I LOVE my job

I really, really, really love my job :-)

I'm "getting it" now. I don't know everything yet, obviously, but I'm getting closer to it. I'm asking far fewer questions about what certain drinks are and what glasses they go in etc, but that's not why I'm getting it. I'm getting the hang of the banter now, so customers don't really mind if I get it wrong because I'm doing it in such a charming way.

I have friends there at work - not just with the staff, but with the regulars too. I have a guy that I have a flirtation with, and I like watching out for him and the little flutter I get when he comes in. I can chat to Uncle Les (the guy I work with) easily, and he seems to like me now. I can clean up without Les constantly reminding me what to do. I can reccomend beers. The nights are seeming to sail by, and I go home with a big smile on my face.

I started work at 15, and now I'm 18. It's taken three years, but I've found a job I am absoloutely delighted with. That's not bad.

Extreme? Unfortunately, we are.

So I saw by way of John Gruber's Daring Fireball that there was an article from the Free Software Foundation going on about how the iPhone 3G is a prison, and pushing the OpenMoko FreeRunner phone as a phone that isn't so...prison-like.

Let it be said I normally support what the FSF stands for. But this article...sort of sucks.

Let me begin.

The Premise

iPhone completely blocks free software. Developers must pay a tax to Apple, who becomes the sole authority over what can and can't be on everyone's phones.

What? Developers only have to pay $99 for a license. This is to prevent any average joe from making a horrible app or even a virus for the iPhone. Consider that $99 really isn't that bad. And iPhone does NOT block free software. Developers set the price of their application, which can be free.

iPhone endorses and supports Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) technology.

Um? What? Just because the iPhone uses some DRM (FairPlay, which has been on the iTunes store for eons) doesn't mean he endorses it. In fact, I'm willing to wager you didn't read Jobs' "Thoughts on Music". Apple DOESN'T WANT to use DRM. The studios are making them use it as a condition of having their music on the iTS. Stop making it seem like the iPhone is out to enslave us all in DRM. Because it's not.

iPhone exposes your whereabouts and provides ways for others to track you without your knowledge.

...For one, this is added by 3rd party apps like Whirrl and the like. The iPhone doesn't do this by default, so stop faulting Apple for something that doesn't come standard. Sure, Maps supports GPS, but it doesn't broadcast your location to the world.

iPhone won't play patent- and DRM-free formats like Ogg Vorbis and Theora.

So what if Apple did include these...and said formats violated some patents? OH SHI- Apple's in some pretty hot water then. And Theora? I've never heard of it.

iPhone is not the only option. There are better alternatives on the horizon that respect your freedom, don't spy on you, play free media formats, and let you use free software -- like the FreeRunner.

This is where this ENTIRE article stinks of being promo material for the FreeRunner. Not that it's a bad phone and all, but come on, making some blasphemous claims to support a device is pretty shameful. Let's continue on...

We agree. A snake oil salesman not satisfied with his business of pushing proprietary software and Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) technology into your home, Jobs has set his sights on getting DRM and proprietary software into your pocket as well.

Oh boy. I already said this. Also, Gruber's rule applies here: If you attribute the actions of one company to an individual, you are likely a jackass or a hack.

There is a reason so much emphasis was put on the visual design of the iPhone. There is a reason that Apple is so concerned about unsightly seams that they won't even let you change the battery in your own phone.

Oh here we go again about the "OMG I CANNOT CHANGE THE BATTERY IN MY OWN PHONE" gripe.

Honestly, you don't need to change it. The iPhone battery can last around 5 hours on 3G, 10 hours on EDGE. You won't need to change it. On top of that, battery doors are easily lost, broken, and such. Plus, as an additional plus to the sealed battery design, the phone feels much more solid. Battery doors are flimsy and break easily.

Apple, through its marketing and visual design techniques, is manufacturing an illusion that merely buying an Apple makes you part of an alternative community.

Sigh. I'm not even going to justify this one.

Aren't we being a little extreme? What? We are? Oh crap.

Unfortunately, we are not. The extreme here is represented by Jobs and Apple. The iPhone is an attack on very old and fundamental values -- the value of people having control over their stuff rather than their stuff having control over them, the right to freely communicate and share with others, and the importance of privacy.

There we go with attributing the actions of Apple to Jobs. Get over it already. Stuff does NOT have control over you, okay? You choose what apps you want on your phone. You choose if you want to use 3G or EDGE on your iPhone. If you had control over none of these, I'd be with the FSF on this. But that clearly isn't the case.

It's also a tracking device, and like other proprietary GPS-enabled phones, can transmit your location without your knowledge.

NO NO NO. IT IS NOT.

For fuck's sake, it asks you if you want to let certain applications access the GPS. It does not beam your location anywhere without your consent. Stop. whining. over. nonexistent. problems.

