I’m new to Collective Soul, only having hear their ‘Disciplined Breakdown’ album p

I'm new to Collective Soul, only having hear their 'Disciplined Breakdown' album previously. This new album is just as Ed Roland describes it; it's a love album.

On first listen, you'd brush some of the songs off as too simplistic, ballads, or just pure radio edit versions, but if you listen again; to the lyrics, to the thoughts behind the words, and to the depth and overlay of the instruments the band is playing, you begin to realize how good this band really is.

The album starts out strong with 'New Vibration'; a rocking tune that gets the blood pumping and toes tapping.

'What Can I Give You' is a love song from lead singer Ed Roland to his wife and it's solid without being sappy or syprupy.

'Never Here Alone' has Roland singing about his deceased father but although it starts out somewhat sad, it ends with hope; "I'm starting back where love begins, Gonna get me those blue skies, those blue skies again"

'Bearing Witness' has mixes of spiritual and personal elements, and what I get from the song is that he's head over heels in love with his wife, and is bearing witness to that love by keeping his marriage vows pure while he's away on tour. There are other elements in this song, but its a definite love song and a public declaration I think. It's my favorite song on the album.

'All That I Know' and 'Hollywood' are the two most radio friendly tunes on the album. 'All that I know' is hip, pop, and makes you want to sing along. 'Hollywood' is the one song that doesn't seem to fit on this album, especially if you view the entire album as a testiment to love and relationships.

'I Dont Need Anymore Friends' is guitarist Joel Kosche's first foray into lead singer and he has a fantastic voice. It's strong and melodic and he needs to sing more often!

'Good Morning After All' is a bittersweet song. It's a testiment to Ed and brother Dean's mother, and the daily struggles she faced after the death of her spouse. They lost a father, but she lost a husband. It's a hopeful song too though - as you listen to the lyrics it shows how their mother still had/has her faith and the will to carry on. It's also a song of respect - the respect Ed has for his mother, and how he sees her as a person, not just his mom.

'Persuasion of You' is my least favorite song off the album, mainly due to the sound of it, and 'Georgia Girl' is a bluesy sounding tune that you have to listen to more than once to find the message.

The album ends (fittingly I thought) with 'Adored.' It's almost totally accoustic; just the singer and a guitar or two. In it, Ed gives recognition to the fact that he has a good life with people that love him, speaks about not taking anything for granted, and how the love of his life keeps his head screwed on straight by telling him to count his blessings when he feels the world crushing in on him.

This entire album is a glimpse into the heart and mind of Ed, and to a lesser degree the rest of the band. On the surface it's a pop album and people will get some great tunes from it. Look a little deeper and you will come away with a sense of hope and joy and realizing that this band is anything but ordinary.

So, I’m going to share a deep dark secret of mine that not even most of my friends know – I have

So, I’m going to share a deep dark secret of mine that not even most of my friends know – I have terrible taste in music. By terrible taste in music, I mean that I will listen to just about anything and still enjoy it. Well, minus hardcore metal and old country, but that’s an entirely different subject.

I live in a city where just about every other person on the street is into “indie” and obscure bands that have played one show in a cave somewhere, but who are still “genius”. In truth, my problem is that I’m lazy and I don’t feel like going to seek out spectacular music. I love music, and I really couldn’t live without it, but I’m the type that’s willing to settle. I’m ok with liking a band that people know the name of. It’s cool. This doesn’t actually stop me from carefully shielding my ipod screen on the bus though.

But one genre of music that I feel particularly guilty about – guilty enough to hide it from my family and friends – has to be that expansive arena called … The Love Song. Yep, love songs. Open Arms, I Will Always Love You, Kiss Me…all of it. Corny phrases like “…Your kisses are so wonderful/My love, you always will be…” and “Wise men say, ‘Only fools rush in’…But I can’t help falling in love with you…” do not bother me. In fact, I relish them.

But honestly, I’m starting to wonder a little bit about the future of the love song. Most of the songs in the last few years range just from lukewarm love to “Well, I sort of like you, I guess,” but there are some…that are just plain creepy. Masochism, soul stealing…well, let’s just go straight to the examples. (You know, the ones I picked and took out of context to support my point).

1. Ryan Cabrera – True

I won’t talk,
I won’t breath,
I won’t move till you finally see
that you belong with me.

So this song is on the milder side; there are no threats of death or violence. Rather, he’s basically just saying he’s going to throw a tantrum at you until you agree to date him. Look closely at the lyrics, and they read instead, “I’m going to give you the silent treatment and I’m going to HOLD MY BREATH until you agree to go out with me. Seriously, do you want to be responsible for having killed a man? Do you? What? Don’t believe me? Ok, here I go—“

Someone should tell him you can’t kill yourself by just holding your breath. Oh well.

