The Westinghouse Digital Signage Solution -- DSS -- is budget right and uses their own software and templates, rather than that of a 3rd party supplier. Westinghouse, known as a TV display provider, really has something here. The combination of TV display(s), easy to use functionality and templates, as well as and SD card readable network box makes this a great signage choice, especially when a 42-inch display solution is priced under $2,000. You can even network more displays to cover larger area needs.

The Westinghouse DSS Network box has an SD card reader to make transfer of files easy.

I’ve been working IT for over 10 years now, way back before Network Solutions was the behemoth

I've been working IT for over 10 years now, way back before Network Solutions was the behemoth it is today.

Recently I've been working for a $500 million dollar company handling their Interactive Marketing, and dealing with the Hell called Network Solutions.

I believe all things in life should get three strikes. Here are Network Solutions.

1) Incompetent, unavailable, incomprehensible support. The majority of Network Solutions support is handled in India. Unfortunately, instead of the high caliber work they opted for the cheapest solution which involves thick accents (I'm Asian with an Indian best friend... even I can't understand it) and inflexible phone scripts. My average wait time was 2 hours before reaching a rep, two of which hung up on me and none of whom resolved the 8 different issues / occasions I called.

2) Price. Network Solutions prices (between $20-$35 for a "Gold" member) are ridiculous. GoDaddy.com is at $9.95/domain for an average user, or down to $7 for the level we're at. What's the extra money for? They're definitely not spending on their support.

3) Ease of Use. I spent an hour looking for how to find my domains, and well over 4 transferring them. Transferring from other registrars is fairly easy, but transferring from Network Solutions is brain damage. Not only that, but Network Solutions CHARGES $25 to transfer TO THEM!! Compare that to the $7 at GoDaddy with US based, English speaking support.

I'm not the only one with Network Solutions woes, nor will I be the last. But if you're thinking of registering a domain, remember, Network Solutions Sucks!

It's being reported all over the net that Comcast was hacked (just check this link, this link, and this link for examples) late yesterday. Apparently their Network Solutions account was compromised so that the authoritative DNS servers that tell your computer how to get to comcast.net were changed to send traffic a page that said the following:

KRYOGENICS Defiant and EBK RoXed Comcast
sHouTz to VIRUS Warlock elul21 coll1er seven

I don't know who should be more embarrassed. Comcast for having an Network Solutions account that could be compromised or Network Solutions for allowing it to happen. In any case, it may take until tomorrow to get everything up and running again. Hopefully, both Comcast and Network Solutions can make sure that this doens't happen again. Otherwise it will be totally Comcastic for both of them.

When Husband started doing freelance work he set up a website for the business. We were referred by

When Husband started doing freelance work he set up a website for the business. We were referred by a friend to Network Solutions for our domain name and we purchased our domain name for five years. We did not shop around for price. At the time I didn't completely understand or trust this whole web thing so I wanted to go with a company based a trusted referral.

Since then I've learned a great deal, but am an expert in no one's eyes, especially my own. I know just enough to get myself in trouble.

Our domain registration is up this month, and Network Solutions haws been e-mailing me to remind me to renew. The e-mail included the renewal prices:

1 year $34.99/yr

2 years $29.99/yr

3 years $24.99/yr

5 years $19.99/yr

100 years $9.99/yr

I was not impressed. Last year we signed up for a virtual server so we could do our own web hosting for ourselves and our clients. The prices for domain names with the company we use is far less than Network Solutions charges. A one year registration is only $14.95 for the year. Additional years are only $1 less, so we decided to switch the registration to our server company for one year.

I needed to contact Network Solutions to get an authorization code to complete the transfer. I had no issue with making the call as it's a good protection against domain theft. Before I called, though, I wanted to see if Network Solutions would offer me the same price on their website. So I went to their website, signed into my account and started the process to get a price on a domain.

I was surprised to see:

Domain Name

Price

jewbie.net

Keep my information private

$9.00/year

Huh. $9.00 a year? That's much less than the $34.99 my renewal reminder offered. And notice there's no asterisk pointing me to a disclaimer about that price... I thought perhaps it was a deal they offered when a client added a second domain.

