Exhuming Bob:
Chronicles IX, Pensees 8:
New Morning
by
R.E. Prindle
     The chapter New Morn

Exhuming Bob:

Chronicles IX, Pensees 8:

New Morning

by

R.E. Prindle

The chapter New Morning opens with an interesting comparison. Bob had just returned to Woodstock after his father's funeral in the summer of 1968. The association of New Morning with the death of his father in itself presents an interesting psychological mental state. A letter was waiting for him from who he considers one of the three great American poets, Archibald MacLeish. MacLeish was just coming off his Broadway triumph J.B. In the letter he asks Bob and Sara to call on him in his Connecticut home to discuss a musical collaboration on his new play. A jewish father dies; a goy 'father' appears.

As Bob explains, Father Abram is somewhat dull, thinking that an artist must be a painter. The notion seems to be that Bob is slightly ashamed of his father for not understanding the distinction between pictures and the artistic soul. Thus contrasting with dull Abram is the brilliant intellectual poet-artist, Archibald MacLeish. Bob is quickly on intimate terms referring to the Poet Laureate of America as Archie.

If you've never read Poe's last story Landor's Cottage you might like to compare that description to Bob's of MacLeish's home. While we never meet Poe's Landor Bob does introduce us to Archie. Coming from small town Hibbing Bob seems to be overwhelmed by the splendor of MacLeish's dwelling place. Sure sounded good to me. So as Bob left Abram at the rosy fingered Dawn of his New Morning, MacLeish presents himself as the sun rising above the horizon. But it's a Black Sun. MacLeish does not walk on the sunny side of the street. He's dark, as anyone who writes a play commentary on the Book of Job must necessarily be.

His new play is called Scratch. One presumes after Old Scratch, The Devil. Bob quotes some lines of Archie's character Scratch, p.124:

I know there is evil in the world- essential evil, not the opposite of good or the defective of good but something to which good itself is an irrelevance- a fantasy. No one can live as long as I have, hear what I have heard and not know that. I know too- more precisely- I am ready to believe that there may be something in the world-someone, if you prefer- that purposes evil, that intends it...powerful nations suddenly, without occasion, without apparent cause...decay. Their children turn against them, their families disintegrate.

The strength of the insight is too strong for Bob at that precise psychological moment but Archie has given him a hint of a reality that Bob will realize all too soon. Perhaps in reference to Abe and Archie Bob meets Frank Sinatra Jr. at the Rainbow Room. Frank, Jr. nursing one of the same travails as Bob asks him after discussing Frank Sr.: What do you do when that father turns out to be a son-of-a-bitch.

Well, yes, you've got an identity problem, don't you? Bob has always had an identity problem. What started out bad has taken a turn for the worse. He wanted to be Bob Dylan but now being Bob Dylan has turned out to be a son-of-a-bitch, a burden Bob...well, just plain Bob, cant' bear. He's learning about this inherent evil of life Archie is talking about.

If you've never experienced what Bob is telling you it will be hard to understand. I've suffered through a mild dose of them blues, enough to give me understanding, but nothing compared to Bob. He wakes up and someone is standing in his bedroom watching he and Sara sleep. That gives you a start. But if Bob thought he had identity problems what kind of problems does some poor fish have who literally wants to get inside your skin have. Walk a mile in your shoes like Toby. Everybody want something from you that you don't have to give. And I mean something. You by your success have emasculated them, Bob's success. So they in turn want your dick and balls. They want ot carry them around in their pocket to give them what they lack. 'Hey, you know what I've got in my pocket, look, Bob Dylan's dick and balls.'

You want to know what emasculation is? Bob tells you. The Sheriff of Woodstock tells him that if someone is scrambling over his roof and falls off Dylan will be legally responsible. That does something to your mind. The Sheriff tells Bob that if any of these crazies attack him and he defends himself he'll be the guy going to jail. That one sends a few synapses seeking new routes through the brain. That one did happen to me. Might as well have left the planet, the Sheriff just took your dick and balls.

Bob is now learning first hand of the evil in Archie's world. Damn that's rough.

Even then Bob couldn't make his lyrics dark enough for Archie although, now this is funny, Bob did use them in his album New Morning. What does that say about a new morning?

Bob just couldn't get used to being Bob Dylan. Being Bob was OK but being Bob Dylan was tough. They were everywhere. You couldn't even run much less hide.

As Bob tells us he was riding down the highway with Robbie Robertson when Robbie asked him: 'Where are you going to take it now?' 'Take what?' Bob asks in return. 'Pop music.' Robbie naively replies.