The iPhone is broken, on purpose. It is in theory capable of running many different kinds of programs, but software applications and media will be limited via Apple's ironically named Digital Restrictions Management technology -- "FairPlay".

You've got it all wrong. AGAIN.

Fairplay is used to limit the amount of computers that can play back content. Said limitations do NOT apply to devices like iPods and iPhones. Fairplay DOES NOT limit what types of Applications will run on the iPhone. That's what Apple does.

FoulPlay

Apple's DRM system monitors your activities and tells you what you are and are not allowed to do. What you are not allowed to do is install any software that Apple doesn't like. This restriction prevents you from installing free software -- software whose authors want you to freely share, copy and modify their work.

Apple's DRM does NOT monitor your activities. For fuck's sake, it only keeps track of the computers that are registered to play back FairPlay-encoded files. Apple also has to use censorship, because, let's face it, the iPhone is one hot device. Some average joe could write a malicious app that would crash the entire phone or brick it.

Apple may be restrictive, but it's for a reason.

Fingerpointing

Jobs would have us believe that all of these restrictions are necessary. He nods and agrees when we complain about them, and says that he doesn't like them either. He claims that Apple is forced to include them for our own good -- for the safety of the whole telephone network, and to allow access to all the movies and music we want.

There you go again, attributing Apple's actions to Jobs.

The truth is, he doesn't like them. But consider this: AT&T is Apple's partner in this. They don't want their iPhone to wreck AT&T's network, so they have to impose limitation.

Also, as Jobs himself said, It's easier to lift restrictions than it is to impose them. Apple would rather start off having everything locked up, and slowly unlocking everything, than have everything open, and have to impose limits as time went on.

But it's been a year and a half since Jobs, under pressure from the public, spoke out strongly against DRM and in favor of freedom. With great hesitation, he allowed a handful of files to go DRM-free on iTunes, but kept in place the requirement that they be purchased using the proprietary, DRM-infected iTunes software. Since then, he has done absolutely nothing to act on those words. In his movie and video ventures, he has continued to push DRM. And now he's bringing it to mobile software applications as well. It's become clear that those words were a ploy to defuse opposition.

Since Jobs himself wrote that article, I'll give you a free pass on this one.

First: A lot more than a "handful" of files were un-DRMed.

Second: iTunes plays formats that aren't DRM. So "DRM-infected iTunes software" doesn't quite work.

Third: "Done nothing to act on those words"? What kind of cave are you living in? Apple has brought in iTunes Plus, initially at $1.29 for DRM-free files. They then lowered the price to $0.99. Sounds like they are acting on it to me.

We know Jobs is afraid of competition, and is manufacturing threats and excuses. This is simply a business decision, and it's a kind of business we shouldn't support. Jobs wants the iPhone to restrict you because he wants your money and increased control is a means to that -- he wants to take as much from you as possible, give you back as little as possible, and keep his costs at the absolute minimum. He's trying to make sure that nobody writes software for the iPhone to do things that he doesn't want the iPhone to be able to do -- such software might make FoulPlay less foul, play alternative media formats, show the user exactly what's being communicated from the phone to the people monitoring it, or even disable transmission of that information.

Good god, Gruber would he having a field day by now.

APPLE! JOBS IS ONLY ONE PERSON! GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE!

Jobs is not afraid of competition. He likes it. See Mac OS X vs. Windows. Jobs spits in the face of Windows all the time. He loves competition.

AGAIN: The iPhone does not really restrict you. It locks you to a carrier, yes, but that's more AT&T's fault than Apple's. Get your references straight.

And again: FairPlay is A FUCKING SYSTEM THAT KEEPS TRACK OF WHAT DEVICES ARE ALLOWED TO PLAY YOUR CONTENT. IT DOES NOT TRANSMIT PERSONAL INFORMATION OR LOCATION INFORMATION TO APPLE.

Get it straight. Seriously.

FSF's FreeRunner Sales Pitch

Fortunately, we will soon be able to have all the convenience of a mobile computer that also makes phone calls without selling our freedom to Apple, Microsoft, BlackBerry, or anyone else. The Neo FreeRunner is a promising free-software phone, being developed in cooperation with the same worldwide community responsible for the GNU/Linux operating system. These are creators who want to share their work and who want you and others to be able to do what they did -- build on the work of people who came before them to make new, empowering devices.

We know that Linux is about as user-friendly as...well. you get it. Linux was never able to catch on in the OS market because it has a STEEP learning curve. I doubt, unless the devs from Ubuntu hop on this one, that the FreeRunner has much chance outside the unix god market it caters to.

