Fourth of July

We went to Kings Dominion for the Fourth of July, mostly because we wanted our children to have a great time on the rides and also because we wanted to see their fireworks show. I don't have any good photos of the fireworks, but they were absolutely wonderful! We had to stay all day in order to see them. My husband and I didn't ride any of the roller coasters because we couldn't just leave our children to hang out and wait while we stood in line for hours. We were content to see how much fun they could have on the rides designed for their age group.

As a family, we did get to go on the Scooby Doo Haunted Mansion ride together and of course we could all ride the horses on the carousel. I rode the Taxi Jam coaster with my daughter. There was a sign that said, "If you are over 60 inches tall, you must be accompanied by a kid." I don't like the word "kid" for some reason. I try to always say "child" instead. Anyway, it was her first roller coaster ride ever and she was laughing uncontrollably at how fast it took us around the track. My son is still too short to try it (but he was asleep in his papa's arms, so he still doesn't know that his sister did something special without him).

We have a double stroller that we took to Kings Dominion two years ago when our son was only 6 months old, but this time we decided not to take it. Our children were fine walking on their own and since there was a big thunderstorm in the afternoon, the stroller really would have gotten in our way. It would have gotten soaked and then they wouldn't have wanted to sit in it. During the storm we found shelter in the Construction Company playground. There was a net full of plastic balls that entertained them while the rain was pouring down.

We watched the Dora the Explorer show and had fun singing along. Right before the show we took photos with Dora and Diego. Neither of our children cried. They were so brave, especially our son who wanted to spend the entire day blowing kisses to guy in the Scooby costume. They rode in SUVs, race cars, planes, rockets, and swings. Most of the time they were right beside each other, negotiating the big sister-little brother relationship.

The food was terrible, especially our supper. If I didn't have such a stomach of steel, I think I would have vomited. I packed an apple from home, which was the best thing we ate all day! We are going to go to Kings Dominion again because we bought the type of ticket that gets us in twice, so I will pack all of our food and just avoid eating in the nasty restaurants. We will most likely be talked into buying the $4 cotton candy, though.

As we were trying to find things to do at the end of the night, we hung out in the restful Cave Kids building, putting together wooden puzzles and doodling on the chalkboard. Then we took the elevator to the top of the replica of the Eiffel Tower. I was pleased that my daughter recognized it was like the one in Paris because of the Madeline series of books. Once we got up to see the view, there were a lot of insects swarming around the lights and the metal floor was really wet because of the rain. My son saw how far up we were and said, "Ay ay ay." After we had seen the flames shoot out of the Volcano roller coaster several times, we took the elevator back down and walked toward the exit to see the fireworks from the parking lot. They started the fireworks show at 10:00 and we had a clear view from right outside the gate beside the newest roller coaster, the Dominator.

Jeg kom over en video på YouTube i dag. Synes brukeren kommer med mange gode poeng om opphavsrett i brukerstyrte, sosiale medier, som YouTube. Spesielt retter han seg mot konflikten Viacom vs. YouTube.

I videoen ber han Viacom om å ta med PR-avdelingen sin i møte med advokatene, når opphavsrett diskuteres. Feil håndtering av opphavsrettslige krav i brukerstyrte medier, bør føre til boikott og direkte resultater på Viacoms bunnlinje.

youtube, google und die nutzerInnendaten

nach dem haftungsurteil für eltern in bezug auf die aktivitäten ihrer kinder im internet in bayern, folgt nun ein verheerendes urteil aus den usa. die vorgeschobene argumentation der klage von viacom gegen google als besitzer von youtube dreht sich um das urheberrecht. es mutet schon skurril an, wenn die besitzer von mtv, das videos gesampelter musikstücke verbreitet, gegen den datenklau von youtube klagen.