Bob is flabbergasted but who can blame Robbie? For the last six years Bob had been calling the shots, getting booed and selling records, renovating and reinvigorating folk music, taking folk music electric, electrifying rock. Why shouldn't Robbie think something mega revolutationary was brewing in Bob's brain? Being Bob was easy, being Bob Dylan was damn near impossible. Those three fathers, Abe, Archie and Frank Sr. Bob was learning something about the inherent evil of living.

His new mentor, Archie, thinking perhaps that Bob was Bob Dylan pushes him to sharpen and darken the lyrics to the songs he's written for Archie. Bob just like after Blonde On Blonde has taken it as far as it can go. He opts out on Archie. Two fathers down but there's still that Big Guy In The Sky but that Bob will seek a little farther down the road.

New Morning was a good chapter. I could empathize. Current events are giving me a new slant on the inherent evil in the world too. Heads up.

Standing at the open door, I breathe the bright new day - the garden, bursting with fresh greenery; a blackbird amongst a mass of pink roses, pouring out his song; a gentle background chorus of 1000 small birds, and a raucous flurry, as the mother gull nesting on our chimney worries over her chicks. Yesterday's raindrops are sparkling on leaves and petals. Next door, our neighbour is whistling softly as he tends his sweet peas.

Father of night, Father of day,
Father, who taketh the darkness away,
Father, who teacheth the bird to fly,
Builder of rainbows up in the sky,
Father of loneliness and pain,
Father of love and Father of rain.

Father of day, Father of night,
Father of black, Father of white,
Father, who build the mountain so high,
Who shapeth the cloud up in the sky,
Father of time, Father of dreams,
Father, who turneth the rivers and streams.

Father of grain, Father of wheat,
Father of cold and Father of heat,
Father of air and Father of trees,
Who dwells in our hearts and our memories,
Father of minutes, Father of days,
Father of whom we most solemnly praise.

Nice, isn't it?

At first glance, a flutist leading a band seemed unimaginable to me in my myopic view of popular music. Seeing Ji-Mob (aka Jérome Drû)Tuesday changed this misconception by his changing genres effortlessly keeping a full audience at New Morning on its feet to keep up with the full-force sound of rock, jazz, funk, and experimental orchestrations.

Frankly the orchestrations that took about a minute to find its place. Starting off with compositions that were more jazz/ funk oriented.
However, with the dynamisme of invited guests Sandra Nkake, Karl the Voice and Allonymous on vocals those compositions were pretty straightforward. However when invited guest Stephane Belmondo a trumpet player who also delivers playing conch shells, you knew the show might head into uncharted territory. During the transitional movement that leaned on the more instrumental side, even Ji-mob would tear apart his flute and play withboth parts detached. He joined the scat dance by also adding vocals to the uncategorizable music bolstered by his team of vocalists.

The show lasted almost 3 hours at the end of which the audience was on its feet as they witnessed the mantra finale of « Power to the People » that seemed so dynamic the show could've continued into the wee hours. All in all, I have new respect for the RUN DMC t-shirted Ji-mob and the impressive power he weilds with a possibly underrated instrument in pop music.

Ji-mob will be touring around Europe in support of his new album Power To The People, out on Comet Records.
Ji-Mob sera en tournée en Europe pour soutenir la vente de son nouvel album, Power To The Peopl, disponible sur Comet Records.

For a dead guy, Ronald Reagan sure gets around. The ghost of Reagan haunted the earliest Republican debates. Every plank of the GOP Presidential hopefuls' stump speeches were "in the spirit of Ronald Reagan." Or so they said. Our Reagan-loving electorate even coaxed a sad-eyed, bulldog-faced actor into the running because they were convinced this tough guy from Hollywood might be the heir apparent to the old twenty-mule-team Dutch. Now, even the Democrats are getting in on the act. For this last week, Barack Obama referenced Ronald Reagan with neither a sneer, snicker nor an eye roll. In fact, Obama's remarks about the Gipper fell just short of full-blown praise. You see, Reagan was a change agent. Reagan was an optimist. Always electric, but never fiery. Always calm, but never weak. Reagan was not some cynical Karl Rove creation. He was the real deal. An icon of hope. A promoter of big dreams. And Obama thinks that America is once again ready for a new morning. We'll see tonight if the folks in Nevada don't agree.

It's funny Sandra, a fellow blogger, and I have been playing email tag for a couple of months now. Having seen her numerous guest appearances with Allonymous , and Frank Biyong, I was intrigued enough by her artistry to get to know more about her. Like my own mother, a clean-shaven Sandra chided me on my big hair, when we actually met for the first time at Lisa Spada’s Soulissime concert on June 9th at Canal Opus. What follows is a rhetorical piece that I feel best summarizes my thoughts on Sandra, and what I hope will be her long and fruitful career as an international entertainer.

