The Washington Times

COMMENTARY:

President Bush was on message Wednesday in a Rose Garden news conference when he kept up the pressure on his a drill, drill, drill offensive. He said he knows Americans are worried about gasoline prices, and said he wants them "to understand fully that we have got the opportunity to find more crude oil here at home in environmentally friendly ways."

He specifically mentioned opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska, the Outer Continental Shelf and oil-shale exploration. He also took a whack at lawmakers, saying, "The Democratically controlled Congress has refused to budge."

That's spot-on correct. But it has me wondering. Where in the world is Sen. John McCain on this very same issue? It's simple: Mr. McCain should be pummeling Sen. Barack Obama daily on drill, drill, drill. Why? Because oil and gas pump prices are potentially the single-biggest wedge issue in the presidential campaign. Mr. McCain has to pound the point home.

According to a new Rasmussen poll, 48 percent of Americans say lower gas prices are the key to an economic recovery, and 60 percent are in favor of offshore drilling.

Oil drilling rigs in Midland County, Texas. Oil prices surged to new highs Monday as leading figures from the energy industry gathered in Madrid amid growing public anger at the high cost of fuel and increasing concerns about inflation.

Here's another one. Rasmussen asked voters about the now-infamous Harry Reid YouTube video, where the senator says coal and oil are making us sick, and that fossil-fueled global warming is "ruining our country" and "ruining our world." Well, Rasmussen shows 52 percent of voters reject Mr. Reid on coal; 50 percent disagree with him on oil; and 51 reject his idea that we need to stop using fossil fuels.

And all this is Mr. McCain's opportunity. He needs to hammer away on an America First energy policy that will completely deregulate and decontrol this nation's great energy industry. He needs to mothball his errant statements on "obscene oil profits." Instead, he needs to support and unleash all of our energy companies and entrepreneurs, allowing them to develop whatever it takes on oil, gas-to-liquid, clean coal, nuclear, offshore, onshore, oil shale, wind, solar, and biofuel.

America First should be the rallying cry. We have the natural resources to become the Saudi Arabia of coal the Saudi Arabia of oil. Lift the moratoriums. Stop attacking our own businesses. Put technology to work. Put venture capital to work, with rock-bottom capital-gains and corporate tax rates. Stop being mau-maued by the extremist greenies who have prevented energy production for more than three decades. America First. Unleash our free-enterprise energy sector: 2 trillion barrels worth of shale; 90 billion barrels of offshore oil; at least 10 billion barrels up in ANWR and more throughout Alaska, both onshore and off.

Politically, Mr. McCain must also understand how Hillary Clinton clobbered Barack Obama in the big state primaries: Blue-collar workers. They can be the key to victory for Mr. McCain. Guess who works in the energy business? Blue-collar Reagan Democrats. They work on the rigs. They work in the fields. They drive the trucks. And they're paid high wages - substantially above the average hourly wage.

Or Mr. McCain can sell it this way: American workers are worried about jobs going offshore to India, China, Vietnam and Bangladesh. Well, a drill, drill, drill, America First energy plan would create millions of new American jobs.

Of course, there's also a national security aspect to this. Worried about funding terrorist rogue states? Drill, drill, drill. A complete portfolio of oil energy sources in America - that's the answer.

And while he's at it, Mr. McCain should stop blaming "reckless traders." As soon as you say "end the drilling moratoriums," it is precisely those traders who will start oil contracts - long before the first offshore oil barrels are delivered to market. If they see presidential leadership on oil and shale drilling, they will rapidly turn a bull market into a bear market.

Mr. Obama opposes drilling. Opposes nuclear. Opposes coal. He and Harry Reid believe wind, solar and ethanol are the answers. They're not. It's doubtful even at full development and commercialization that these alternative technologies will ever power more than 10 percent of our energy needs. We should go down this road as part of a full energy portfolio. But let's not kid ourselves: These sources alone will never be sufficient.

Mr. McCain has to make this case daily. He must contrast his America First energy plan with Mr. Obama's declinist American vision. He must argue America First for fuel, power, jobs, wages and national security. He must enlist the Reagan Democrats who may be out of work and are surely angry at $4 gas at the pump and $140 a barrel oil in the world market.

Take a page from Ronald Reagan, Mr. McCain. Be optimistic about our future. Be clear, straightforward, and consistent. We can grow this economy and remain number one. This is how to do it.

