Hey guys, quick news: Bible Study, same time (6:30pm), same place (213 Wheeler). We'll be continuing with our series in the book of Genesis.

Afterwards, all the Kairos groups will join forces to put on our first Maxwell Field Night! Not athletic or uncoordinated? No worries! The games we'll play there are fine-tuned so that the more unathletic and uncoordinated you are, the better you'll fair! Haha, just kidding. But the games are designed so that no individuals will exceed and soar above the rest; the games are specifically built for large number of people in teams. In any case, it'll be a great time of fun and fellowship!

Please invite your friends and classmates to both Bible Study and the Maxwell Field Night!

Upcoming: Sunday Service at Gracepoint Fellowship Church starts at 1:30pm at Willard Millde School. We'll be continuing with our "Monday-thru-Saturday" series. In addition, next Sunday we'll be holding a service at a nearby convalescent home. More details to be announced tomorrow!

I strongly recommend the upcoming multi arts event ‘Chrysalis' happening at the Zoo on Thursday 23 October, and not just because it's a 4ZZZ fundraiser!

Created & coordinated by the amazing Heidi Millington from Eco Radio, the musical line up includes Mardi Lumsden and the Rising Seas and Sans Grenadine who'll have you shimmying on the dancefloor; Also performing on the night, the sensuous tones of Dizzygotheca and Silver Sircus will get you rocking back and forth in a rythmical fashion.

There'll also be art and photos by established and emerging artists, exploring how environmental awareness meets artistic expression will be projected to create a virtual art show. And the entire gig will be carbon offset! How's about that for consistency?!

This looks to be a great night, and at only $10 or $8 for subs, it's hard to think of a reason not to go! And just think; With all those like minded, lovely, environmentally aware people together in one spot, you never know what 'cross pollination' you might find...

I don't know, maybe it is the high-stakes election, maybe it is the fact that Judith Malina is still blowing people's minds advocating for the beautiful anarchist revolution and Paradise Now! after all these years (I need to go see that show!!) maybe it is the mix of terror, frustration, futility, fatalism and schadenfreude that is the economy, maybe it is that I've had a cold for four days and I'm exhausted and feeling kinda crummy. Maybe it is because my last two birthdays sucked huge donkey junk. Maybe it is because as I reach the event horizon from which I can see my own eventual mortality, I want, more than anything, to be transformed. And I want you to transform with me. I want us all to take this spaceship to the next level and evolve. I know we can do it, I just know we can. We have to.

So come with me to celebrate another trip around the sun, welcome the ghosts of past and future (because you know that there are backwards-ghosts don't you?) to breach the space-time continuum and join with us in a timeless invocation of endless possibility.

I don't know how we're going to do this so bring your imagination and a costume and I think there's gonna be cake. My trusty support team tells me there will be cake. Bring your best self, come dressed as what you fear most and let's exorcise fear and move forward with hope, conviction and vision. Peace. Dig it? Amen.

This is not only a birthday party but a BENEFIT PARTY and while donations are not required, they are gratefully accepted. If you have enjoyed reading Culturebot for the past five years (as of December!), if you support the work that we're doing - and hope to be doing - at IRT; if you LOVE ME then SHOW ME! (Just Kidding. Kind of.) Seriously - I hope you'll come and celebrate with me, I also hope that those of you who are in a position to donate, will. And if you are a big-deal philanthropist or business tycoon or venture capitalist looking to make a difference, please don't hesitate to contact me. We've got big dreams and lots of talent, all we need is a capital infusion. Where it counts.

If you can't come to the party, you can still give online using PAYPAL for Culturebot or via Google for IRT.

I haven't talked about David Cook in about 2 weeks (other than to...vent?), so it's about time for some DC news. First off, Cook picked up a #17 debut last week on the Hot 100 with "Light On", which has been growing on me quite a bit. The record went to radio last week, so we'll see how it does, as it's dropped down to #66 on iTunes at the moment. It's an interesting strategy to go to retail so soon without building a buzz, but you've got to figure the folks at 19 may have a little bit of experience at breaking a new artist.