Open Letter to Ms. Sandra Nkaké’s future record label

Dear Sir or Madam:
Madame, Monsieur,

I am writing out of concern and respect for the fiercely sophisticated and talented unsigned singer/songwriter/actress, Ms. Sandra Nkaké (pronounced ENKAHKAY). A few months ago, I came across small animated.gifs promoting the Radio Nova hit single “Sex Friend” produced by respected Blue Note Records musician Booster, with Sandra as lead vocalist. While the song speaks volumes to the commonplace commitment shy tactics employed by many westernized young urban adults. The online promotion of the song compels me to question whether or not Paris’ new diva in the making is getting her fair shake.

It’s no secret Sandra, French-Cameroonian, is distinguishing herself from other soul singers around the capital with her fearlessly sexy, and at times politically outspoken performances. She easily entices her audience with her wide-ranging vocal abilities, with the concert at New Morning last week being no exception. Sandra’s energy onstage was infectious, never limiting herself to singing exclusively in one language even in the same song. Her acting background was so transparent, with each movement perfectly articulated with the rhythmic and bass-heavy music of her backing band. Sandra continually challenges herself by collaborating with edgy, and even experimental musicians such as Ji Mob (the night’s first act), helping take her rich soul-funk sound to the next level.

Now with all of these elements working overwhelmingly in her favor, my question is: Why was the “Sex Friend” single promoted with a white woman’s face, despite the fact that Sandra is to put it mildly, statuesque? Having developed new media marketing campaigns for major-label artists, I think using Sandra’s image could have inspired more sophisticated and original marketing come-ons, than those of the clichéd airbrushed whiteface actually used.

Although Sandra is in a committed relationship and a mother of two, the song could have been used to spark any number of discussions with folks worldwide on any number of issues related to health and sexuality. Without perpetuating the myth of the oversexed black temptress, the song could have easily been used as a safe-sex anthem to promote responsibility and safe sex in Africa, for example, where sexual empowerment among women of color remains an anamoly. Just an idea...

When I asked Sandra about the image, she mentioned it had happened so quickly, that it was already beyond her. For me, however, it conjured up notorious incidents in popular American musical history of Martha Wash’s face being censored for her being overweight; or worse still, Elvis Presley’s chart topping success with “Hound Dog”, originally penned by the blues-woman Big Mama Thornton, who died in obscurity.

With my eyebrow half-cocked, I hope that Sandra’s future label- as she is still a free agent-doesn’t shy away from marketing her in all of her glory. I implore them to not just capitalize on adolescent sex appeal that made Britney Spears a pop idol, or pigeon hole her into the respectable irrelevance of Des’ree. Sandra is a multi-faceted performer who deserves to be marketed internationally as a sexually empowered woman with elegance, intelligence and vocal chops to match, who just happens to be black.

Sincerely,
Veuillez agréer, Madame, Monsieur, l’expression de mes sentiments distingués.

I really should not have to school you folks on the fine musicality of Brooklyn-based afro-beat band

I really should not have to school you folks on the fine musicality of Brooklyn-based afro-beat band, Antibalas. Luckily last-minute tickets surfaced and I was able to attend the show at New Morning May 29th. Even though the majority of the band members looked like they cross the East River on the L-train and shop at Beacon’s Closet, they seriously play like they are direct from Lagos.

As expected, the music was rhythmic and upbeat, and of course politically relevant. Jibes were made at two of the world's worst presidents, which, to me, seemed to help the American performers level the playing field with the French crowd. Still despite pessimistic politics, the crowd was a direct reflection of the band's high energy show, with shiny, happy people dancing to the afro-funky beat.

After the concert, I touched base with tenor sax player, Stuart Bogie, who gave it his all that night. He alluded to an interesting issue that seems to be of universal concern to young musicians these days: unemployment. Later, I chatted with baritone sax player, Martin Perna (pronounced Marteen, Spanish-style) who went into greater detail about the plight of NYC indie artists. The Austin-based musician confirmed what my college friend Kasmore has been telling me about how folks are running scared in the face of an increasingly corporatized NYC. Martin made the conscious decision to leave the urban grind for Mexico and now Austin, where professional musicians there have free health-insurance. So rare, but much needed for the US (like yesterday!!!!).

Catch the Antibalas guys as they wrap up their European tour, and head to Canada this summer. Their latest CD, Security, is in stores now.