2. Leona Lewis – Bleeding Love

Oh they find it hard to believe
I'll be wearing these scars
For everyone to see

But I don't care what they say
I'm in love with you
They try to pull me away
But they don't know the truth
My heart's crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
You cut me open and I

Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love

Uh, ok. This was apparently the number one most requested song of the day today, which kind of confuses me. I’m not sure if I’m alone in this, but this sounds like the national anthem of domestic violence. In my mind, I see women sitting by the radio stroking their new bruises, smiling just a little bit. I see some guy out in the woods with a refrigerator full of bodies calling in, “Ah, hey thar, I wuz hopin to herr sumthin to git me an’a girls in tha raight kinda mood. Hows bout dat one song, bout the gir’ whos’a bleedin an’all dat?”

That last part might just be me. I saw The Strangers last weekend, remember.

3. Jesse McCartney – Beautiful Soul

I don’t want another pretty face,
I don’t want just anyone to hold,
I don’t want my love to go to waste,
I want you and your beautiful soul.
You’re the one I want to chase,
you’re the one I want to hold.
I won’t let another minute go to waste,
I want you and your beautiful soul.

Now, I’m not really sure what your first thoughts were upon actually reading those lyrics, but here were mine:

Can you say C-R-E-E-P-Y?

The first song’s lyrics just come off as kind of desperate and sad, but the second one…you…want my beautiful soul? Wait, what?

I’m not sure about you guys, but I’m pretty sure the only times I’d be willing to give up my soul to anyone would be to save myself from eternal damnation in hell for skipping out on the tip at that one restaurant, or possibly to the ice cream truck guy if it’s a really hot day, and really only if there aren’t any ATMs around.

4. Finger Eleven – Paralyzer

I hold on so nervously
To me and my drink
I wish it was cooling me
But so far, has not been good
It’s been shitty
And I feel awkward, as I should
This club has got to be
The most pretentious thing
Since I thought you and me
Well I am imagining
A dark lit place
Or your place or my place

Ok, so I realize this isn’t a love song, but it’s close enough. I’m including it because the lyrics fucking piss me off. If you hate the place, don’t GO THERE DIPSHIT.

I’m not sure I like where our love songs are heading, honestly. It seems like almost all of the songs I see on tv lately have to do with breaking up, and moving on, or some sort of yearning, one sided and unrequited love song. And then there’s that whole other genre of bitches and hos, but I’m not going to count those as love songs. You can’t make me.

I don’t know, I guess what I’m wondering is: Is this reflecting on changes in our own culture? Are we becoming more desperate? Sad? Cold? More idealistic? Less idealistic? More importantly, is this a bad reflection on ME, as a member of this generation?

Our generation is so focused on instant gratification, people get divorces and break up and have huge fights at the drop of a hat. In addition to that, we have on the other side the lonely and completely hopeless idiots that love the idea of love so much, they can’t get it together enough to actually do anything about it other than pine away in the depths of their room, only to post those god damn “Nice Guys Finish Last” articles and poems when they get rejected. I guess I just can’t understand the appeal of these songs for anyone other than people who have recently been rejected, or had their heart broken in some way.

I think there’s a good chance I’m just getting irritated because I hate Jesse McCartney, but I could be wrong. I can tell that I’m going to have to listen to some music to blow off all this steam.

…God dammit, ok, maybe not.

I love melancholic songs. I love how my heart continuous to hum even after the lines have ended. It is said that the best love songs are those which tells of pain and loss and moving on. Is it because people tend to relate more to pain than joy? To loss than celebration? Perhaps. But isn't that kind of sad?

But maybe it's because pain has it's way of reminding us that we are humans after all. Paolo Coelho wrote once that Pain is an affirmation of life. It reminds us to feel. It allows us to be human. It pulls on our strings and shows us a stage in which we realized that we can also be unmindful puppets. That when deep pain rules us we forget that we have limbs able to support us and we succumb to the feeling for our actions, like puppets manned by a phantom's hand. Yes, pain, the great equalizer.

Another J sang me a song a month ago during his Singapore stop in his world tour. He is best when it comes to sadness. He toured the world playing sad love songs. And people can't get enough of it.

And this one is my favorite. Listening to him sang this live is enough for the amount that I've paid for the tickets. hehe

And just to make it official, (for lack of a better word) and at the risk of sounding morbid, I want this to be played at my funeral.

