The longest Hindu festival that continues for nine consecutive nights following the day of the new moon in Ashwin, in praise of Lord Rama. Continuous chanting from the Ramayana, along with evening performances from the episodes of His life, is held for all nine days. The last four are associated also with the worship of Goddess Durga (Durga Puja), the female principle of energy of the universe, to celebrate the victory of good over evil. Rama is said to have worshipped the Goddess, seeking Her blessings in order to overpower the evil force of Ravana, the abductor of His beloved wife Sita.

The Devi, simply means the Goddess and the Hindus have imagined her as a kind and giving mother and also as a strong, at times ruthless fighter. So like her many faces, the Devi has many names, ranging from the benevolent Parvati to the beautiful, golden skinned Gauri and the dark and ferocious Kali. The goddess is the fecund earth and a symbol of fertility and she is also the divine force, the shakti of the powers of Shiva.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Devi: Worship The Great Goddess, The Divine Mother"][/caption]

In the beginning the goddess was worshiped as the consort of a number of gods as they were the Shakti, the divine strength and cosmic power of their spouses. A god was visualized as inactive and transcendent and it was the goddess who was active and immanent. Somehow it is as the consort of Shiva that the Devi gained the most prominence and with it the maximum number of myths. The generous but reclusive Shiva allowed his consort to capture the limelight when it came to the important business of killing demons. The icon of the Ardhanariswara, half Shiva and half Shakti is a graphic portrayal of this union of divine forces.

Hindu Goddesses Statues

The worship of the Devi is intimately intertwined with the worship of Shiva. For instance, in South India, Shiva is believed to be a passive force that is energized only when he is combined with the active shakti of the Goddess they call Amman. And so every temple to Shiva has its separate shrine dedicated to the Amman. She is often portrayed with the physical characteristics that also belong to Shiva. Durga also has a third eye, she wields the trishula, the trident and at times she has matted hair and like Shiva possesses a destructive and angry face. Both Shiva, and the Devi have the Ugra roop, the angry persona and the Saumya roop, the benign persona and this is unique to these two enigmatic deities.

The worship of the Devi, especially as Durga and Kali is the most prevalent in Eastern India, in Bengal, and Assam. Here the warrior goddess receives devotions in her own temples and has her own festivals where Shiva is just a token presence. The Devi is mother and protector who even has a family that comes down to earth with her and it is in Bengal that one finds books of praise and hymns composed for her. One of the finest poets who wrote on the Devi as Kali was Ramprasad and his hymns are sung even today.

To be consciously in your "right place at the right time" requires a genuine release of egoic desire: the placing of one's imagined self at the center of life, while trying to manipulate thought, other beings, and events to manifest some sort of pre-conceived outcome.

The idea of "creating one's reality" is only creative when one's process is awakened and in touch with Shakti, the divine energy of creativity and manifestation. In truth, we never really know if we will wake up the next morning; every day and every way is an act of trust and abandon. Awakening to Shakti need by no means eradicate the ego, for its sense of separation and desire for experience is also a part of her play and has its own gifts to offer.

For too long, however, we have been trained to use ideas about our life to protect us from life itself: our projections, imaginings, and thought constructs build a cocoon that enfolds us in incompleteness. To open to the raw energy of presence and to the intelligent and beauteous unfolding in every moment is to leave the cocoon, and to feel so alive and vital, so connected with each and all, that there is no need for living in contraction, doubt, and hesitation. Unfolding one's wings and opening to "the Way" does not preclude pain or suffering, for these are purifying fires that burn away our misalignments and clear us deeply. If the starting point is faith, then we can relax and know that we are always in the hands of a living and loving universe.

Opening freely to the fullness of presence, rather than dissolving the structures that support us (families, jobs, houses, communities), gives these structures the space to renew themselves--to morph in accordance with what it best for ALL.

Since we do not know what is best for us (not to mention for anyone else) we have a choice. We can continue with one effort after another to conjure up scenarios that ought to make us happy, or we can be happy just to be here, and let that joy reveal the path that we take. Such joy is real, and its path is miraculous, a way of grace and authenticity that ever affirms that we are here to share in the sweetness of the Creative Flow of Reality.

