Unreleased Cutz: Weezer's "Songs From The Blackhole"

Unreleased Cutz is a new and, if the entry on Wikipedia is anything to go by, short-running series of posts on akuhei bakery relating to unreleased or "lost" albums, from artists I like. And, for the most part, have had a least some of their tracks leaked, so I have something to post other than the oftentimes bizzare stories behind them. Huzzah!

It was December 1994. Californian pop-rockers Weezer had just released their debut, eponymous album (the first of many), and were riding high on the chart success of singles "Buddy Holly" and "Undone - The Sewater Songs" (with awesome videos by Spike Jonze). And how did they decide to follow it up? With a 15-17 track space-themed rock-opera, that's how.

Singer/songwriter/lead guitarist Rivers Cuomo wrote and recorded the majority of Songs From The Black Hole, an album-long story about "three guys and two girls and a mechanoid - that are on this mission in space to rescue somebody, or something. The whole thing was really an analog for taking off, going out on the road and up the charts with a rock band, which is what was happening to me at the time I was writing this and feeling like I was lost in space."

The characters themselves were all due to be played by various different people (although on Cuomo's demos, all the parts were played by himself, which makes the leaked songs slightly hard to understand - scroll down for more on that).

The "three guys" were Jonas (voiced by Rivers), Wuan and Dondó (voiced by Brian Bell and Matt Sharp of Weezer), the two girls were Laurel (voiced by Rachel Haden of that dog.) and Maria (voiced by Joan Wasser, then of the Dambuilders, now of Joan As Police Woman) with the robot, "M1", was due to be voiced by Karl Koch, a friend of the band and roadie at the time.

While writing the album, and simultaneously studying at Harvard (in a rock band and studying at an Ivy League school? That's just showing off), Cuomo went off the whole cosmic-opera idea, and became more enthralled with Edwardian-era-opera Madama Butterfly, discarded the Songs From The Blackhole idea and went off to make Pinkerton.

Pinkerton, which was recieved with a wave of critical yawning upon release, featured four songs which were written before SFTBH, but had been changed to fit the theme of the album - "Tired of Sex", "Getchoo", "No Other One", and "Why Bother?", which were "unshaped" for Pinkerton. "Devotion", "Waiting on You", and "I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams" surfaced as b-sides to the Pinkerton singles "El Scorcho" and "The Good Life".

Several tracks from the as-yet still unreleased album surfaced in 2002, and are available to download from the album's unofficial site. A further five tracks appeared on the compilation album Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo last year, the sleevenotes of which explained some of the plot points of the musical.

This is probably the oddest of the albums I'm going to tackle in this series; my main criticism of Cuomo's songwriting, and Weezer as a whole, over the years is his/their inability to grow up, and tackle more grown-up/different themes in his/their songs.

With Songs From The Blackhole, it seems Cuomo actually was trying something new - and this was only the second Weezer album! Pinkerton, while not as such a radical departure, was in fairness a bit of a change from The Blue Album; however, since then Weezer albums seemed to have just straddled the line between their first two albums, managing to sound the same both musically and lyrically for over ten years.

While the group's third(!) self-titled album sounds like another not-as-such-a-radical-departure, but a bit of a change (for the good) nonetheless, perhaps now is the right time for Songs From The Blackhole to be released, and breathe some life into the flagging musical career of the once-proud group.

Choice Cutz (for you to download)

"Longtime Sunshine" - a lazy, sweet ballad, "about the singer's dissatisfaction with life, wanting to return to times when things were more simple for them". With sad, kazoo-sounding synths in the background. It's better than it sounds.

"Blast Off" - more rockier, and far less subtle. Apparently, in the story of SFTBH it'sabout The lyrics are a conversation between the main character "Jonas telling his shipmates Wuan and Dondó how excited yet reserved about the prospect of doing what he thinks is his dream job. he is Wuan and Dondó are much more upbeat about the experience. In the middle of the song M1 (the robot) interjects to remind them of the task at hand. In the last verse we find that a female character, Maria, the ship's cook, has entered the scene and that Jonas has a history with her from back at Star Corps Academy".

Taken as a standard Weezer song, however, the idea of being "excited yet reserved" about "rocketing" to "space" is a fairly obvious metaphor for the rock 'n' roll fame Cuomo was being hurled in to, along with all the positive and negative aspects that go along with that.

Even though there was nothing interesting to watch, my television was already on at around 5PM. I was just surfing through different channels, which weren't that many considering we're on free TV only. The agony, it seemed like the longest hour I had to wait for a show. Tonight on American Idol, the Top 3 sings three songs each: the judges' choice, the contestant's choice, and the producers' choice.