Crazy but yes, note this down as one of my dying wish. But God forbid, I'm not dying, just not yet ;) (plan pa nako mutubo hehehe)

Ani Difranco is well known for her fiesty, feminist lyrics. I want to look at some of her music and her 'love songs', comparing them to a few of my favourite Bob Dylan love songs. Both Dylan and Difranco have at various times been regarded by their followers as political poets, singing songs against the grain, or establishment. Dylan never wanted this title, or so he claims, preferring to say that his poetry/lyrics transcend context and political situation, that they are more universal than particular. In the doco 'No Direction Home' we see how Dylan resisted and criticised any attempts to pin him down to a movement, whether it be the civil rights movement (which Joan Baez was involved in), or the folk music crowd. Difranco, on the other hand, proudly flaunted her political agenda, never claiming to speak for anything in a universalising manner, always recognising context, privilege and power relations in any given moment. This kind of reflects the way that the male position is often neutralised and universalised, or normalised, leaving dissident views to be regarded as partial and biased. The neutralisation of the male perspective veils over its investments and politics. In this way, I am less interested in whether or not Dylan's music contains so-called 'universal themes', and more interested in the way his lyrics are informed by context and interpreted differently according to context. It also worries me that when people talk about Difranco as political and feminist this often is a criticism, a devaluing of her art and message. While Dylan can just have a 'love song' be a 'love song', Difranco must fight to be heard as anything other than an angry woman.

While Dylan is recognised for his protest music, he is also regarded highly for his love songs. His love songs are sometimes sweet, simple and beautiful, and at other times bitter, difficult and angry. Take, for example, "it ain't me babe": "You say you're looking for someone, who will promise never to part, someone to close his eyes for you, someone to close his heart, someone who'd die for you and more, well, it ain't me babe, no no, it ain't me you're looking for, babe".

Or, "Don't think Twice, It's Alright":

"I'm thinkin' and wonderin', walkin' down the road/I once loved a woman, a child I'm told/I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul/don't think twice it's alright/so long honey babe/where I'm bound I can't tell/Goodbye's too good a word babe/So i'll just say fare thee well/I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind/you coulda done better but I don't mind/you just kinda wasted my precious time/but don't think twice, it's alright".

In both of these examples, the male refuses to let the female possess him. He feels as though what she wants is to 'have him' completely, to deny him his freedom; she wants his soul not merely his heart, and she demands that he close his eyes and heart (presumably to others). His words express a frustration with this demand he feels "woman" places on him to be unconditional in love, to offer the world to her in love "to die for you and more". He'll only let her down, he says in "It ain't me, babe". It appears that gender roles and stereotypes inform the represenations here. The male experiences claustrophobia during what he perceives to be a woman strategising to own his heart, soul and freedom. The male must rebel, must break out of the attempts to confine and label.

Fuckpoliteness wrote that she experienced Leonard Cohen's music as both beautiful and frustrating, saying that sometimes she thinks that in his music " *woman* is locked in the role of temptress/muse…she’s the mythical, the beautiful, the source of sadness/loss, potentially loopy…she doesn’t have the same agency as him…she’s beauty and grace, temptation and pain, a ‘mystery’…what saps him of his strength, a source of temporary joy, of wonder, but bound to cause loss/grief/a stealing of strength…don’t stay in one place too long…" (for more go here) Dylan's music presents me with a similar bind. I both love the music (I am a HUGE Dylan fan) and feel that I must suspend my criticism at times in order to understand his message, or read it from a position other than my own. There is a song by Dylan "All I really want to do" (here) in which Dylan speaks of not wanting to define or confine, analyse or categorise his object of attention, rather he wants to be "friends". Whenever I hear this song, I always think back to Joni Mitchell's song "All I Want" in which she sings that "All I really want our love to do is bring out the best in me and you".

During a live recording at a gig, DiFranco speaks about how some of her older fans have criticised her for being "less political" in her music, to which she responds that she "got kinda distracted" and laughs. This raises interesting questions: is the love song political? Is feminism concerned with 'love'? Should it be? My short answer is yes to all of these questions. While we know of feminism as a movement concerned with equal rights in the public domain - the workforce, the law etc - feminism (which, simply put, recognises the politicisation of gender and gender difference in a male-dominated world) also has a lot to say about love. Love is gendered and whilst we may experience it at a 'personal' or 'private' level (which is undeniable), it is also regulated by the public sphere (for example, in the past who could fall in love with who was regulated by the law, banning homosexuality). But is the love song political? One of my favourite lines from a love song comes from DiFranco: "There is strength in the difference between us, and comfort where we overlap". But DiFranco is unafraid to confront the violence of love in patriarchy, writing of the cycles of domestic violence in "Out of Range" (here) and the objectification of woman and reduction to the body in "Gratitude" (here): "you changed the rules in an hour or two, i don't know what you and your sisters do, but please don't, please stop, this is not my obligation, what does my body have to do with my gratitude?"

