadly the Internet Archive doesn't bring any results, though.

The mainstream media had differing reports: RTE (Ireland) said "No major damage after China earthquake" - but UK's Sky News reported four children killed and over 100 injured; Chinaview (China) said no buildings had collapsed - but an Australian newspaper said they had.

Interestingly, Chinaview was slow loading, presumably because of excessive demand from users - another reason Twitter, with its 140 character minimalism, should in theory prove more useful during a major news event. I say in theory because Twitter is not as reliable as it should be.

World Wide Help, a blog set up following the Asian tsunami, started liveblogging it.

And perhaps the best coverage came from Shanghaiist, which also liveblogged it, including an image, links to twitter tweets, radio reports, Google Maps and video (many of these the same as listed above - it's hard to tell whether they got their links from Twitter or vice versa).

Interestingly, their latest update as I type is UPDATE 30, 5:32pm: Not confirmed, but from reliable source: "Propaganda dept has banned news outlets from sending own teams. All stories have to be from Xinhua." Anyone have more details?

From The Frontline recorded how they had used Twitter to follow events, and concluded the time for debate on the usefulness of Twitter is over. Well, of course.

It also brings up debates about the role of journalists in a networked age - given that I could follow the story (conversation) from an office in Birmingham UK, but mainly because I knew the right tools to do so, how does that affect the journalist's role? I'd answer that firstly they need to know the tools (including those of verification), and secondly they need to be in the conversations already. What's your excuse?

UPDATE: In another demonstration of the importance of being in the conversation, this blog post was linked to by Robert Scoble, generating a pingback (notification of a link), which made me read his blog post, which then led me to Global Voices Online's links to videos and other Twitter and blog reports (this is why journalists should be blogging). They link to a non-English summize search for, presumably, 'earthquake'. Another key point:

"Many are writing of difficulties connecting to those at the center of the quake zone over telephone, but the internet seems to still be functioning. Beijing-based tech guru Kaiser Kuo writes that the government Earthquake Bureau website is currently inaccessible, presumably from high levels of traffic."

UPDATE: Mathew Ingram adds:

"People can post messages about whatever they wish, rather than answering only the questions that a producer asks them, and they can add links to blog posts, photos, maps and video. In the study I wrote about recently that looked at Twitter and Facebook and Wikipedia as disaster reporting tools, one of the comments about the California fires was that the media focused on celebrities and how they were affected, but Twitter and other sources gave a more complete version of events and how they were affecting everyone."

From Better Living Through Software:

"It’s silly in the extreme to act like twitter is somehow breaking news, though. Masses of people within China found out about the earthquake as it was happening via messages from friends on QQ (which is massively more popular than twitter), and CCTV carried the news almost instantly. I suppose it’s cute that some English-speaking expats using echo-chamber technology were able to *also* report the event on twitter, but even the tweetscan example seems a bit lame to me. When I search for tweets with the word “地震”, tweetscan gives me nothing — apparently tweetscan doesn’t care about Chinese. Perhaps this explains why Scoble and BBC are reporting only English tweets from China."

UPDATE: Two more blog posts worth reading for their balanced effect. Firstly, the Daily Kos has a post that gives an overview of online coverage in both English and Chinese, including a link to the QQ Earthquake video page. Digital Watch talks of the hubris of those hyping the role of Twitter in coverage:

"Twitter’s immediacy was nice, but by no means unique. The whole time I was twittering, my wife was on her instant messengers, with both QQ and MSN Live open. She was also monitoring all the portals’ news flashes on the quake. I didn’t feel like I had any more information than she did

"Twitter’s public nature was of some real value both for ordinary folk and for professional journalists, who were able to quickly identify English-speakers on the scene who could be interviewed. The broadcast nature of Twitter, while it can bore one to tears when used to gratuitously announce one’s pedestrian comings and goings, was in this case something that made it better than simple IM.

"The other dimension to Twitter that proved very useful in this case was its global usership: there were lots of Chinese messages I was following, and I was among many people bilingual individuals translating more useful, insightful, or interesting tweets from Chinese into English. Call it “bridge microblogging.”"

