Did you know that fish like the electric eel and the electric ray can produce high voltage electric shocks as high as 700 volts.  Although these electric shocks can only be discharged in short bursts they are extremely effective as both an attack and defense mechanism. To put things into perspective the electricity levels involved with an eel could protect it from most large predators such as anacondas and crocodiles, and may even be enough to kill a human.

So how on earth do they create electricity from within their own bodies. The answer lies in the presence of specialised cells called electrocytes. On average an electric eel might have around 7000 of these cells and with each cell being able to produce 0.1 volts of electricity you can quickly see where all that voltage comes from.

The Kangaroo Hop

Did you know that the kangaroo is the only large animal that uses hopping as a form of movement. In fact the kangaroo hops so efficiently that it can easily hop at speeds of around 25mph for distances up to  2km and over short distances can hit speeds as high as 40-45mph.

Despite the kangaroo having such a fast and energy efficient hopping technique it unfortunately cannot walk in the conventional sense. Rather it uses its tail and fore limbs to help it pivot and almost crawl if it needs only move a few steps.

Water Can Crack Metal

Did you know that water can expand in volume by around 1/9th of its total composition. This means that when frozen it occupies more space than when in liquid form.

The above phenomena is very common in houses where water pipes burst over the winter due to ice forming in the pipes. The pipes which were once wide enough for water to go through are now too small when the ice forms.

The brittle nature of the metal when it feezes combined with the ice expanding causes them to crack. In fact the enormous power of frozen water is also used in quarries to loosen up huge blocks of rocks.

What Is a Light Year?

A light year is the total distance travelled by a beam of light in one year. A beam of light can travel at up to 300,000 km/sec and the approximate distance covered in a year works out to be 9,470,000,000,000 km (1 light year = 9.47 x10¹² km). So why did scientists create this new unit of measure ?

Well as you can imagine the universe is so vast that talking about the distances between stars and planets was just unmanagable with miles and kilometres. For this reason a standardised unit of measure which we call the light year was created.

Warning: This gets really, really, really, really loud. I didn't even bother to try to contain the left and right channel guitars, so they're clipping all over the place. Also, like all great doom song, this is basically small variations on one very slow riff, pummelled itno the ground for about seven minutes.

Our interview with Arif Mirabdolbaghi of Protest The Hero pretty well consisted of me trying not to think up overly stereotypical question you'd ask any muscian currently on tour. I hate the idea of having to interview someone, especially someone I really want to sit down and talk with, because Im pretty well forced to gauge our discusssion toward his opinions of a) how the tour's going so far or b) how he feels about playing along side everyone else on the tour. But (un)fortunatly I now know that they find touring tough, but well worth it and that meeting bands on any tour isnt always what you want it to be. They're either great guys with little to no talent or there the best performers youve ever seen with no interest in the other bands at all. bands like The Fall Of Troy and The Human Abstract seem to be excluded from this demographic.

After sitting down with Arif for a few minutes he had brought to light some of the issues concerning their venue placement for the tour, which I found a bit curious after seeing the actual size of the Ernie Ball stage. According to Arif (and im paraphrasing here) the tours founder Kevin Lyman refuses to have the band placed onto a larger stage (suspicions are that he dissaproved of a lude graphic from the previous tour). Arif's motives behind this decision seemed to stem from a genuine concern for the audience's safety. He  believed that they would have been better suited on one of the main stages so everyone could enjoy the show without blocking walkways for other concert patronts walking by. Need I mention that when we got to see Protest's set- crows of people were blocking the walkway out, cramming past the cound booth. Kim couldn't barely even see the stage. Unfortunatly, as they were setting up a huge strm cloud drained us out and we never go to see the show- which if it was like any of the other Protest performances we've seen this year, would have been rad.

Although we didnt have very many questions for Protest The Hero's bass player we had a really great time just sitting down with him. There was no huge ego or incredibly obnoxious personality to dodge, just a really down to earth and easy to get along with muscian. He told us about smoking laws in Japan, American's views on littering and religion and even about his love for pizza. that last one was sort of in passing.

Arif says after finishing the Warped tour in August, the Band has another tour set in motion for October, and they hope to head home in December and start writing again.

On a whim I decided to join Mike for yesterday's event and I thought I might share some of the experience here. First off was Elitist Death Squad, who once again delivered a short but extremely funny show (bible quotations included), but like so often, their technical riffs drowned in the horrible settings that were made by the first sound technician. When Man Made Suicide fired up their instruments, the sound had miraculously gotten worse (I have seldom seen that it got worse over the course of an evening). After a few (not so nice) suggestions by the band, the sound guy ran for the hills and a replacement took over. Finally somebody who knew what he was doing took over the helm and the sound started to be a bit better (although the terrible setting of the speakers did not allow for an immense improvement). I did not see much of MMS because the sound was really too terrible to stand.

