Through my window, the striated gray sky has set the climate. The street is empty, save the lazy leaves strewn around. I wish the trees would pick up for themselves - dressing right there in the open. Twigs and wilted men, bent over into the wind, climbing into mediocre. Not even a note is noticeable, I wonder, think and consider where we are.

I’m afraid it’s been so long since i wrote part three that if you were following it, you’ve probably lost track.

Anyway, after i got back to Vitoria from the crazed hitchiking trip to Portugal i felt that time was rapidly running out there for me. I’d almost come to the end of my savings and there was no prospect of getting a job. Winter was coming, too - and as Vitoria is high in the mountains, winters there are very cold. It was time to reluctantly pack up my few belongings and head back to London... Read more at http://SnapAndScribble.com »

Originally, I was going to do my "normal list" for Aug/Sept and for Oct/Nov and so on and so forth but before I knew it August had come and gone and then came September and it past by too and now it is October so, I am scrapping that idea. As you can probably tell by the title, my new idea is now upcoming movies for the whole Fall/Winter (this entails Aug 08-March 09). Sorry about that.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/repo_the_genetic_opera/

"REPO! is a special treat, a film that should have never been, the bastard child of a studio, something that is so distinct that you can barely begin to compare it to anything else. I GUARANTEE that this will become a cult classic... "

um was geht es:"So what the hell IS REPO!? In the not-so-distant future when an epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet, scientists gear for a massive organ harvest. A biotech giant comes up with easy organ payment plans, but all financed organs are subject to legal default, including repossession at the hands of repo men. Alexa Vega plays Shilo, a 17-year-old girl with a rare blood disease that killed her mother. Her father (Anthony Head) is secretly a repo man who works for Genco and is being blackmailed by it’s owner Rotti Largo (Paul Sorvino). Meanwhile, Rotti is dying and holds the key to many secrets and many lies, all while he's trying to figure out who should take over his thrown. Should it be the insane Luigi (Bill Moseley), the drug-addicted Amber Sweet (Paris Hilton) or the surgery addicted Pavi (Nivek Ogre). All of these twisted tales are wrapped into one giant musical production that is REPO! THE GENTIC OPERA. "http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/review/1544

One day we are enjoying 80 degrees and sunshine, next day its 40 degrees and rainy. I know once this cold snap is over we will back up and actually have fall. But its a shock to go from summer to winter if not in 60 seconds at least over night. I am very glad I got the zucchini out of the vegetable garden on Thursday afternoon. I worked to long on Friday to do it after work and it would have been a miserable job today. I don't think there is any doubt it is going to freeze tonight.

I went to our local Farmers Market today. It really is a farm, up the road about three miles from our house. How cool is that. They told me that tomorrow will be their last day for the season. Just one more sign that summer really is over. My husband thinks we should go back tomorrow. They have lots of nice peppers. If you read my last post then you'll know that my own crop of peppers was almost a complete failure. We're thinking of stocking up on peppers from the farmers market and roasting them to enjoy later this winter.

I showed this video to a few friends and realized a strange aspect of human nature. Why is it that whenever a guy gets whacked in the package, the guys watching cringe in horror while the girls laugh out loud?

Of course, would getting whacked by falling on a stairway handrail make it more hysterical? Check this poor guy:

This next one has happened to me more times than I care to admit:

Did you swear last year that you would get in better shape for this years snowboard season?

If you are like most people, your snowboard season last year preparation probably consisted of a couple of deep knee squats next to the car before you head up the Gondola.

Hopefully you didn't start off your first day anything like these guys:

If you recall, you probably had trouble walking a couple of days after your first few runs.

You might also have found yourself falling too often, gasping for air, apologizing to others and generally not enjoying yourself too much at all.

You might even find yourself injured or somewhat hobbled at some point - in part thanks to your poor preparation.

The first day of snowboarding season doesn't have to be a rite of passage.

There can be many things to hold you back from enjoying your day at the mountain:

Chance of Injury

Fatigue

Lack of endurance needed to get through the day

Inadequate balance to navigate tougher runs

Tired legs

If you find yourself struggling to perform at your best as the day goes on, you may benefit from a conditioning program. However, you should not settle for just any old workout. Here's a few things to consider:

As you swing though a turn, you counter-rotate the upper body with the lower body. This upper body rotation lengthens the same-side gluteus muscle, requiring a level of strength and co-ordination combined with an element of flexibility. If you don't have this movement pattern ready for season, your time on the mountain will be shorter and more exhausting.

