Early reports are suggesting that the Android operating system will be very "developer friendly". Android is promoted and supported by Google for the crop of new phones coming this fall. The OS will be very open for developers and robust, suggesting we'll see a lot of great innovation in this space very soon, innovation that is consistent with Google's very open architecture standards (except in search!)

Android Guys published an image of the Google/Android phone that T-Mobile is supposed to release. Code named the G1, here's how it looks:

Judge for yourself. I think its positively ugly. If they are intending to take on the iPhone with this thing, they got to be joking. The keyboard hidden under the display like some of the present phones, is really something of an acquired taste. And way too many buttons.

The site had an article that spells out the specs for the Android phone. Take a look(verbatim from the article):

528Mhz Qualcomm 7201 processor

Data kit for USB connectivity in the box

64MB Internal RAM

Dedicated YouTube Player

Audio playback files - MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA, MPEG4, WAV, MIDI, REAL AUDIO, OGG

Wallpaper supports JPG, BMP, PNG, and GIF

Speakerphone (mono, natch)

Ringtones (MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA)

HTTP, WAP Push, xHTML

SMS and MMS support (Take that Apple!)

POP, IMAP, and SMTP, AOL, and GMAIL email

AIM, MSN, YAHOO, and GTALK messaging

Quad Band (850, 900, 1800, 1900)

Apple's elegant products cocoon customers from chaos of the information age. The new iPhone could a breakout hit and be the device that must people use to access the net. But there's a shadow hanging over Apple and its's being cast by Google. It lead a coalition to build a n OS called Android that will work in the next generations of cell phone as wells as other consumer smart devices. The Google and its friends got 34 members- mobile phone carriers and handset makers . This sounds trouble for Steve Jobs, we know Google , it will crush anything that stands on its way, and that including Microsoft or even Apple. iPhone vs. Gphone: the war of the wireless. Is Google's Android powered Gphone has just been created to take on Apple's iPhone and to steal away its revenue stream? Will Google bull the wireless the way it bull the web? But the wireless doesn't work the way the web works, its quiet different. There are rules here and games must be played. If done right, the Gphone will changed the future of mobile cell phone. But iPhone got amazing technology

Apple's skills has always been cutting edge technology and making it accessible. The technology work to delight the masses. Its has all the requirements to be a viable platform. the first ever, fully equipped, functional hand held computer. That was the scariest thing. Will Gphone beat iPhone? Google's Open handset Alliances( The Coalition behind Android) could actually dwarf Apple Platform. It got formidable resources and deep pockets. Google makes its money on a free and open web, its projects are built to be hacked, making it the favorite of third party programmers. Speculations emerged that its Gphone is more secure than Apple's proprietary iPhone, and its pack of cutting edge technology. Well just bring it Google! Users don't care whether it got symbian, windows, androids or whatever. what they want is its works better . Gphone vs. iPhone: a good match, the search king vs. the consumers electronics champs.

The Android Guys are reporting on the design of the Google Phone from T Mobile and it's looking pretty impressive. They also link to a spec sheet showing the phone will have a sizeable screen, pull out keyboard, 3 megapixel camera, and more.

I'm glad to have been correct to suggest the phone would make it out before next year and expect this to be a very popular 2008 Christmas Gift, even if the pricing is higher than I expect which is $150-$250 or perhaps even less to undercut the Apple iPhone market.

This earlier-than-announced launch is probably very bad news for Sprint's instinct and other smartphones, as it is likely that we'll see the smartphones of choice become either Apple or Android based phones.

So, here in India the iPhone was atlast unveiled yesterday and that is at mid night. And all the lucky ones got their hands onto it. Everyone there was really excited with beaming faces and all. I don't see anything great about the so called iPhone even if its a 3G what's the big deal about that. It is deficient in many features when you compare with a nominal mobile phone in India and guess when it is compared with the upcoming gPhone that is the HTC Dream that comes loaded with the brand Googles Android OS. Andy Rubin showed a glimpse of how the looks might be to the BBC back in Feb and I thought the thing looks really great. The thing that strikes about Android is that the way Google has carried its launch. The ADC has given every developer a chance to prove themselves and by making this a kind of a contest Google has made it more exciting. And each of the Android developer has brought a fresh idea with him which is fantastic. And even few guys who missed out the bus one of them being the Geomata team whose idea of finding places with blip which is quite innnovative and exciting also might get a chance the second time.

