India pacer S Sreeshant should concentrate on cricket instead of fiddling his hand in off-field activities if he wants to continue to make a mark in cricket, says former India captain Kapil Dev.  Stating that Sreeshant was a very enterprising cricketer, Kapil said the young Kerala pacer alone would be responsible if his performance suffers because of his off-field activities.

"The boy should come back to cricket, otherwise he will be the sufferer and nobody else," Kapil said referring to his acting and singing ventures.  The country's only World Cup-winning captain said Sreeshant's aggression should be constructive and should be for his own good and for the team. "Aggression on the field is very good. But, that should help you deliver," Kapil said.

"You should perform and that is the bottom line," he said. On the criticism that cricket in the country was getting more encouragement than other sports, Kapil said corporates and media should focus more on the development of sports events other than cricket.

"Cricket will survive. I want the corporates to put money on other sports. That did not mean that cricket should be pulled down," he said.  On Indian Premier League and Indian Cricket League, Kapil said the people of the country would judge after watching both though he said IPL was a success terms of marketing. Kapil, also Brand Ambassador of West Bengal-based SRMB Udyog Ltd, was talking to reporters after signing an MOU between Kerala Small Industries Development Corporation Ltd and SRMB.

Welcoming the proposed new rules of BCCI for appointing selectors, Kapil Dev said BCCI's move would do good to the game.'That will bring back cricketers to cricket", he said.  On his casino business venture, Kapil Dev said he was not prepared to go for such ventures unless people of the place, where it was put up, were matured enough to accept such business ventures.  Kapil Dev came down heavily on the frequent hartals that disrupt the normal life of people in Kerala and said it would only discourage investors from coming to the state. "I will invest in Kerala, if you guarantee that there will not be any hartals in the state", Kapil Dev said in the presence of State Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem.

Referring to Kareem's suggestion for Kapil Dev to become the complimentary Ambassador of Kerala, Kapil Dev said south India, especially Kerala, has always attracted him and his family.  The MOU was for marketing the products of SRMB through SIDCO's 140 outlets across the state. The target was to sell Rs.150 crore of materials in the next 12 months, which would earn a revenue of approximately Rs.60 lakh to Kerala government.

Let’s just look at some of the turmoil’s that have erupted:

Domestic players in India found at the receiving end: League cricket was formulated to uplift the economic & social status of the domestic Indian player. However one set of players playing with the ICL face an unjustified ban. I guess it is for the players as a united front (both those with the ICL & BCCI contract), that need to question the justification of the ban. The BCCI cannot justify the ban on basis of maintaining its monopoly and therefore are obliged to answer the players and the general public the real reason of the ban on the ICL players.

So why does the BCCI get away with Murder?

The answer lies that the players are not united. The onus lies on stalwarts like Tendulkar, Kumble, Dravid & Ganguly to leverage their illustrious position and encompass the entire Indian players’ fraternity. The fact that India does not have a player union is the reason for the BCCI issuing diktats. I would be interested to know what Tendulkar & co feel about the ICL and its players? Do they feel the ban is justified?

I guess the players need to unite not only for the ICL cause but for the larger picture; it is not distant memory when the BCCI abandoned its support to the Indian players after the 2007 world cup fiasco.  When the going is good the BCCI has supported its players, but the problem arises when the chips are down and any professional player is aware that things can not be always rosy in a cricketer’s career, therefore they need to unite so that the next time the chips are down they have their own fraternity backing them.

It is only the players who bear the brunt:

The IPL proposed champions cup has been in the news due to all the wrong reasons, especially with the rich representation of the ICL players across the county teams. The interesting fact arising is that the players face a ban but that does not hold true for officials.

How else can one explain the smooth transition of Shishir Hatangadi from ICL to IPL and now on the periphery of becoming a national selector?

This is an open reminder to all the players especially the stalwarts Like Kumble Shastri & Gavaskar that players and officials are not treated on basis of the same yardstick.

