Scale was down to 221 this morning which is huge for me, I've blown the 50 pound  mark out of the water.  I started this journey at 273 pounds so that's a grand total of 52 pounds.  I was retaining a lot of water due to TOM and it should be gone now.  I can't wait to hit the 21-'s!! 

I think my fiance is getting a little nervous about me weighing less than him.  He has always been smaller.  I'm catching up with him.  When we first started dating I weighed about what I weigh now, but he weighed about 165 (he's 5'11").  Needless to say 5 years with me has helped him "pudge" up a little.  He now weighs about 190 pounds.  I can wear his clothes now hehehe.  Not that I want to wear guys clothes, but you know sometimes when I'm lazing around...

We've set a date.  Sept 4 Key West.  I've purchased airline tickets for his sister and her husband. My mom  and stepdad are flying down also.  Its going to be small on the beach.  Its funny, Chris already has everything he needs to get married, he's had his band for over a year now, we picked it up in a antique shop.  We bought his wedding shirt while on vacation in St Martin.  Its just a simple linen tunic with embroidery and I just found his pants at Marshalls for 20 bucks. 

I on the other hand have nothing...No dress, no ring!  My ring is being made and is supposed to be done by the end of this month, but as far as my dress goes I'm still struggling.  I don't want a "traditional" gown by any means.  I would just be happy with a simple ivory/white dress.  I'm not too crazy about my arms so I don't really want to go with the ones the just cover the tops of your boobs.  I could probably put up with a halter style.

I went into David's Bridal Tuesday night, I had gone over to my band office for a support meeting and they are right next door.  I should have known not to go in there by myself, but this is another lesson I have learned.  I just have to say, was sadistic bastard decided that a size 14 woman needs a size 18 or 16W wedding dress.  If anything wedding dresses should run the other way so that you can find joy in the size of it.  I know altered realities, lies, I don't give a shit, lie to me just this once.  Can't I be a 10 on my special day?  Ok, Ok, I'll stop whining...

So anyways, didn't find anything at all at David's Bridal, there are a couple more shops around here that I can look at, but who knows

Almost forgot.  Going to Nashville tomorrow, going to go see Alison Krauss and Robert Plant in concert.  I actually saw them in Knoxville a few months ago.  I liked it so much I'm going again.  Its a really good concert.  I've been a Led Zep fan since I got out of my training bras...At the last concert they did covers of 1.Black Dog 2. Battle of Evermore 3.  When the Levee Breaks 4. Hey, Hey What Can I Do?.  I wasn't too crazy about their rendition of Black Dog, it was Scat Style, kinda weird for me...

I leave from Nashville on Sunday and drive to Charlotte, NC for the National Women In Nuclear (WIN) conference.  Pretty excited about going to that.  Trying to meet and greet.  The nuclear industry is a pretty small world for women.  There aren't many of us around.

So I won't be updating the blog or my daily weights until July 24...

Last night I ripped into the dress. After the carnage was complete, I was absolutely covered in little bits and pieces of thread, as was the couch, the floor and the coffee table. It was a bit like unraveling a puzzle, and it wasn't as monotonous as I expected it to be although it definitely was time consuming.

Today I manged to lay it all out to get a sense of how much fabric there really was.

Think there is enough fabric for a dress for a newborn and a three year old, and one little one year old boy? There are two layers !! of lining, all piled up in the front corner, and since it's all polyester, maybe I can put some of that to use as well!

The only piece I left was the bodice... can't really decide if there's enough fabric to do anything with those little bits, so I'm going to leave it as is for a minute.

I also have these lovely bits of fabric just waiting to be made into some hot weather maternity tops and maybe an outfit or two for the kids.

Not really sure what to do with that striped silk... it's rather too stiff for clothing, but I love it so much and I've wanted to do something with it for quite some time.

And finally, I have two gorgeous thrift finds--never worn with original tags!!--to show. Hoping to tailor them for maternity wear... but, uh, I haven't really ever tailored anything before. We'll see how I manage that. Any suggestions would be appreciated, as my searches for modifying for maternity haven't really come up with anything other than instructions for changing up your favorite jeans!

I'm starting to think that I might have a bit more projects than I have time. Help!!