[caption id="attachment_222" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="gPhone "][/caption]

Many versions of the names though are doing their rounds as few of the insiders were heard talking about the codes like "G1" and the "kila". HTC though is bringing up its Dream which would be equipped with Android.

However, the latest specs are said to be these as put up by the Androidguys:

UMTS/HSDPA 3.6Mbps
Qualcomm MSM7201A 528MHz processor
Synaptics capacitive touchscreen
GPS w/built-in compass
128MB RAM / 256MB Flash

I hope to develop an app myself for Android. Hope that'll be soon.

As iPhone is released today there has been a flurry of activity in the Telecom Sector this month. Wi

As iPhone is released today there has been a flurry of activity in the Telecom Sector this month. With the technological changes on the anvil moving from current cell phones to the next generation devices and service providers is certain for the common man in India. The two new technologies which will soon be vying for your money are 3G and WiMax. Let's find out how they stack up against each other and which could eventually be the winner.

THE DEVICES

3G is represented by the iPhone and WiMax by Dream or more commonly known as Google phone which is to be manufactured by HTC. HTC as many would know is already producing competing devices against iPhone. A comparison between iPhone 3G and HTC Touch Diamond can be found here.

THE AVAILABILITY

iPhone is now available from 22nd August 2008 in India, while Dream will make its worldwide debut during October and November.

THE PRICING

iPhone is available for Rs 36100 for the 16 GB model where as gPhone is likely to be highly subsidized by ad revenue therefore much cheaper to the end consumer.

THE NETWORK/TECHNOLOGY

WiMax works over Internet and Cellular networks both. In current deployments, speeds are often closer to 2 Mbit/s at 10 km being stationery.3G works over cellular networks, speeds on paper are 2Mbit/s stationery but it drop to 384 Kbps in a moving vehicle.

THE USES

Advantages which both technologies offer are similar.

· Fast downloads

· Interactive gaming

· Global positioning over Internet

· Video calls - Face-to-face collaboration provides for a more effective exchange of information, faster problem resolution and increased productivity.

· Emergency Response: Effective disaster management requires an immediate, accurate assessment of the situation and continuous monitoring of events during response

· Manufacturing: Utilizing 3G visual communications, field engineers can quickly address equipment maintenance issues or supply chain disruptions, visually exchanging critical information with remote engineering or home office support to assess and resolve the situation.

· Site Assessment: 3G visual communications can enable remote collaboration on potential construction sites,as well as visual updates on project progress.

THE 3G DISADVANTAGE

Although 3G was successfully introduced to users across the world, some issues are debated by 3G providers and users:

· Expensive input fees for the 3G service licenses

· Numerous differences in the licensing terms

· Large amount of debt currently sustained by many telecommunication companies, which makes it a challenge to build the necessary infrastructure for 3G

· Lack of member state support for financially troubled operators

· Expense of 3G phones

· Lack of buy-in by 2G mobile users for the new 3G wireless services

· Lack of coverage, because it is still a new service

· High prices of 3G mobile services in some countries, including Internet access

· Current lack of user need for 3G voice and data services in a hand-held device

· High power usage

INDIAN GOVERNMENT'S POLICY

With the government auctioning the 3G spectrum last month, 3G operators such as Airtel and Vodafone were in jubilation mode till Department of Telecommunication, Government of India announced deregulation of VoIP which will hugely benefit consumers since TRAI on Monday allowed the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to permit local, STD and ISD calls from Computers to Mobile and land lines or vice versa without any restriction. However for using VOIP landline service, consumers will have to spend only Rs 500 to Rs 1,500 for buying a specialised device to convert a landline into a VOIP phone that also needs a broadband connection

THE WINNER – gPhone/WiMax

Technological factors and cost factors e.g. few entry barriers, lack of IPRs etc. make WiMax easily win the battle. Also WiMAX is a possible replacement candidate for cellular phone technologies such as GSM and CDMA, and can also be used as a layover to increase capacity.