The #1 Mistake even the best snowboarders make when training:

If you are not training your hips to rotate as they squat, you are not training your legs to snowboard

Stand with your feet at shoulder width. Bend your knees about 20 degrees. Grab your butt cheeks. Grab a good chunk of muscle of your right and left glute in each hand (try not to do this one in public - the people in the supermarket might wonder what is going on).

Now rotate your body to the left and try to look behind you. If you noticed, your left glute switched on and lengthened a bit more than your right glute. You use each glute differently with each turn, and you use each glute while in rotation. Now ask yourself the following questions:

Have you been training with rotation?

Have you ever done a squat with rotation?

Do you know how to do this exercise safely and effectively?

If the answer is no, you could be missing out on valuable strength, flexibility and power to help you keep those turns crisp and fast.

Abs of steel don't help if that steel doesn't twist

Now think about the action of a turn on your board. Does it involve rotation of your upper and/or lower body? Does your core work consist of any rotational movements, or are they all simple crunches and side bends? Do you know how to safely and effectively train the core to be strong while going through a boarding motion? If you don't, you may be putting your hips, low back and upper back at higher risk of injury.

If you cannot control rotation, you cannot control your board

What does the ACL do? The ACL serves to control rotation of the upper body as it lands and explodes from the ski turn position.

If your hips and core cannot assist in the acceleration and deceleration of your upper body and hips, then your ACL is left to do the majority of the work.

Talk to your local physical therapist and they will happily tell you the number one injury coming off the mountain is a torn ACL. With the right type of training, you can give your body the best chance of preventing an ACL or any other type of snowboard related injury.

Promo Alert: Sick Puppy Snowboard Conditioning Programs are designed to train the body to be strong, powerful and flexible in all the right places at the right times.

The Sick Puppy Conditioning program is the best injury prevention strategy on the market today!

This advanced level of movement science for snowboard conditioning has previously been the domain of elite athletes and international ski coaches. These new training methods now come to you with all of the science, but has been adjusted such that this program is suitable for skiers of any level. Here's why it works so well:

If you train the legs, hips and core to be strong in a 'front to back' sense rather than a 'rotational' sense, you have not only worked out inefficiently, you have done little to nothing to help protect your ACL and low back (the guardian of injury for the 'rotational' movements).

If you are interested in preparing for your season to give yourself the biggest chance of success and the smallest chance of injury, be sure to look for a program that follows certain foundational principles:

Qualified instructor(s)

Trains each individual according to their specific needs

Only trains small groups - no more than 7

Understands the functional aspects and physiological needs of the body as it goes through a snowboard turn

Is able to work with all levels of athlete

The next Sick Puppy Snowboard Conditioning Small Group class will embrace all of the above. After completing one of the specially designed 5 week programs, you will experience the following:

Improved speed and turn control

The endurance to take turns all day and be ready for night skiing

Be able to power through deep powder easily and effortlessly

Greater core strength and upper body control

Better coordination in unfamiliar territory

Less falls

Decreased risk of injury

OK, so maybe my excitement is showing for the Winter Wonderland III, 2009 workshop I will be attending in the Tetons and Yellowstone National park in February! I can't help it, this is mixing Three of my favorite things Photography, Yellowstone National Park, and SNOW/Cold! I am a winter lover!!

I can't wait for the Snow... and the chance to really break in the New Canon EOS 5D Mark II which I plan to have accompany me on this photographic journey. The drive out to and back from Yellowstone should be just as beautiful at that time of the year.

As a matter of fact, the 49er Inn we are staying at during parts of this workshop is right off this Town Square shot show here. Flagg Ranch is en-route to the Yellowstone entrance from the Jackson area.

Oh Yea... I am taking donation for New Snow Tire for the truck this year too!

Last Saturday, my friend Michaelanne and I got to watch the Rocky Mountains hibernate. It was one of the more memorable hikes I've done in recent years, a late-season jaunt across familiar ground in an unfamiliar season. In Colorado, the difference between one weekend and the next is drastic and ultimately humbling. In a week where I watched the economy do more of a tailspin — and also watched more friends lose their jobs — it was deeply refreshing to walk in the woods, hear the most perfect silence, and get my spiritual bearings back. We tend to be small, temporal, self-obsessed, insulated and driven by things that are ultimately not important. Nature is persistent, beautiful, and tends to be more brutal than any stock market. This fact was not lost on me last Saturday — as we entered a clearing on the trail, we could see the Ten Mile Range disappearing in the snow.