More importantly, David's CD comes out November 18th, and they have released a track listing. From ew.com:

Mastering on his self-titled album was completed in New York earlier this week, with Cook personally overseeing the finishing touches on 12 tracks, 11 of which he wrote or cowrote. Other songwriters who made the cut: Goo Goo Dolls' Johnny Rzeznik, Our Lady Peace singer Raine Maida (who's credited on four songs), Cathy Dennis (of Britney Spears "Toxic" fame), and, of course, Chris Cornell, who wrote the single "Light On."

Okay...Rzeznik, check. Our Lady Peace, check. Cathy Dennis...WTF? Seriously? Okay. Just breathe, John. David Cook co-wrote with Cathy Dennis. Nothing to see here. Go on about your business.

Can you tell I'm a fan? The Dennis/Cook collaboration really sounds intriguing, so I'm eager to hear what comes out of it. It says a lot about 19's confidence in him that he actually co-wrote 11 of the 12 tracks on the CD. Now let's see him get out there and sell it!

Five long years ago I went to a concert in downtown Detroit, Mich., to see a band called Blindside who was currently signed with P.O.D's label. Too much of my surprise I tagged along not knowing to many songs of the band but I ended up finding a band named Pacifier playing that night. I first tuned in because they were from Wellington, New Zealand and I myself lived in Australia for a few years. After the show I was so blown away that I had to talk with the band. The stage presence and awesome rock lead me to buy their CD on the spot and had it signed by their lead singer, Jon Toogood. For two years, that self titled album did not leave my car. It seemed that rock music was supposed to sound like this. With songs like "Bulletproof", "Run", and "Comfort Me" it was bound to hit the American airwaves. Well it did a little bit. The single "BulletProof hit the American airwaves on radio and even MTV but only for short notice.

Since those wonderful days, I could barely find them anywhere on the internet until TODAY. Come to find out that they changed their name to Shihad a couple years ago. It was a honest name change in honor of the war in Iraq. Now three #1 albums and 4 top ten singles in New Zealand what is the rest of the world waiting for. Well I guess me for now but due check them out all over the web. Their sound reminds me of a bit softer version of Nine Inch Nails and H.I.M in one band = AWESOME.

In 2003, a new band from New Jersey formed and soon sign to a record label. Does this sound familiar...Well it should because The Early November and Senses Fail did the same thing when signing to Drive Thru Records. Well Houston Calls actually signed with Rushmore Records which is a subsidiary of DTR. The release of their debut album, A Collection of Short Stories, a short 11-track disc, was filled with pop-punk anthems like "Exit, Emergency" and "Bob and Bonnie". Each song was exemplified with strong electro keys and great punk riffs that had fans following one by one. I myself could not stop listening to the whole album for the longest time. They actually perform a great cover of the Counting Crows' song "Einstein on the Beach".

On this past Tuesday the Oct. 14th, 2009, marked the release of their long awaited sophomore album "The End of an Error". The project has been long overdue since a new member, Jose, joined the group and the band officially is signed with Drive Thru Records. The new album is highlighted with two songs which are up on their MySpace named "Modest Manifesto" and "Life Won't Wait". The album picks up where their debut left off. Maybe DTR was right when they told to re-think the album because it resulted in another great album. So if you like band like bands like Panic! or Hellogoodbye, this is definitely the band for you.

- As predicted, "Womanizer" sprints from #96 to #1, giving her the longest jump up the Hot 100 in history. It may be hard for her to repeat next week, though, given how iTunes, due to a "glitch", dropped "Womanizer" from its site on Tuesday. The track has been re-upped, but the damage may have already been done for next week's chart. In other Britney news, she's going on tour next Spring, and she had a Starbucks Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate yesterday.

- PMN faves the Indigo Girls have a new CD ready to go sometime in the near future in two formats: with a full band, and just the two of them acoustic. Since they were dropped from Hollywood Records last year ("a real blessing", says Amy Ray), the duo can pursue any option they want, but plan to stay independent for the foreseeable future. They do have their own label, so they know what they're doing. BTW, Amy's solo tour kicks off next week in Nashville.