More on Zuckerman's homophily and Obama's empathy. Cross-posted from TPMCafe.

...

We had an interesting discussion yesterday about the tendency we all have to choose information that validates our beliefs and reject the information that doesn't. The conversation focused mostly on the politics of the moment, both the conservative/liberal divide and the Obama/Clinton divide. Certainly, we can see in some of the discussions that devoted supporters of both sides have a tough time digesting bad info but love to trumpet good info. That's an important thing for us as a community to contemplate.

But it's also essential, I think, to broaden the focus from just our little world of debate to the whole world itself. In fact, I think Obama has pointed us in a direction that encourages us to break out of these mindsets even beyond our partisan politics.

I wrote last May about a speech Obama gave in which he argued that we as a country suffer from an empathy deficit. He said, at the time:

There's a lot of talk in this country about the federal deficit. But I think we should talk more about our empathy deficit - the ability to put ourselves in someone else's shoes; to see the world through those who are different from us - the child who's hungry, the laid-off steelworker, the immigrant woman cleaning your dorm room.

It's an important point, and one that is foundational to his form of communitarian liberalism. The question, though, is how we get there. Some of it has to just be cultivating more selflessness as simply a mental habit. Make an effort to think more about others, try to be more patient and open-minded, etc. That much most liberals usually agree is important.

But we can also now do it with information consumption. In this era when we can choose whatever information we want, we can cultivate our empathetic imaginations by making an effort to learn about the lives of folks different from ourselves.

Ethan Zuckerman, the founder of an organization called Global Voices that aggregates reporting and opinion from the blogosphere all over the world, calls this tendency for birds of a feather to flock together (socially, imformationally, whatever) "homophily." Homophily, he argues, makes us stupid. His point is essentially the same one that Atrios made in my post from yesterday. We all have tendencies to be hacks.

The opportunity we have, though, to cultivate our empathy (a desire Zuckerman ascribes to "xenophiliacs", people who love to learn about things that are different) is amazing. Zuckerman's approach is to reach out across the globe and try to bring "global voices" into American conversation. So, instead of relying on what the New York Times says people in Iraq are saying, we can go over and read it on their blogs for ourselves.

The same is possible, I think, here in the US. Obama asks us to learn to put ourselves in the shoes of a steelworker, an immigrant cleaner, or a child. But, as new media and high-speed internet proliferates, maybe we'll be able to go out and read their blogs as well. Find out from them what they think, what their lives are like, what they believe.

The choice online, then, is fairly radical. We can choose to be homophiliac hacks who read only content and live in only communities that validates us and our beliefs. Or we can cultivate our social empathy and reach out across not just the partisan or ideological spectrum, but also racial, class, age or gender divides that exist within what is supposed to be a single national community.

It's increasingly a matter of what information we choose to consume.

Russia has a new president, in name at least. Former president Vladimir Putin is expected to expand his own authority as the new prime minister. The vote that brought Dmitry Medvedev to power was seen as neither free nor fair. But that's not putting a damper on the pomp and parades in Moscow this week. Medvedev's inauguration today took place in the Kremlin's St. Andrew's Hall. Reports from there say the event was short, solemn, emotional. The BBC has some nice video. Here's the story I put on the air today.

My London-based colleague, Fiona Cameron got hold of a well-known Russian cartoonist, Mikhail Zlatkovsky. And I included one clip from him in today's story. He seems to be a very interesting character. Here's a link to some of his cartoons. And here's another audio clip from Fiona's interview with Zlatkovsky, where he's talking about what he's drawing now and whether he's going to start putting Medvedev in satirical cartoons any time soon.

Members of the political opposition in Russia planned to hold a rally in Moscow yesterday. But the demonstration never happened. Dozens of people were detained by police, according to news reports. This blog post includes some photos of arrests taking place on 6 May. Thanks to Veronica Khokhlova of Global Voices Online for the link and translations.