THE FUTURE

Given the limited wired infrastructure as a result of prohibitive costs and unsympathetic geography in India the costs to install a WiMAX station are likely to be small in comparison to developing a wired solution. Here WiMAX can enhance wireless infrastructure in an inexpensive, decentralized, deployment-friendly and effective manner.Due to the huge potential benefits to the populations of nations on account of providing services such as education, tele medicine, entertainment these technologies must be taken to the rural areas of India for Inclusive growth.

Yahoo has rolled out a new mobile search site tailored to be used on Apple’s iPhones and iPods

Yahoo has rolled out a new mobile search site tailored to be used on Apple's iPhones and iPods. In spite of growing number of problems being reported against the iPhone, the user acceptance of the device is unquestionable. iPhone is the undisputed king at present and it would take a huge effort to even pose a challenge to its position let alone dislodge it.

Many people are touting Google's Android to be the next big thing with the potential of displacing iPhone from its venerated position. Surely its not going to easy though.

For starters, the number of iPhones that have been sold is in itself a record. Can any other phone, be it from Google or anybody else, really match that? The phone industry has been revolutionized ever since the iPhone was launched. Apple thinks differently and thinks for the users and that philosophy has been embodied in the iPhone. As of now, the iPhone seems to be the yardstick against which all other phones would be measured. Would the Google phone measure up to this high standard? This remains to be seen.

Apple's iPhone has also got a lot of support. With companies like Yahoo, etc. offering customized offerings for the iPhone, the dominance is being further entrenched. With Mobile Me and the App Store, Apple has also strengthened its position. The controversies not withstanding, the App Store has registered record number of downloads. With the possible introduction of a subscription based iTunes in September, Apple is surely offering a whole lot of options for the users.

Google's Android is surely facing a much tougher challenge when compared to what its search faced. The dominant search engine before Google was Yahoo. But the advantage that Google had was that Yahoo decided to bask in its glory of being the leader and did very little to further cement its position. Google took full advantage of that. But in Apple, Google has a more difficult opponent. Not only does Apple enjoy a huge fanbase but the company is always trying to improve its products.

The competition that Google would face in Apple would be something totally new for them. Going by Google's credentials this should be a very keenly fought contest.

Ever since Apple’s iPhone made its debut, there have been a slew of handsets from other manufa

Ever since Apple's iPhone made its debut, there have been a slew of handsets from other manufactures touted to be iPhone killers. The fact that so many handsets wanted to "kill" the iPhone does indicate the dominant position that the iPhone has acquired ever since it was introduced. But sadly enough the LG Voyager, Blackberry Thunder, Samsung Instinct, etc. all failed to achieve what they set out to do. The iPhone still is the dominant phone in the market today.

The HTC Dream, some prefer to call it the GooglePhone or GPhone, seems to be newest gladiator in this colosseum where phones try to "kill" each other. The notable thing about the HTC is that its based on Google's Android platform. The HTC Dream is yet to hit the market but there have been a lot of videos and photos going around in the blogosphere. Here's a video:

If we go by the video then the Dream would be just another also-ran. No way is it going to kill the iPhone. The video shows that the touch screen is really unresponsive. Also the slide-out keyboard is something I never liked and neither endorsed. Just too many moving parts there. There seem to be a few applications on the phone but the video is just too blurry to make them out properly. Judging by this video, the HTC Dream does not seem to pose a threat to the iPhone unless HTC improves it drastically.

Even if HTC does improve the Dream to match the iPhone in terms of ease-of-use and performance, it will still have a very hard time dislodging the iPhone from its lofty pedestal. The Apple App Store, despite numerous reports about Apple's policy, has been a significant success and has further cemented the iPhone position as the leader. The variety and number of applications that are already available for the iPhone are huge. For the Dream to be as successful, HTC and Google need to come up with something similar to the App Store and make sure that consumers can get their hands on applications. That would be a pretty uphill task for sure.

Needless to say, we still need to be looking forward to the Dream since its success would directly have an impact on Google's Android. Hopefully Google would be able to muster the support of the developer community and offer a store for Android applications. Shall we call it the Dream Store?