So this is the first Fourth of July that I pretty much did next to nothing. Granted, it was exceptionally hot all day, and I did get to finally see WALL-E, but other than that, there was nothing making this an exceptional Fourth.

That is, until the evening. I got together with Johnnie, and my best friend Triana, her little sister (who's visiting from OH), and my other friend Josh. We decided to all meet up at the local ballpark (PSC) and watch their firework show. It wasn't much, but with admission at $5.00 a head, we were expecting a little more than what greeted us there.

But, at least there was fun to be had. The wind was howling and there were monsoon clouds creeping up the horizon, making it a very iffy firework show at best. The weather held out though, and sure enough, when 9:15 rolled around, up went the fireworks.

This homily has been posted with the direct and generous permission of the late Fr. Thomas Harding, Th.D. (1918-2005).

Because 1998 was the year of the Holy Spirit it is important that we emphasize the role of the Holy Spirit in the PLAN OF GOD and in this period of the history of the Church from the First Pentecost until the end of time and for all eternity.

In the Apostles' Creed we say: "I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen."

In the Nicene Creed we say: "We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen."

The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament

There are Biblical texts dealing with the Spirit of God from the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament to the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. We will mention a few of the familiar ones.

In Genesis 1:1-2a:4a we read "In the beginning, God created heaven and earth and the earth was void and empty and darkness was on the face of the deep and the Spirit of God moved over the waters. Then God said ‘Let there be light', and there was light God saw how good the light was." This is actually the second account of creation by the Priestly author of a later date.

The first account by the author known as YAHWIST because he referred to God as YAHWEH is in Genesis 2:4-7 where we read: "At the time when God made the earth and the heavens while as yet there was no field shrub on the earth and no grass of the field had sprouted, for the Lord God had sent no rain upon the earth and there was no man to till the soil but a stream was welling up out of the earth and was watering all the suiface of the ground The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life and so man became a living being."

The YAHWIST has no interest in the formation of cosmic light or the sun, moon and stars as Father George Montague says in his book entitled The Holy Spirit: Growth of a Biblical Tradition, because his interest is restricted to the earth and the things that immediately touch human life: water, earth, the sown land, animals, woman. His interest is centred in man who is ADAM for the ADAMAH, earthman from the earth.

Other popular texts from the Old Testament referring to the Holy Spirit or adaptable to His action are as follows:

In Isaiah 11:2-3. we read: "The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him; a Spirit of wisdom and understanding, a Spirit of counsel and strength. a Spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord." There is no explicit mention of piety in this text but it may be included in the opening words of the quotation. At any rate these Isaiah gifts are the general characteristics of the Messiah who is to come and, we hope. of his future followers who receive the Holy Spirit and His gifts in Baptism and Confirmation.

In Jeremiah 31:31-33, we read: "I will make a new covenant... I will put my law within them and I will write it upon their hearts."

In the prophet Ezekiel 36:26, we read, "I will give you a new heart and place a new Spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts."

In the prophet Joel 3:1-2, we read: "I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and daughters shall prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. Even upon the servants and handmaids, I will pour out my Spirit."

As we say in the Nicene Creed: "He" that is, "the Holy Spirit spoke through the prophets." He truly spoke through all the prophets of the Old Testament and through Jesus Christ, the Priest, Prophet and King of the New Testament!

The Holy Spirit by His Inspiration is the Principal Author of the books of both Testaments. And yet it is difficult to find a direct quotation from the Holy Spirit Himself in the Scriptures. There are many indications of the Holy Spirit speaking in the New Testament:

MATTHEW 10:19-21 "When they hand you over, do not worry about what you will say or how you will say it. When the hour comes you will be given what you are to say. You yourselves will not be the speakers; the Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you.." This is commonly referred to as "the Dabitur Vobis" which translated into English means: "It will be given to you."

Another oft-quoted text in this regard is JOHN 3-8: "The wind blows where it will you hear the sound it makes but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone begotten by the Spirit."

The text of Paul to the Romans 8:26-27 is very comforting for all of us: "The Spirit too helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in speech. He who searches hearts knows what the Spirit means, for the Spirit intercedes for the saints as God Himself wills." Again St. Paul says in I Corinthians 12:3 just before he lists the charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit: "And no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord' except in the Spirit." So when you pray, be open to the Holy Spirit and He will take over. Invite Him to take over and your prayer life will improve immensely.

