In simple words, the first impressions of Kuselan music can be termed as Average. G.V. Prakash

In simple words, the first impressions of Kuselan music can be termed as Average. G.V. Prakash's music can take sometime to grow on you (Just like ARR's) and sometimes you will love the music more when you watch the video. For example, When listening to Sivaji for the first few times, the songs Style and Athiradee didn't stick to me. But once I saw the movie and the song picturisation, I went "Brilliant". It is really in the hands of the director to leverage the music's ability. GVP's Polladhavan had a similar fate with me. I only liked "Minnalgal Koothadum" from that album, but once I saw the movie the rest of the album caught up with me as I was able to relate the Audio with Video in much more clarity.

The album has 5 songs. On the first round, I loved the song - Sollamma. It is a pure, soft, mild melodious number sung by none other than the "Indian Bono" Hariharan ( I don't know if it is appropriate to call him that). This song had the GVP touch for melody.

After a couple more listening, I began to like Charal and Om Zaara re. Shreya Ghosal does a great job in raining the tunes of Charal, I bet this is the song that will feature as an opening sequence for Nayanthara, must be a treat to her fans.

For the first time ever Daler Mahendi sings for a Tamil Song and I guess he must be thrilled to open his innings with none other than the Superstar. Om Zaara re seems to have been brilliantly customized for Daler Mahendi, as his voice lends the necessary match for the tune and the beat. Since, this is his first tamil song I will be forgiving his Tamil pronounciations. Yet, He has done a good job and his Tamil Massacre is less gory than Udit Narayan's 100th Tamil song.

The song Cinema Cinema seems to be a celebration song for Cinema and the Superstar but lacks the oomph needed for such kind of a song. This song will heavily depend on how it is picturised, until then it will need a ton of glue to stick on to me.

Perinba seems to be recycled from "Veyilodu vilaiyadi". It seems like Recycling is a heriditary disease. GVP's Uncle ARR has done it more than a few times, very noticeably. GVP could have made this less obvious by atleast using a different singer. This song just like Cinema Cinema praises the Superstar but fails to bring the much needed Punch. I guess this will also depend on how the video would turn out to be.

The thing that is missing in the album is a theme music. GVP is good at background scores. His BGMs in Polladhavan, Kireedom, Veyil were mind blowing. When you watch the movie in DTS the BGM will take you into the movie frame by frame. I guess we have to see how GVP fares in Kuselan with respect to Background score when the movie comes out.

Kuselan Music is a Conditional Winner.

If you liked the review please Digg it.

PS: Beware of Om Zaara Re. This one is very catchy.

Whenever India celebrates Independence day, the first song that plays all over the radios and televisions will be that of Rahman's Vande Mataram. Talking about Vande Mataram, two people redefined the sound of patriotism. And the names we thank is Bharath Bala and A R Rahman. Hardly, when the new generation of Indians seems to forget the great lines of Rabindranath Tagore, it was Bharath Bala who felt that it must not happen. So he brought up the idea and Rahman gave complete justice to it.

Bharath Bala shares his experience with Rahman on Vande mataram for an exclusive interview for a leading news portal.

A R Rahman and Vande Mataram : Rahman is my schoolmate and a friend. We have worked together in over more than a hundred commercials. When the idea of Vande Mataram came to me, I created a CD cover with the tricolour and presented it to him. I said to him, "This is your first music album." Till that time he was scoring music only for feature films.

It was an enormous challenge for both of us. We then embarked on a journey to discover India and ourselves. It took six months of traveling before he wrote Maa Tujje Salam. The effort was to create something which we would be proud of even after five or 10 years. We turned out to be right.
I was in a different spirit all the time. It was magical and there was a certain madness when we held on to an idea and believed in it no matter what. We never thought about the result.

The beauty of Vande Mataram was the feeling I got when I heard it for the very first time, and then again after 10 years. The feeling remained the same, and I think it did for a lot of Indians too.

My father saw Vande Mataram before he passed away. I am sure he would have been very proud of it. After we did Maa Tuje Salam, India Today told my father that though the song starts with Maa, it should have been Appa Tuje Salam because it was he who influenced me to make that song.

Rahman and I do very little work but the work we did would probably live forever.

Making Jana Gana Mana

It was Kanaka, my wife, partner and co-director who said we should do Jana Gana Mana next. The idea inspired us to create anthems with the greatest maestros and the young contemporaries so that it became a part of India.

So, we brought in singers both young and old like D K Pattammal, Bhimsen Joshi, Lata Mangeshkar, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Balamurali Krishna, Hariharan and Rahman to sing Jana Gana Mana. I think it was an inspiring journey for all the talents involved. The beauty of the idea is so big that it brought people together. And we were the catalyst.