Announcing our New Website: http://rickjarow.com - a comprehensive information station for the work of life alignment and manifestation, a place to "check in" (instead of checking out), and a place of remembrance. Also the Alchemy of Abundance BLOG (http://alchemyofabundance.wordpress.com), a docking station for shared inspiration, information, and renewal.

Announcing this year's Advanced Manifestation Gathering at Ananda Ashram in Monroe, New York on November 22, 23rd. In the midst of political and financial chaos - a calm and creative center, we continue to gather together. We become stronger. We claim the lives we were meant to live ("It is never too late to be what you might have been" - George Eliot). We open to the Creative Source that can move our hearts, transform our circumstances, and guide us to our peace.

[ posted to kundalist 9/21/08 ]

In this video Gabriel Cousens makes some statements regarding the power of raw foods to alter consciousness. And he offers tons of scientific data on how alive raw foods are versus cooked. And any one who follows a raw food diet reports an increase in 'energy'.

So the questions are:

* is food an indirect way to get prana?
* is the increase in energy reported on a raw food diet symptomatic of kundalini awakening?
* is Cousens as a Kundalini Shaktipat guru more adept than the other 99% of them who are (probably) cooked food eaters?
* what 'state of consciousness' do raw fooders achieve that cooked fooders do not? In India, the keyword for heightened consciousness is 'sattvic', not 'raw'. Raw food can be tamasic, rajasic, or sattvic. In most raw food diets I see an attempt to recreate the cooked tamasic and rajasic diet. At 7:55 Cousens says that raw fooders they become filled with understanding and wisdom and more of a connection to the 'Living Field' --- but the living field is far more comprehensive than waking state annamaya kosha consciousness. All actions, everywhere in the universe occur via shakti and one who feels this is said to have experienced Brahman, the all-pervading changeless divine.

Personally: I have experienced tons of difficulties on cooked food since starting with raw food about 10 years ago. I have been beaten into a raw diet. And a simple non-gourmet raw diet. Nonetheless, I am not a naturist raw foodist. I am a transcendentalist and practitioner of a kundalini-based meditation.
My opinion is the same as what Klaus Wolfram stated in 'Fruits: Best of All Foods' http://static.livingcosmos.org/fruitarian/wolfram-fruit --- all food harms the body, raw food simply does less so.

As transcendentalist, I see the animal drives (food, sex, fear, sleep) as something to be mastered, not celebrated. Thus, I am a minority in the raw foods community, which tends to see Nature and God as one in the same. And all natural acts are godly acts.

Creating a healthy body is nice, but if it leads to a body fetish, then dropping the body (at death) will be an unpleasant experience. It is best to know exactly what you are, where you are, and what you are capable of instead of knowing exactly what a temporal body needs.

Anybody out there?No?Ohh I see you.Delurk.Delurk now.

Didnt have net access last two weeks. You know how bad that was?Like Tulsi Virani without her mangalsutra. So went and bought a plug and play connection and now I am going to have a very bad case of typing diarrhea. First bullet points update.

We finished the factory stint. It was as exciting as a walk in Thar desert at mid noon. We learnt valuable lesson that even "happening" places like Goa can be dampner if you go there a) during monsoons b) with 0 company.

Then we came to the famous, much bandied about rural stint. This has resulted in life changing experience for certain BLTs, for others it means watching Splitsvilla on MTV at the chummery (which can be life changing in its own way). of course I am no way hinting I am doing the latter.

I am involved with the Shakti program. For the entire day I work with women who earn anywhere between 500-1500 for a month of hardwork. They are further saddled with alcoholic, non working husbands or maybe are widows with 2-3 daughters approaching marriageable age. I come home and watch Carrie and her gang on SATC in their world of Jimmy Choos and casual sex. Difficult to believe often its the same specie I am watching.

My project involves raising micro-finance for these enterprenuers. However bank managers are far more interested in my education qualifications and how much I earn. Very very dicey playground that.

I get a car to travel so no more hanging onto dear life on trekkers, buses or cattle. Colored glasses in the car gives you its own moments in our gaons. When balding uncle at red light decides to look into the glass and felao haath on remaining chaman, give shape to his teeka, and settle hair on moustache. After this impromptu grooming session is over, you quietly roll down the window and look ahead with perfectly straight face. Uncle will tie up the lungi double fast and walk while the face-color will resemble that of beetroot. or small children with broken tooth, running noses who will press onto the glass or run after the car. Or women who will push themselves in through the window and ask which gram you are from.