First round (The Judges' Choice)
David A: And So It Goes by Billy Joel (Paula Abdul)
Syesha: If I Ain't Got You by Alicia Keys (Randy Jackson)
David C: First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack (Simon Cowell)

It was sort of a different Cook on this song because of the lack of "rock" which Randy didn't like but Simon (and I) found brilliant. Syesha did great but it was only a few notes different from the Alicia Keys version. Archuleta was also very good. No surprise, as Simon said.

Second round (Personal Choice)
David A: With You by Chris Brown
Syesha: Fever by Peggy Lee
David C: I Dare You to Move by Switchfoot

David Archuleta's choice was very unexpected, really. Yes, he had sang a line of Sean Kingston's Beautiful Girls when he sang Stand By Me last week (which resulted to his dad's backstage ban) but... but... But OK, he pulled it through. Except for that awkward "dancing" and booty-shaking which were definitely off-beat. The other David gave what people wanted from him. I liked Paula's comment about it, saying it was just beginning when he hit the end of the song. I love Syesha's Fever even if the judges didn't. Maybe she could have raised the high notes higher though.

Third round (Producer's Choice)
David A: Longer by Dan Fogelberg
Syesha: Hit Me Up by Gia Farrell
David C: I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing by Aerosmith

Hmm. OK. Were the producers sending a subtle message to all viewers? Or were they conditioning their minds/hearts for the results? They gave David Archuleta a beautiful romantic ballad and David Cook a legendary rock song. On the other hand, they gave Syesha Mercado a pop song which is included in the Happy Feet soundtrack. Answer me people, was that deliberate on the producers' part? Paula said the song wasn't able to show who she was an artist. Well, it wasn't her fault, RIGHT? Bye-bye last woman standing! (Did I just show that I wanted her to be eliminated anyway?) David A's Longer is what English scholars had in mind when they created the idiom music to my ears. Yes it was predictable but it was still awwwesome. Now David Cook with I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing, did he just win American Idol right there? Seriously, songs like this should be reserved for Finals night. He wasn't in the zone. HE IS THE ZONE. Hands down to David C.

Eighteen hours until elimination night. I can't wait. I'm predicting the elimination of Syesha but she is full of surprises so we just might end up with her and Cook (no second thoughts) for the Finals.

P.S. Did I hear that right? Paula's giving negative comments already?

What I felt from this was that I had let go of my previous study technique and is sucking big time. I realise the potential and the path and was going with that study method and kind of lost it somewhere down the road, and after letting it go, the new study method just sucked. It brought me into a wall, a red huge brick wall. Well, it really wasn't me this time letting you go, its Jeramy, the guy who wrote this entry and the previous one.

British crooner Jamie Lidell rings in the weekend by posting his brand-new tracks from his new album "Jim" on MySpace. The song is called "Little Bit Feel Good" and if this sun-splashed soul-pop stomper is a good indication of the rest of this new Lidell LP then we're in for a treat.

Recorded in Berlin, Los Angeles and Paris, Lidell once again hooks up with producers Mocky and Gonzales to polish his raw ideas and turn them into a collection of catchy, hit-worthy songs. A press release describes "Jim" as an album that "will switch you on in the morning, move you on the dance-floor and take you down in the small hours. It's a bold, promiscuously diverse album, mixing up gospel grooves, sweetly sung and fiercely passionate soul, delicately moving ballads, thumping early R & B, synthed-up disco, and even a touch of "hillbilly funk.'" Sounds like a winner to me.

Lidell adds in the statement, "The most important thing was the vocal, to capture the balance of me delivering the songs with full gusto, and at the same time retaining the grain and the grit."

This version, which I'm assuming was recorded for a radio session, a year before the album, features surf-style twangy guitar and strumming acoustic guitars, rather than the enormous organ and sense of dread in the final recorded version. I kinda prefer this version =/

When I feel as if I've got to make a change, but I'm not sure which path to take (which option/choice is the right one), I can call out to Him in my desperation...and He will answer. When I'm finally ready to let go of my limited thinking, my fears, my negative outlook, my reasoning, and my way, and I'm at a point at which I'm actually ready to stop "talking" and start "listening," He slowly starts to reveal the way to me.