Today, we have done 35 renditions of Jana Gana Mana, 20 films and still it continues...

Today, 600 theatres across the country play the anthem before every movie. I have even seen people singing along.
It has been ten years since we did Vande Mataram. Today, it has become a benchmark for schools to choreograph patriotic songs. It has also become cool to say Vande Mataram today! That is the best compliment we have received.

The Incredible India campaign

We don't push ourselves to think of a patriotic idea. It's not a marketing strategy.

We have been doing the Incredible India campaign for the last three years. The campaign has won numerous awards in many countries. At the Davos economic forum, we have done a film showcasing India as an emerging country.
I feel every Indian is patriotic; we only have to evoke emotionally. I am proud that my name is associated with something truly Indian.

With just 3 days left for the launch of Dasavatharam, the latest addiction on what seems like one of the most hyped pre release events in Kamal's history.

Apart from the senior artists like Jackie chan, Asin, etc, the Chief Minister of Tamil nadu Mr. Karunanidhi, himself had participated in the audio release event that was held at the Nehru Indoor Stadium which was later telecasted by Kalaingnar TV.

Mr. Karunanidhi asked Kamal recently “Are all those people really you?” when he saw the trailer. According to some of the blogs Mr. Karunanidhi congratulated him with a hug and a kiss.

This film is begins with a story line starting from the 12th century. In this Kamal plays Nambi, a priest. Vaali(the Lyricist) with the help of Hariharan voice has described the character’s devotion very well.

The other roles that Kamal comes in are a Chinese man, an old lady, a CBI officer from Andhra Pradesh, an American, a Punjabi, a Scheduled Tribes’ leader, a leader from Afghanistan, George Bush and a role which looks like Kamal.

Its said that Kamal has taken a lot of effort to depict the George Bush character. He has watched a lot of videos to get the accent and tone right. Shruti, his daughter talked him through all this.

It was a magical evening. A full moon night, a cricket stadium full of music lovers and a programme

It was a magical evening. A full moon night, a cricket stadium full of music lovers and a programme full of talented performers and hit songs. Fans expected a lot from A. R. Rahman and the music maestro lived up to those expectations at A. R. Rahman – Live in Concert held at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday.

Starting with his recent Bollywood hits Masti Ki Pathshala, Jashn-e-Bahara and Rubaroo, Rahman took the audience on a wonderful musical journey that included his current hits and old favorites from Bollywood and South Indian films.
There was no time wasted in announcing songs or singers as the show moved seamlessly from one number to the next. And there was no need either for announcements because the audience recognized every number as soon as the first note was played and greeted every song with rapturous applause.

ENERGETIC

One could not help but admire Rahman's immense talent and versatility as the show moved from energetic dance tunes to deeply spiritual devotional numbers and rocking rap music to a soul stirring patriotic song.

Every performer, from established names like Hariharan, Chitra, Sadhana Sargam, Karthick, BlaaZe and Madhushree to Rahman's young discoveries Neeti Mohan, Naresh Iyer, Mohammad Aslam, Javed Ali and Benny Dayal, was impressive and deserved the applause they received from an extremely responsive audience.

The singers reached out to every section of the audience by smoothly switching between the Hindi and South Indian versions of songs and involving the audience in jugalbandis.

As usual Sivamani was amazing. Besides playing an array of percussion instruments, the famous drummer also showed the audience how he could produce music from everyday objects like a bottle of water and a suitcase in a fantastic solo performance.

The multi-tier stage, light effects, sound, orchestra and back-0up dancers were exceptionally good, enhancing the show without taking attention away from the music.

SOUL OF THE CONCERT

But the soul of the concert was Rahman himself. He was on stage throughout, playing the keyboard, joining in the choruses, sensing the mood of the audience, revving them up when he felt an ebb in energy - and singing some of his most popular numbers such as Dil Se, Tere Bina, Humma, Humma in Tamil and Pray For Me Brother in English.

One could feel his deep spirituality as he sang Khwaja Mere Khwaja on the harmonium, his head covered with a scarf.

And he had the entire audience on their feet for the finale number Vande Mataram, his melodious tribute to India.

A.R. Rahman, or Allah Rakha Rahman was actually born A.S. Dileep Kumar to a musically gifted Tamil family in Madras (Chennai) on January 6th 1967. While his father, K.A. Sekhar, was a composer and conductor in Malayalam movies, a young Rahman would often travel along side his father and attend the many studio sessions required of a composer. Interestingly, during one of those visits, musical director Sudarshanam Master observed 4 year old Rahman playing a tune on the harmonium. Even when the Master covered the harmonium keys with a cloth, Rahman played the tune again as if the keys were still uncovered. Impressed by what he was witnessing, Sudarshanam Master recommended for 4 year old Rahman to undergo studies as a musician, and soon after a young Dileep was receiving lessons from Dhanraj Master.

