SanDisk's cunning plan

Memory maker SanDisk wants to replace some CD sales with fingernail-sized memory cards. SanDisk has recruited four major record labels and retailers, Best Buy and Wal-Mart Stores, to put albums onto microSD memory cards.

Cards will be loaded with music in the MP3 format and free of copy protections. Called "slotMusic," the new format is meant to provide a bridge between CDs and online music. Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, Warner Music and EMI are hoping slotMusic can be another physical revenue source and one that is more versatile than CDs.

SlotMusic albums can be played on mobile phones and multimedia players. The new albums will come with a small USB dongle that lets buyers use them with computers. SlotMusic albums will be sold on 1 gigabyte microSD cards, which means they will be able to hold a full album and related content such as liner notes and cover art.

This time it's called slotmusic and is basically high quality DRM free mp3's on a MicroSD memory card.

Apparently any MicroSD based album or collection of songs may even come with a USB based SD reading device.

I'm waiting to see quite how small the album art and track listing is going to be on these things.

SanDisk and four major record labels have announced that they will begin selling albums on microSD memory cards.  The new format is being called "SlotMusic" and can be plugged directly mobile phones and mp3 players with compatible technology.  The memory cards will also come with a USB sleeve enabling them to be used on computers as well.  The  cards will be priced from $7 to $10, and be available from several major retailers this coming holiday season.

MILPITAS, Calif. (AP) -- SanDisk Corp. said Tuesday it had rejected a $5.85 billion takeover offer from Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd after its board determined the deal was "inadequate in multiple respects."

SanDisk (SNDK)'s shares shot up $7.81, or 52%, to $22.85 in after-hours trading after ending the regular session up 63 cents at $15.04.

Samsung, in turn, said it had reiterated its $26-per-share cash offer for Milpitas-based SanDisk.

In letter to SanDisk's board dated Sept. 15, Samsung Chief Executive Officer Yoon-Woo Lee said that after four months of negotiations, SanDisk "continues to cling to unrealistic expectations on both its standalone market value and an appropriate merger price."

But SanDisk shot back, saying the price offered by Samsung undervalues the maker of flash storage and memory cards used in digital cameras, cell phones and other electronics.

SanDisk said Samsung had indicated that "it might be willing to pay a significant premium" to SanDisk's closing price of $28.75 per share on May 22, 2008, which it said was the date Samsung first approached SanDisk about a possible deal.

Samsung's offer "is an opportunistic attempt to take advantage of SanDisk's current stock price," the SanDisk statement said.

South Korea-based Samsung, however, noted that its $26-per-share offer represents a 93% premium over SanDisk's closing share price of $13.46 on Sept. 4, the day before media reports of a possible deal surfaced.

Samsung makes NAND flash memory used in digital devices such as cameras and music players, as well as DRAM, or dynamic random access memory, chips used in personal computers.

In his letter, Lee said a merger with Samsung would help insulate SanDisk from deteriorating market conditions in the flash memory market, which faces oversupply and deep pricing pressure, as well as weakening consumer spending.

I purchased the SanDisk 2GB SD Memory Card (SDSDB-2048, Bulk Package)to provide extra storage space on my PDA. I have had extremely limited experience with this product, but it works and works exactly as advertised. The memory card arrived quickly and was well packaged. Electronic products such as these are undoubtedly overpriced in terms of their production costs, and shipping costs are always ridiculous. However, I needed only the one card, and, for my purposes, this product is entirely acceptable.

Great for storing many pictures. I used this memory card while out hiking for ten days around Mount Rainier and was able to store over 1200 pictures from my trip. This was one of the greatest investments I've made.

I purchased the wrong size memory card & I tried to locate contact information for the Amazon marketplace seller...I did a google search & found nothing. Nothing on their packing slip included their contact info...no e-mail address or phone number. So I ended up exchanging the product at a local Office Depot to get the correct size memory card that I needed. Not a smooth process at all...