The village panchayat secretary who said he will do my work only if I come the next day but since I have a car with me, I may as well drop him home.

We are slowly accepting that we have for all practical purposes we have attained gol-matol behenji status. This is what happens when you pump nothing but junk into your system on weekends. Indijoes-cornerhouse-carmelpopcorn at Inox and you develop natural cushions which can make any seat a Gold class comfort.

We went into a Guess showroom populated with skinny-pianted-on-jeans and oversized-tee type of girls. The innards burnt with envy I tell you. So when no one was looking we quickly slipped with a slink fit into the dressing room. The effect of that trial was as good as this.

I havent gone home for 5 months now. Discounting a week long stay make that 7. Spent Onam eating masal dosa at a non descript highway hotel. Sob!

One Cafe Coffe Day every 10 kms on Bangalore-Mysore highway. And Baskin Robbins and McD. at Mandya? Why?

Villages visited so far : Chickbelapur, gauribidanaur, chickmaralli, hanakere, hathahalli, bannur, thornalli, jodipura, shivarpatna, barnalli, malyagodan koplu. Tomorrow Tumkur.

Saw couple of good movies. Rock on rocked. Despite the filmi masala. Despite Farhan Akhtar's voice. It reminds of when life was about living your dreams and not student loan, car loan and house loan. The songs where nonsensically catchy-like rock songs are. I couldnt really decide whether to salivate more for Farhan, Arjun Rampal or Farhan's home. Wasnt the home gorgeous?

And Farhan played i-banker in it. Just before Merril got lynched and Lehman got broken. Hmmm. All B-schools are worried about the placement scenario. Summers-Lehmann-PPO-New York-fat paycheck route seems temporarily closed. But one B-School must be getting sound nights sleep. Finally we alums can see and appreciate the foresight in being bombarded with FMCG companies and other "safe" sectors on Day 0 at alma mater.

Reading "IIM to Ganjdundwara" by Rohithari Rajan. Another one set on the BLT program. Liked "Earning the laundry stripes" by Manpreet Sodhi just a tad more. Maybe because it was the adventure of the first woman in big FMCG Co's all boys sales club.

I av bought close to 14 books this year- 4 of which are currently lying bedside waiting to be read. including "The namesake", "Everyone worth knowing", The Zoya factor" and "Watch me Disappear". All originals. I gave up buying pirated copies. The authors deserve it dont they? I am still open to downloading illegal music though. Madonna has enough money. hmph!

Have run out of steam. Breather. Then next post!

"Zu Beginn also,

und dennoch entzieht es sich mir zum Teil;

Siddhis are a hot topic for some spiritual seekers. They were for me for a long time. In this post, we read the words of Zui on this subject:

The ultimate aim of Guru Siyag's Siddha Yoga, as mentioned on his website
www.the-comforter.org, is the spiritual upliftment of mankind. With
this lofty goal in sight, Guru Siyag speaks of the enlightenment and
complete evolution of the final three stages of consciousness (also known as
"Kosha" in sanskrit): Anand (Bliss), Chit (Becoming) and Sat (Being).

The Siddhis that you mention lie below these three levels. Though many of
Guru Siyag's disciples, including me, acquire Siddhis, we DO NOT become
attached to them. This means that we do not try to hold on to them and make
an exhibition of these powers. Guru Siyag warns us that doing so would
hinder our progress. By becoming attached to a Siddhi, we would limit
ourselves only to that particular state of consciousness and not evolve
further.

He suggests that these are just mere reminders of the immense and eternal
energy and light that we are. On the path of realization we discover many
precious stones. But if we get attached to only one stone we will never be
able to discover the vast treasure that lies ahead.

On his part, Guru Siyag too, does not exhibit his Siddhis.

So to answer your question: Yes, I do have Siddhis. I have been practicing
Guru Siyag's Siddha Yoga (which awakens the Kundalini) for the past 8
years.