Hopefully Kumble & Co will encompass the entire Indian cricketer’s fraternity to resolve the ICL issue. It would also be interesting to see if the media posses this question to these stalwarts. After all if West Indies cricket board can foresee the benefit of Stanford and his resources why can’t the BCCI see the positive impact of Kapil and his ICL fraternity?

India entered the 1983 World Cup with just two inconspicuous victories against minnows East Africa in the preceding two editions in 1975 and '79. It was enough for cricket experts around the world not to take India seriously.

Famous Cricket historian David Edward Frith, the founder-editor of Wisden Cricket Monthly, went to the extreme saying the teams like India should not be allowed to compete in a prestigious event like the World Cup.

The English writer for good measure declared that if India lifts the World Cup, he would eat his words. Little did Frith realise that his words would fire the underdogs and boomerang on him.

A thorough professional that he was, David kept his promise by swallowing his magazine article, washing it down with wine. The September edition of Wisden magazine that year carried a photograph of David with his own article clenched between his teeth. The caption read 'India made me eat my words'.

The man who reminded David of his promise was P.R. Mansingh, the manager of the team. In fact, he was all alone managing everything. Today, there is a posse of men accompanying the team performing various chores.

Mansingh recalls that incident with mischievous glint in his eye.

'It was a very nasty piece he (David) wrote about the Indian team in the June issue of his magazine. The piece was a curtain raiser and it said that the Indian team had no standard and such teams should not be playing in the World Cup. It devalues the tournament,' Mansingh told IANS going down memory lane.

'Back home after winning the World Cup I wrote to him: 'Now what do you have to say Mr David?'

'I was surprised when I opened the September issue of Wisden. It carried my letter and a photograph of David with a piece of paper in his mouth with the caption 'India made me eat my words'.

Mansingh said one reason why India won the world cup was because no-one expected them to win.

'I remember when we left India there was no fanfare. Nobody gave us a chance. There was no expectation from people and there was no pressure as such on the team.'

Man, as he is affectionately called by his friends and the players, said it was a 'happy bunch' who played with unbridled joy and pride, enjoying each other's success.

'The camaraderie of the team stood out for me. We were a well-knit family. Every player would encourage others and revel in their success. There were no ego hassles and no differences among players. The team spirit was at its best in that bunch.'

'Even when we won the Cup, we didn't realise the enormity of what we did. It took quite a while to sink in because we made winning a habit in the tournament and winning the final looked like winning yet another match.'

Mansingh said: 'Only when we landed in India and saw the huge reception the players got that we realised that we made the country proud.'

Mansingh remembers the only time when he got emotional.

'After coming back to India the team was supposed to meet the prime minister, president and other dignitaries. I was briefing the team about the visit in the hotel room when Kapil came and asked me to leave the team alone for a minute as they wanted to discuss certain things.

'I was part of every team meeting and dressing room discussion and suddenly I was taken aback to hear Kapil's words. I came out and got emotional, but moments later Kapil came to me and said 'Man, the team wants you at every discussion and meeting, even though the World Cup is over'.

'Later I got to know that the captain was just making sure if anybody had any reservation about my presence. And the team unanimously wanted me there. I was touched by their affection.'

Sunil Gavaskar carried the ball which was used during the world cup, though its autographs had faded, the shine still remains. We can surely expect the team members get a bit emotional and Kapil Dev kept up our expectations by making his speech while others were recalling the glorious past.

My heartiest congrats to the team which did a magic, a wonder, a national pride !! We should expect our youngsters to come up not just not playing for money for the country. Cricket in our country has become a money show and the recent IPL showed how our players were auctioned.

Besides I would also like to showcase the pathetic situation of other sports of India. Our Hockey Team, which has even won a gold medal in Olympics failed to qualify for the Olympics this time. KPS Gill is the person most responsible for the mess, he humiliated all the players without any shame. He should be even thrown out of the country. It is due to people like KPS Gill, our countrymen dont send their children to sports fearing Gill is ready to use everyone for his personal advantages. Down you! KPS Gill. You spoilt the country's national sport and dont have the guts to admit it. Now thanks that Suresh Kalmadi has dissolved Indian Hockey Federation, now even the spirits of deceased Indian hockey players may lie in peace.