Assorted Nails, a band from Freiburg, but with a Luxembourgian front man managed to stir up the stiff crowd and it started to feel like a real metal event. Both Scarred and Cleanstate delivered an impressive show (no surprises here), but due to all the delays, they played for a half empty room. The event was ok, and the beer was cheap, but next time they should try to find a sound technician with some experience in metal. Furthermore, they should have positioned the loudspeakers in a way that it would have been possible to actually hear the singer, while standing in the front row.

I hope they will repeat this event while keeping the above mishaps in mind and all should go well. Pictures can be found here.

I will address the bad first. The bad, in this instance, is the pity I feel for Australian gamers. I have learned through numerous sources that Australians really receive it in the anus from all video game companies. First of all, the prices of everything in gaming is nearly doubled in almost every instance, if not worse. For instance, XBOX Live costs Australians $99 US dollars, which is about double to our $50 a year because their dollar is $0.98 to ours. On a similar note, even though the Australians pay double for XBL, they do not get all the fancy features. They will not be able to use the new Netflix feature, nor the 1v100 feature, and they also cannot download videos from marketplace.

That is not the worst of it, though. Not only do they have less features fro double the price, but games are not released there at the same date (or even close to, for that matter) that they are in the US and other major markets.

On a lighter, nicer, side of things, I am going to share with you some wonderful music (as always).

The name of the band is ISIS. Their game: ambient sludge metal. Their Wikipedia page describes them as "post-metal" and "sludge metal". As you could read in their wiki page, they are a Boston-based band, which I was quite excited to hear about.

Anyway, enough about the band itself. The music is what makes them remarkable. Last March, my friend Ryan was like "Hey, you ever listen to ISIS?" and I replied 'Who?'. Much to his disbelief I had not heard of or listened to them before. That's when I first checked them out. At first, I liked them, but it was not obsessed as I am now. The song he played for me was "Garden of Light" which is the last track on their 2006 release In the Absence of Truth. As a whole, that album could quite possibly be one of my favorites in quite some time. In my ears, the best track on the album is BY FAR "Holy Tears". It's the heaviest song, and it lasts for precisely seven minutes and six seconds. That is 7:06 of pure brilliance. I cannot describe to you how moving this song is, or anything else about it for that matter, and do it justice. Because of that, I am going to embed a player with it right now. Prepare yourself for EARGASM.

So? How was your eargasm? If it was not one of the most intense eargasms of your life, you simply do not appreciate sonic brilliance.

Now, we shall move on to the ugly. This is slightly ludicrous to criticize my own blog in a blog post, but, it has to be done.

Since I have been posting here at WordPress, none of the posts I have given you few, wonderful readers have been nothing but useless drivel. Jargon. Empty words. Although they have provided small amounts of insight into my mind, what substance or knowledge have you gained that can be applied in a positive manner? None, as far as I can see, and hat is a problem. There is far too much useless drivel in the world today, what with the failing media and news outlets. Do I really need to be adding to the cesspool of useless banter floating around the Internet? I want to be more, and I feel that the people deserve more. The problem is, however, that I have nothing useful to say. I cannot provide insight to any real dilemmas or real-world issues. I would try, but I would fall into the category of "this guy doesn't know what he is talking about" and I DO NOT want to become that guy.

Will I continue to write in this blog the way I have previously? Of course I will. What better way to improve than to practice?

The other downside is my poor vocabulary usage. I have a very concrete, predictable style of writing, and I wish to change that. The problem I run into is that I do not know how to solve the paradox. Do I keep writing? That could lead to me only solidifying the style I write with now, or if I was able to write with enough discipline I could possibly work my way in a different direction. The most problematic hurdle I run into is a lack of critique. Out of all the readers I have had come to my blog (424 curious visitors, as I type this), I have only received 18 comments. Not a ratio I particularly enjoy. If any of you wish for my blog to become a more interesting, flavorful read, PLEASE help me help you and comment. If there was any confusion, anyone can comment. You do not need to register to WordPress or anything (although, you should get your own blog!).

An owner may choose a collar that looks good around the neck of his pet. But this should not be the primary factor in choosing a perfect collar for there are more important things than just pleasing appearance. Safety, use and convenience should come first.