Here, I would like to add that though I have Siddhis, I NEVER make use of
them. Certain Siddhis manifest themselves involuntarily by the Supreme
Shakti's command. I, as an individual, do not have a play in it.

My perspective

I have no siddhis as of yet. But I sure am ready to run my mouth on the subject:

I think Guru Siyag hints at his power. If you look at his 15-year record
of healing incurable diseases, it is a sign of tremendous power. From
what I understand, you could goto India and meet some students who
demonstrate some common siddhis. However, all attempts to record
levitation have resulted in the camera failing.

I have asked many groups about Siddhis in my spiritual search. Some dont
have them and try to downplay it. These are the weak groups who are not
tapped into unlimited power. Others are tapped in but mis-use them. Others (like our system) have them but have goals beyond the limited life span of this body.

I think Siddhis are wonderful way to show that you are truly on a
powerful path and I am glad that my colleagues in this system have them.
But at the same time, I think the mission of this group is a great and
useful one.

And dont forget the last thing Zui said: this path is one of
surrender, not will. We are turning this body over to higher powers for
it to use as it sees fit.

My meditation has a few phases. The first phase consists of a hunger. A worry. A desperation that I will sit here for 15 minutes and experience nothing.

Then it hits... something completely beyond words shows up. And the first thing that kicks in is my doubting mind: "oh you havent practiced long enough. you paid all that money before and nothing this good ever happened. that cant be real - you're just making it up"

Now over time, these phases will pass. I have given over my development to the Shakti and gradually she is laying her path to the end of the rainbow.

So dont worry. Just keep practicing. And fasten your seatbelt!

I'm quite torn as to what videos to expose to the masses. I have three videos that I'm debating on, and I know I usually give you two, but since it's a vacation, I think I just might give you three to tide you over.

I know some people have Guitar Hero. In my household, we have not one, but TWO guitars. And of course, Jeremy being the techy geek he is, just had to get the wireless one.

There are a lot of songs that I would have never heard if I hadn't been rocking out to Guitar Hero, and thought to myself, "Self? That's not a bad song."

So I give you Thin Lizzy.

This guy looks like the generic version of Lenny Kravitz and the fashion sense of Hendrix if Hendrix had been worried about glitter and nipples.

Kansas! The time way back in the day before I was even thought of was filled with bands named after geographical places like Kansas, Chicago, Boston. And for some reason, to me, they all sound the same.

AND NOW! For the video completely in left field that has nothing to do with anything that will remotely come up in your extended weekend.....

BOLLYWOOD!

Now. I stumbled upon this video this morning and I laughed my butt off. Everyone complains about the campy-ness of High School Musical and all those Disney-produced movies, but this is what Bollywood is all about. The song is called 'Ishq Kameena' from the movie "Shakti"

Apparently, in Bollywood, each movie must have a song and dance number, and usually each movie has more than one. The concept is all the same. Guy wants girl. Girl wants guy, but plays hard to get so she doesn't seem like a tramp.

What gets me is that all the facial expressions and the movement is exaggerated. Some people will think it's exaggerated to the point where it's ridiculous, but this is how their government wants Bollywood movies.

And I'll admit, Aishwarya Rai is hot.

Valitettavasti en itse sattunut olemaan paikalla, mutta kiitos Radio YLE Ykkösen, sain kuulla suorana lähetyksenä Helsingin Juhlaviikkoihin kuuluvan Huvila-teltassa järjestetyn konsertin, jossa sai kantaesityksensä Eero Hämeenniemen uusi teos "Sade ja punainen maa". Säästääkseni itseäni turhalta selittelemiseltä, tässä suoraan kopioitu laina YLEn nettisivuilta:

Torstaina 28.8.2008 klo 19.03-21.40

Torstai-illan suorassa konserttiradioinnissa kuullaan uutta musiikkia Eero Hämeenniemeltä. Huvila-teltan konsertti tarjoaa vahvoja elämyksiä eteläintialaisen klassisen eli karnaattisen musiikin sekä eurooppalaisen ja intialaisen taidemusiikin kohtaamisten parissa.