I start to see bit by bit the course to take, and I'm able to stay on the path as long as I keep my eyes on Him and trust Him to take care of all the details that I cannot control. I've been seeking God's guidance for quite some time now about an issue, and more recently I've finally surrendered it fully to Him, trusting in Him for the outcome. There's a song I've heard several times the last couple of weeks that has really "spoken" to me and encouraged me. This song reminds me of the following scriptures:

Season Analysis, Summer Improvements Needed, 2008/09 Predictions

So it was a season of two halves for the Arsenal this term. From August to early January we dominated practically every game, played brilliant football, and lost only twice in all four competitions, all of which we were still involved in at that point. The highlight of these four months was the 7-0 victory versus Sparta Prague where we played better than Brazil in the '70's and Walcott got his first Champions League goals.

Then three events saw the beginning of Arsenal's downfall.

Tuesday, January 22, Arsenal's 5-1 loss to Spurs
Saturday, February 16, Arsenal's 4-0 loss to Manchester United
Saturday, February 23, Eduardo breaks his leg against Birmingham

Starting with our dismantling at Spurs, between then and our last fixture of March, the win at Bolton, we have nose dived in terms of results. We drew 6 times in all competitions, against AC Milan, Birmingham, Aston Villa, Wigan, 'Boro, Liverpool, and Liverpool. And we lost against Chelsea. Then the final blows were dealt.

So three depressing events let to our season ending. Two were avoidable, one wasn't, and if one hadn't happened, we could have been winning the title, not Man Utd. Also, we exited from both competitions because of questionable penalties.

Basically we need to look at the time when we fell apart, February to April, Birmingham to Man Utd, and ask our self what happened. Well here are all the results

Birmingham: 2:2 Game of Eduardo's injury. McFadden 29, 95, Walcott 50, 55

Aston Villa: 1:1 Senderos og 28, Bendtner 94

AC Milan: 2:0 First English Team to win in San Siro. Fabregas 85, Adebayor 92

Wigan: 0:0

Boro: 1:1 Aliadiere 25, Toure 86

Chelsea: 1:2 Sagna 58, Dorgba, 72, 82

Bolton: Taylor 14, 44, Gallas 63, van Persie 69, Fabregas 90

Liverpool (UEFACL): 1:1, Adebayor 24, Kuyt 26

Liverpool (EPL): 1:1 Crouch 42, Bendtner 54

Liverpool (UEFACL): 2:4 Diaby 13, Adebayor, 84; Hyypia, 30, Torres 69, Gerrard, 85, Babel 90

Manchester United: 1:2 Adebayor 48, Ronaldo 53, Hargreaves 73

Now, one of two things happened in everyone of these games. 1. We went in front and ended up drawing or losing. 2. We went behind and then could only get a draw.

So, moving onto the the topic of this summer, what could we do to make sure that doesn't happen again? Well, to find that out, we have to ask ourselves a few questions. What do you need to keep a lead, or come from behind to take the lead?

For Question #1, you need a solid defense. Clichy-Toure-Gallas-Sagna has one weak link. William Gallas. He is not a leader, nor a true Arsenal style player, nor a good partner to future legend Kolo Toure. We need a huge, dominating, no nonsense, inspiring centerback, a new Sol Campbell. That could be anybody, but I expect Wenger to sign a center back, even if it is just as a replacement for Senderos. Next, you would need a Defensive Midfielder, experienced and inspirational, to break up opponent's moves, and start counter attacks. This player will be first on Wenger's list for this summer.

For Questions #2, you need goals from midfield, and reliable goal scorers up front. Up front we have three reliable scorers in my opinion in Bendtner, van Persie, and Adebayor, and Eduardo, is he makes a full, healthy return. However, more importantly than reliable strikers, is goals from midfield. Three of four midfielders should be giving regular goals. Rosicky (when fit) and Fabregas are the only ones that can do that right now. However, I have faith in the emerging Walcott to become a regular goal scorer on the right wing. Hleb and Eboue cannot offer us regular goals. I'm just hoping Rosicky's surgery works.

So my dream team for next year is this:

If van Persie's injuries continue I think Eduardo should take his first team spot for 2009/10, and Bendtner will come in on the the bench. If Rosicky's injuries continue, he will be replaced my Carlos Vela, if he is a success in England.

I think that this squad has the perfect blend of youth and experience, and has a good enough second team. This team will challenge for the title next year, to the very end, and i predict AT LEAST second place in the League, and probably another trophy else.

Praying for China and the Earthquake

You know what gets me the most? It is the unsettling indifference that we as Americans have for the pain and suffering experienced abroad. I know that when 9/11 occurred the nation was "devastated" and when the flooding happened in New Orleans we were all "shocked", but where is the strong emotive words for those people outside our borders? I am not bitter towards America, but saddened by the narrow concern we have when tragedy happens abroad. I could liken it to reading the obituaries in the newspapers. We scan them only to see if someone we know has passed on, but have no careful consideration of those we do not know. Why must the death of another effect us personally before we are willing to pray for those who are in tragic situations?