I called Network Solutions and spoke to a very pleasant girl who informed me that the $9.00/year was for a 100 year registration and that I would discover that fact "later in the registration process". While on the telephone with her I went further into the registration process and had to move three pages ahead before they were forced to tell me that:

I have problems with this type of deceptive pricing, most of which I don't need to explain to you.

And really. Can they not even multiply? Last time I checked 100 X $9.00 = $900.

I decided not even to get into it with the girl on the phone. I was going to be good. I wasn't in the mood for a confrontation. I just informed her I was transferring my service and asked for the code.

Then she made me a "special offer" to renew my registration for only $15.00 for the year.

Oh really? Why wasn't I offered this already? "Well," she replied, "because you called. On the phone."

Ahhhhhh.

I told her the same thing I tell car dealers and finance managers when they initially offer me a higher interest rate than I could get on my own and then, after being informed of the lower rate I had already secured on my own, offer to meet the lower rate.

"I don't do business that way," I told the Network Solutions girl. "If you aren't willing to offer me the lowest rate from the start then you don't deserve my business."

The Consumerist is going to love this one. I think I have my first submission.

And Network Solutions has one less client.

The Bottom Line: Make sure you're getting the best available price. Today that means checking the website and calling.

If I can't get it fixed in the next few weeks I'm really thinking about pulling my account and heading over to GoDaddy!!!!!

1st off, What is a Blog Carnival?

A Blog carnival is more or less a blog article or an entire blog that is dedicated to multiple things of the same topic. For example, this blog carnival ( which is this article beginning the next paragraph) will highlight some recent news and insights into the domain name world. Instead of writing long blogs on all these topics, or writing an article for each of them, I will simply highlight the most important information and give you a link to where most of the content lies. Most people reading my blog would know what a carnival is, but I can't assume since I was unaware of this until a few months earlier. Here is the Wiki Definition of a Blog Carnival. Ok, let's begin shall we...

Domain News:

* Network Solutions got themselves in a bind with this whole "front running" tactic ( I have heard it is called differently ). They held this guy's website domain name while it was unregistered and he had to pay more. He wasn't knowledgeable of Network Solution's holding rule, but this has lead to a class action lawsuit. Read more here.

* Pizza.com just got sold for 2.6 million slices. Thank god there is no way that name could ever get trademarked, because he was squatting on this site for 14 years. And Cyber-Squatters are getting their rears pushed off sites with trademarked names. This news will probably be good to deter amateurs locking up these names, but I am unsure with an increase of 33 million domain registrations last year that anyone is going to keep up.

* Craigslist is going against a random blog for using its name. The passive Craigslist company I am accustomed to seems to be getting a little bite in its personality. Doesn't seem like a battle worth waging, in my eyes.

* Skirt.com Loses out to retrieve sk*rt.com. Hmmm, I wonder why...

* A really good site with decent domain content, Domainnamewire.com, has a great article on domain news for the week.

* I feel like this is free advertising for something I don't like, but someone made a book on how to make money domain name-tradin'! I get turned off when I see this site. If someone can tell me if this book is insightful in anyway, let me know. Otherwise, add a grain of salt to your common sense for this one.

* Do you sell domains on Sedo? Well, check out this doosy of a mistake that could've done some serious damage. The Boobtube scare.

ARTICLES

* Great Article on the upcoming ( wholesale so yes this affects YOU ), price increase of .com & .net domain names in the Fall. Great perspective, but it could've added the value of the dollar into the mix...

* Having trouble managing all of your domains at once? Is your portfolio getting bigger, are you losing track of your domains' status, parking traffic etc. Well, these guys did too, and now they have a company to help everyone manage their domain names.

Craigslist has a competitor? HAHAHAHAAHA! Don't think so, KiJiji

2006 article on choosing the right domain for your blog.

Ok that is it for our first time. We will post up again tomorrow or Tuesday. My eyes feel sleepy, and these old bones need to rejuvenate for work tomorrow. Goodnight. If you have any news, insights or comments, please feel free to contact me.

A few days ago I posted about the protest in the Netherlands, regarding the Geert Wilders' yet unreased film. Miss Beth posted on Grizzly Groundswell that the FITNA film has been released. You can read her post here. She has linked to many sites that have more details about Geert Wilders, his film and the Fatwas (threats).