Ennakkoluuloton suomalainen uuden musiikin kärkiorkesteri kohtaa eteläintialaisen karnaattisen musiikin merkittävimpiä taiteilijoita. Suorassa lähetyksessä Huvila-teltasta kuullaan kantaesityksenä Eero Hämeenniemen uusi teos Sade ja punainen maa. Laulusolistina esiintyy eteläintialaisen karnaattisen musiikin tämän hetken tärkein edustaja Bombay Jayashri Ramnath. Orkesterina on John Storgårdsin johtama Avanti! vahvistettuna intialaisilla lyömäsoittajilla. Sävellyksen perustana on viisi ikivanhaa tamilinkielistä rakkausrunoa. Konsertin alkupuolella Jayashri soittajineen esittää eteläintialaista karnaattista musiikkia.

Bombay Jayashri, laulu
Pungulam Subramaniam, mridangam-rumpu
Dr. S. Karthick, ghatam-saviruukku
Minna Pensola, viulu
Heikki Nikula, bassoklarinetti
Avanti!

She is Durga; Dasabhuja, the ten armed; Singhavahini, riding a lion; Mahishasurmardini, the slayer of Mahisha; Jagadhatri, mother of the world; Kali, the black one; Muktakesi, with open hair; Tara, the benevolent one; Chinnamasta, the one with a cut head; and Jagadgauri the Gauri of the world. The Dasa Mahavidyas are worshipped in the unorthodox Yogic cult of Tantra and sometimes include other aspects called Shodashi, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Dhumavati, Bagala, Matangi, and Kamala.

Among the ten it is Chandika-Kali who has acquired a rounded persona that often leads to the Worship of a deity and with it Durga has gathered her own myths. The most important being her long battle against the asura brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha. As found in the Chandi Mahatmaya, it is one of the most rousing tales of a battle with dramatic scenes of conflict, strategy and triumph of Righteousness.

CEAP, a new dimension to Shakti has enthusiastically embarked on the journey to create awareness about the significance of computers, to the girls of Govt. Schools in Sonipat. In total, 25 schools have been identified in Sonipat region where we aim to conduct this computer education awareness sessions, and till now, 9 schools have been covered under CEAP which means around 1500 girls have got their first exposure to the utility of computer including internet and knowledge about its basic functions.

The goal of this programme is to open a well equipped computer institute whereby the short term computer courses can be provided to the girls absolutely at no charge. We further envisage liaising with various organizations in order to offer employment opportunities to these girls.

How will this help?

* The short term computer courses will open more job opportunities for these girls.
* These courses are instrumental in creating interest among them to pursue bright career like engineering etc.
* The basic knowledge of how to operate computer is essential in order to keep pace with the modern world. Hence, these short term courses will fortify their confidence and boost them to excel further.

The Guru’s love for her shishyas and even the world at large is boundless. In this scenario, Gurumaa saw the plight of girls in India where they were being killed in the womb and even if they saw the light of day, they were being treated as second-rate citizens in the sphere of education and equality. From the depths of her heart full of compassion for all beings, Gurumaa decided to uplift and empower the girl child. To give effect to a program solely for the development of the Girl Child, the Shakti initiative was commenced.
Mission Shakti provides financial support to the Girl Child for her education. The Girl Child eligible for the grant under this program should be the daughter of a widow, handicapped parents or a war martyr. The grant would be payable for the Girl Child’s education upto the 12th standard. The program has moved ahead to offer computer education to the hitherto neglected girl child. A Computer Awareness Education Program has been launched for the girls of theGovernment
School at Sonepat, which is one of the worst affected areas in terms of declining sex ratio.

Till date, more than 125 girls in
India are the beneficiaries of the Shakti Program. The initiative is also supporting girls who wish to pursue higher courses such as Nursing and Pharmacy. Special meditation camps are organized for the youth where Gurumaa introduces them to spirituality and they are also taught how to defend themselves by experts in the field. Gurumaa has also adopted 40 orphan girls in Mumbai. Plans are afoot to make a documentary on the Shakti Project to increase awareness about it. A Computer Learning Centre for Girls is also on the anvil. All these measures require a large amount of funds, which is being made possible from the sincere efforts of the global Rishi Chaitanya family. Contributions to this noble cause are accepted online through www.gurumaa.com as well as through DD/cheques payable to Shakti Vidya Nidhi Kosh.