Thus the Holy Spirit is constantly in communication with the Church and with her members from within. We are Temples of the Holy Spirit and since He is dwelling within us, we receive His messages directly in our minds and hearts and it is our obligation to accept them and act upon them.

The Holy Spirit in The New Testament

In his constitution on Confirmation in 1971, Pope Paul VI said the New Testament shows how the Holy Spirit assisted Jesus Christ throughout His whole Messianic Mission:

1) At the Annunciation the Angel Gabriel said to Mary: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and that which you conceive will be called the Son of God." Luke 1:35

2) On receiving the Baptism of John the Baptist, St. John the Evangelist said: "I beheld the Holy Spirit descending upon Him like a dove and it stayed upon Him!" John 1:32

3) After His Baptism, St. Mark said: "He was led by the Spirit into the desert and He was in the desertforforty days and forty nights, being tempted the while by Satan; and He was with the wild beasts and the angels came and ministered to Him." Mark 1:12-13

4) Teaching the people of Nazareth, He showed by what he said that the words of Isaiah referred to Himself: "the Spirit of the Lord is upon me." Luke 4: 17-21

5) He later promised before He suffered that "the Holy Spirit would help them to bear fearless witness to their faith before persecutors." Luke 12:12

6) The night before He died, He assured His Apostles that "He would send the Spirit of Truth upon them from the Father." John 15:26

7) After His Resurrection, He promised the coming descent of the Holy Spirit: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes down upon you and you Will be my witness in Jerusalem in all Judea and in Samaria and even to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8. He had told them: "not to depart from Jerusalem but to wait for the promise of the Father." Acts 1:4

8 ) After praying for nine days in the upper room: "the Apostles and the disciples with Mary, the mother of Jesus and the women and the brothers were ready to receive the Spirit " Acts 1:13-14

9) On the tenth day it is reported: "When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place. Suddenly, there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind blowing and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. They were all filled with the Iioij' Spirit and began to talk in other languages as the Holy Spirit enable them to speak." Acts 2:1-4

10) The Church was born and the believers began to preach the Good News: "There were Jews living in Jerusalem, religious people who had come from every country in the world. When they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered. They were all excited because they heard the believers talking in their own languages. In amazement and wonder they exclaimed: "These people who are talking like this are Galileans! How is it then, that all of us hear them speaking in our own native languages? We are from Parthia, Media and Elam from Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia; from Pontus and Asis, from Phrygia and Pamphylia, from Egypt and the regions of Libya near Cyrene. Some of us are from Rome, but Jews and Gentiles converted to Judaism and some of us are from Crete and Arabia -yet all of us hear them speaking in our own languages about the great things God has done." Acts 2:5-11

Titles of the Holy Spirit

1) Advocate: "These things I have spoken to you while yet dwelling with you. But the Advocate, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and will bring to mind whatever I have said to you." John 14:26 Advocate means lawyer, one who pleads our case.

2) Paraclete: "But I speak the truth to you; it is expedient for you that I depart For if I do not go, the Paraclete will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you." John 16:7-8 Paraclete means "Comforter", one who gives strength.

3) The Spirit of Truth: "But when the Advocate has come, the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness concerning me." John 15:26

4) The Love of God Personified: "And hope does not disappoint because the Love of God is poured forth in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:5

Father Bernard J. F. Lonergan, S.J., the great Canadian Theologian uses this text to contrast the Apostles' love of God before and after the coming of the Holy Spirit on the First Pentecost. For example, Peter loved the Lord with a human love on the first Good Friday and he denied Him three times during the Passion. However, after the descent of the Holy Spirit, he loved the Lord with the love of God, or with divine love and thus he was able to face persecution and he even asked that he be crucified upside down because he was unworthy to die like the Lord.

There are other titles for the Holy Spirit such as: Comforter, Sanctifier, the promised One of the Father, and the Inner Teacher, the Spirit of the Father and the Spirit of the Son.