This is not a film for the lighthearted. Yet it is a film that all Freedom loving Americans, and those the world over, must watch. I have watched it and there are things that will shock you. No wonder why Muslims were protesting it. There is no way they can prove the film is a lie.

Watch it at United American Committee, here or at http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=7d9_1206624103.

Press release from Network Solutions regarding their customer Geert Wilders. Hosting providers interfering with customer ´s web content is always somewhat suspect. The legal department of Network Solutions must have worked hard to produce this text - trying to balance between explicit political condemnation and apolitical corporate neutrality. Hopefully Geert Wilders get his money back and find a way to set up his own server independent of commercial (and political) interests.

Network Solutions’ Statement Regarding the Suspension of Fitnathemovie.com

We have also requested to review the planned content prior to it being loaded onto the site to determine whether the content violates Network Solutions’ Acceptable Use Policy. We are still waiting to hear from our customer. In the interim, we have temporarily suspended the site.

During this suspension, the customer has full access to the site. If the customer provides Network Solutions with the content and it is determined that the content does not violate the Acceptable Use Policy, then the customer will be permitted to post the content. However, if it does violate our policy, then the customer is free to post the content using another number of other avenues, but not with Network Solutions.

Network Solutions’ Statement Regarding the Suspension of Fitnathemovie.com

Herndon, VA — March 24, 2008 —

Over the last month, Network Solutions received a number of complaints regarding the website FITNATHEMOVIE.COM. At the same time, our hosting customer for this site also made several public comments regarding their plans for the use of this site.

In response to the complaints and the customer’s public comments, Network Solutions has made repeated requests to discuss the matter with our customer.

Network Solutions is by no means taking any action to limit freedom of speech or to preemptively censor content. Our company also does not proactively police the content of our customers’ sites. If a complaint is received, however, we do conduct a review to determine whether the site’s content violates our company’s Acceptable Use Policy.

Wilders – bespreekbaarheid problemen samenleving:

03 december 2007 -

Driekwart Nederland vreest gevolgen film Wilders:

16 januari 2008 -

Nederland verliest hiermee haar eigen identiteit!

Katholieke Priesters - Het Recente Schandaal:

07 maart 2008 - Geen enkele omroep wil film Wilders uitzenden:

05 maart 2008 - Website Fitna The Movie is online

In recent weeks, Wilders announced that he was working on a short film documenting abuses by muslims, and quoting the Quran to show where these monsters get their theological excuses for their terror.

A couple of months ago, he registered the domain name fitnathemovie.com with a company called Network Solutions, the fifth largest domain supplier and hosting company in the world. They happily took his money, he put no substantial content on the site, except for a picture: This is a picture of the Quran, with the words Allahu Akhbar (the Arabic words for 'God Is Greatest), and the release date of the film, March 23, when he would post the film on this site.

There has been much talk of this matter for many weeks, especially in The Netherlands. Network Solutions did nothing with the site...until a few hours before the release date. They then took the site offline, and if you tried to view the site, you were given this message: This is is telling us that the site has been suspended, and Network Solutions is investigating the matter due to complaints about the site, and possible TOS violations.

Now, riddle me this, Batman: There was no substantial content on the site, except for a picture of the Quran, which is revered by well over a billion people across the world. Exactly what content was it that was so offensive to people that led to NS pulling the site? Most likely, a flurry of threats from muslims in Europe and America. Washington Post reporter Brian Kerbs reports that in an interview with Electronic Frontier Foundation, a group devoted to online civil rights, a representative "said it was the first case he'd heard of in which a U.S.-based registrar had preemptively suspended a domain name for violating its use policy."

Never happened before...

In Krebs article, he reports that he interviewed a representative from Network Solutions, Susan Wade. She claimed that the company had received several complaints in recent weeks (again, complaints about exactly what on the site?). Krebs went on to say this:

In the meantime, she said, a decision was made to deactive the site given the potential violence that the movie could spark. She said Wilders could still access the site himself and was free to move or redirect its content to another domain.

"When you look at the history and violence surrounding this particular situation...some of the bad things that have happened or could happen, that was part of what we were thinking in suspending the Web site," Wade said.