Jobs built on the work of people before him too, only his answer is to kick away the ladder and try to prevent anyone else from doing what he did. His customers are fighting back -- according to Apple in October 2007, over 250,000 of the 1.4 million iPhones sold were unlocked by their users. Rather than embracing this, Jobs thinks it should be stopped.

Once again...APPLE. not JOBS.

It has to be stopped in Apple's eyes because it'll piss off AT&T. Apple has to look like they are doing something to stem the tide of people taking iPhones off of AT&T's network.

We have a choice. The FreeRunner doesn't yet do as much as the iPhone and it's certainly not as pretty. But in terms of potential, the fact that it's supported by a worldwide community of people rather than a single greedy, dishonest and secretive entity puts it light-years ahead. We can trade our freedom and our money to get something flashy on the surface, or we can spend a little more money, keep our freedom, and support a better kind of business. If we want businesses to be ethical, we have to reward the ones that are. By not enriching companies that want to take away our freedom and by rewarding those that respect us, we will be helping to bring about a better future.

More FreeRunner pitching.

Really, the FreeRunner looks like it has a lot of potential, but this is totally the wrong way to market it. Taking cheap shots at the competition and bolstering your own product is really sort of sad. And making blasphemous claims to make your product look good is even worse.

The headlines all sound like everyone is so shocked that Brazilian Foreign Minister, Celso Amorim, made a comment which is true. He said that certain tactics employed by certain governments negotiating in the Doha trade round reminded him of the sort of things Nazis did. What's the big deal?

It's absolutely true.

Especially where he takes them to task for misrepresenting the talks and the ulterior motives many of the more industrial nations have in engaging in the talks. Contrary to what the headlines suggest and the official reaction of those retards who lead our country, I'm glad to hear someone in politics telling it like it is. Wish we had a few more of those sorts of politicians in our own country (and no, moonbats don't tell it like it is) to help Ron Paul out.

"Goebbels used to say if you repeat a lie several times it becomes a truth," Amorim said. And that is exactly one of the tools in the propaganda toolbox of all nations, including the United States' own political toolbox. In fact, George Bush's Presidency has pretty much been built upon that premise, as have the Clinton's careers. WMD's, blue dresses and airport snipers come to mind.

Are the WTO negotiators really that shocked at the accusation, or just the fact someone sees their tactics for what they are and called them on it? Our government and others are doing many things the Nazi regime once did, and have done the same or worse in the past. The recent revelation of the US military doing nothing and thereby condoning the machine-gunning of thousands of innocent civilian Koreans in the Korean War is merely one disgusting example of how our government hypocritically condones and allows atrocities and war crimes to occur...even AFTER using those same excuses to wage war on Germany.

What's shocking isn't that the Brazilian Foreign Minister made the accusations, but that more people don't know enough about politics and history to realize it is true that our government has agencies and politicians and workers in it every bit as corrupt or morally decrepit as any that served in the Nazi regime, and that they use the same tactics, and have perpetrated or condoned more than a fair share of evils of their own. Large industrial nations' governments are just more subtle in the way they persecute, kill, poison, imprison, destroy other nations, impose their will, take resources and enslave the masses.

Where it isn't so subtle is the terrible acting by those serving in governments.

Rome II: #10 - Illegal Immigrants

Illegal immigration resides fairly low on my overall list of concerns. Upon pondering various senior outrages I tend to run out of vitriol by the time I work myself down to those who are trying to better the lives of their families yet lack the proper processing paperwork.

There are large swaths of the U.S. population who take this issue very seriously though. The movement to make English the official language is quite popular, and several businesses across the country have made headlines by refusing to serve customers who attempt to order in a foreign language. The example that most readily springs to mind is the famous cheese-steak stand "Geno's Steaks" in Philadelphia that posted signs reading "This is America: When Ordering Speak English". This may prove to be an unrealistic expectation; as I don't believe that even the native born residents of Philadelphia actually speak English.

The most overt backlash against undocumented workers is usually a result of xenophobia and anti-Hispanic sentiment, but illegal immigration does pose some very real problems. Firstly the claim that immigrants only "take the jobs that Americans won't do" is not really accurate. It's more that they "take the jobs that Americans won't do for $2.25 an hour". If agricultural corporations were forced to provide legal wages they may find that there is interest from U.S. citizens after all. Heck, for $15 an hour I'd probably sign up to pick tomatoes; get a chance to work on my tan.

Another issue is that undocumented workers almost universally lack any form of health insurance, so they place a strain on the already underfunded public system.

Let it not be said however that no one derives a benefit from our country's lax enforcement policies. If the border was secured what would Lou Dobbs do for a living?

Of Duty and Dumb Ideas~Part 4~Germany

I'll get back to that man in part 3 later, cuz he was such a huge part of my whole tour of duty in Germany, that I'd end up talking about him too much.

