Last week, I happened to be in Boston and visited the Museum of Fine Arts. The most impressive section was undoubtedly the one on European paintings, especially the ones by some of the leading lights of impressionism - Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir and Paul Gauguin's Where Do We Come From. Watching me gaze at Gauguin's masterpiece for a long time, one of the security guards in the museum actually came up to the painting, read the information next to it and then watched the painting for many minutes. I might add that the security guards were mainly African Americans, while the visitors were overwhelmingly Caucasian.

Also very impressive was the section on Asian history. Three things struck me in particular:

The Lion and the Buddha are probably the two most common icons in Ancient Asia- the Lion dominates motifs from Iran to China, and the Buddha from Afghanistan to Japan

The Lion in ancient Persia was a symbol of both strength as well as ... love, which explains why Ghalib chose Asad as his nome de plume (Asad means a lion)

In Buddhist mythology, the Bodhisattva is not just a previous re- incarnation of the Buddha, but also a person who gives up his quest for nirvana in order to help others achieve nirvana. This is a deeply moving aspect, and deserving of more contemplation.

You can watch the pictures that I took there (178 of them!). Some are a little out of focus and hence little blurred, and of course even the most clear ones do not substitute for the actual stuff.

"Bench At Katheryn's", 11x14 Oil on Canvas Board, by Rog Lyngaas, 15Jul08 & 18jun08.

If you recall, I reported I scraped a plein air painting completely on the 18th of June. I have never done this before where I scraped and then repainted it; in this case a month later. This is the repainting result. I am happy now that I can say that there is enough red in it this time. I cannot call this a plein air painting or even an alla prima painting, but it was fun to do.

Bench at Katheryn's, refers to the benches in Katheryn Albertson's park in downtown Boise. This park is part of the enormous green belt along the river in Boise. This was the first painting I did with my new Open Box M panel holder - Pochade Box... my birthday present to myself. Here I am [below] painting on location this very painting.

I would like to remind everyone that there is a painting in this blog that has a naked pregnant woman hidden in it. The title of this post should give you a good clue. There is a prize, if you figure out which painting has this figure in it. You win my smile.

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="240" caption="(above) 2005. Working on paintings at 2 am. " width="240" height="180" />[/caption]

What is my story behind the curly cued willows that grace hundreds of homes worldwide and garnered such acclaim?

And so it goes . . .

It was in the beginning of 2005. I was overworking myself, burning the candle at both ends, so to speak. I found myself constantly nodding off at the dinner table or theaters, and had a scary visit to the ER. My art was successful after only a year of it's beginning, and I had been working 18-20 hour days to keep up with demand.

One particular evening, I began to start obnoxiously doodling on the canvas.

The exhaustion was catching up to me, and I stood there, stressed. Disconnected. I had no idea what to create. And I didn't honestly want to. I was creating what people wanted. I loved to paint. And normally the ideas just come to me instantly. Miraculous unorchestrated creations being made each time.

This time, however . . .nothing.

I wanted to quit so badly and never paint again, or at least go on a sabbatical for a couple of years. I even attempted to do so around that time.

Right then, looking down at my comfortable abstract, I began to make a mess of it.

- First a few circles here and there.

- Then, swirling lines extending from the bottom of the canvas to the top.

- Repeat of more circles floating from the "branches".

At first, it looked like a alien vegetable was taking dominion over my poor sweet, innocent painting. What is this hideous beast creature-plant thing doing on my elegant work of art?! Somebody get a broom! It was a total takeover, and an eyesore at that.

[caption id="attachment_409" align="alignright" width="144" caption="(above)2004 Natasha Wescoat abstract featuring early development of the trees."][/caption]

Normally, circles and geometric work were a natural stable in my designs. I started painting more recognizable work. Paintings that would be classified as representative work.

But this time, warfare between an alien plant and my circular heaven. No, in two hours, there was this spackled mess. I came to the conclusion I had made a tree. It reminded me much of Klimt's work and I felt honored by that. Perhaps an unconcious tribute to him, I thought. But, I felt like the circles didn't make ANY sense being on a tree.

There is no reminiscence whatsoever..of leaves! I hated the swirly mess. I jokingly said, "I am going to burn this crap", "Who would want this?"

Ironically, to my suprise, ALOT of people.

I listed the piece on ebay along with my usual work, and the trees were being snatched up instead. Recieving unanimous emails of exciting feedback regarding the trees, I realized that there was something here. I would talk about the series with others, and they'd reassure me, "Most of the work we artists create, people absolutely adore. And it's more than likely the art we hate the most. The work we feel is our worst. Every. Single. Time." Their statement held true. Again and again. The trees began to grow on me, (no pun intended) and I really enjoyed creating them. It was fun to evolve and improve my designs until there were several different kinds of trees.

[caption id="attachment_410" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="#1 Best Selling Print - "With The Waves" by Natasha Wescoat"][/caption]

Because of this harrowing time, this one particular evening, I have developed the Jeweled Tree series that has won awards, and gained attention around the world. That's surreal and humbling. Out of the hardest, the darkest times of my life, something so bright and whimsical and happy has been created. Like a pheonix out of the ashes. I'm glad I was able to create something that makes so many happy!

That is my origin story of the Jeweled Trees series.

Matty Byloos paints ghostly images of abandoned tract homes. Most of his subjects were demolished in the mid -1970s to make room for an expansion at Los Angeles International Airport, LAX. Byloos houses appear in a state of crisp realism and then set adrift. The effect is turbulent and visually luscious. Matty Byloos paintings on on display through Saturday at the Sandroni Rey Galery, 2762 S. La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA.