So now this post is about a Cricketer who belongs to the second category, none other than the Great Indian World Cup winning hero, "Kapil Dev", nobody in his sane mind would argue the fact that Mr. Kapil Dev Nikhanj was one of the best allrounder in his prime time and is arguably one of the best cricketer India has ever produced ( though I would say unarguably it is none other than Sachin but thats a matter of another strata), So i was coming to the greatness of the great man and as many people know that he was the record holder for maximum wickets until a gentleman by the name of Courtney Walsh grabbed it from him. Thing is I havent seen much of his cricket as he retired in 1994 and I started watching cricket in 1996 but there are some facts about him which don't the later part of his career in bright light. For one, a fact is he got 250 of those wickets(251 to be exact) in the first five years of his career, that is from 78-83 and he was often accused of playing just to get the record but this is also not the main thing bothering me.

The main point of this post is his life after retirement, he is and will always be respected for his cricketing skills but if there is one man who has excelled in always making a fool out of himself is this particular great. Two images which always come to my mind when I think of Kapil Dev, one if ofcourse the young lad of 24 having a dazzling white smile and holding the Cricket World Cup trophy in his hand and the other is of a middle aged man crying in front of the whole world when questioned about his morality. Come on man you can expect an immature kid like Sreesanth to cry like a baby whose lollipo has been taken away but not a man who is been there, done that types.

But my dear friends, all this was past, the newest controversy which includes him is that supposedly a mural of the guy was removed from the PCA Stadium at Mohali and the day I read about this incident here, I was quite hurt at the supposed behaviour of BCCI, agreed he helped in starting ICL, but he is not a convict for God's sake and he has his achievements which demanded that the mural which was there shouldnt have been removed from the place. As the news gathered some storm and everybody is getting to know about the fact so here we have Kapil Dev back again in the limelight.

The major tihng which surprises me is that a player of his stature whom everybody knows in this country is ruffled by such a small thing. Somehow he doesnt give you the sense of being a big person, he is still at the level of petty level who keep getting miffed by the actions of these petty people. He as one of the great cricketers of India souldnt have cared two hoots about things like this. He should have continued with his usual life, the way it was going on but he had to go to media had to create a "tamasha" and do everything in his power to make this as big an issue as possible.

One thing I am still not clear is what he wants. Cricinfo says that he just wants his memorabilia back from them which is not such a bad thing but this oucld have been done  in a more dignified manner and without involving the media into this. Another thing which is being shown in the news channels is that he wants the mural to be reinstated, if this is the case then I have no words to say about the greatness of such a person and would just say that rarely you will find such limelight hogging humbugs. Though I am still trying to be on the positive side and believing what is written in Cricinfo and not going with what is being shown in the news. Hope somebody who has TV can clarify what exactly the issue is,

Six winners from the India IRIS national fair were selected to represent at Intel ISEF.

Out of the 6 teams, 4 were from Tier-2/3 cities like Varanasi, Rajkot, Mandya, Nagpur and two from Tier-1 city Mumbai & Bangalore respectively.

In India this is a wonderful opportunity for any student who has great ideas and want to showcase it to international level.

Straight out of Prakash Mehra Movies of the 70’s and 80’s the IPL-ICL rivalry is one of the biggest rivalries between two brothers in India, after the Ambani’s. At the end of the day if you count the lucre involved it adds up to around 10,000 crores which approves it to be the biggest sports rivalry till date. Both of them are brothers because of being almost similar and belonging to the same game. The point though that can be raised is one of them seems to be the legitimate child of official cricket and the other illegitimate since the treatment meted out to it is almost step brotherly. But as it happens across fictional stories across cultures the step brother has now benchmarked it very well.

If we look at how ICL has positioned itself in the minds of cricket fans you will find that the game that starts at 6 in the evening has better TRP’s than most other things. In fact the last report that I saw was it had beaten the Chennai test in the TRP race. All this after the BCCI tried all weapons it had in its armoury to kill it even before its inception. In fact Niranjan Shah the BCCI secretary once called it “Veterans cricket with a change”.