- Nutty rocker Justin Hawkins, formerly of the Darkness, is out with a new group called Hot Leg. They'll have a single out next week, and a CD out in January. After having heard his contribution for Eurovision, I'm surprised they let him record anything. The world will look up, yawn, and then go back to filing their nails.

- New releases this week include Keane, Keane and Keane. Does anything else matter? Well, there's also a lot of Christmas crap getting released, along with Ray Montagne, Kenny Chesney, Ingrid Michaelson, Nikka Costa, and ('cause they need the money) Sixpence None the Richer. Speaking of Christmas, it's like that for hip-hop fans, with new singles from Fitty, Ludacris, and T-Pain. Other singles of note include more Taylor Swift, John Legend and Fall Out Boy, as well as a pretty cool cover of "A Change Is Gonna Come" by Seal.

"The Spotlight turns to Notebooks" ist das Schlagwort.

I need to apologize all fans and readers, and specially my partner Nati, cause i was out the last days! I`m really sorry. But I`m sadder 'cause I won't see Gossip in Brazil in Tim Festival. Yes, they sended a cute letter telling that they have problems in their agenda, but they love the south american fans and blablablah... if it's true or not I don't know, but I'm sure they will earn more money with their other concert... anyway, we hope they come soon to Brazil.

As sushi fanatics are waking up to the fact that their beloved cuisine is wreaking havoc on ecosystems, interest in sustainable sushi options is spreading rapidly throughout the blogosphere. The current wave of awareness began with an article in Gourmet magazine and was bolstered by the news that sustainable sushi cards will be released on October 22nd by three nonprofits: Monterey Bay Aquarium, Blue Ocean Institute, and Environmental Defense Fund.

In January 2009, North Atlantic Books will release Sustainable Sushi: A Guide to Saving the Oceans One Bite at a Time. This comprehensive, pocket-size guide provides all of the pertinent information needed to make sustainable choices at the sushi bar, from detailed profiles of 39 species of fish to a color-coded warning system that helps consumers choose sustainable options. Health concerns regarding mercury and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) levels are also addressed. Check out a recent review of the guide by The Alternative Consumer.

Sustainable Sushi was created by Casson Trenor, a fisheries expert who helped launch Tataki, currently the only sustainable sushi bar in the country. Casson has made it his life mission to protect our marine resources around the globe, and he pours years worth of research and insight into the guide.

At 130 pages, Sustainable Sushi looks great and is filled with color photos and illustrations. We hope that the information provided in the guide will supplement that of the sushi cards released in October. It's exciting to see an increase in awareness surrounding this issue—not only will this awareness provide for a direct positive impact on marine ecosystems, but it also serves as a step in a larger struggle for environmental consciousness. Every decision we make as consumers comes with a cost, and it's great to have information and options available to make those costs less destructive.

Should be interesting:

The (non) narrative use of language, voice and sound in performance

Tuesday, Oct 14 at 7:30pm at DTW
Organized by Chase Granoff

This conversation will explore the interest of spoken language and verbal sound in contemporary performance. We will discuss the narrative vs. non-narrative, and the tangible vs. the abstract. How does language (in) form the body? Do language and sound create a choreographic body? Join invited participants John Jesurun, Jenn Joy, Tere O'Connor, Ann Liv Young and others in this discussion.

A new initiative of Dance Theater Workshop, Lobby TALKS creates a forum for open and in-depth discourse on contemporary issues in dance and performance. Organized around specific themes, each meeting uses as a starting point one or more of the artistic investigations, methodologies, and motivations that can be seen in performance today and on our current season. Subjects will be investigated, challenged, and considered by an invited group of artists, critics, and theorists, and is open to all who would like to join the conversation.

So I have a quandry...there are all of these shows I want to see right now but can't because I am busy putting together the festival.

There seems to be a wealth of shows I want to catch right now and just don't have the time or money...mostly time...not that I have a lot of money, but time is lacking in order to spend the money, that probably doesn't exist anyway....

ANYWAYS...