Basically the camera is programmed to take panorama shots ONLY if you have the olympus brand memory card, and this card worked, so it must be Olympus. Right?

Well who knows, it works and that's all that mattered to me really. I did buy another memory card, see below, as the XD cards really only get up to 2GB which seems to be enough for now but you never know. I've included one of my videos of what this thing looks like, it actually comes with a pretty cool case for it inside as well.

1. Modchip

By far the most popular mod, a modchip can either be a solder modchip or a solderless solution. If you have some soldering experience, or are brave enough, try a solder modchip, because they are cheaper and are more secure. If you have no soldering experience, and you still would rather want a chip, go for a solderless modchip. Remember to get a modchip that is supported by your xbox version. Advantages:

+ Can be used in every version xbox (if you get the right chip)
+ Many chips have on/off switches so you can turn off the chip and get onto Xbox Live
+ Easy to update BIOS
+ Easy to upgrade Hard Drive

Disadvantages:

- Price
- Requires you to open your xbox and solder your chip in (solder modchips)
- Voids any warranty
- Solderless modchips may come loose from time to time and require readjustment

2. TSOP

A TSOP mod requires you to open up your xbox, solder a few points, then use an exploitable game and gamesave to flash your onboard TSOP chip with a bios. The soldering is easy and the flashing is easy.

Advantages:

+ Price (FREE)
+ Easy to solder ( just a couple points need to be bridged, and perhaps a wire or two)
+ Version 1.0 to 1.1 TSOP is 1 mb, so you can install a switch and use Xbox LIVE.
+ Easy to update BIOS
+ Easy to upgrade Hard Drive

Disadvantages:

- YOU CANNOT TSOP A VERSION 1.6 XBOX
- You can TSOP a version 1.2 - 1.5 xbox, but you would not be able to use Xbox LIVE
- You need an exploitable game
- You need a way of transferring a gamesave to your retail xbox (Action Replay, Homemade Action Replay, or Use a modded xbox and a memory card)

3. Softmod

By using an exploitable game and an exploitable gamesave, you can take advantage of "bugs" in the xbox dashboard to mod your xbox. While it may have more advantages than a TSOP mod, the major disadvantage is the difficulty of upgrading your hard drive.

Advantages:

+ Price (FREE)
+ Works on all xboxes now
+ You can coldboot xbox games and use Xbox LIVE
+ Newest softmods install virtual C drives and virtual eeproms, making it harder to "break" the softmod
+ Very easy to install

Disadvantages:

- You need an exploitable game
- You need a way of transferring a gamesave to your retail xbox (Action Replay, Homemade Action Replay, or Use a modded xbox and a memory card)
- Difficult to upgrade the hard drive (not impossible, but it is a lot easier with a chip or TSOP)

4. Hotswap

Moddng your Xbox through hotswapping is still considered a softmod. The only difference is you are opening up your Xbox and PC, then connecting your Xbox hard drive to your PC to transfer files to the hard drive. This way, you can softmod without needing an exploitable game or Action Replay.

Advantages:

+ Price (FREE)
+ Works on all xboxes now
+ You can coldboot xbox games and use Xbox LIVE
+ Newest softmods install virtual C drives and virtual eeproms, making it harder to "break" the softmod

Disadvantages:

Symantec identificó este virus de bajo riesgo como W32.Gammima.AG. Ninguna computadora en la estación espacial fue afectada de manera alguna. ¿Cómo llegó el virus allá? Nadie lo sabe, así que una investigación se está llevando acabo ahora. Por lo menos, todas las 71 computadoras portátiles con sistemas operativos distintas a las de Windows no están en riesgo. According to Space.com, a virus had been found at the NASA Space Station on July 25. The goal of the virus: simply to steal another users’ access to online games. Symantec identified this low-risk virus as W32.Gammima.AG. No computers at the space station were affected in any way. How did the virus get there? No one knows, so a search is being conducted now. At least all 71 laptop computers with operating systems other than Windows are not at risk. It seems like a USB memory card was used. What do you think about this?
