Basically, I was approached a few months ago by a senior editor of Symantec's online magazine "Norton Today" because they were interested in doing a piece on Art and Security. I was approached because of my old work in security data visualization and the fact that'd I'd started to rework and hang the pieces in art shows like Artomatic and My Space on 7th.

Anyway, the interview went really well (in addition to being a lot of fun) and it's now online at:

They used a few older images in their Flash slideshow (My fault - I didnt get them newer images in time).  These were the originals we used at NetSec to do analysis and which have been in a number of presentations (and were in the batch I sent to ArcSight as examples when they were still developing Interactive Discovery, iirc).

I'm still interested in working more of these, but have been moving from graphing - which was a necessity of the business at the time - into a broader field of ontological information/concept representation in art.

(This is in addition to my media experimentation with / interest in projection. I think Id like to merge these two tracks together in the future, but havent gotten there yet.)

A representative from Diet Health.com interviewed Tim Lynch, a photographer/retoucher that’s been in the magazine business ever since the introduction of digital photography. He’s said that over 5 years ago, hiring people to alter photos was rare due to the cost. But now, it has almost become expected and necessary to utilize Photoshop in every picture. In order to efficiently advertise their magazines, they need captivating images that are next to flawless. Mere make-up, lighting, exercise, and dieting has proven itself as less than satisfactory which has led most magazines to digitally enhance their photos. What they alter includes, but is not limited to: deleting blemishes, sunspots, acne, scars, wrinkles, other unsightly marks, changing the size of waistline, eyes, bust, altering body fat and skin, altering hair, clothes, and skin color. So many effects that are all used to market their content. Tim Lynch also commented on how many of the Hollywood types have their own personal retoucher that is responsible for enhancing released photographs. In fact, the celebrity will not permit that any of their altered photos be released without their consent.

The controversy on using Photoshop is whether or not the publishers are deceiving their audiences. The sole reason being that many people do not realize that the face on the cover of a magazine has undergone some sort of digital enhancement. Magazine publishers have even commented that it is presumed that their audience recognize the photos as having been digitally altered in some way or another. Many argue that this has lead teenage girls to pursue the unattainable of goal of perfection. They follow all the healthy steps such as diet and exercise, but are unable to look exactly like the girls on the magazine covers. It has even lead teenage girls to develop eating disorders and self-esteem issues. The fact of the matter is what impact this is having on the youth. Has this challenged teenagers to attain the unattainable? Though this has contributed to emotional/physical imbalance among some teens, it is not the only factor. What the rest of the media portrays as “perfect” sways many to follow suit. Using Photoshop has dramatically changed the magazine industry. Even though many disagree with altering photos, the general consensus of utilizing it has proven very positive. People simply love creating “perfection” even if it’s not realistic.

P.s I've noticed recently a lot of people are rocking the four-eyed look. Lemme just say: I was doing that in year 3. Say what? Oh. LOL.

He was full of apologies and said the acknowledgement was in the proofing notes, which he wrote himself, but it was missed out by the artworker.  He went onto say that it was still his fault as he signed it off.

Anyway, he'll ensure that there is an acknowledgement and apology in the next issue and has offered me a years free subscription by way of apology- which I've obviously accepted!  He's also put a cheque in the post to cover their standard image reproduction fee, which will cover my 3 pics.  He hasn't said how much it is though!

I regret to tell you that I need to cancel my subscription to the kids portion of your magazine.  You see, my daughter basically doesn't want me to sew her clothes anymore, unless they are mainstream, and "non funky".  This limits me to things that aren't as European styled as I like her to wear, but I do not want her to feel singled out at school.

Of late, I've been either using Jalie, or modified adult Kwik Sew patterns to sew for her.

I DO plan to keep the womens subscription, as I will happily fall into the "funky" category.  Besides, I still need the joy of finding the infamous white envelope in my mailbox, rushing in the house and devouring every style contained in its pages.

Please do not take it personally, Ottobre.  It could just be a phase, and if so, I will use this year to purchase from some retailers who sell your magazine online.  If it is not a phase, then please understand the changing tastes of a preteen who wants to fit in, after years of being unique.

Well for Obama this is his second time featured on the cover of the magazine — the first was for the September 2007 issue. There's something special going on in the air and we're gonna be able to experience it. Oh yeah, not to mention..he also gets the endorsement of the damn magazine, the first presidential endorsement ever made by Vibe.

This article in Popular Science on strange sleep disorders (pg. 55) puts a name to my awkward dreaming. According to this, I am a lucid dreamer, which means that I can control what happens in my dreams, which is true.

Showing this to my friends (who frequently reached out and took the magazine, geekily interested), they thought that this was the coolest thing ever.

Frankly, I find it annoying. What often happens to me is when I wake myself up after dreaming like this, my head is mildly throbbing. I never stop thinking! Also, I tend to be chased in my dreams (my dream-self takes this as a game, and grins madly) which makes my knees ache too, because I can't run any faster.

Perhaps one day I learn to embrace this idiosyncrasy.