(belga)

Update (8/5): HTC’s CFO confirmed that HTC Dream, an Android based device will be out in Q4 20

Update (8/5): HTC's CFO confirmed that HTC Dream, an Android based device will be out in Q4 2008. The Dream is similar in size and shape to the HTC Tilt, a candy-bar, slider.

Given the recent developer discontentwith Android SDK from Google, it is clear that Google is learning what it takes to bring a quality Mobile OS to market. However, according to this report, analyst Jack Gold thinks, Google should tie up with the Symbian foundation and forget about Android. Now, that would make a lot of sense. Google could contribute its OS to the Symbian foundation, be a major player on the foundation and devote its resource to its core strength of developing multi-platform applications.

Google still contend that an Android-based device, aka the GPhone, will be out in the second half of 2008. Certainly, the pressure is mounting with iPhone 3G out in the wild, and RIM, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and LG announcing a stellar lineup for the rest of year (see this post for RIM, this post for Nokia, this post for Sony Ericsson, post one and two for Samsung, and this one for LG). Not to mention, yesterday's Microsoft employee memo by Steve Ballmer hinting at a Zune phone on the horizon. So is GPhone a pipe dream? I think not, and blogosphere certainly does not think so. However, when will it launch is debatable. I believe that Google will most probably announce the GPhone in 2009 at their major developer shin-dig.

Recent buzz about the gPhone being designed by the ADG (Ammunition Design Group) of San Fransisco m

Recent buzz about the gPhone being designed by the ADG (Ammunition Design Group) of San Fransisco may or may not have been confirmed by the honchos of the company, but what is almost certain is Google's unmistakable ambition to enter the mobile web space in a big way. Typically, in a 'Google style', they want to bring in a game-changing power play. A play that will tilt the market in it's favor much the same way it has done in the field of internet advertising. It has created such a strong force there that even Bill Gates had to praise it as a 'very nice revenue stream'.

So if it really has to be the 'Google' way, the rumor about g-phone being the centerpiece of it, does not sound convincing. There is a philosophical difference in how 'Google' thinks about its businesses than 'Apple'. Google will never be the 'sexy machine' company that will pull users into using it. Rather, it is known for working below the surface and capturing the whole ecosystem under its clutches. So whosoever makes any money in the system, a cut of it is always bound to be directed to Google's coffer. Open Handset Alliance (OHA) or Open Social platform under the 'Android' program is a very definite indicator to that direction.

After Google bought Android in July 2005, Silicon Valley pulsed with gossip and speculation about what the search giant was planning. Everyone figured Apple had a phone in the works and assumed Google must be developing one too...but when Google finally broke its silence in early November, there was nothing about a gPhone. In stead there was a talk of building an alliance of 34 wireless companies including Intel & Sprint Nextel. This was how Google planned to shake up the nearly trillion-dollar global wireless market? A consortium?

Read more about this interesting 'Wired' article here.

Though the importance of the client device, supposedly named gPhone, is equally strategic to Andy Rubin, the original proponent of Android, now in Google; it should not be compared to the iPhone for fairness' sake.

"The comparison between Android and the iPhone is unfair. The iPhone, with all its glorious UI experience, is a very closed and tightly controlled platform. The promise of Android is not a better user experience but rather an open experience - the sort of stuff that the mobile web really requires at this stage."

With the power of openness, comes the loss of control. But that does not matter as long as the user can fulfill their goal seamlessly rather than worrying about compatibility all the time. Again from the Facebook experience, we have seen users are not willing to trust the third party applications in terms of security and traceability. Google will have to address that problem in a major way if Android has to become the de facto mobile web standard in the near future. They need to carefully trade off how much control to let go and how much to retain, in order to maintain sanity.

Web has changed from being only PC centric for a fairly long time. And since Mobile web, that is 'always on' and 'always available', scores a major point towards being 'Cloud Computing Ready', Google seems to have big plans to create completely new grounds of business with the launch of Android, particularly in PAAS (Platform as Service) or IAAS (Infrastructure as service). These new offerings will allow anyone to create and launch web applications on Google 'App Engine' hosting service. Even some applications can be custom made by the user communities for very narrow usage bands. And that just may be the beginning of a very different kind of Internet. Sounds too much like Web 3.0? We will have to wait and watch it play out to know the real worth of such ambitious vision...