Symbols of the Holy Spirit

1) A Dove: The dove has long been a sign of peace, gentleness and hope. "And the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form, like a dove. A voice came from Heaven: ‘You are my Son, the Beloved with whom I am well pleased" Luke 3:22

2) Wind: The word SPIRIT is etymologically from the word BREATH or WIND. Invisible and formless, the wind can caress us or overwhelm us with its power. "The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." John 3:8

"And when the days of Pentecost were drawing to a close, they were altogether in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a mighty wind blowing and it filled the whole house where they were sitting." Acts 2:1-2

3) Fire: Fire consumes and purifies, warms us and lights our path. "Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them and a tongue settled upon each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit." Acts, 2:3-4

4) Water: Water cleanses and refreshes, yet its power can carve a mountainside. "Those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty; but the water that I will give shall become a fountain of water springing up unto life everlasting." John 4:13-15

"On the last and most important day of the festival Jesus stood up and said in a loud voice, ‘Whoever is thirsty should come to me and drink As the scripture says, ‘Whoever believes in me, streams of life-giving water will pour out from his heart Jesus said this about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were going to receive. At that time the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not been raised to glory. John 7:37-39

This text is used to illustrate the growth in the Spirit in those who are living The life in the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit and the Church

God the Father's plan was to raise all the members of the human race to a participation of the divine life. When Adam sinned, He did not abandon human beings but sent His son Jesus Christ into the world as the Saviour and Redeemer. Christ inaugurated the Church, the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. He is the HEAD OF THE CHURCH.

When the work of redemption was completed, God the Father and God the Son sent God the Holy Spirit into the world that He might continually sanctify the Church and guide her until the end of time to preserve her from error and all dangers. The Holy Spirit, who is the Soul and the Life of the Church, gives her infallibility and indefectibility. He makes sure that the Church is One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic for all time to come.

Moreover, each member of the Church receives the Holy Spirit in the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation along with His Gifts and Fruits and all the other wonderful effects of these sacraments. (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Vatican II, Numbers 2-8 )

To all of our American readers out there, I hope you had a lovely 4th of July. This is the first time for both Pat and me to not be in America to celebrate Independence Day. While neither of us had severe pangs of homesickness, it did feel a bit odd to be at work instead of sitting outside in the sun eating burgers, potato salad, and homemade ice cream. (Well, I'd eat the potato salad. Pat wouldn't touch the stuff with a ten-foot pole.) And, of course, there were no fireworks to watch in the evening.

Actually, the weather yesterday was terrible! As they say here in Ireland, it was "lashing rain." Patrick Street is always very crowded during the day, and I had to run a few errands on my lunch break. In order to make any progress through the crowds, I had to hold my umbrella very close to my body. Every now and then a gust of wind would roll through and knock the stem of my umbrella against my glasses. It would catch me by surprise every time and elicit a few choice curse words. I probably looked like one of those crazy people on the streets who mutter and curse to themselves. I probably was one of those people.

I am one of four Americans working at the Cope Foundation. To mark Independence Day, and as an excuse to be social, the Six Pubs of Summer was planned. About 20 people from work met at Captain America's (an American-esque restaurant) for burgers and fries. After dinner, the group proceeded to a variety of pubs (six of them, as you might imagine) throughout the evening.

Pat had planned on joining the group later in the evening, but the weather proved to be too great a deterrent. I managed to hang in there with the group for the first three pubs, but then my 36-year-old body told me I should go home and I wisely decided to listen. Typically, an Irish night on the town will run until 2:30 in the morning. And some revelers will stay out even later than that. I'm just too old for that kind of fun.

It is definitely a different experience to be in another country on such a big American holiday. I wonder if I would have felt more homesick if the weather had been less inclement. I suspect the answer is yes, but since the likelihood of having a beautiful warm summer seems slim to none here in Ireland I may never know.

Whisper....whisper....

The word is caught in my head as the wind blows softly but carries no sound of yours. Distant music from some far off restaurant wafts in the heavy air. You would love it here, this beach, the sand, the water and its foam. There are few sea-gulls here. I suppose that means there are not very many fish in the sea. None like you, anyways.

I wish to fall asleep here, with the waves carying out sand from under me - sinking. I wonder if I'll wake up to find a message in a bottle you've sent me. I wonder if I'll wake up at all.

May the waves carry me to where you are.

I am currently looking for the best mini-notebook (others call it netbook) in the market, one that will give me the most bang for my money. I own a trusty HP Pavilion notebook but it has a 15-inch screen and weighs a couple of kilograms, which make lugging it everyday a real burden. I am therefore in need of a much smaller notebook that can do the simple tasks of word processing and internet surfing, which prompted me to search the internet for reviews on mini-notebooks. Notably, there has been a recent surge in the production of mini-notebooks after Asus became extremely successful with its first Asus Eee PC. By far, the mini-notebook models that caught my attention are the MSI Wind, the HP 2133 Mini-Note, the Asus Eee PC 1000 and the Acer Aspire One. These mini-notebooks create so much buzz in tech sites and forums I was compelled to do my own research on them.