The kind of money involved has come as no surprise in this cricket-mad part of the world. If you put this kind of money in a Swiss bank the interest would be enough to feed the entire population of India.

The BCCI does not seem to realise that the stronger the ICL is the better the foundation for the IPL will be. The ICL has great competitive cricket and star players who could have done wonders in the IPL.

Just imagine Kolkata Knight Riders playing against Lahore Badshahs in a jam-packed Eden Gardens. This cricket war between ICL and IPL is going nowhere.

Kapil Dev, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Madan Lal and other stars that brought cricket glory for India in the 1983 World Cup have been sidelined.

People like Kapil Paaji, who has devoted his life to cricket, are saying that a few bundles of lucre is taking away the zeal to develop players for the country, and is malicious. Mr. Modi says the IPL is about taking the game to a different level (one only he can define).

What will happen to the future of players like Ambati Rayudu, who was hailed as the next Sachin Tendulkar? There are many young stars in their teens. What will happen to their careers in mainstream cricket as the BCCI does not even recognise these guys for selection since they are playing in a rebel league? The Pakistan team in the ICL looks stronger than their national team.
The game should not lose out to unfair business strategies adopted by the masters of the game. Sport is for enjoyment and commercialising it does not help its cause. As such, the IPL and the ICL should cooperate and not get involved in a war of words.

44 நாள்களில் மொத்தம் 59 ஆட்டங்கள் நடைபெற உள்ளன. 8 அணிகள் அப் போட்டியில் விளையாட உள்ளன. மும்பை, பெங்களூரு, ஹைதராபாத், சென்னை, கோல்கத்தா, தில்லி, மொஹாலி, ஜெய்ப்பூர் என ஒவ்வொரு அணிக்கும் இந்தியாவில் உள்ள முக்கிய நகரங்களின் பெயர்கள் வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

ஏலம்:

இதற்கிடையே அந்த அணிகளை யார் வேண்டுமானாலும் விலைக்கு வாங்கி, தங்களை விளம்பரப்படுத்திக் கொள்ளலாம் எனவும், குறைந்தபட்சமாக ரூ. 200 கோடி தரவேண்டும் எனவும் விலை நிர்ணயம் செய்தது பிசிசிஐ. டெண்டர் மூலம் அதற்கான தேர்வு நடைபெற்றது.

ஆனால், எதிர்பார்த்ததற்கும் மேலாக ஏலம் மூலம் கோடிகளைச் சேர்த்துள்ளது இந்திய வாரியம்.

உரிமை பெற்றவர்களது பெயர்களை, இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் வாரியத்தின் துணைத் தலைவர் லலித் மோடி மும்பையில் வியாழக்கிழமை அறிவித்தார்.

மும்பை அணிக்கு ரூ 436 கோடி:

அதிகபட்சமாக, மும்பை அணி ரூ. 436 கோடிக்கு விலை போனது. ரிலையன்ஸ் அதிபர் முகேஷ் அம்பானி அதை வாங்கியுள்ளார்.

அடுத்து, பெங்களூரு அணியை ரூ. 435 கோடி கொடுத்து விலைக்கு வாங்கியுள்ளார் மதுபான தயாரிப்பில் முன்னிலை வகிக்கும் விஜய் மல்லையா.

ஹைதராபாத் அணியை ரூ. 419 கோடிக்கு டெக்கான் கிரானிக்கல் நிறுவனமும், சென்னை அணியை ரூ. 354 கோடிக்கு இந்தியா சிமெண்ட்ஸ் நிறுவனமும் வாங்கியுள்ளன.

ஷாருக்கான்:

கோல்கத்தா அணியை, ஜுஹி சாவ்லா, ஜெய் மேத்தா ஆகியோருடன் இணைந்து ரூ. 312 கோடிக்கு பாலிவுட் நட்சத்திரம் ஷாருக்கான் வாங்கியுள்ளார்.

மற்றொரு நடிகை பிரித்தி ஜிந்தா, தனது காதலர் நெஸ் வாடியாவுடன் சேர்ந்து மொஹாலி அணியை ரூ. 296 கோடிக்கு உரிமை பெற்றுள்ளார்.