viel schlimmer wiegt aber, dass google jetzt von einem gericht zur herausgabe der nutzerInnendaten gezwungen wird, um überhaupt den eigentlichen prozess durchführen zu können. zum einen zeigt sich dabei wieder, wie viele daten google erhebt, und jeder mit ip-adresse sich bedroht fühlen kann. dazu kommt aber noch, dass sich, wie schon bei staatlichen gesetzesentwürfen, jeder nutzer des internets verdächtigt fühlen kann. angeblich sollen persönliche daten von viacom nicht genutzt werden, es gehe nur darum, google verstösse nachzuweisen.

na, da sind wir aber froh. so wie wir uns darüber freuen, dass google möglichst viele persönliche daten erhebt, so freuen wir uns darüber, dass diese jetzt viacom erhält. noch mehr freuen wir uns darüber, dass beim kampf um den user die konzerne über den verbraucher hinwegschreiten, wie über eine frei verfügbare masse. und die politik schaut tatenlos zu. sie schützt ihre bürger nicht mehr vor konzerninteressen. nach dem motto, selber schuld, wer das internet benutzt. wie dann der staat auf die idee kommen kann, die steuererklärungen nur noch über das netz machen zu lassen, gibt dem ganzen vorgang einen noch schrägeren touch. das soll nicht heißen, dass youtube sich immer korrekt verhält. aber erst überall märkte zu schaffen, die regeln überschreiten, und das betrifft alle größeren anbieter im netz, um dann im konzernclinch den datenschutz zu zermalmen ist schon unverschämt. dass ein richter dem auch noch folgt, stellt die frage, ob die gesetze eigentlich noch den entwicklungen entsprechen.

und es zeigt noch eines ganz deutlich, ländergrenzen haben in diesem zusammenhang kaum eine bedeutung. wichtig ist, wo der server steht. und die meisten stehen in den usa. auch kein neues thema, doch wer die globalisierung herbeiredet, sollte sich auch für einen weltweiten datenschutz einsetzen. das wäre eigentlich eine sinnvolle aufgabe für unseren innenminister :-D

Last night was fun. I didn't make any money, but I had fun. You will hear me say that probably once a week. It basically translates to 'I was too drunk to even try to make money, but I'm convincing myself to not feel guilty because hey - I had fun.'

We went to the bar at 7:30 PM. Vodka Sours are the best. I love the fact that it is still very light out, but we (Carmen, Amor and me) are clearly faded. (By the way, I just discovered this website: Drinks Mixer.)

We got back to work, and Amor recorded me pissing in the garbage can in the upstairs smoking area. She recorded it on her phone, so that explains the poor quality. I apologize, I wish you could behold my drunken essence in it's entirety. This was around 9:00 PM when we still had a full night's work ahead of us. HA. We went back to the bar at 1:00 AM, and who knows what happened after that.

I made some money tonight. I did $280 in dances, paid out $70, tipped out $50 and still managed to leave with $400? I ended up only dancing for females tonight, too. Fucking awesome; easiest $400 I've made in a long time. A couple came in and took me to VIP for ten minutes ($200 for the both of them), but the man wanted me to pay attention only to his girlfriend. Well, a guy wanted a dance from both Nautia and I at the same time, but I paid more attention to her than him, so that doesn't count. Females are definitely way better tippers than men, too.

I did pretty well this past week. I deposit my money into my savings account at the end of every week, and you know it's been a good week when a paper clip no longer stays put, so instead I must use a rubberband. Man, I love that. Yo siempre he creido que lo que nos diferencia de los monos, es que los seres humanos evolucionamos. Esto parece que no se aplica ha Paolo Vasile (consejero delegado de Telecinco) que en una entrevista reciente, nos ha obsequiado con la siguiente perla:

Esto desgraciadamente no es la primera vez que ocurre, y no hace mucho pronunció algo parecido:

"Son igual de piratas; no llegan de Senegal como los del top manta, pero son piratas"

La verdad es que tanta ignorancia da hasta un poco de pena. De todas formas y retomando el tema de la demanda que ha presentado Telecinco contra YouTube hay que decir que Telecinco no es precisamente una santa:

Some stories break and by the time you get around to starting production on the magazine it's old news. A great shame but such is the nature of a monthly publication. Not so with blogs but when you are knee-deep in said process the brain can't tolerate any more than one committment at a time.