The HP 2133 Mini-Note is the prettiest in the bunch. If not for its smaller screen (8.9 inches) and its processor (a Via C7-M processor), i would have easily picked this over the others. The Via C7-M processor used by the HP 2133 Mini-Note, based on almost all reviews I’ve read, is a rather slow processor compared to the Intel Atom processor used by the other mini-notebooks in the pack.

The Asus Eee PC 1000, a model yet to reach the Philippine market, is comparable to the MSI Wind in terms of specs and performance. It has an Intel Atom processor, a 10-inch screen, and a big hard disk space. It slightly looks better than the MSI Wind but its price tag makes the MSI Wind a more practical choice.

The Acer Aspire One, on the other hand, boasts of an attractive finish, a highly dependable Linpus Linux operating system, and a cheaper price tag. However, it only has an 8.9 inch screen and has a limited disk storage capacity.

After comparing the specs and respective price tags of all four models, the MSI Wind easily stands out from the pack. It is a well-designed netbook (available in white, black and pink packages) with a lid that features a low-luster finish resistant to fingerprint smudges (according to those who have actually tried the unit). It has a full-sized keyboard (92%), which will make typing a less daunting task (a big improvement from the smaller keyboard of the Asus Eee PC 701). It already employs the Intel Atom which runs at 1.6Ghz and can be overclocked up to 1.9Ghz at a single touch of a button. It has a huge storage capacity (the cheapest configuration has 80Gb of hard disk which goes up as high as 320Gb for the more expensive models) and runs on a Windows XP operating system.

Fonte: http://www.ilgiornale.it/a.pic1?ID=273369

i wish we could all choose our own ways of resting. why do we all have to SLEEP? it's so tame, it's so boring. it's so uniform.

and yeah i'll admit i'm completely fucking addicted to sleeping.. but if i really had my own choice.. i would choose to go driving every night. no lying dead remcycle for me, thanks.

"i never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death." -nas.

if nighttime drives were my rest i would rest early every night. i would climb into my heart and literally feel the day melting off of me.
i meant to type "car" but my fingers formed "heart" instead. hah, that's how much i love jane.

my rest would be me and the car and my music, the windows rolled down, filling my car with the sweet coolness of the night. filling my lungs with the air between two stars.

every night would be like a journey into my soul. and every night would be infinitely more beautiful than the most alluring of dreams in sleep. the feeling of boundlessness and freedom would be like a euphoric drug; the hum of the engine and the beats emanating from my speakers would bring me more comfort than any down blanket enveloping my body.
and there would be swirling stars to guide my roving path, and perhaps a warm hand to hold.
and every breath that escaped my lips would be a dancing cloud of joy and release.

my heart would stop racing, but beat steadily, and slowly, with sensual rhythm. lashes framing clear eyes like a crown.
there would only be clarity. there would only be music. and the rushing wind.

Barney - If You’re Happy & You Know It
If you are happy, you sing a song. If you are happy

Barney - If You're Happy & You Know It

If you are happy, you sing a song. If you are happy, you should tell people. If you are happy, you should spread the good news.

Yesterday, I was very happy. I was like a little bird that was being released from the cage. Though there was some kind of 'unhappiness' somewhere, still overall, it was a great day, a very great day.

A man carrying a bag on his bag walked towards me,"Excuse me, what country are you from?" He looked like Singaporean, Singaporean Chinese, the same colour as my skin, and looked about in his forties. I was surprised, and I told him,"Singapore!" He said,"Singaporean took Singapore's picture? So strange.." Then he walked off, I also walked off.

Who is more strange? I am very normal, and I feel proud to be a Singaporean now. I was 'cheated'(don't know what is the right word to use, not really cheated, but...) by Jehovah Witness. I shall elaborate more on that some other time.

I went Clarke Quay for 'FREE' Facial. After that, I went City Hall, I wanted to go there. So many places I wanted to go, I wanted to take my time, stroll and see, but as always, SOMEONE was not interested.

From far, Clara told me,"Cat! Got Cat there!" I was so shocked and so happy....

Running to the cat, I took out my camera, and he began to walk. He purred,"miao, miao", soft voice, though his much larger body than Puma Cat. I called him City Hall Cat. After him, Clara told me another cat coming from behind. It was so funny.... I called the cat, Sang Nila Utama Cat.