Wade said the company hadn't received any specific threats regarding the site, but that
Network Solutions employees had been reminded this week about observing regular physical safety and security measures at work. (emphasis mine)

Let me interpret that for you: They are scared. This is exactly the message Wilders has been trying to get across to Europe, and the West. These people are coming in in droves, taking over, and time to stop this is running out. Wilders has said that his movie is a "last warning for the West," and that "if need be, I will personally distribute DVDs in the Dam [central square in Amsterdam]." He has also warned of a "tsunami of Islamisation" in Holland. A wonderful editorial cartoon on the Wilders (hat tip Atlas Shrugs) says it all:

The blogosphere has gotten all over this matter, uncovering information about NS, including this little tidbit at Creeping Sharia:

Update: It appears Network Solutions may have woken up and suspended the domain names for Hizbollah - cached versions availableon that big search engine but “Server Not Found” error on the Hizbollah links.
Let us not forget that Hizbollah is a radical terrorist group, classified as such by the State Department, backed by Iran, and responsible for Israel's last war, two years ago. They don't host the site, but do hold the domain name. As said above, it took them ten years, and a flurry of complaints from me, and countless other bloggers in the last few days, to realize this?

I was just about to post a link to a blog on NS's site, to go leave comments. There had been well over 200 comments earlier, I left one as well. I just checked again, there are zero comments. They took them all down. I attempted to call their number to complain (again, I called and emailed Saturday night, was assured they would get back to me the next day. Nada.), and got a message saying they are 'experiencing higher than usual call volume'. Great work, guys!

1. "Why did you remove a website for TOS violations when there was nothing but a parking page with the text "Coming Soon", and a photo of the Quran?"
She directed my attention to the notice on the page, saying "It is what it is."

2. "Why is an American based company willing to practice preemptive censorship, when there has not yet been any violation?"
Again, she had no answer.

3. "Is it Network Solutions' common practice to remove websites on the day prior to their launch, after months of work have gone into promoting those websites?"
She said she was not aware of such a practice, but she could forward my question upward.

4. I informed her I was in the process of building a new, massive website (true), and that I had planned to host with Network Solutions prior to this debacle (not true).
I asked her why American companies should give Network Solutions their business, when her company has demonstrated their willingness to ruin their customers' livelihoods for the sake of political correctness, and their own bottom line?
She just sort of sputtered, told me she understood my point, and assured me she'd look into it.

5. I asked her why an American based hosting company is more concerned about disgruntled Muslims than protecting free speech on the Internet?
Dead silence.

6. I asked her for contact information for her boss, Roy Dunbar (CEO of Network Solutions), as she was unable to provide me with answers to my questions, and she declined, stating she could not allow every complaint to go directly to him, because he was a busy man.

I informed her I too am a busy man, and that I had just wasted more than a half hour of my time, being shuffled from person to person, trying to get answers she was ultimately unwilling or unable to provide.

While these may appear to be two separate issues, that could not be further from the truth. Wilders has been trying to warn people of how muslims are taking over by both force and by bullying tactics. This episode with Network Solutions has shown that bullying works. They get who knows what sort of threats, and they back down. This has been the exact problem Wilders, Bawer, Pim Fortuyn, Hirsi Ali, and others have been trying to warn about.

This is about more than 'just' free speech and the free flow of information on the internet. This is about our future. The Netherlands, England, and France are just the most visible cases of how their culture is surrendering to the soft jihad. Forcing halal food for everyone in schools, forcing the prison systems to spend enormous amounts of time and money turning the toilets by 90 degrees so they don't face towards or away from Mecca, attacking priests, sharia banking laws, forcing England to legitimize polygamy, and making the taxpayers give them welfare to boot... The list goes on and on.

This is important, folks. Go to the website, call Network Solutions, let them know this is unacceptable.

Yesterday, the U.S. company and proud registrar of Hizbollah.org, Network Solutions decided to take down the website of Geert Wilder’s upcoming provocative short, Fitna. The film’s title comes from an Arabic word meaning severe disagreement or civil war, and exposes, what he believes to be, Islamic militancy's main instigator—the Koran.