தில்லி அணியை ரூ. 328 கோடிக்கு ஜி.எம்.ஆர். ஹோல்டிங்ஸ் நிறுவனமும், ஜெய்ப்பூர் அணியை ரூ. 261 கோடிக்கு எமர்ஜிங் மீடியா நிறுவனமும் பெற்றுள்ளன.

ஐசிஐசிஐ, சஹாரா, ஃபியூச்சர்ஸ் குழுமம் ஆகிய பெரும் நிறுவனங்களின் டெண்டர் நிராகரிக்கப்பட்டதாக மோடி தெரிவித்தார்.

இந்த ஏலத்தால் மொத்தம் ரூ. 7 ஆயிரம் கோடிவரை இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் வாரியத்துக்கு வருமானம் கிடைத்துள்ளது.

தவிர 80 வீரர்கள் இப் போட்டிக்காக ஒப்பந்தம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளனர். அவர்களையும் விலைக்கு வாங்குவோர் வாங்கிக் கொள்ளலாம். அதற்கான ஏலம் விரைவில் நடைபெறும் என அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதிலும் ஏகப்பட்ட கோடிகள் பிசிசிஐ-க்கு கிடைக்கும்.

தீவிர கண்காணிப்பு:

இதுவரை இல்லாத அளவு ஆயிரக்கணக்கான கோடிகளில் ஐபிஎல் கிரிக்கெட் போட்டி நடைபெற உள்ளதால், சூதாட்டம் தலைவிரித்தாடலாம் என்ற சர்ச்சை வலுத்துள்ளது.

சர்வதேச கிரிக்கெட் வாரியத்தின் ஊக்கமருந்து தடுப்பு பிரிவும், லஞ்ச ஒழிப்பு பிரிவும் தீவிரமாகக் கண்காணிக்க உள்ளனர் என்ற அறிவிப்பும் வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

1. உல்மர் மரணம்

முன்னாள் இங்கிலாந்து வீரரும், பாகிஸ் தான் பயிற்சியாளருமான பாப் உல்மர், மார்ச் 18 ம் தேதி கிங்ஸ்டனில் உள்ள ஓட்டலில் மர்மமான முறையில் மரணமடைந்தார். இவரது மரணம் கிரிக்கெட் உலகில் பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியது.

2. முடி சூடா மன்னன்

உள்ளூரில் சூரப்புலிகள் என்பதை இந்திய அணி மீண்டும் ஒரு முறை நிரூபித்தது. வெஸ்ட் இண்டீசுக்கு எதிராக நடந்த ஒரு நாள் தொடரை 31 என்ற கணக்கில் கைப்பற்றி அசத்தியது. வதோதராவில் நடந்த நான்காவது போட்டியில் 160 ரன்கள் வித்தியாசத்தில் வென்றது. கோப்பையுடன் டிராவிட்.

இந்தியாவுக்கு எதிரான வதோதரா போட்டியில் ஆஸ்திரேலிய அணியின் கறுப்பு இன வீரரான சைமண்ட்சை "குரங்கு' என ரசிகர்கள் கேலி செய்ததாக புகார் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது. அடுத்து நடந்த நாக்பூர் போட்டியிலும் ரசிகர்களின் கேலி தொடர, கிரிக்கெட்டில் மீண்டும் இனவெறி சர்ச்சை வெடித்தது.

6. முதன் முறையாக...

அயர்லாந்தில் நடந்த தென் ஆப்ரிக்காவுக்கு எதிரான ஒரு நாள் தொடரை இந்தியா 21 என வென்று, கோப்பை கைப்பற்றியது. இதன்மூலம் அன்னிய மண்ணில் தென் ஆப்ரிக்காவுக்கு எதிரான தொடரை முதன் முறையாக வென்று சாதித்தது. கோப்பையுடன் உற்சாக "போஸ்' கொடுக்கும் இந்திய வீரர்கள்.