I've been really inspired to paint lately.  This is trouble for Alan as I'm starting to gather quite the collection of brushes and paint. Â

Side story: A few years ago when he accompanied me to Joann's... he almost fell over when he saw the hundreds of rubber stamps available.  Seeing the look on his face I right then and there swore to him I would never take up *rubber-stamping as I knew once I started I would need them all, and they were a) way too expensive and b) would take up too much space. Now the poor guy is going to have canvases and brushes to deal with, but he also has more movies and comics than I have scrapbooking stuff, so right now I think it's ok.Â

*Please note I was careful to say Rubber stamping... because after all, the new clear arcylic stamps are much more economical and easy to store... and easier to hide from husbands who thought you said you wouldn't take up stamping. Â

I am really enjoying exploring this new creative outlet and finding my own style and am greatly influenced by Elsie and Donna... I love them as scrapbookers - but I also REALLY love their paintings.Â

And you know, once you let go of thinking you have to create a Renoir, and just paint what's fun and meaningful to you, it is so freeing! So with that here's one I did in an evening earlier this week.Â

This canvas is about 5 X 7... staying small for now. ;)

Well it is finally here - this weekend I get to attend CHA! I'm so excited... both to see all the new products, and to actually be amongst so many people who are as giddy about it as I am. I will have camera in tow and hope to get some good pictures to share.Â

I hope you have a wonderful weekend - and thanks for stopping by!

Sunday 29th June 2008

Miranda do Douro

I spent a lot of yesterday evening and of the day today trying to catch up a little bit with all the ink sketches I have done along the trip, putting some watercolour... I managed to finish some, and it is a good feeling, but of course I did some new ones in the morning as we rode to the town on the bikes, and they too demand colour...
We spent some hours outside with the bikes today, first by the medieval part of the town, then by a little river which the town has arranged in a lovely way. Bike tracks, bridges, and a great cafe by the river, where I spoke to a Portuguese man, the cafe owner, again one of the ones who spent most of his life abroad, 34 years in Paris. He loves France, but he loves his country too, and he agreed with me that the Spaniards have changed a lot, the word „arrogant“ coming up some different times.
Kevin and me are trying not to fall too much into this antipathy with the Spaniards as we live there and for me it is a basic need that I like the people from the country I live in. But it becomes more and more difficult. Today for example, I was sitting on a little wall, sketching, quite apart from the crowd of Spanish tourists who had invaded the church. Suddenly one older guy headed in my direction, shouting all the time:
!I knew it, I knew it!“
As he was closer to me, he had a very superficial, furtive glance at my sketching book and then looking at me, he repeated, again and again:
„I knew it, I knew it!“
I really disliked that man, he had a very arrogant face, and manners as if he were the King of the world. I asked him:
„What did you know?“
„I knew that you were drawing!“
What a deep knowledge, really!!!
Then he said:
„Very good, very good, you are a great artist!“
and went away again. I could swear he was not aware at all of what I was drawing, the glance he had at it was much too short.
Well, I can´t help it, I hate this behaviour. The disturbing, and the superficiality. It makes me feel sick, really. In the 4 weeks since we’ve been here, there was not one Portuguese person disturbing me when I was drawing. Sometimes I could feel that they were curious, but they always controlled their curiosity and left me alone.

By the way we were visiting the church too, and were amazed by a strange, small statue in a glass class. It featured a little man, with some green court clothes on, and some kind of melon hat, and a lot of little fancy dresses were hanging around him in the case. A very strange thing for a church, considering too the fact that the little man had a Japanese face. We were wondering what that might be and exactly at that moment the Spanish group with their guide approached the little man. I stood there a while, listening to what the Portuguese guide had to tell about the statue. The story was quite hilarious, in fact extremely naive, but told in a very serious way. The little man was a little boy, who appeared every time when the Spanish armies wanted to invade Miranda. The little boy always went to alert the small military presence who were living in this fort here, who themselves went to Porto and Lisbon to get the big Portuguese armies. In the meanwhile the little boy was standing at the entry of the town and after a while the Spanish armies decided to go away, conscious that they had no chance to invade the town with the little boy standing there!!!! As the big Portuguese armies finally arrived, the Spaniards were gone for a long time already!
The little boy has become a symbol of protection of the town and the pregnant woman pray to him to protect their new-born sons (notice, not their girls!). The town changes the clothes of the little boy according to the seasons.
And the melon hat? Well, at that time the Portuguese were following the English fashion and the little boy had a melon hat. But the first hat he had was made out of cardboard as he had no money to let a real one come from England, and this is the reason why they called the little boy:
„The cardboard Jesus“
I won´t repeat the word which Kevin said as I told him the story, but of course he could not help feeling very proud about the part concerning the English fashion!!!
Well, if I had belonged to the group I would have asked the guide:
„And why the Japanese face?“

By the way there is another thing which seems to be worth a series of photos or drawings in Portugal. Unfortunately I noticed it only some days ago: the little sugar bags they serve with the coffee are always quite beautiful and interesting. Today by the cafe at the river, I found them simply great. On a bright red background, is written:
„Make somebody feel special and dedicate him a book...“
and under that line is featured a book, always a different one of course. What an idea, isn´t it?
Really the Portuguese amaze me with their ideas. You can feel this creativity everywhere and all the time. Nerxt time when we will come to Portugal, I will certainly go to some museums and look how they paint, as I have no idea! I wonder if this creativity is reflected in their art too.

So, it is later in the evening now, about 10h PM, we will soon have our dinner outside, again, by candle light. By the way, it was funny tonight as a little wind came up. The awning outisde was making such noises that I had the feeling to be in a sailing boat... I quite loved it!
