Feelings are a funny thing. Sometimes I let my feelings take over far too much, and I can't trust them. Then my head gets all messed up. I love music, and lyrics. Songs with beautiful lyrics that mean so much.. we were listening to music last night, Killers, Greenday and Fall Out Boy. All songs with proper lyrics. They say so much.

Fall Out Boy - Hum Hallelujah is an amazing song. I can write it better than you've ever felt it. Reminds me of how when you write something down, it always becomes so much clearer in your head than it is if it's just flying around in all the chaos in your brain. That's part of the reason I like writing songs really, it clears things up in my head.

I'd love to rely on my feelings but I can't really.. I need to rely on what I know to be true. That's why I need to write. I can write it better than you ever felt it.. Brill lyrics. It just feels like when I write everything gets so much clearer, it seems like there's light at the end of the tunnel.

There's so many times in my life that I don't think I could have ever got through without words. Words make so much difference. If someone else has written down exactly how you are feeling, it means there's hope.

The Bible is full of words, words of hope, words that when you read them just let you know that other people have gone through the same thing, that there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Notes

Credit: Firstly, all the credit in the world goes to Betty for bravely pulling this song off.

I could tell it was quite a challenge for her because the range was a bit high, and there were instances where she had to hold a high E...but I felt she pulled it off remarkably. Considering she is an alto, I think she did great!

Key: I definitely wanted the key to be in A Major, cos I believe that A Major sounds "grand" and "anthemic". That's why I was reluctant to alter the key, even if it meant the singer sustaining high Es, haha!

Inspiration: For this year, I decided to write a more "safe" version of an NDP song. I wanted to write something that the NDP Committee would potentially listen to.

Basically, that means being extremely politically-correct.

However, I still wanted the lyrics to be well-written and well-thought out. I looked through various websites such as the Singapore wikipedia page, the Uniquely Singapore website, and the Singapore Infomap portal for lyrical ideas. I also read up on the Singapore pledge, the Singapore flag and other things to gain more ideas...hence the references to the Singapore flag, the Singapore national anthem and other small references in the lyrics.

The basic skeletal tune came to me quite quickly. I was just fooling around at the piano one night and started playing chord progressions in A Major...and suddenly a tune started to surface. I used the "ascending" chord progression (A-Bm-C#m-D) as I felt it was rather anthemic and kinda induces you to wanna rise up and raise your spirits when you hear the song. It has that kind of feel.

Sadly, the lyrics took me a really long time to finish. I just couldn't find enough inspiration to write an entire song full of politically-correct cliches (but I managed to squeeze it out in the end). There were also some melodic lines which gave me HUGE problems, like the 3rd line of the chorus ("Let our one united spirit soar..."). I took the longest time to finally decide on the tune and lyrics for that 3rd line.

Overall: Overall, I'm very pleased with the way the song turned out. I think the reception to the song at Songcraft last night was pretty encouraging too.

Some commented that the key was a bit too high, which made singing along a bit difficult, since an NDP song is supposed to be sung along by everyone. I think that's a very valid point.

I'm looking forward to presenting this song at this year's Songcraft mini-concert!

I stumbled upon this band earlier this week and I have to say I love their music. I had a hard time deciding on which one of their songs I was going to post but I decided on Trashcan. I really like the vibe it emits. Their music has an earthy feel and the ability to make you daydream and go off to that far away place in your mind.

The band is called Delta Spirit. I even like the name, very catchy.

Sorry, I looked for the lyrics but could not find them. I know there is one verse that I love and it states- If you hide your questions there's no answers, I finally found the cure for my own cancer.

I'm in D.C. right now.  My brother is turning 25 next week, but he's having his birthday party this Saturday.  He invited me up to come to the party, plus he wants me to help DJ it.  AND perform.  Geez, can't a brotha get a lil' R&R when he goes out of town!

Not that I'd be resting too much anyway.  I'm staying at the Crown Royal hotel, and have lots of downtime.  Which, of course, means I have time to film my next video... well, actually, TWO videos! 

I finally figured out how to do the song I wanted this week, and do a video for it in a way that's not corny.  All I can say is this: it's a dance song that's very catchy and has absolutely NO message to it.  Just one of those fun songs I came up with during a freestyling session where I wasn't trying to say anything too serious. 

At the same time, though, given how basic the lyrics of the song are, I had a fear that there'd be a backlash if I did the video for it in the wrong way, i.e. something out of my normal character.  However, I received a message this week for a video idea that I had already kind of thought about doing, but figured out how to expand the idea so that it's a two-parter.  The video for this week is part one; the part-two "response" video, of sorts, will be next week.  This way, I have a legitimate reason for this week's song to exist while at the same time having an excuse to make a song with simple lyrics.  Genius!!

But back to the vaca... so, my bro wants me to perform my "Obama Obama" song at the party.  Me, being the planning ahead person I usually am, figured it would be a great idea because I could film the performance and add it to my ever-growing press package.  Between the 9 videos (and counting) I currently have up, along with the two interviews (and counting) I've done, as well as the large amount of radio play I've been getting, I should be able to shop myself around to various record labels.

Then again, there is something to be said about letting them come to me.  I haven't been sending out anything to anybody since I started this site, but now everyone - from interviewers to radio stations to fans, fan letters, etc. - has been coming to me.  I guess the old adage is true: "if you build it, they will come."  Actually, I think I stole that from an old Kevin Cosner movie.  Still holds true, though!

Lastly, my cousin Katia posted a note on my Facebook wall yesterday saying she heard my song at radio station 92.1 in Richmond, VA - my home of 18 years before I moved to Atlanta.  It feels good to hear your stuff on the radio, but it feels even BETTER knowing it's being played in the place you grew up. 

Truly, God is great!

Friday Fill-In #81

1. If I could be a fly on the wall I would see what happens at night after I put my son to bed - what exactly does he do in there, when does he fall asleep and is he sleeping in his bed at all?