7. உயரிய விருது

இந்திய துப்பாக்கி சுடுதல் வீரர் மானவ்ஜித் சிங் சாந்து 2006ம் ஆண்டு நடந்த உலக துப்பாக்கி சுடுதல் சாம்பியன்ஷிப்பில் தங்கம் வென்று அசத்தினார். இவரை கவுரவிக்கும் வகையில் 200607ம் ஆண்டுக்கான கேல் ரத்னா விருது வழங்கப்பட்டது. ஜனாதிபதி பிரதிபா பாட்டீலிடம் பதக்கத்தை பெற்றுக் கொள்ளும் மானவ்ஜித்.

8. கும்ளே சதம்

ஓவல் டெஸ்டில் பிரமாதமாக பேட் செய்த கும்ளே முதல் சதம் கடந்து அசத்தினார். தலைசிறந்த பேட்ஸ்மேனை போல் விளையாடிய இவர் 110 ரன்கள் எடுத்து டெஸ்ட் அரங்கில் 500 விக்கெட்டுக்கு மேல் வீழ்த்தியவர்கள் வரிசையில் சதம் கடந்த முதல் வீரர் என்ற சாதனை படைத்தார்.

9. விடைபெற்றார் ஜோன்ஸ்

ஊக்கமருந்து பயன்படுத்தியதை ஒப்புக்கொண்ட அமெரிக்க தடகள வீராங்கனை மரியன் ஜோன்ஸ் அதற்காக அமெரிக்க மக்களிடமும் தனது ரசிகர்களிடமும் மன்னிப்பு கேட்டார். சர்வதேச போட்டிகளிலிருந்து ஓய்வு பெறுவதாக அறிவித்தார்.

10. தங்க மங்கை

பெண்கள் செஸ் அரங்கில் இந்திய வீராங்கனை கோனெரு ஹம்பியின் ஆதிக்கம் தொடர்ந்தது. மக்காவ் நகரில் 22 நாடுகள் பங்கேற்ற இரண்டாவது ஆசிய உள்ளரங்கு செஸ் போட்டிகள் நடந்தன. இதில் உலகின் "நம்பர்2' வீராங்கனையான ஹம்பி தங்கம் வென்று நாட்டுக்கு பெருமை தேடி தந்தார்.

11. ஹாக்கியில் கலக்கல்

சென்னையில் நடந்த ஆசிய கோப்பை ஹாக்கி தொடரின் இறுதிப் போட்டியில் இந்திய அணி, கொரியாவை 72 என்ற கோல் கணக்கில் எளிதாக வென்று, கோப்பை கைப்பற்றியது. தேசிய விளையாட்டான ஹாக்கியில் கோப்பை வென்ற உற்சாகத்தில் "போஸ்' கொடுக்கும் இந்திய வீரர்கள்.

12. சென்னை சூப்பர்ஸ்டார்ஸ்

அரியானா மாநிலம் பஞ்சகுலாவில் ஐ.சி.எல்., அமைப்பு நடத்திய "டுவென்டி20' தொடர் வெற்றிகரமாக முடிந்தது. இறுதிப் போட்டியில் சென்னை சூப்பர்ஸ்டார்ஸ் அணி 12 ரன்கள் வித்தியாசத்தில் சண்டிகர் லயன்சை வீழ்த்தி கோப்பை வென்றது. மகிழ்ச்சியில் சென்னை சூப்பர்ஸ்டார்ஸ் அணியினர்.

"Unassuming and determinedly low key, Graham Ford ascended gradually to the position of South African coach, by-passing several bigger and more familiar names along the way. A competent all-round sportsman, Ford is a former provincial tennis champion, has provincial colours for football and is a qualified rugby union referee to go with his cricketing credentials. As a player, Ford had an eight-year first-class career in the Natal B team during the 1980s, but as a coach he moved steadily through the ranks, from the University of the Natal team, through the Natal Colts side to become senior Natal coach in 1992. He was the first to admit that he was fortunate with Natal in having Malcolm Marshall and Clive Rice on hand to help him guide a crop of outstanding young players which included Shaun Pollock, Jonty Rhodes, Lance Klusener, Neil Johnson, Dale Benkenstein and Errol Stewart.