I want to see DOCTOR ATOMIC at the Met. John Adams and a director who has never (EVER) done stage before. sounds like it will be either amazing or a big wah wah

WIG OUT at the Vineyard. I love the Vineyard...but alas...no idea when I can find time to catch Tina's latest show...this time with Drag Queens...very different thatn the shape-shift botos

THE CLASS PROJECT, joe Salvatore at NYU is directing a new devised piece...and I love (hate) devised pieces and know that Joe will do an amazing job at it. But I just can't go.

I am intrigued by the new Naked Angels production at the Cherry Lane.

In general, I think everything needs to extend a bit in order to accomodate by schedule!

Staton grew up in gospel music. As a teenager she sang with the Jewel Gospel Trio in the 1950s and toured with Sam Cooke, Mahalia Jackson and the Staple Singers. In 1969, she made the leap into secular music with a string of Top Ten hits for Capitol Records such as “Stand By Your Man” and the Grammy-nominated “In the Ghetto.” She then moved to Warner Bros. Records where she enjoyed disco smashes such as “Victim,” “When You Wake Up Tomorrow” and the 1976 million-seller “Young Hearts Run Free.” In 1983, her first gospel album “Make Me An Instrument” peaked at 7 on the Billboard gospel charts and garnered her third Grammy Award nomination. Various remixes of Staton’s gospel song “You Got the Love” have hit the Top Ten of the British pop charts in 1991, 1997 and 1996. The song has sold 3 million copies worldwide and been featured in the finale episode of HBO’s “Sex in the City” TV series.

WARNING: It is going to be very cold at the Sierras on Saturday (36-43 degrees F). Please dress warmly and layer. Don't worry, we have backup plans if it's too cold to go boating!!

Kairos 2 Bible study is back on Friday night!! We will meet at 6:30pm for dinner and then watch "Everything is Spiritual," an awesome DVD by Rob Bell that talks about the consistency between the Genesis creation story and science, life, and reality.

[caption id="attachment_463" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Rob Bell DVD on Genesis 1 during Kairos 2 Bible Study this week!"][/caption]

Afterwards, we will have a sleepover at Andy's house for the guys and Michelle and Tracy's house for the girls. We will gather at my house for a time of studying and Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream!! That's right, you read this correctly, we will be studying since a bunch of us will be heading out for our Sierra Trip.

FINALLY, we will be leaving for our our Sierra Trip on Saturday morning and returning Sunday Morning! Our plan is to Kayak down the Truckee River, a smooth, safe, but exciting trek that includes small island stops, sandy beach fronts, and of course, some good water battles! We will also go hiking, flashlight trailblazing, star gazing, along with some archery, studying (that's right!!), and great food! Somehow, we will squeeze all that in our trip so you won't want to miss it!! Unlike previously stated, this will just be a Kairos 2 trip so it will be cozier.

[caption id="attachment_468" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="I can't wait to get some fresh forest air, introduce everyone to our sierra lodge, and go kayaking down the Truckee River!!"][/caption]

Hi folks, as we’ve mentioned this past Friday, we won’t be having our regular Bible Stud

Hi folks, as we've mentioned this past Friday, we won't be having our regular Bible Study this week. Rather, we'll be having a treat: we're going to Sierra Lodge for two whole days (Friday-Saturday)!

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Kayaking at a nearby lake"][/caption]

Though the Sierra Barn may not be finished just yet, the lodge itself is. Many of you (mostly the freshmen) haven't been up there yet, so believe me when I say that our lodge is just gorgeous. Not only will the lodging be provided, but we've also built our own basketball court and made a clearing for archery. In case that gets old, you're able to walk around in the beautiful, lush forest that is the Sierras, and we'll even go out to Lake Spaulding (only a stone's throw away) to go water-dunking kayaking.

So, what are you waiting for? Please SIGN UP by this Wednesday 11pm, for we need to prepare food and rides beforehand. Remember, $35 for two jam-packed days of fun! Since many of you will be done with yet another bout against midterms, why not enjoy the fresh air (and perhaps experience the cool lake) and take a breather in the woods with us?