WHAT I KNOW FROM THE THIRD EYE

Here I want to note my experience of the several occasions when I have experienced movement in the chakras. I might add, or some would have me add, “or thought I did,” as it is an open question whether what I experienced was really chakras per se, or perhaps something else. It is questionable, too, though not from my standpoint, whether I even experienced anything at all. Perhaps I was just wishing it to be true. That is a distinct possibility, but one I reject because I have no reason to doubt that I did in fact experience something during the instances I will now relate.

During the first six months of my encounter with yoga, I had a number of experiences of energy movement, more than I can recount here. Ironically, at the time, they seemed too few and far between, but that was perhaps because my expectations were so high. I was waiting on celestial visions and voyages, and all I got were some rather mundane, yet nonetheless powerful and powerfully real sensations of energy. Interestingly, when I received shaktipat, a Sanskrit term that means direct energy transference from a realized master, I felt nothing. I joked afterwards that “my experience was that I didn’t have an experience.” I heard other people in the room experiencing kriyas -- laughing, moving around, talking, etc. – and I felt deprived. I wondered whether the teacher had missed me. But no, the teacher had brushed everyone in the room with that peacock feather. What I subsequently learned is that sometimes the energy works very subtly, almost imperceptibly. If one experiences a “gross” manifestation of the energy, it suggests that the individual is at that level, though not necessarily.

I began to have more experiences later when I recited the mantras and did the meditation that it was suggested we do. Sometimes I would feel it most when I lay in shavasana, the corpse pose. At least two times it was almost like a very pleasurable paralysis, something that the lotus eater in me would have loved to have lingered on and indulged in longer than I did. I also felt some things opening up once I began to perform the yoga asanas (postures). It was quite an enlivening feeling, with the exhilarating sensation of what I experienced as warm bursts of liquid energy in various parts of the body, particularly the back and head. If I didn’t already have motivation to continue on with yoga, and I did big time, this was even more incentive to persevere. But like I said, I didn’t need to be prodded, it was so enjoyable, so I went full out. Yoga was everything to me at that time. I essentially gave up on everything else. It was a beautiful, magical time in my life, second only to the months of bliss I experienced when I was 19 and “in love” with what I now believe was the projection of my own inner anima, or Shakti. There’s a book out now called One Day My Soul Just Opened Up, and essentially that was my experience of love creeping up on me, only it was sort of more Whitmanesque, with a sensation of energy moving up to my heart as I lay in bed. Could that have been the awakening of my heart chakra? Possibly, I don’t know. But the effect was that my heart definitely was sky-wide open after that. I was lovin’ life, essentially.

I would definitely feel the energy more during and after retreats with the various Hindu teachers (most of them female) I went to see. A number of times I felt energy pulsating in the third eye area. It was definitely a spinning sensation, as if there was a propeller spinning there. I attribute such movements not only to the energy that was transmitted by the teachers during these retreats, but also to my own stepped-up practice during those times. If it was a weekend retreat, sometimes I would fast part or all of the weekend, and would not miss any of the scheduled practices. Nonetheless, I do not think I would have had such an experience were it not for the great outpouring of Shakti (divine energy) by these women masters.

In conclusion, I can’t deny what I felt, and yet I also cannot prove it to anyone, I realize. If you want to know for yourself, you have to do some kind of practice and have a good teacher or teachers. “If you want the experience, you have to do the experiment.” Happy spinning.

We have indeed come a long way but unfortunately towards creating an imbalance in our society. According to the report of United Nation Population Fund, Key findings include:

A national decline from 945 to 927 in the number of girls per 1,000 boys aged 0-6 between 1991 and 2001.

1981-91 census shows 1.37 crore more boys than girls.
2001 census shows there are 42 crore children, with boys outnumbering girls by 1.98 crores.

A grave situation in states like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat where the ratio has drastically declined to fewer than 800 girls for every 1,000 boys.

A low child sex ratio in certain districts, including the South West District of Delhi, which are "amongst the most prosperous in the country".

Experts predict that if the trend continues, and reaches the dangerous levels of Haryana or Punjab, the Indian society will have to grapple with severe problems including spiraling crime, trafficking of women and related social problems.

