What a week. I never thought the taskers would stop. Finished my last one at about 1615 EST. Last night I watched the movie 300 That Matty gave to me. but need to finish it tonight. About 2200 I couldn't hold my eyes open. Wineymomma even called and my cell volume was on high…didn't even hear it. I was out! Anyway, what I've seen so far, darn good movie. I remember reading an article about how the Iranians got pissed over it. Probably because the Persians take a butt whoopin' at first. The imagery, acting, and violence was awesome. Not to mention one of the hottest "relations" scene I think I've ever seen---Matty and I overwhelmingly agreed!.

Only bad thing about the movie, too dang many homosexual overtones (well, they were Greek; guess they want to keep it historically accurate. Here is a brief history lesson I found:

In the Battle of Thermopylae (as detailed almost entirely by Herodotus), which occurred in 480 BC, an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian Empire at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the Persians for three days in one of history's most famous last stands. A small force led by King Leonidas of Sparta blocked the only road through which the massive army of Xerxes I of Persia could pass. After three days of battle, a local resident named Ephialtes is believed to have betrayed the Greeks by revealing a mountain path that led behind the Greek lines. Dismissing the rest of the army, King Leonidas stayed behind with 300 Spartans, 700 Thespian volunteers, 400 Thebans that had been pressed into service, and 900 Helots.

The Persians succeeded in taking the pass but sustained losses disproportionate to those of the Greeks. The fierce resistance of the Spartan-led army offered Athens the invaluable time to prepare for a decisive naval battle that would come to determine the outcome of the war.^[4] The subsequent Greek victory at the Battle of Salamis left much of the Persian Empire's navy destroyed and Xerxes retreated to Asia, leaving a force in Greece under Mardonius, who was to meet the Greeks in battle one last time. The Spartans assembled at full strength and led a pan-Greek army that defeated the Persians decisively at the Battle of Plataea, ending the Greco-Persian War and with it, the expansion of the Persian Empire into Europe.^[5]

The performance of the defenders at the battle of Thermopylae is often used as an example of the advantages of training, equipment, and good use of terrain as force multipliers,^[6] and has become a symbol of courage against overwhelming odds.^[6]

Anyway, it's a great movie. However, in one scene, Leonidas kicks the Persian emissary into a large pit located within Sparta. Now, this pit seems to be bottomless (a physical impossibility but from the duration of the "whoosh" made by the fall, I have to assume it's true). Can anyone explain to me why there is a bottomless pit in the center of Sparta? Can this be historically accurate?

For those of you who have not seen it, I've included a picture. Notice that size of this pit. What use is a pit of that size? It can't be a well, since we've already established it's bottomless. Perhaps it's an ancient landfill? But really, no barrier at all around this pit? Can I at least get some velvet ropes? Maybe a sign of some sort that alerts the casual passerby? How many Spartan children fell down this pit each year? Wait a minute...

No doubt. But I think it pales in comparison to some of the battles that the Swiss have won. For example:
1315 A.D., The Battle of Morgarten.
1,400 Swiss peasants shower rocks down onto 20,000 Austrian Knights causing them to flee into a lake where many of them drowned.
2,000 Austrians died. 12 Swiss peasants died

1339 A.D., the Battle of Laupen.
12,000 German soldier on horseback fight against just 6,500 Swiss soldiers on foot. The Swiss defeat the Germans on the open battle-field. A first for the Swiss and for all of Europe as the mounted knight was considered superior to the foot soldier.

1386 A.D., the Battle of Sempach (this one is my favorite)
4,000 armoured Austrian knights join in battle against 1,300 Swiss peasants armed with only halberds and pieces of wood tied to their arms as makeshift shields. At the end of the battle, 2000 Austrian knights were dead compared to only 200 Swiss peasants. Legend has it that a man named Arnold Winkelried held on to several enemy lances that had been thrust through his body until his fellow countrymen could fight off the invading Austrians.