What did I do in Germany except party you ask, yes, well, we all worked as paper pushers/desk jockeys/whatever name you have for it.

We updated the soldier's personal records up there in that little attic on the 4th floor. It was boring work. I belonged to a squad of about 8 to 10 folks who did records.

We did our job, and now and again, we had CQ (charge of quarters) duty. We had 2 on this job nightly, and if you were on, you had to stay up all night, make security checks, be there in case of trouble etc...

Then there was some duty called STAFF DUTY RUNNER. This duty was more complicated. It was 24 hours, and "runner" was pretty much a good description for it.

The duty officer basically told you what to do and you did it.

I remember one night i had this freakin' nightmarish duty. The misogynistic jerk on with me tells me in the middle of winter, "Go do Perimeter guard."(walk the fence around the base)

Hello??? 30 degrees out fella!

"Oh and also, let the Military Police in the gas station when they need gas."

This meant every few hours a patrol car would need me to unlock the huge chain and padlock to the gate with frozen fingers, wait while they pumped their gas and lock it shut behind them.

For heaven's sake mister!

That was total crap. All night. For duties such as this, we had medicine the next day.

It was called SHOPPING. We loved shopping as much as we loved CLUBBING.

Duty +Shopping+Clubbing= 0 zero sleep for 48 hours.

Wow. We loved Germany. Nothing like spending every dime you made working on partying and shopping.

As far as I know, the single soldiers of today haven't changed a bit either. I have my son, who is 23 now to compare to, and uh, let's just say, he's prolly just as foolish and young as I was.

Sorta a few weeks into being in Germany though, there was serious fatigue setting in.

It seemed i always needed to nap, when I hadn't before.

I also woke up one day to find a large painless knot on one side of my neck.

I went to sick call, and they did every test they could, until a quick thinking nurse ordered one more test~~

it was positive, for MONO.

Besides being really worried, I was now quarantined for 2 weeks.

My spleen was swollen to softball size. I was told to rest, because:

Moderate enlargement of the spleen occurs in about half of all mono cases. When it is enlarged for any reason, it extends down into the part of the abdomen that is not protected by the ribs and is susceptible to being ruptured (or torn) by trauma to the abdomen.

Although a ruptured spleen is not a common complication of mono, it is important to know that if and when it does occur, it is a life-threatening condition that requires emergency surgical intervention, because it causes profuse internal bleeding that will not stop on its own.

it's essential that you avoid certain activities until his spleen shrinks to its normal size as determined by an experienced healthcare professional (often a matter of weeks following a mono infection). Actions you should be restricted from doing:

roughhousing
contact sports of any kind (such as tackle football, wrestling)
bicycle or scooter riding, because of the risk of handlebar injuries to the abdomen
any activity that could result in a fall or direct blow to the abdomen
vigorous exercise of any sort
heavy lifting.

Here's how dumb Sweetiegirlz was, people.

Roughly a week into quarantine in my room, I suddenly got the party itch again and CLIMBED OUT of my 3 STORY barracks window and jumped down to the ground!

I think that might've caused a spleen rupture, I'm not sure, but my spleen feels like rupturing just thinking about how I tempted fate that night...

Besides risking umm....DEATH! I risked getting court martialed too, or losing a month's pay for disobeying a direct order.

How I escaped to the club unnoticed is beyond me, but i snuck back in through the front door, and no I did not climb back up!

I promise you that I did experience more culture than just partying, and I will get to those things next time. As it turns out, I wouldn't just have a little taste of Germany, It would become a matter of survival for me in more ways than one!

Well something to right now. Fu fu fu, ive been doing lots of stuff lately, most of it sleeping . I got to help my dad in his job some more so there's money for me ^_^...

Eh I'm bord and have nothing to do... my cousins are coming up though, that'll be a good change ^_^;. I am worried. All this stuff thats been going on with them, I don't think it will be a good idea..... oh well not my choice.

on to other things. I found an awsome magazine called.... ANIME INSIDER!!!! not exciting huh... Well if you like anime I bet you've already herd of it, but if not.

I do like NEW TYPE though but Anime insider is cheaper (at 5 bucks an issue) and has alot more on what's happening. NEW TYPE does have a lot of manga and comes with a DVD so it's your choice.

Being a good person will help you keep your job. + Republican senator making at least 100k, calls America a nation of whiners.

Being a nice person was the point that stands out in a John Tesh radio broadcast offering helpful tips on dieting, and life skill development. Eating an apple 5 minutes before a meal or other healthy appetizer will help your diet results. A regular planned snack at night was also shown to help your diet in a study.

John also talked about what empoyers and co-workers look for in other employees. Likeability was high on the list. If you do a good job; but, are a jerk. You better change your tactics and try to be a nice person. Employers and co-workers favor pleasant co- workers. Even if they have less skills.