That'll make you pay attention, especially when you are wearing shorts like I was.

This hike is top-notch. I've done it four times, and it never ceases to amaze me. Do you want in on the secret? Oh, alright. Seeing that my blog gets about 15 readers a day (and I presume many of you are out of state), I'll divulge. Just don't telegraph it to Colorado.com. You can't trust those tourism promoters!

It's the southern end of the Gore Range Trail. The first segment is fairly popular as it goes to Wheeler Lakes, a pair of alpine ponds in a clearing. But the trail forks to the left, and what's beyond that junction is what interests me. I can't name another trail in Colorado that has such variety: it weaves in and out of the woods, through meadows, past ponds, around marshes, across creeks, along rocky ridges, back into the trees, across scree, beneath a hidden lake, and ultimately, up through the tundra to a low saddle called Uneva Pass, where a window to the north unveils the serrated Gore Range.

Each of the four times I've trekked up this (twice I've reached the pass), something magical happens. The first time was with my best friend Matt after I'd graduated from high school. At the scree field just shy of Lost Lake we saw an ermine dash across the trail and scurry over the rocks. The stench it left behind — they are mustalids like skunks — was short-lived but I'll never forget the lesson: don't f&*# with an ermine.

This go around, Mikey and I had a pretty different wildlife encounter: two couples of blue grouse.

Now, obviously I love birds. Who doesn't? Certainly not these folks. But more often than not, the only birds you see on the trail in Colorado are juncos, jays, nutcrackers and the occasional woodpecker (a western tanager is another story). But grouse is a bit different. In spring these horny little bastards get all gussied up in hilarious breeding plumage and strut like they're on Project Runway. In fall, well, they're more concerned about survival. These fatties were pecking around the forest floor and running around with their tails up. Easy dinner if this were the Oregon Trail.

One couple was just shy of Officer's Gulch. The other couple was hanging out just beyond it. At the crossing of the creek, Mikey and I found ourselves hiking through chest-deep willows the color of rust.

Mikey is running in the Philadelphia Marathon in November, so we kept a pretty quick pace for most of the day (and she somehow ran 18 miles the next day). By 11am we were at Lost Lake (pictured at the top, where she's covering her ears) eating lunch and debating whether we should push for the pass. One stiff wind — which rippled the placid lake and carried the scent of snow — sent us back to the trailhead.

We made great time, ultimately reaching these ponds by 1pm, just as the wind mellowed out. In summer, the ponds are surrounded by marsh marigolds and elephantheads.

But on this day, it was pale grass and brittle stalks baring seeds. You can see what I believe are elephantheads, the dark stems below left of the grass.

One final thing about this trail, why I love it and why I was a bit relieved last weekend as we trekked it. As I've mentioned before — and as any of you living in Colorado know — our northern mountains have been ravaged by the mountain pine beetle, especially Summit County and the Gore Range. In the past few months, I've gotten accustom to the sight of red and dead lodgepole pines in the James Peak Wilderness, Grand Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park and Steamboat Springs.

Last weekend, it dawned on me as we were heading down in a light snow that the forests leading up to Uneva Pass seem unaffected by the beetle. My fingers are crossed on this one, but I wonder if it has to do with how spaced out the trees are. I've always enjoyed how this trail weaves in and out of meadows and takes in views of the Ten Mile Range and the Mount of the Holy Cross. And maybe those meadows are a buffer. Or maybe the beetle just hasn't found them yet. We'll have to see. In the event I go back in the next few summers and find one of my favorite places in Colorado red and dead, I'll just have to remind myself that nature is brutal and there is a certain humility I can gain from that.

We got back to the car at 3pm, stretched our chilled muscles and hopped in the car. It then began to pour an icy rain...nature, at least on this day, was forgiving.

I really, really, really, hate the cold. It makes my joints hurt and generally ruins all my fun. It gives me another thing to worry about. I'm always afraid my wife is going to come across that asshole SUV driver that thinks he's impervious to the snow.

It is snowing a grip right now.

And I get to ride my Stella home.

Yesterday we had our earliest measurable snowfall in history. The chilled atmosphere lightened the rain until it formed floating flake clusters that collected enough to cover the tired October grass. And although it has been melting all morning, still a lace remains in the shadiest spots, and a few sugar lumps dot the tips of the Mugo Pine branches.

And as my husband pointed out, for awhile our weedy yard was equal with all the other yards in the neighborhood, because in the winter they all look the same, mercifully covered in white.