You know I look amazing on you.  But I must beg the question:  what are doing to your bridesmaids?  Gone are the days of ugly "don't look at me!" bridesmaid dresses.  The way I see it, your bridesmaids should look beautiful.  You're going to shine no matter what.  They are no competition!  So here's a tip: fit them in a frock that will complement my beauty, not detract from it.  After all, no one wants to go back and photoshop out puff sleeves and giant bows from their wedding album.  Give the girls a break!  Trust me, they'll return the favor.

Picardie is a fashion journalist and this memoir is part fashion report and part sociological examination. 

She begins by talking about her mother’s wedding dress, a black French cocktail dress from a boutique in Hampstead, and how she herself felt at eighteen when she wore the dress, and what the dress meant to the two of them. 

She then goes on to give us glimpses of her life as she remembers various items of apparel she has owned or seen or wondered about. She talks about an orange dress (bought at the Beatles’ Apple Shop) with little mirrors sewn on that she had as a child and wore until it fell apart.  She got it the same summer she saw Mick Jagger in a white dress (tunic) standing in sunshine surrounded by white butterflies.  What a vision!

Her chapter headings give only the briefest hint of the richness she brings to her narrative.  The titles “Plastic Trousers” (ugh, the thought of wearing something like that), “The Women in White”, “Scarlet Women” all are tantalizing in their brevity. 

We all wear clothes, and many of us spend time and effort trying to get “it” just right.  We want to look good and, maybe, make a statement.  The phrase “power suit” was coined for the new professional woman in her tailored suit.  Picardie devotes a bit of space to the advent of Coco Chanel and her philosophy that said clothes should be comfortable, timeless, and wearable.  She felt there was no real need to make a statement by contriving a costume. 

Now, what kind of memoir could I write about my life in fashion?  Pretty slim one, actually, so I guess I will just get on with my reading.

I started by removing the beads.

When I bought the dress, I thought it had a minimal amount of beading. When I sat down to remove all of them, I noticed two things: one, there were a good deal more beads than I first believed and two, the dress was rather filthy. By the time I managed to rip off all the beads, I realized that maybe my original assumption was correct, there wasn't really that many.

I was hoping to send these beads off to a local artist, Memphis George, whose jewelery I both own and adore, to have her create a necklace using what I have as a starting point. Now I'm wondering if there's enough. Of course, I do have a little headpiece full of crystals to add, so maybe she'll still be able to make something interesting. Plus, I was hoping that she could add some color as well, so maybe I shouldn't worry.

Once it was time to start ripping out seams, I was really considering taking the whole thing to the cleaners to get the fabric ready for sewing. Maybe it would be easier to clean it if the dress was still whole, although I thought if it was silk, then I should be able to soak it and get some of the spots in the more obvious areas taken care of myself. Then I happened upon the tag.

Huh! Whoddathunk? I never once considered what the make of the fabric was, and although I still love the dress, it certainly made me feel a bit of remorse over how much I paid.

Into the wash it goes! We'll see how it comes out in another few minutes.

Obvs kidding. Anyway, my mom and I rushed  the dress to our local tailor, a sassy Bolivian-American named Tancy. This followed an all out ma- freak out when I tried it on at home. I had known it wasn't perfect. I admit, my love for the dress and my struggle and triumphs over the process of commissioning it in Beijing had blinded me to its faults. I was wearing lover's goggles. Tancy, however, was not. She squinted at the seams of the lining. "Oh yeah, I've dealt with Chinese-made dresses before." The seams were sloppy near the top, but it was a relatively easy fix, she said. Also, the Chinese tailor had sewn the v-neck shut at the bottom, and the seams on the boddice in the front were sloppily pleated. It was looking all kinds of matronly when I tried it on. I stood on a pedestool in front of her big mirror triad and held out my arms. Tancy undid the offending stitching, pushed the material here, stuck a pin there and we all breathed a sigh of relief. It was fixable. Two days later, after perusing bridal mags, which are full right now of various neoclassical, empire waist A-line styles, my ma and I rushed back to Tancy with a new idea. The dress was missing a certain...oomph. We told her we wanted to add We a band of some sort under the bodice. Tancy ran to the back of the store and came out with a thick, long satin ribbon. She pinned it under the bodice, made a knot at the back, and let the remaining fabric run down the back of the dress. I'll post a pic when it is complete next month. My goggles are off...but I still love this dress.