Gotta run. If you happen to stumble over this blog site and feel like commenting please do! I am just starting to open these ideas up and would love a dialogue on them. More soon,

10th Feb 2004

Our Hindi Music Industry has always churned out top-notch ’Love Songs’ for us to sing & cherish. Let me take u into this ’Mystic River of Love’. But first, lets have a word from me on - what else but Love.

Love has many forms. Love manifests itself in many ways. We all have been in love sometime in our lives. No one remains untouched by love. Once touched by love, u r bound to feel on cloud nine. Love is a wonderful feeling. Its heaven in the arms of ur lover. But love doesn’t always last. Sometimes, love fails. Though u never expected that to happen but it happened. ’’Why’’ - you would ask but won?t get any answer.

why did u break my heart.. why did u fall in love.. why did u go away..away..away..

When we break-up obviously it hurts. We feel depressed. But with time everything gets fine, howsoever cheesy it sounds, its a truth. Either we get a new love or revive with the old one. Time has a very significant relationship with love. Time nurtures love. Time is a test of love. When love survives all the odds, it lasts forever. Otherwise it ends & only memories remain. The old memories couldn’t be discarded easily. Howsoever hard u try, everything would remind u of ur lost love. U would feel like going back to him/her. In ur life sadness sets in & u just don’t let go of that feeling from ur heart.

tum bin jiya jaaye kaise.. kaise jiya jaaye tum bin.. sadiyon se lambi hai raatein.. sadiyon se lambe hue din..

But thats the way love is. Love follows a cycle - We love, lose & win in love again. Live life as per ur beliefs. Don’t change for someone. Even if u love him/her from the core of ur heart. Actually thats not love. Its just the illusion that makes u want a person with whom u don’t really get along well. Its just that sometimes u fall in love with the idea of falling in love. So, if someone breaks ur heart don’t let that affect ur life to an extent that u end up becoming a Devdas. If u can’t get Paro then forget her, accept that she isn’t made for u. By accepting it u r opening urself for new relationships.

ho gayi hai kisi se jo anban.. thaam le doosra koi daaman.. zindgani ki raahein ajab hai.. ho akela to laakhon hai dushman

Always bear in mind, its easy to fall in love but its difficult to be in love forever & ever. Love is a condition & for it to last forever, some amount of maturity is essential. And no one can teach u that. Its for u to learn by ur own experience. So go, fall in love, even if ur mind says otherwise give it a try if the wish came from ur heart. Always follow ur heart. U either break-up or u learn to accept each others? follies & grow up together. One of the two is bound to happen. So why worry?

chaand ne kuch kaha.. raat ne kuch suna.. tu bhi sun bekhabar.. pyar kar.. ohohooo pyar kar.. aayi hai chandani.. muhse kehne yahi.. meri gali mere ghar.. pyar kar.. ohohooo pyar kar..

Lastly, don’t follow whatever I’ve said. But just follow ur heart. If ur heart is saying fall in love with someone, then do it. Time will let u know if u made a right or a wrong decision. In case it was right then nothing like it. In case it wasn’t, never mind. Atleast now u know what u want from life. Every decision, right or wrong, has the capacity to teach u something. Wrong ones though are disastrous but nevertheless they are ur best mentors. Live & learn !!

My love
Never thought you'd make me, break me
Now I'm up from below
Such a brilliant star you are
And will your love keep burning baby
Burn a hole right through my eyes
All these short times feel like no time
I thought you ought to know

I'm so far gone now I been running on empty
I'm so far gone now
Do you wanna take me on? [x2]

Do, Do you, Do you know?
Do you know how long I've waited?
To look up from below,
Just to find someone like you?
And will your love light burn me baby?
Burn a hole right through my heart
I think I might just trust you, maybe
But I'm not sure
I'm not sure I wanna know

I'm so far gone now I been running on empty
I'm so far gone now
Do you wanna take me on?

I'm so far gone now I been running on empty
I'm so far gone now
Do you wanna take me on? [x2]

Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa
I think you could make me girl
Could make me and take my life
I know you could break me girl
Take all of me
All of me, yeah hey

Wake up
My love
Never thought you'd make me, break me
Now I'm up from below
Such a brilliant star you are

I'm so far gone now I been running on empty
I'm so far gone now
Do you wanna take me on?