So here's my take on the Google/Viacom situation:
The short version is that after a 18 months of wrangling/threats a federal court judge has demanded Google hand over logs of every user, every search, every video watched and how many times users took the time to watch it. Basically the entire history of YouTube is being laid bare and you, a humble user, will have your personal history laid bare for a great big faceless corporate entity to flick through at will.

Actually no that isn't really the case.

Viacom's argument is they want to assess that out of all the content on YouTube how much of it is legally theirs and how much of it is footage of babies, skaters falling on their asses and Ms Carolina fluffing her lines. If Viacom can can prove the extent of Google's liability it can also assess how much of that $1billion they are suing for is likely to come their way. Because Google are like, so not caring about the whole copyright thing.

Also not the case.

youTube has been in trouble over copyright violation almost since day one with the appearance of the Lazy Sunday clip from Saturday Night Live. Deciding that coming up with an amicable solution was better than being sued into oblivion (bear in mind this was a small startup at the time) was to 1) let any material flagged by users as being in violation of copyright can be taken down immediately 2) clips would be limited to only 10 minutes (unless it's original material, in which case you can work away) and 3) if a studio wishes they can run streaming ads across their own material if they wish to post it.

That's as good as it gets. Ask and it will be removed. It's not like YouTube is able to control what's up on the ste, that's the beauty of user generated content.

Viacom's counterpoint is the stuff of hight comedy and I almost like them for displaying a kind of laziness found only in American corporate culture (this is a country where companies try to sue themselves after all).
1) Infringement of copyright harms their ad revenue and future production 2) online video is as valuable as TV broadcast 3) YouTube/Google is liable for everything put up on their site, they should be screening each of the 65.000 vdeos uploaded daily for violations.

Of course Viacom could be doing the last one themselves but apparently that's too hard. So they reject the simple solution to a simple problem and go straight for the cash. They just need to prove they are losing out. Because, like, P2P sharing ofr HD material isn't affecting them at all in comparison to cut up clips of reruns streaming in poor quality.

The part that really makes me chuckle is their attitude to online video as a revenue source. During the writers' strike Viacom said writers were not entitled to video from online sources as it was for promotional purposes only and had NO MONETARY VALUE - even though ads were being streamed across content on network websites.

Viacom, and the federal justice system for that matter, aren't interested in who specific users are, they just want to pin a monetary value on their troubles by matching column A of what they want with column b of what they think they can actually get. Sure they have my username and an IP address but the latter change frequently and does anyone really want to trawl my user history for Cosby Show outtakes? Thought not.

So I'm not terribly worried about Viacom, a US business, having access to my viewing history as an Irish person living far away from their domestic market. Figuring out who I am out of a worldwide audience of millions would just be too damn hard. God bless America.

Es sin duda en momentos en los que más hay que apretarse el cinturón cuando más se agudiza el ingenio y la "picaresca".

Así pues con el cierre masivo de inmobiliarias, las que quieran sobrevivir deben comenzar a utilizar nuevas técnicas de venta, es el llamado "marketing de guerrilla" o "marketing agresivo". Un ejemplo craro se ve ya en las inmobiliarias de Estados Unidos donde nos llevan algo de ventaja en eso de la publicidad.

Dado que casi el 80 por ciento de los compradores de casa empiezan su búsqueda en la Internet, ya comienza a aparecer el efecto "YouTubing" consistente en que las inmobiliarias utilizan vídeos para ayudar a vender sus casas. De manera que a día de hoy ya existen miles de vídeos caseros en YouTube.

Si buscas "casas en venta" en YouTube vas a obtener más de 3.000 anuncios. Es una buena forma de mostrar una casa y con la creciente burbuja inmobiliaria, probablemente, la gente necesita cualquier ventaja que puedan obtener. Algunos vídeos son colocados por propietarios individuales y otros sin embargo por empresas inmobiliarias.

Sin duda es un efecto curioso que poco a poco irá introduciéndose también en España.