Citing the “number of complaints,” the webhost took down the site. Bloggers from Creeping Sharia, raised an embarrassing point: how could it have violated their policy when the film wasn’t yet posted? What could they have found objectionable? A photo of the Koran? Not to be left out, Google has removed the search, fitnathemovie.com, from their search results. The subject matter seems to hot to handle.

These days it seems freedom of speech only applies to communists, terrorists and the porn industry. I mean if “objectionable content” is all it takes to get a website removed, Al Jazeera, that Kos site, and the Huffington Post better look out.

Amazing. On the very day a video of Indonesian cleric Bakar Bashir debuts, calling for violence against non-Muslim tourists whom he likens to “worms, snakes and maggots,” an Islamic critic’s attempt at dialogue is thwarted.

Not exactly, but certainly by association.

Over the weekend, it came to light that Network Solutions, an American internet hosting company, had pulled the plug on Dutch politician Geert Wilders' website. Wilders was set to premier Fitna, a documentary he produced exposing "the intolerant and fascist nature of the Koran."

The British press, meanwhile, outs a radical cleric living in the UK and drawing thousands in welfare benefits (sound familiar? Maybe here?), at the same time he calls for Muslim Brits to attack their country's own soldiers.

[Anjem] Choudary —who once called for the Pope to be executed and described the September 11 hijackers as "magnificent martyrs" — could face arrest under anti-terror laws for his evil ranting on the tape, which was passed to the News of the World.

After hearing his latest inflammatory remarks, terror experts asked: "What more does this man need to do before he is locked up?"

Choudary, 41, was taped lecturing a secret meeting in west London earlier this month. On it he urges his Islamic followers to persuade would-be terrorists to sign up for killing campaigns.

The bearded mullah describes non-Muslims as "the enemy" and tells his sympathisers they should brainwash at least TEN Britons a month into becoming al-Qaeda supporters.

He also urges his clan to preach that:

FIGHTING jihad \ against Western society is an obligation.

BRITISH Muslims should travel abroad to fight our troops.

TERRORIST wannabes should "put fear into the hearts" of non-Muslims in the UK and spread al-Qaeda messages.

Choudray's lecture tour was launched with the aim of teaching Islamic extremist recruiting teams how to win new members and brainwash them into backing the mass-murdering terror group.

Charming. But not nearly as much as this report from an Australian source.

ISLAMIC cleric Abu Bakar Bashir has returned to his hardline rhetoric with a call for followers to beat up Western tourists and for young Muslims to die as martyrs.

In the sermon, organised by an Islamic youth organisation and delivered a few kilometres from the home village of convicted Bali bombers Amrozi and Mukhlas, Bashir likened tourists in Bali to "worms, snakes, maggots", and specifically referred to the immorality of Australian infidels.

The address was caught on video by an Australian university student.

"The youth movement here must aspire to a martyrdom death," said the cleric, who was convicted of conspiracy over the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians, but was later cleared and released from prison.

"The young must be first at the front line - don't hide at the back. You must be at the front, die as martyrs and all your sins will be forgiven. This is how to achieve forgiveness."

Observers said the sermon's content was a clear indication of what many terrorism academics have noted - that the accused spiritual head of Jemaah Islamiah has been emboldened by his release from prison last year after serving 26 months for conspiracy in relation to the Bali blasts.

Back to Network Solutions. The Jawa Report has taken the time to contact them and was kind enough to post the conversation, along with a small call for action. Sorry, no effigy burning, angry rioting, beheading, praise of Hitler, or calls for the death of Network Solutions are included. Only their phone number.

I just spent 30-40 minutes on the phone with Network Solutions (based in PA), complaining about their removal of the fitnathemovie.com website.
Ultimately, I was only able to get as high a woman named Shannon, the Assistant to the Executive Officer (his name is Roy Dunbar), who gave me a polite brush off, without actually answering any of my questions.

But I was making her very uncomfortable...I could actually hear her blanching over the phone!
I explained why I was contacting her (she was already aware of Fitna), and when I was done explaining my gripe (forcefully), she asked me if I had any specific questions for her.
So I asked her some specific questions, and informed her they were for an article I was writing for a popular conservative blog (where upon her voice became even gloomier)...