Killing of girls by putting a sand bag on their face or by throttling her within hours of being born is not a rare phenomenon. Besides, the practice of pre-birth-elimination of female foetuses is one of the major factors responsible for this decline. And the cause of more women resorting to this practice is because of their preference for sons. In Indian context sons are preferred as they are considered a source of support during old age and for performing religious rites at the time of cremation and subsequently. Preference for sons shall not disappear until girls are empowered as much as boys.

Empowering the girl child through education is an indispensable tool to curb the growing menace of gender inequality, declining sex ratio, and discriminatory treatment given to women in India. Empowered woman is strong enough to stand as a support for her family and community at large. She further contributes to the prospects of next generation.

(Editor's note: Last column of the semester. Not a whole lot to say here, except that I wish I'd pushed harder for Avol's Bookstore. It's easily the best store on State Street and I've found some excellent books there, particularly the gem "Novel with Cocaine." A further write-up of the store is coming for the future, as are my second half of columns [which I admittedly have a preference for].)

Search Madison's bookstores to find perfect literary gifts

Originally published in The Daily Cardinal, December 14, 2005

As those wonderfully dedicated and frostbitten Salvation Army representatives remind us every day, Christmas is the season of giving. With two weeks before the big day, I’m rushing to fill the stockings of my friends and family with books.

While I won’t try to give tips on what books should be gifts - it's too personal of a gift to make individual recommendations - after two and a half years of college, I’ve entered almost every bookstore around town and know where the best are. So in the spirit of giving (and in hopes of getting a book in return) here are some tips for finding the best book for the holiday season.

For the student who is too deep in finals for a serious shopping trip, the best place to go is the University Bookstore. I’ve said this before, but its collection of used books is perfect for a one-stop shopping trip - you can get some Philip K. Dick for the sci-fi fan, Jack Kerouac for the hipster and Michael Moore for the family’s angry liberal. Shopping there is also convenient, as you can sell back your textbooks for more holiday money.

But if you’d like to spend more time picking out a gift, try one of Madison’s older, independent bookstores such as Paul’s Books, 607 State St., or Shakespeare’s Books, 18 N. Carroll St. With tight hallways and overstocked shelves to the ceiling, these stores are made for browsing. Additionally, the battered covers and yellowed pages of a used book make an impact and are far more unique than a paperback from the grocery store.

There are also plenty of specialty stores to pick up books around campus. Shakti, 320 State St., has an interesting selection of New Age theories and books on witchcraft, A Room of One’s Own, 307 W. Johnson St., provides feminist and lesbian literature and Rainbow Bookstore, 426 W. Gilman St., offers titles on liberal and activist beliefs.

If you really want to make an impact on someone significant - or can’t find the time to leave the apartment - I recommend making the ultimate sacrifice and giving them something from your personal library. It suggests you care enough to entrust them with something dear to you, and since you’ve read it yourself you know exactly what they’ll appreciate about it.

Two notes on that tactic though: do not use it as an excuse to clean bad books off your shelf. When you give them a personal book they’ll ask what you liked about it, and any hesitation will be noticed and remembered when they realize the book sucks.

Also, do not give away books you yourself got as gifts. The odds are good that someone will remember you getting it earlier. If you’re like me, the odds are even better you’ll wind up giving it to the person who gave it to you in the first place, and that makes Christmas dinner very awkward.

I hope these tips help you get just the right literary gift and I hope you all enjoy a restful holiday season. Me, I’ve got 20 pounds of books that have been ignored in favor of that studying thing, and it’s time to catch up.

L’area geografica analizzata riguarda Africa, America e l’Europa. In Asia, in area mesopotamica (V millennio AC) e in area anatolica (II millennio AC), viene adorata come Ninhursag, Cibele, e Anahita, in Cina è chiamata Quan-Yin, in India Durga.

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="128" caption="Turchia 6000 a.C."][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_311" align="alignleft" width="124" caption="1600 a.C."][/caption]

Quan-In

Conosciuta In cinese Quan-In o Guan Yin, in giapponese Kannon o Kanzeon, in coreano Gwan-eum o Gwan-se-eum, in tibet come Avalokitesvara.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="496" caption="Quan Yin"][/caption]

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="540" caption="Minerva"][/caption]

Astarte

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="106" caption="Brigid"][/caption]