Two years later in 1388, the Battle of Nafels.
FIFTEEN THOUSAND (15,000) Austrian Knights were completely decimated when 650 Swiss rolled stones down upon them from the top of a hill and then charged "with such a fury, as to force them to retire with an immense loss." 1,700 Austrians dead. 55 Swiss dead.

Yeah you read that correctly. 15,000 Austrian Knights were routed by 650 Swiss peasants!

The main difference between the Spartans and the Swiss: The Swiss don't lose.

मुझे यह सोच उन लोगों पर हंसी आ रही है कि खामखा अपना समय वे लोग एक बेकार के मुद्दे पर हल्ला कर व्यर्थ कर रहे हैं। फ़िल्में कब से सच्चाई का आईना हो गईं? अधिकतर फ़िल्में मनोरंजन के लिए बनाई जाती हैं और जोधा-अक़बर भी एक कमर्शियल फ़िल्म है जिसका उद्देश्य भी मनोरंजन ही है न कि लोगों का ज्ञानवर्धन करना। तो कुछ हल्ला मचाने वाले लोग यह कह रहे हैं कि जिस तरह जन्नतनशीन फिल्म निर्देशक के.आसिफ़ द्वारा बनाई गई दिलीप कुमार तथा मधुबाला की फ़िल्म मुग़ल-ए-आज़म ने जोधा का अक़बर की बेग़म होने की भ्रांति फैलाई थी उसी प्रकार फ़िल्म जोधा-अक़बर भी उसी भ्रांति को कायम रखे है।

पर बात वही है कि फ़िल्में कब से सच्ची घटनाओं को जस-का-तस देखने का आईना हो गईं? जिन अत्यधिक पढ़े-लिखे महानुभावों को यह पता है कि जोधा वास्तव में अक़बर की बेग़म न होकर जहाँगीर की बीवी थी उन पढ़े-लिखे महानुभावों को यह न दिखा कि फ़िल्म जोधा-अक़बर के आरंभ में कथा बाँचते हुए अमिताभ बच्चन कहते हैं:

इतिहास गवाह है कि इस ज़मीन पर खून की खुराक से ही सल्तनतें पनपती रही हैं। सन्‌ 1011 से कितनों ने ही वक्त-२ इसे लूटकर इस फूल को अपने कदमों तले रौंदा है। और फिर..... सन्‌ 1450 में कदम रखा मुग़लों ने; जिन्होंने इसे अपना घर बनाया, इसे प्यार दिया और इसे नवाज़ा। बादशाह बाबर से शुरु हुई मुग़लिया हुकूमत हुमायूँ से होती हुई अक़बर तक पहुँची जिसे मुग़लिया दौर में सबसे ऊँचा दर्जा हासिल हुआ।

फ़िल्म वालों की तो क्या कहें पर इन पढ़े-लिखे विद्वानों और इतिहासकारों पर अवश्य आश्चर्य हो रहा है कि इन्होंने इस बात पर हल्ला नहीं मचाया कि फ़िल्म में कहा गया है कि मुग़ल सन्‌ 1450 में आए थे। अब यह तो फ़िल्म में सही कहा गया है कि मुग़लिया सल्तनत की नींव बादशाह बाबर ने रखी थी पर यह मुझे समझ नहीं आता कि मुग़ल सन्‌ 1450 में भारत कैसे आ गए थे क्योंकि मुग़ल सल्तनत की नींव बाबर ने सन्‌ 1504 के आसपास रखी थी जब उसने काबुल और खोरासन के पूर्वी भागों और सिंध पर कब्ज़ा किया था। और तो और, उसे छोड़िए, बाबर का जन्म सन्‌ 1483 में हुआ था तो वह कैसे सन्‌ 1450 में भारत आकर मुग़लिया सल्तनत की शुरुआत कर सका यह वाकई चर्चा का विषय है। क्या कोई समय में यात्रा कर सकने वाला उपकरण उस काल में मौजूद था या भविष्य से कोई वहाँ जाएगा यह करने के लिए? ;)