1. "Why did you remove a website for TOS violations when there was nothing but a parking page with the text "Coming Soon", and a photo of the Quran?"
She directed my attention to the notice on the page, saying "It is what it is."

I informed her I too am a busy man, and that I had just wasted more than a half hour of my time, being shuffled from person to person, trying to get answers she was ultimately unwilling or unable to provide.

I informed her I knew she was not personally responsible for this debacle (I had been pretty tough on her), and I apologized for what I was going to have to do.

I explained that, unlike radical Muslims, law abiding citizens did not have the option of issuing threats or becoming violent, thus our only recourse is to become such a pain in the ass that companies such as Network Solutions find offending Muslims preferable to the time and resources wasted dealing with us.

I told her I would be posting the gist of our conversation online, at a popular site, and that she was in for a bad week. I really hope I'm right.

2. "Why is an American based company willing to practice preemptive censorship, when there has not yet been any violation?"
Again, she had no answer.

3. "Is it Network Solutions' common practice to remove websites on the day prior to their launch, after months of work have gone into promoting those website?"

While I do not share the views and opinions of Dutch MP Geert Wilders and I regard some of those opi

While I do not share the views and opinions of Dutch MP Geert Wilders and I regard some of those opinions not only as unacceptable but outright outrageous, it is my firm conviction that Mr. Wilders has every right to express those opinions. It may not be wise on a pragmatical point of view to launch a film which is certain to attract even violent protests and demonstrations but launching a film like that is an indisputable civil right of Mr. Wilmers. Freedom of speech is the most valuable right we have and tolerating expressed opinions that do not match with our own opinions is a mandatory duty of every human on the Earth.

I find it extremely odd that Network Solutions have chosen to suspend a domain set up by Geert Wilders to launch his film Fitna:

This site has been suspended while Network Solutions is investigating whether the site's content is in violation of the Network Solutions Acceptable Use Policy. Network Solutions has received a number of complaints regarding this site that are under investigation. For more information about Network Solutions Acceptable Use Policy visit the following URL: http://www.networksolutions.com/legal/aup.jsp

The complaints cited by Network Solutions seem to address something which nobody has yet seen. The site seems to have consisted so far only of an image of the cover of a Koran on a black background with the text: "Coming soon: Fitna". That can hardly be regarded as offensive by anybody.

Most of the people protesting against the Mohammad cartoons have actually never seen them. I would not state an opinion about Fitna before I have seen the film. Let us just watch it first!

Edit: I spotted a clip (via Befria Media) with Geert Wilders commenting the fuzz around his film. This is the first time ever I recall agreeing with him.

...and by that I mean me getting duped worse than a blind kid gambling on his vision.

I decided to man up and be a true tech geek. I decided to buy a web domain.

It was going to be suhweet. It would be the home of all my ramblamatic life nonsenseries that I periodically push as socially acceptable viewpoints. I'd give it a great name, "CollinCummings.com", and every Tom, Dick, and Larry would come to see what brilliance I conjured in those hours between sleep and awakened consciousness.

Like any good and faithful idealist, I planned it all out in my mind, and mentally skipped to Network Solutions as I (once again the blind kid metaphor) blindly punched my desired domain into their evil form. Grr, that form.

To make a long story short, the domain was available so I waited to buy. I check it a few more times and finally decided to commit myself to the small 2 digit loss for a beefy new website.

Once I was ready to check out, I saw the price was all of a sudden $35. I'm cool headed, so I didn't panic. But I did get an idea.

Checked sitelutions... not available.

Checked Go Daddy... not available.

Checked Network Solutions again... available, but now it's $40.

So now I have the option to rant to you about how that's dishonest, ridiculous business that should not be engaged, even on our super unregulated internet. I'm not going to do that so I can save people's eyes from a text fest.

I'm going to say this much tho... it is the most unlegit, sad, and self serving business practice I have ever seen. I hope they get nabbed and Enron'ed (that's right, I just made that a verb). Since when has it been good business to exploit your customers as much as you can to make things happen for you (*ahem communism*).

Oh, and in the end. I did buy a domain. I got the .net from Sitelutions. I'm too much of a freedom fighter to support that.