Although his young life was filled with promise and joy, much of that was cut short at the age of 9, at the time when Rahman's father died from a mysterious illness. Forced to support his three sisters and mother, he and his family first rented out all of his father's musicial equipment but when that was not enough, Rahman went further by the age of 11 by joining Illaiyaraja's troupe as a keyboard player.

At this point in time, and seeing the potential in her only son, Rahman's mother Kareema Begum encouraged her son to pursue music fulltime, and because of this, his education naturally suffered. Skipping school became a common occurance for Rahman, so much so that it forced the young musician to drop out of the prestigious Padma Seshadri Bai Bhavan to the Madras Christian College, to finally dropping out of school all together by the 11th grade. While out of school, Rahman stayed busy with his music endevours by accompanying Zakir Hussein and Kunakuddi Vaidyanathan on world tours, as well as playing on orchestras commanded by such individuals as M.S. Vishwanathan and Ramesh Naidu.

For the next 8-9 years of his life, Rahman would work with different composers and musical directors, and while each experience led to Rahman's understanding of musical compositions, Rahman had always felt that in order to make the greatest music, composers were probably under the influence of some drug or alcohol. Illaiyaraja changed his perceptions on those stereotypes: "Until then I thought you had to drink or take dope to be a good artist. But Illaiyaraja was making such beautiful music and leading a pure life. I was under the impression that if its music, whoever it is, they must have some bad habit. He [Illaiyaraja] proved that he could make music without any bad habits."

In 1988, tragedy struck Rahman's family again as one of his sisters became seriously ill, hovering close to death. After all medications and prayer services were deemed un-helpful, the family asked for the help of Pir Qadri, a religious muslim whom the family had sought at the time of Rahman's father's death. Through Qadri's prayers and blessings, Rahman's sister made an unbelievable full recovery, an experience which convinced Rahman and the entire family of the powers of Allah, and as a result, the entire family converted to Islam. No longer did he present himself as A.S. Dileep Kumar, but now went by the name of Allah Rakha Rahman, or A.R. Rahman: "As Dileep I had an inferiority complex. As A.R. Rahman I feel like I have been born again."

Through all of these experiences, A.R. Rahman built his musical expertise and understanding, as well as a fond understanding of life and religion. Although his early catelogue of works is impressive, it was not until 1991 that his musical genius was discovered. In 1991, Tamil move director Mani Ratnam took a chance on the young Rahman, who at that time was best known for a composition he had produced for a Leo Coffee commercial. After inviting Rahman to a studio session, it only took one listen to a Rahman track to convince Mani Ratman that A.R. Rahman was his man. After signing Rahman to produce the score for the film "Roja," the song "Tamizha Tamizha" became an instant Tamil hit in India, and launched the then 25 year old into stardom.

Of course A.R. Rahman had much more in-store for the world to witness when in 1998, Mani Ratnam employed Rahman again to compose the score for his first Hindi film "Dil Se." Although the film flopped and was unsuccessful in India, the title track "Dil Se," sung by Rahman himself, as well as his production for the hit "Chaiyya Chaiyya" was enough to bring movie-goers to the theaters. It only takes one listen to these two tracks to understand why A.R. Rahman is widely considered as one of the best musical composers to ever come out of India.

Of course, an entire book can be written on A.R. Rahman, however getting a small glimpse into the life of a legend is a humbling experience. Not only has A.R. Rahman received numerous awards and accolades, but his 2002 Broadway debut "Bombay Dreams" received a generous welcome as well. Throughout all of his accomplishments, A.R Rahman has completely transcended all cultural boundaries by his musical productions, compositions, and vocal performances, and never ceases to amaze the musical industry.

A.R. Rahman is currently on a US Tour entitled "The 3rd Dimension," which features Rahman, Sukhwinder Singh, Chitra, Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam, Sivamani, Blaaze, and others.

Postproduction and CG (computer graphics) work on Kamal Haasan's mag num opus Dasavadharam, which is directed by K. S. Ravikumar is taking place at a brisk pace in a closely guarded environment at a studio in Chennai under the able guidance of Hollywood experts.