The last time I took my photo here, it was under construction... Around this place, the Singaporean Chinese Guy, someone who looked so much like 'Chua', asked for my nationality. He was not the first person to ask me.

So much changes, and everything was so beautiful. I went back to Raffles. There was so much things I need to learn about Singapore. I failed my History, History of Singapore, scored the lowest in the class, never interested in History, but now I am 'digging' history.

I cannot wait to tell you how great my day was. The pigeons, the eagle and the cats were with me, even though I had come to City Hall! They were not Woodlands birds and Woodlands cats, but City Hall Cats and birds. They looked different from Woodlands cats and birds -- the pigeons darker, the cats bigger size.

Walking from Clarke Quay to City Hall, this is the first building which I saw, and which inspired me, and also the City Hall Cat waiting for me there. It was a perfect weather, no rain, but windy, especially at the point where I reached City Hall. The wind was perfect. The wind blew and the flag was being blown, the sight of it, I don't know how to describe, it was so nice, so 'glorious'-- the flag waving in the air(飘扬), it was the pride of being a Singaporean, my home, my Singapore, the flag is something we should feel proud of....

[From summary] Although wind power currently provides only about 1% of U.S. electricity needs, it is growing more rapidly than any other energy source. In 2007, over 5,000 megawatts of new wind generating capacity were installed in the United States, second only to new natural gas-fired generating capacity. Wind power has become "mainstream" in many regions of the country, and is no longer considered an "alternative" energy source.

Wind energy has become increasingly competitive with other power generation options. Wind technology has improved significantly over the past two decades. CRS analysis presented here shows that wind energy still depends on federal tax incentives to compete, but that key uncertainties like climate policy, fossil fuel prices, and technology progress could dominate future cost competitiveness.

A key challenge for wind energy is that electricity production depends on when winds blow rather than when consumers need power. Wind's variability can create added expenses and complexity in balancing supply and demand on the grid. Recent studies imply that these integration costs do not become significant (5-10% of wholesale prices) until wind turbines account for 15-30% of the capacity in a given control area. Another concern is that new transmission infrastructure will be required to send the wind-generated power to demand centers. Building new lines can be expensive and time-consuming, and there are debates over how construction costs should be allocated among end-users and which pricing methodologies are best.

Federal wind power policy has centered primarily on the production tax credit (PTC), a business incentive to operate wind facilities. The PTC is set to expire on December 31, 2008. Analysts and wind industry representatives argue that the onagain off-again nature of the PTC is inefficient and leads to higher costs for the industry. While there is often bipartisan support for the PTC in Congress, debate centers more fundamentally on how to offset its revenue losses. A federal renewable portfolio standard - which would mandate wind power levels - was rejected in the Senate in late 2007; its future is uncertain.

If wind is to supply up to 20% of the nation's power by 2030, as suggested by a recent U.S. Department of Energy report, additional federal policies will likely be required to overcome barriers, and ensure development of an efficient wind market.

Right now today, there are incredible journeys taking place, whether it be that of Ingrid Betancourt

Right now today, there are incredible journeys taking place, whether it be that of Ingrid Betancourt rescued out of 7yrs of captivity in Columbia, or 59 so called "sex slaves", freed from appalling imprisonment in Glasgow, Scotland. Journeys are powerful.

It was Bilbo Baggins who said what a wonderful and dangerous thing it is to walk out of your own front door. " You step out on the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to." So that has been my experience and that of many who have walked with me as we have journeyed across Europe, quite literally walking from one continent into another through the global gateway city of Istanbul. The sights and sounds of each and every city and nation we have passed through feed the memories for months afterwards, bringing life to the soul when the drearyness of the routines of life crowd in.

I can imagine the image you get is of a bunch of super fit walking fanatics! Far from it! Its the love of the journey and the wonder of life on the road that draws us; the companionship of meandering down the coastal roads of southern France, alongside mates I've known for years or those who have just joined us for the first time-that's what excites. Yet without exception each of us have found an incredible synergy emerging between the life experiences that we are walking through at that particular time and the circumstances or events unfolding in the cities and nations we pass through. How can this be? Does this ring any bells for anyone else out there or has my imagination been flavoured too much by the spice bars of Damascus?

Thats why journeying is so powerful a tool in beginning to get in touch with the story lines in each of our lives. That's also why I am now beginning this online journey; to see what else can emerge when we simply step out of the door one day, or jump into cyber space, to see where the wind might take us.
