The Company Site Representative (CSR) had finished his round of inspection at the platform. Gundol, the CSR, decided to return back to the work boat. He had his life vest on with a full set of PPE (personal protective equipment). To move from the platform to the work boat and vice versa required one to walk and cross a suspended metal gangway. He was crossing the gangway and upon reaching the end near the work boat, Gundol held tight to a swing rope. He would jump once the watchman at the stern had adjusted the position of the staircase. Like a Tarzan he swung himself. The onlookers at the main deck expected to see him on the staircase.

A loud splashing sound was heard. No one appeared on the staircase. He had taken a dip in the sea. He was floating like a half sunken bottle. A bit shaken and wet, he was fished out from the sea and back to the main deck.

Gundol was a talkative plump man in his 50s. When he made his swing, he only reached the half way point between the gangway and the stair case. Due to his own heaviness he couldn’t cling onto the rope and fell. He was very lucky as he didn’t sustain any injury.

Somehow this incident was not reported. It was covered up. A junior personnel would definitely face the investigation team from shore.

I'm mainly writing to tell you that I finally have an offline edit of 'Dirty Egg', the short film produced by LCM and written and directed by the very talented Patrick Coyle. It's incedibly funny (in a dark/ shouldn't be quite so funny kind of way) but it's also inredibly long. Next step is to get it to Dickkie, our wonderful editor who will string it together in HD ready for festivals.

I'm hoping we can jump onto a festival with this before the year is out, hopefully screening in Manchester and Birmingham.

I have tried to give this picture a social commentary theme, using the dark water and the blurred cigerette packet to represent the dangers of prolonged smoking. It was called "Emphysema".

As promised I am going to write several posts over the next week or so about the various different aspects of sculptural feltmaking that I learnt at the Anita Larkin workshop last weekend.  I was a bit physically tired when I got to Dublin and probably that made certain things seem very difficult to master.  Day 1 was actually more successful for me than day 2 but obviously mistakes and disasters are also informative so hopefully I can learn something from them as well!

We started the first day by making felt balls, a TOTALLY different method than any I have ever used or heard of to date.  Using merino roving we laid out a square shape using several thin layers of wool (approx 5) on a bamboo blind and then 'dry' felted it for a few seconds.  This was done by placing the palm of our hand on the pile of fibres and slightly moving our hand in a circular motion.  Next we folded up the corner of two sides to form an angle and lifted the pile in our hands.  The rest of the wool was shaped into a ball by rotating the fibres around this angle, a bit like wrapping or rolling a wan ton.  Careful attention was paid to the last fibres completing the ball making sure that they did not form any ridges.  The resulting ball was then held VERY LIGHTLY in one hand and dunked into hot water for no more that a second.  When lifted out of the water we then used our other hand to very carefully stroke the ball with soapy fingers.  The idea was to form a skin on the ball but to have the inside fibres basically almost totally dry and unfelted.  At this pre pre felt stage the balls were amazingly light and spongy.  Anita explained to us that at this stage if we kept lightly wetting, soaping and rolling or working the ball by hand the fibres would always move to the centre and form a ball.  HOWEVER, because the outside skin was barely formed and the inside was not felted at all we now had the option of forming any shape we wanted, amazing!  By manipulating the ball in various ways an almost infinite number of shapes can be made.  I made a star fruit shape by placing the ball between my two index and middle fingers and squeezing and working it into shape.  If I cut it into a cross section it would look like an X, hope you can visualise this from my explanation.  As the shape is forming you can suspend work and decide to attach it to another piece of felt aided by a wire brush.  Why not try making a shape for yourself and we can learn more on the next post tomorrow!!

You can get a good photo in any kind of weather. Today was gloomy with heavy rain, but as it lightened up a bit in the early evening, I went to my neighbour's garden with my macro lens and a tripod. This kind of shot is difficult to get right because you want a fair amount of depth of field and a background blur at the same time. I took this one using manual focus at f/8 with a shutter speed of just 1/5 second to keep the ISO at 100. The sharpness is pretty good overall, although only the centre is fully in focus. The image has not been sharpened. I submitted this one to the PhotoShelter Collection because I know that this kind of picture is in relatively high demand (and because I like the way it came out).

Who leads the hand shake?  Who decides if it will be a limp or firm shake or a bouncing shake?

Generally, I used to think that you shake softer for a lady and firmer for a guy but I have had women grip my hand and shake it so hard that I can only imagine how hard she grips her man's unit! 

What about the sweaty handshakes?  I've had handshakes so wet that I could have slicked my hair back when we were done.

This is actually a pretty random picture. But it was raining all day and I wanted a macro shot.

This is the second time I have shot this figure, the first set done at the beginning of this year were set against a red background, however there was something a miss with the colouration's. I am a lot more satisfied with this set of shots.

This summer has done nothing but go back and forth between rainy and muggy.   But at least we've been blessed with a few fantastic days.

It rained like crazy on Tuesday and I only had to use my windshield wipers when driving under 35MPH.  About 90% of my driving is on the Turnpike so Rain-X works awesome for me.  It just blows me away how the water just hits the windshield and rolls right up and off at a very high rate of speed.  The faster you go the faster it comes off the windshield.  I love it.