फ़िल्म में यह बात तो सही दिखाई है कि सन्‌ 1555 में बादशाह हुमायूँ की अकस्मात मृत्यु से लफ़ड़ा हो गया था और हेमचन्द्र विक्रमादित्य भार्गव उर्फ़ हेमु ने दिल्ली और आगरा पर अपना कब्ज़ा जमा अपने को सम्राट घोषित कर दिया था और फिर बैरम खाँ की कमान में चलती फौज ने पानीपत की दूसरी लड़ाई में हेमु की अपने से दोगुणी फ़ौज से लोहा लिया था और हेमु आँख में तीर लगने से ज़ख्मी हो गिर पड़ा था जिसका बैरम खाँ ने तब सिर कलम कर दिया था जब अक़बर ने ऐसा करने से मना किया था। यानि कि पूर्णतया झूठ नहीं दिखाया है फ़िल्म में, कुछ-२ जगह पर सही इतिहास फ़िल्माया गया है।

पर बात यह नहीं है कि क्या सही फ़िल्माया है, बात यह है कि इन हल्ला करने वाले विद्वानों को सन्‌ 1450 वाली त्रुटि क्यों न दिखी? जोधा का अक़बर की बीवी न होने का गूढ़ राज़ मालूम है जो कि अभी भी विवादास्पद है क्योंकि इस बारे में कोई ठोस प्रमाण नहीं हैं पर तारीख का नहीं मालूम जिसके बारे में पक्के ठोस प्रमाण हैं और जो दर्ज इतिहास है?

ज़ाती तौर पर मेरा मानना है कि फ़िल्म मनोरंजन के लिए होती हैं, इतनी टेन्शन न ही लो तो बेहतर होता है। तकरीबन दो वर्ष पहले आई हॉलीवुड की फ़िल्म 300 का ही उदाहरण लें जो कि थरमॉपली की प्रसिद्ध लड़ाई पर बनी थी जिसमें कथित 300 स्पॉर्टा के सैनिकों ने हज़ारों-लाखों की पर्शिया की फौज से लोहा लिया था, परन्तु उसमें दिखाया गया कि अंत में सिर्फ़ स्पॉर्टा के ही सैनिक रह गए जो मारे गए परंतु इतिहास तो कुछ और ही कहता है। दर्ज इतिहास के अनुसार उन 300 स्पॉर्टा के सैनिकों के साथ तकरीबन 700 थेस्पिया के सैनिकों ने भी अंत तक ज़र्कसीस की सागर सी विशाल फौज से लोहा लेते हुए अपने प्राणों का बलिदान दिया था। तो इस बारंबार दोहराए जाने वाले गूफ़-अप(Goof Up) को क्या कहेंगे कि जब भी थरमॉपली की प्रसिद्ध लड़ाई का ज़िक्र आता है तो सिर्फ़ उन 300 स्पॉर्टा के सैनिकों तथा उनके राजा लियोनाईडस की वाह वाही होती है जबकि उनके साथ आखिरी साँस तक लड़ते हुए शहीद हुए 700 गुमनाम थेस्पियन सैनिक अपने हिस्से की वाह-वाही से वंचित रह जाते हैं!!

तो बात यह भी नहीं है कि फ़िल्म जोधा-अक़बर में बताई गई गलत तारीख को हल्ला करने वाले इतिहास के विद्वानों ने अनदेखा कर दिया; बात यह है कि फ़िल्म को फ़िल्म की तरह ही लो यानि कि काल्पनिक कहानी के रूप में। यदि यह कहा जाता है कि फ़िल्म सच्ची घटनाओं पर बनी है और फिर उसमें कोई बात गलत दिखाई जाती है तो उसका विरोध लाज़मी है।

और जो हल्ला करने वाले लोग यह कहते हैं कि इस तरह की गलतियों से लोगों को गलत ज्ञान मिलता है तो भई जो व्यक्ति ठोस दर्ज किताबी ज्ञान लेने की जगह फ़िल्म देख यह ज्ञान लेता है कि अक़बर कब बादशाह बना और उसकी बीवी का क्या नाम था तो उस व्यक्ति और उसकी बुद्धि पर तरस ही आ सकता है!! ;)