As a Christian, how must God break our hearts before we show compassion? I feel that the Church at large has God like Moses striking his walking stick upon the rock to bring forth water. Would it be right to pen a diatribe against the church when I am fully aware of my own weaknesses in this area? No, I admit that I have failed to reach out with compassion and been willing to build the wall of indifference a little higher. I confess it is hard to stop by the wayside and help when the person is a stranger. What does this say though about me? I see now that I need even more to be on my knees in prayer crying out for grace to show compassion, grace to sustain me and grace to carry me through. If the Holy Spirit does not second my prayers, I am sure that my weaknesses will overcome me. I am appalled with myself. On my own I can do nothing, but God has given us Christ and Christ has given us His Holy Spirit and the Spirit will work His perfect work. Even so, as pain and suffering finds China on her knees and I find myself on mine, may God reveal himself again as the Sovereign and Comforter, and may he shower us with grace from his right hand. Amen.

Pray for China as they try to find their lost among the ruins of their cities and as they mourn the loss of those who have been taken by the earthquake.

I wanted to share a song that I wrote about a little girl that crossed paths with me not too long ago. I was on the train taking a ride to work and i noticed a drunken man, so out of it that he could hardly stand up on his own two feet. Next to him, holding his hand stood a little angel, his daughter which probably would have been around 5 years of age. I wont say more, the song will express what i went through that day. All I hope is for that little girl to be safe and in good hands now.

Thankfully, we spent the bulk of the rainy day walking in sheltered shopping malls like 新光三越 <Shin Kong Mitsukoshi> and 威秀影城 <Vieshow Cinemas>. The downside was that most of the stores catered almost exclusively to females, which kind of made the trip to a book store in one of the buildings, one of the more interesting highlights of touring that particular shopping district located around 市政府車站 <Taipei City Hall Station>. But of course the main motive for our visit for the day was to scale the heights of the current tallest building in the world, 台北101 <Taipei 101>.

As luck would have it, the Outdoor Observatory on 91F was open within ten minutes of our arrival at the Indoor Observatory as the weather had cleared up significantly. I cannot describe to you the feeling of standing at that altitude, between the skies and the land below. It is something one has to experience it on his or her own.

And what's a tourist attraction without mascots? Presenting the Damper Babies, figurines derived from the wind damping technology within the skyscraper.

Following which, we made a quick trip to the nearby 24-hour 誠品書店 <Eslite Bookstore> before heading down to 五分埔 <Wufenpu> and 饒河街觀光夜市 <Raohe St. Night Market>. Wufenpu sold clothes mainly targeted at the female population, leaving some of us guys very bored and tired while the ladies shopped. I still managed to get a pair of bermudas with the help of Paul though =) The Night Market was a much more uplifting experience in that we got to eat the area's well-known 胡椒餅 <Pepper bun>.

We then finally made our way back to our lodgings via the rail system, taking the train from 松山車站 <Songshan Station>. Note the difference between this and the Metro. Yes, we took the rail and not the Metro. The consequence of us going back late at night, transferring to what was possibly the last Metro train for the day was the chance to see a television crew filming in action in Ximending. Regrettably, the only person I could recognise from the cast was Vic Zhou. Sorry no photos here, so you are going to have to take my word for it. We actually lingered for quite some time to see the set-up before dragging our weary bodies back to the hotel for our last night of the trip...

Can Dustin The Turkey Win The Eurovision Song Contest 2008?

Dustin the Turkey will represent Ireland in this years Eurovision Song Contest in Serbia. With the contest looming, one wonders what chance a puppet has?

When Dustin won Ireland's Eurosong I was delighted. Here we are, having won this prestigious contest more times than any other country in Europe and now we are making a mockery of it.

The reason is simple. For the past few years and especially since jury voting disappeared the contest has become a farcical affair of 'we'll vote for you if you vote for us' between many of the mainland European countries. Last year the same happened only that I agree that the winning song probably was the best.

Given the current system and the voters lack of common sense to realise that this is a 'song' contest we in Ireland realised that we haven't a chance of winning or of even doing well (.......coming last in 2007)

So then comes Dustin, who basically has a song that takes the piss out of the Eurovision and shows it for what it is.

The there's the irony.........Dustin could actually win. This is because apart from voting for your neighbours, voters also like to vote for the most ridiculous song in the contest, which in this case is Dustin's rendition of 'Irlande Douze Points'.