DC managed to get a sneak peek of the 10 avatars being donned by Kamal in the film as well as the opening song of the film from a close source involved in the postproduction. Kamal's ten roles include that of an ordinary man, a traditional 12th century Vaishnavite called Rangaraja Nambi, a scientist, a 90-year old Brahmin lady who happens to be a dwarf, an eight foot tall giant, the U. S president George Bush, a sardarji (who is paired with Jayapradha), a dark skinned man from Thirunelveli, a Chinese martial arts expert and a white man who is a villain.

For the first time, Asin plays a dual role in this film. In one avatar, she plays an Iyengar lady draped in a traditional nine-yard saree opposite Kamal's Nambi character.Towards the end of the film, she appears as a modern girl paired opposite Kamal's character of the ordinary man.

Insiders, who got a glimpse of the song sequences of Kallai Mattum Paarthal Kadavul Theriyadhu, sung by Hariharan and set to music by Himesh Reshammiya could not stop rav ing about Kamal's dedication and the huge amount hard work that went into the film. The thematic song was picturised near the Ennore port and Utthandi on ECR in Chennai. An awe-inspiring set resembling a Vishnu temple was erected on the beach at the cost of Rs 3.5 crore.

According to the scene, in the 12th century, king Kulothunga Cholan of Cholamandalam (played by Napoleon) orders his men to throw into the sea, a deity of Lord Ranganathar and Rangaraja Nambi who is an ardent devotee of Vishnu, holds on to the idol.

Preparing for a shot, which appears before Kamal's immersion into the sea, the actor was reportedly hanging from a rooftop for around 15 days from 9 am to 6 pm.

"We felt speechless seeing the actor's energy levels and involvement," commented a unit hand present on location.

About 8,000 junior artistes dressed in costumes belonging to the period were used for this song, which was shot over 45 days.

Though producer Oscar Ravi was tightlipped about the entire proceedings, he said, "After the movie is released, Kamal Haasan's name will be etched in the history of world cinema for the next 100 years."

Kaash is an album by ghazal and playback singer Hariharan. It was released way back in 2000 by the now defunct Magnasound. It is now available through Bayshore Records. The album falls in a genre invented by Hariharan himself (he calls it Urdu Blues).

The album has 8 tracks with Kaash (the title track), Jhoom Le, Hum Ne Ek Shaam, Aandhiyaan and Ab Ke Baras being the best of the lot. It is an excellent album and is definitely worth buying.

I purely enjoyed A.R.Rahman's Concert on Star Plus which was telecasted last night. (The pic above was my fav for some reasons I don't know ;) But that was a photograph on the front page of Hindutan Times' weekend magazine a few months back.) So many dear voices echoed throughout the night. What a performance and what an involvement?! I am speechless. One sample is here.. The final performance to show the grandeur and dedication of the beloved singers.

Don't know why I had been totally off the ghazals for the last few months. Maybe the reason was that they no longer resided in my hard disk or even my iPod. But more importantly they are back !! Needless to say, now my room speakers are filling the spring air with the melodious voices of Jagjit & Chitra Singh and Hariharan. In my quest to make up for lost time, I scouted around the net for some new releases and found a new album called Shafaq Ke Rang, and I really liked three of the songs. They now feature regularly on my ghazal playlist. Now I literally sleep to the tune of ghazals and wake up to them too..... albeit both at times when the sun's presence is felt in the azure skies. Wonder how I had been out of the loop for so long. Maybe because there has been a recent spate of really good film songs churned out by the all too famous Bollywood industry or more importantly, a mere 1 gig is not enough to keep too many genres on the iPod which also doubles up as my car music player. Whatever be the reason, I am back to my cherished songs of eternal melody.... wonder when Kishore is going to call me back to his voice :)... but right now it's Jagjit singing

I love the melodic voice of Hariharan..

'Krishna Nee Begane Baaro' in Kannada means 'Oh God, Come back soon'.

The wonderful lyrics in this song goes as follows:

Darkness coming around,
And every body fighting with the brother
Every body wants control,
Don't hesitate to kill one-another

So come back as Jesus
Come back and save the world
Bless all the future of every boy and girl
Come back as Rama,
Forgive us for what we've done
Come back as Allah,
Come back as anyone

Religion is the reason,
The world is breaking now into pieces
Color of the people,
Keeps us locked in hate, please release us

So Come down and help us,
Save all the little ones
They need a teacher,
And you are the only one
We can rely on,
To build a better world
A world that's for children,
A world that's for everyone

Time is the healer, and time moves on
Time doesn't wait for any one
So, Tell me you'll be back
But that will take some time
I'm waiting

Come back as Jesus
Come back and save the world
We need a teacher,
and You are the only one
Come back as Rama
Forgive us for what we've done
Come back as Allah
Come back for every one.......

Govinda Bolo Hari Gopala Bolo