The most common type of collar is flat collar or buckle collar. Identification such as your dog's name, your name and contact info are usually attached in this type of collar. So if unfortunately your Poodle got lost while you are having a walk or out to shop for his toys, there is a greater chance of having him back having your contact information attached on his neck. Poodles have dense coat that usually attracts the crowd - and fleas as well. Flea infestation in Poodles can be quite difficult to treat given this breed's coat. Therefore a flea collar is a great option when your dog is at high risk of being infested with fleas. This flea collar is impregnated with chemicals that repel fleas.

A collar can be a great training tool too. Slip collars, prong collars, martingale collars and electronic collars are types of collars commonly used when training a dog. These collars, despite each others differences in style and design, control and prevent a dog from doing things you do not want to.

A collar could be made of nylon, metal, cotton or leather. Nylon, metal and leather collars are certainly strong and will definitely control your dog regardless of the size. However, these materials can irritate the skin given the fact that Poodles have sensitive skin and are prone to skin problems. Choosing a collar made of cotton is therefore a great idea. And since Poodles have unique head shape, there are collars specifically created for them. One for example is a martingale Poodle collar, a collar that prevents a Poodle from slipping out of it.

When you have finally decided what type of collar is best for your four-legged friend, do not forget to get more information on their proper use. Get a collar that fits perfectly around the neck of your dog. It shouldn't be too tight to squeeze his esophagus nor too loose to let him slip out.

The tree trunk and roots was where the bulk of the tabs were twisted into the sculpture. As well as the modified 'leaves' that spiral upwards and 'change' colour.

The branches, on the other hand, consisted mostly of wires with varying thickness weaved together.

The sculpture no longer exists, but the concept behind it was to create something (hopefully) beautiful out of something unassuming. Trees, i have always felt, are beautiful. (and i literally, would walk around school staring at trees to try understand how to shape my branches and also comment on which trees look nice and which didnt look as pretty)

During the experimentation stages of developing this idea, i even made a crude ring (of sorts). Not sure where it is though :/

But I must say that Maison Martin Margiela's work, here, is very inspiring. I'd LOVE to see the pieces up close to see how its all put together. Whether the bands holding the tabs allow for movement. And if so, how does it stay in that position and not slip. And what was done to make sure that the wearer doesnt get scratched my the rough edges then the tabs are plucked off the cans!!

From BBC - At first glance, Cesare Bonizzi looks like the archetypal Capuchin monk - round-faced, stout, with twinkling eyes and a long flowing white beard. But beneath his robes beats a heart of metal.

Brother Cesare is the lead singer in a heavy metal band which has just released its second album.

A former missionary in the Ivory Coast, he lives in a small friary in the Milan hinterland.

The 62-year-old monk's love affair with heavy metal began when he attended a Metallica concert some 15 years ago.

"I was overwhelmed and amazed by the sheer energy of it" he says.

Hard rock and heavy metal have, over the years, been criticised as the work of the devil.

It's a claim which Brother Cesare, also known as Brother Metal, says is nonsense.

He started playing and recording cassettes, firstly with "lighter" metal music, but gradually he realised that what really moved him was the hard core.

The members of his band were at first sceptical at the idea of teaming up with a Capuchin monk but their doubts soon evaporated.

"Five minutes after meeting Brother Cesare I decided to go ahead, because he manages to convey so much energy, that other musicians and youngsters often don't manage to express," lead guitarist, Cesare Zanotti, told Reuters.

Brother Metal recently appeared in the Gods of Metal festival in Italy, along with giants such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Slayer, playing to a crowd of leather-clad hard-core metal fans.

"It was wonderful being there among all these young people" he told the Rome newspaper La Repubblica.

"The only problem was that at one stage out slipped a "what the f…" because each time some people think that I am in fancy dress, they can't believe a robed monk is on the stage playing their music".

With a booming voice, Brother Metal belts out lyrics that are decidedly gritty, talking about real-life issues and not shying away from sex, drugs and alcohol.

He does touch on faith and religion but is adamant that he is not seeking to draw people to Catholicism through his stage performances.

Video clips of his performances on YouTube have helped spread his popularity and fan base.

His second heavy metal album, "Misteri" (Mysteries) has just been released.

In a sign of Brother Metal's eclecticism, it drew inspiration from a group of women in southern Italy who sang about Mary, the mother of Jesus, and a heavy metal version of that song is on the CD.

Other songs talk about how alcohol warms the heart but excess drinking can damage the liver, and how important sex is to man.

Brother Cesare says he has never had any trouble with his superiors over his choice of musical career and would like to send his new album to the Pope. "He is a music lover and metal is music!" he says.

While Brother Cesare always wears his traditional brown robe and sandals as a reminder that he has chosen a life of devotion to God, he is keen to distinguish established religion from faith, and from proselytising.

"I do it to convert people to life, to understand life, to grab hold of life, to savour it and enjoy it. Full stop" he says.
